So many gathered, so many helped, so many received. That’s what God did at the Mill through Villa Rica Prays. Thanks to the members and support from the KDC Family, Mayor J. Collins, City Councilman Patrick Henrickson and restaurant owner Fred Mello of Café 4:13. Your support for this God inspired event was phenomenal. Thank you Pastor Bryant of Bethsaida Baptist Church for serving God in Villa Rica for more than 30 years! Thanks Pastor BJ of Joshua House for praying for 10 years that God would unite the community through prayer. Thanks Pastor Stephen of Contemporary Church for your support, as well as from Pastor Porter of New Bethesda Christian Ministries. Pastor Tony of LifeGate Church, you are a trailblazer. What powerful men you all are. Your teams and church members were awesome. A special thanks goes to Carrollton Pastor, Keith Jiles of Word of Faith. Your friendship is much appreciated, and your effectiveness as the Chaplain of the Police and Fire Departments is priceless. With all of this spiritual power, success for this prayer event was inevitable. For three (3) hours Villa Rica became a garden where seeds were planted. The result will be a harvest of souls, business expansion and community unity. The pioneers who preceded us left a set of spiritual orders outlining the work God wants finished. Per the records at the Pine Mountain Gold Museum the City of Atlanta’s first bank and City Council were established by Villa Rica residents. And what about the Father of Gospel music, Thomas Dorsey and the worldwide trademark Coca Cola, founder Asa Candler? Both resided in the City of Gold. This storied past is still speaking to us today and awaiting the appropriate response from us. Our residents should now step into the shoes of those vacated by these giants; prayer is the first step in that journey. On this second Saturday in September, many barriers were leveled by the pounding power of prayer, and now the righteous have the upper hand. Hunger, racial division, religious feuding and sickness must now bow to health, unity, respect and abundance. As we become what we desire inside first, the things we seek in prayer will become fully manifested. May the best of the Lord be yours as we transition into this new season. We speak blessings on every business, church and family. As you are reading this, we believe that you will benefit from the collective efforts of many praying citizens. Our expectation is that your expectations will be achieved as you accept that God’s love has already provided every

good thing. Your role is simply to believe and receive. Blessings and congratulations be upon you for helping fulfill one of the many agenda items God expects us to complete. Until the next time, bless everyone you meet with a compliment; do it in the first 30 seconds of the conversation. This will extend the grace of God’s favor upon them, and upon you. Keep praying! Victory in the Spirit is at hand!

dining Winners of the 17th Annual Chili Cook Off The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is pleased to announce the winners of the 17th Annual Chili Cook Off on O’Neal Plaza in historic Downtown Douglasville, on Saturday, October 19th.

Coordinated by former CAC Board President Allen Culpepper with assistance from CAC staffers Cristhtian Perez Molina and Whitney House, our panel of celebrity judges – Jerry Frost, Marge Frost, Josh Gibson, John Sell and Mike Tuttle – deliberated with great care while judging which of the 25 chili cookers would be awarded the coveted “Best Tasting” prize. This year’s award was presented to first-timer Carole Parks Catering for their delectable barbecue chili served with macaroni and cheese; City Council candidate Mike Miller placed second with a delicious hearty chili; and another popular first-timer West Georgia Technical College’s Culinary Arts Institute team led by chef Stephanie Pavich Adams took third place for its excellent bourbon cocoa flavored chili. CAC Board members Jerry Leath, Linda Britt and Marcita Scharnhorst were assisted by The Patch’s John Barker in judging the “Best Decorated Booth” competition with top honors also going to Carole Parks Catering for their beautiful candle-lit and spider web draped haunted house booth; second place was awarded to the elegant black and silver booth, shared by Mayor Harvey Persons and his wife Sherrie with County Chairman Tom Worthan and his wife Linda; and third to City Councilman Dennis McClain’s Halloween classic booth. A frequent prize-winner Douglas County Coroner Randy Daniel won the highly competitive award of “Most Sold” again this year with Carole Parks Catering in second place and first-time competitor West Georgia Technical College’s Culinary Arts Institute taking third. The Children’s Halloween Costume Contest, coordinated by CAC office manager Chris O’Shaunnessy, proved more popular than ever, and our panel of judges faced tough decisions in awarding prizes for most creative costuming, but every child was a winner.

