MID COAST TRANSIT PROJECT Not since the Federal Highway Act was signed into law by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, which inaugurated the Interstate-5 corridor that would forever divide East and West San Diego, has the city been shaped by a large scale transportation policy such as the one proposed now for extending the light rail from Old Town to UCSD. On July 2010 the county planning agency, SANDAG, approved a $1.2 billion extension of light rail entitled the “Mid Coast Transit Project, which is expected to be in operation by early 2018. The light rail is expected to take off the road some 10% of the 250,000 vehicles per day that clog I-5. The project will furthermore connect corridor residents with other trolley lines serving the South County. As an extension of the existing Blue Line, it will offer a ride from Downtown to the communities of National City and reach down to the Mexican border. This new service will enhance direct public access to other regional activity centers and improve travel options to employment, education, medical, and retail centers for San Diego residents, commuters, and visitors. This plan to create a light rail linking urban areas and local train lines stretching from the northern reaches of UCSD to the border with Mexico is the direct motivation behind our String Theory vision. The upgrading of mass transit along the I-5 corridor has been prioritized as an important part of the solution to the transportation problems of San Diego. This reflects a reality where urban life today is crisscrossing the region in many patterns. The scope of the project is an example of large scale urban planning based on mass transit, which could inspire other cities in North America to do the same.