Senior Living Doing the Most Good By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, Carrollton, 770.832.8243, mmurphy@cypresshealthgroup.com When I first started writing this article, the intent was to help the general public understand how nursing homes work, why they exist and what they do. I’d like to encourage readers to email or call me with questions or suggestions for topics so that I will have some idea of where to go next. This month I am going to go back to the basics and write about the differences between different types of care available to seniors. A nursing home is most often the same thing as a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), which may also be referred to as a rehab facility. This means that the facility provides skilled services on a daily basis - either nursing skilled services or other skilled services, such as rehabilitation. SNFs are funded by Medicare and Medicaid, which means that they are heavily regulated by both the Federal and State government. Medicare pays for nursing home services only after a three-day admission to the hospital, and even then only for as long as skilled services on a daily basis are required, for a maximum of 100 days. Starting on day 21 there is a co-payment of $142.00 per day. Most SNFs also offer long term care, which is where the “nursing home comes in. The most common payment source for long-term care is Medicaid. Medicaid is a state program that pays for long term care if your assets and income meet certain criteria. Medicaid requires a monthly co-payment that is usually the amount of total income minus $50 for personal needs. If you are not eligible for Medicaid and you need long-term care in a nursing

home, the cost is around $5,000 to $6,000 per month. Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs, sometimes referred to as Senior Living or Retirement Living) are exactly what their name implies. ALFs offer a place for people to live in an apartment like setting, either independently or if needed, with services available to assist them with activities of daily life. For the monthly fee you get housekeeping and laundry services, utilities, activities and certain transportation services. ALFs are typically a private pay proposition with different levels of care provided for different levels of fees. Medicare does not pay for an ALF, nor does Medicaid except on an extremely limited basis. ALFs typically cost somewhat less than a nursing home - anywhere from $2,900 to $4,500 depending on services. So, what are some other options for seniors who need help? There are home health agencies that provide nursing services and rehabilitation services in the home. Typically these services are paid for by Medicare and/ or insurance, but are only covered for a certain amount of time. In order for Medicare to pay for home health services, a doctor must say that your condition requires that you be homebound and need intermittent skilled nursing care or skilled rehabilitation services. Medicare does not pay for 24-hour a day care at home or for meals delivered at home. Medicare also does not pay for personal care or homemaker services if that is the only care you need. Medicaid also pays for short term home health services upon the order of a doctor if you meet income and asset criteria. For more information on Medicare, please visit www.Medicare.gov. For information on Medicaid, please visit www.dch.georgia.gov/medicaid.

Christmas Tips By Debra Y. Milton, Four Paws Pet-Sitting, 678.838.7297 Don’t leave out presents that have food items in them. Holiday plants that are poisonous to your pets include the berries of mistletoe, holly, hibiscus, Christmas rose and poin-

settia. For a list of poisonous plants contact the Animal Poison Control Center at www.aspca.org. For emergencies, call the ASPCA at 888.426.4435. And remember, holiday dangers to your pet exist all around a live Christmas tree. Pine tree water can be poisonous to pets so use an enclosed tree stand. Secure your tree to the wall to avoid injuries caused by a tree toppling over on your pet.

Annual Hungry Bowl™ Pet Food Drive As part of an international effort by Pet Sitters International (PSI), the Hungry Bowl™ Pet Food Drive serves to collect pet food for local rescue groups and shelters. The local Drive is again being sponsored by Four Paws Pet-Sitting Service. Rescue groups and shelters across the country are in dire need. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations: • Douglas County Courthouse (Info Desk), 8700 Hospital Drive; • Sweetwater Creek Animal Hospital, 2785 Lee Road, Suite B-10; • Janice Thompson State Farm Insurance, 2090 Fairburn Road; • Westside Animal Emergency Clinic, 875 Thornton Road; • Douglasville Wellness & Chiropractic, 3677 Highway 5 For more information, contact Debra Y. real estate Villa Rica Tour of Homes Holiday Season - A Great Time to Sell By Donna Agan-Williams, Keller Williams Realty Cityside, 770.856.1549 During the holiday season is a great time to sell your home. Below are the top ten reasons why you should list your home for sale now: 10. Benefits in the spring buying season. By selling now, you may have an opportunity to be a non-contingent buyer during the spring, when many more houses are on the market for less money (supply and demand). This allows you to sell high and buy low. 9. Open time to show your home. Even though your house will be on the market, you still have the option to restrict showings to the six or seven days around the holidays. 8. Capture the transfer market. January is traditionally the month for employees to begin new jobs. Since transferees cannot wait until the spring to buy, you need to be on the market during the holidays to capture that market. 7. Tax reasons. Some people must buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. 6. Buyers have more time. Buyers have more time to look for a home during the holidays than they do during the working week. 5. Buyers are emotional. Buyers are more emotional during the holidays, so they are more likely to pay your price. 4. Holiday decorations. Houses simply show better when decorated for the holidays. 3. Supply and demand. Since the supply of houses listed will dramatically increase in January, there will be less demand for your particular home. Less demand means less money for you. 2. Less competition. Serious buyers have fewer houses to choose from during the holidays and less competition means more money for you. And the number one reason you should list during the holidays…

Have you ever wanted to see inside some of Villa Rica’s historic structures and private homes? Well, now’s your chance! Mark your calendars for Villa Rica’s first annual “Tour of Homes” scheduled for December 7, from 4pm to 8pm. Tickets are $15 to tour all four locations. You may purchase tickets at www.villarica-mainstreet.com and at the Main Street office at 106 Temple Street (beside the amphitheater stage). Home include: The Powell House - This home is not the oldest structure in Villa Rica, but it is one of the most recognizable homes in the city; The C.M. Griffin House - This home burned in 1902 and was rebuilt in 1904; The McLeod Home Place - Dr. Hart built this home in 1824; First Presbyterian Church - Began in local homes in 1855 with 14 members.

1. Serious buyers. People who look for homes during the Holidays are more serious buyers!

Annual Holiday Card Design Competition at the Cultural Arts Center The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County presents more than 129 holiday card designs created by elementary, middle and high school students from 20 Douglas County Schools in its annual competition. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, December 5th, from 5 until 6:30pm for participating students, teachers and their families. Former Douglas County Schools music specialist, and music teacher at the Cultural Arts Center, Nancy Whittenburger will play Christmas carols and seasonal music on the piano during the festivities. This event is free and open to the general public. The Annual Holiday Card Design Competition and the Festival of Trees is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Douglas County. The designs of students from New Manchester Elementary and Winston Elementary Schools, Turner Middle School and New Manchester High School were selected to be reproduced as holiday cards in full color for the first time this year. The winners of the annual holiday card competition are: Annie Barker (2nd grade, Winston Elementary; Ms. Antonovich, art teacher); Tatiana Serrano (4th grade, New Manchester Elementary; Ms. Ernst, art teacher); Itzel Varga (8th grade, Turner Middle School; Mr. Jordan, art teacher); and Laetitia Auguste (11th grade, New Manchester High School; Ms. Houlihan). Their prize-winning printed cards will be available for sale at the Cultural Arts Center. “We are delighted with the quality of the designs entered this year, and it was very hard to pick only four artworks to be printed as our winners,” commented Allen Culpepper, CAC Gallery Committee Chair. “In fact, we want everyone to know that every student in this show is a winner – they were selected to represent their schools, and they should be very proud of themselves. We sure are proud of them!” CAC Board member and the Douglas County Extension Office’s 4-H coordinator Jeremy Cheney helped to organize the annual Festival of Trees this year. Douglas County Schools fine arts teachers decided that the 2013 theme would be “Famous Artists and Art Movements from History;” and trees decorated by 15 schools and youth groups will be on

Crying at Walmart He wasn’t suppose to leave until early December. But things changed and the call came letting us know we had three days to spend with our oldest son before he shipped out for basic training. We quickly planned a party to send him off right. As my husband and I stood at the Walmart bakery counter deciding what to have written on his cake, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the reality that was before us. Our son was officially leaving the nest. The tears started flowing. I have to say the lady behind the counter was so sweet about my unexpected emotional outburst. As we face this major life change I am so thankful I can cover my son in prayer and know we have given him a strong spiritual foundation. The time for childhood family memories and traditions is complete. The time for childhood teaching and disciplining is done. It is now time for him to decide the man he will be and the path he will follow. It is bittersweet. On the one hand we are so proud of the man he is becoming, yet on the other hand I see him as a three year old in my mind. Year by year, month by month, day by day and hour by hour seeds have been planted. It is now time for our son to put his roots down and bloom. Thankfully I can say, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 ~Missy Article sponsored by Discovery Church, an Acts 29 church plant next to Walmart & QuikTrip in Villa Rica. www.thediscoverychurch.org

Decorating Tips

Area Rugs Make a Difference By

Karen

Hartley,

Karen

Hartley

Interiors,

770.459.9096, www.karenhartleyinteriors.com

Today many of our homes have hardwood or other hard surface floors in main rooms. Hard surface floors are easy to care for and add value to your home. However, in many cases, the addition of an area rug adds connectivity to the large space by defining space and unifying the furnishings. Even homes with wall to wall carpet can use area rugs for the same purpose. Area Rugs are important to the overall appearance of a room and bring color and style to your home design so long as you keep a few tips in mind. Common rug sizes are referred to as 5’x7’, 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’ and 12’x15’. However, the actual size of the rug may vary. Design constraints may not always allow for the rug size to be exactly a 8 x 10 because the pattern may not quite fit. In that case the area rug may end up being 8’4 x 10’2. Most of these rugs are made overseas in countries using metric measurements and so the conversion may not be exact. Know the exact size so that you do not end up with an area rug too large for the space. Even a few inches can make a difference! Whatever the actual size is, when it comes to placing the rug, be sure that any furniture sits on the rug completely. You don’t want it partly off the area rug because this makes the furniture unbalanced and is uncomfortable to sit on. This is especially critical in the dining room; remember to pull the chair out as if you were seated in it. If the chair sits half on/half off the rug, the size is too small. Color will be a key in selecting the correct rug for a space. Sometimes, the rug can be selected first and become the “roadmap” for selecting the furnishings and accessories for the room. The colors don’t have to be a perfect match but should be in the same family of colors. If you are working with existing furniture patterns, then the rug should include the colors in those patterns. A rug can be only tones of one color or can include all the colors in the patterns on the furniture. Consider how much of the rug will be visible and not under the furniture when selecting the actual pattern. If much of the rug is tucked under pieces, then a simple pattern will be best. Large patterns and detailed patterns are best for open spaces. For example, if your room has the usual sofa and two chairs with a large cocktail ottoman and they “fill” the space, then a simple pattern will be best. Without the cocktail, or with a glass cocktail, then a more detailed pattern will look interesting. Selecting an area rug for any room in your home should be a balance of style, and functionality. They can truly make or break a room! The actual fiber content will dictate the ease of use for that rug. For example, wool will last forever, almost, but soils easier than nylon. Some fibers feel better to touch for those who spend time sitting on the floor.

Winterizing Your Landscaping By Kate Wright, who owns Bloom’n Gardens Landscape. She is a degreed Botanist, Certified Arborist, and Certified Pesticide Applicator, & Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, www.bloomngardens.com • 404.314.1474

With all the hustle and bustle that fills our days from Thanksgiving until the New Year, take a moment to evaluate your landscape to see if you have properly put it to bed for the winter. I know with all the leaves quickly falling out of the trees it may seem like a bit of a chore, but putting in the hard work now can ensure a vigorous, healthy landscape come spring. To make things a bit easier, why not enlist the entire family; some of my best memories were built around a pile of leaves. Yet another daunting part of leaf removal is what to do with all the debris. Here you have some choice into just how much or how few leaves you remove. The leaves that you remove from your lawn can be moved to a compost pile that will serve you well during the spring planting season, they can be used in your bed areas to cover bare soil or depending on your municipalities’ ordinances, bagged and left on the curb. Burning of leaf litter can be a dangerous activity and should only be done during authorized times of the year and under extremely safe circumstances, make sure you check with your local fire department to find out the proper regulations and procedures to follow*. If you are really ambitious and like the look of clean neat shrub borders, remove all the leaves from this area as well, and replace it with a thick layer of mulch or pine straw to insulate the root systems of trees, shrubs and hardy perennials. While you are working in your shrub borders, go ahead and cut back all of those spent perennials and remove your summer annual color. Recharging flower beds with pansies and ornamental kale can really brighten an otherwise bland landscape. Why not go the extra step and nestle in a few tulip bulbs that will lay in rest until they are ready to pop out with a colorful display early next year. A little tip that many homeowners are unaware of is that evergreen plants lose some of their leaves in the fall in much the same fashion as their deciduous counterparts. The only difference is that they will lose only some of their leaves and not all. So if you notice your arborvitae turning brown try not to panic. If the leaf loss is primarily in the interior of the plant, chances are all is good. Simply mulch the tree/shrub to protect it from the winter cold. Properly winterizing your landscape in the fall is the best protection to ensure a healthy landscape in spring.

*Douglas County Burning Permits Residents wishing to burn vegetative debris may obtain a free burn permit from their local fire station. Burn permits will only be issued the day burning is to begin, and if the winds are under 10 miles per hour. Residents can dial 770.949.1212 after 8am to determine if burning permits are being given each day. In addition to obtaining a burning permit, residents must follow all burning guidelines. Guidelines can be found by visiting the ‘Burning Permits and Reports’ section of www. CelebrateDouglasCounty.com.

And, since you know you will be adding more “stuff” in the form of gifts (multiplied by however many people live in your home) why not take the time to sort out some of the things your children have outgrown or no longer play with and donate them to a worthy charity? The same goes for adults! Remember, just as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away….a little pickup each day keeps clutter at bay!” The year is coming to a close, so I just wanted to take a minute and tell you how much I appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule every

Septic Tank Care

Taking Care of Your Septic Tank By Lynn McMichael, Septic Solutions, 770.489.2095 or 770.942.PUMP, septictankfixer.com

As 2013 comes to an end and you begin to plan for 2014, don’t forget to add taking care of your septic system to your New Year’s resolutions. Taking care of your system, like taking care of your body, has many benefits in the long run. Many people ignore their septic tank because they’ve never had a problem or they don’t know it’s there. They also believe many of these common myths. These myths include: You don’t have to pump a septic tank until you have a problem. TRUTH: You should pump it every two to five years to remove any solids that have not decomposed. These solids can go out into the field lines and clog them. My tank was pumped two years ago. It shouldn’t be full now. TRUTH: It will be full. The average family uses about 200 gallons of

water a day. If you have a 1000 gallon tank, it will be full in five days. As you add waste, the waste that is already in the tank is pushed out into the field lines and absorbed by the soil. It’s okay to flush baby wipes and feminine products down the toilet. TRUTH: NEVER flush anything other than waste and toilet paper. Some wipes say they are suitable for septic tanks, but they could cause a clog or stoppage in the line to the tank or clog the filter going out of the tank. Don’t flush cigarette butts, hypodermic needles or condoms. We have a three bedroom home, but we have beds for twelve people so everything should be fine. TRUTH: If a home was buit with three bedrooms, the septic system was designed for three bedrooms. This will probably support four to five people. The septic system will not be large enough to handle the amount of waste and water being used by this many people. We’re going to build an addition over our septic tank, but we don’t have septic problems so it will be fine. TRUTH: NEVER build anything over your septic tank or field lines. If the septic tank needs to be accessed, whatever is over it will have to be moved.

marriage & family The Family Connection Advent Calendars By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries.kerrydrive5@yahoo.com

Advent calendars are an important tradition in some families and for others it’s something that’s never really been tried. Growing up, my family didn’t really use one. My son has enjoyed a Lego Advent Calendar the last few years. It counts down the days to Christmas, but of course, it has no other spiritual element. My sister has four children, so the Lego Advent Calendar I bought for them to share last year was more a source of sibling squabbling, then a reminder of the impending birth of our Savior. Last week, I started thinking about what I could do to make them an advent calendar this year. I started searching the internet and found some great ideas. Pinterest has tons of great ideas to get your creative juices flowing on how to make a beautiful advent calendar. From simple to elaborate, there’s probably an idea that will work for just about everyone. It can even be as simple as small paper bags, numbered with a marker and sealed with a Christmas sticker. These are ones you can create and re-use year after year. Numbered little boxes, muslin bags or fabric wall hangings with pockets can be re-filled with different treats each year or you can create a set of 25 items that are re-used each year, depending on the tradition you want to create. I decided that each day should include a scripture verse. I started searching for a collection of verses and found several websites with lists. Daily scriptures for Advent can be found at www.focusonthefamily.com. If you

40 |

VILLA RICA NEWS & VIEWS

Marriage & Family

would like a set of pre-designed scripture cards you can print, check out www.1dogwoof.com and search for “Scripture Advent Calendar”. At www. sweeteritis.blogspot.com, there is a great tutorial on creating an “Advent Calendar to Teach the True Meaning of Christmas”. It includes a scripture for each day, as well as an item that reinforces the verse and theme of the day. As I pondered what treats I could put into each day, I thought about including a few challenges too. I’m thinking a challenge a week would work, so I’m going to include: make a Christmas ornament to give to someone you appreciate; write a thank you note and mail it to someone who has made an impact on your life; make some Christmas cookies (or other edible treat) and deliver them to someone who might be lonely this year; and take time this week to tell each person in your family why he or she is special to you. At www.espressoandcream.com, there is a list of “25 Christmas Challenges”. There are ideas on that list that you could challenge yourself with or you could adapt as challenges for your children or your whole family. The kids I’ll be making these calendars for range from four to 14 yearsold, so I’ll be adapting these ideas to fit their ages. If a daily calendar seems like too big of a project or if your December is already flying by, try having a Scripture reading, treat or challenge once a week. You could celebrate the “12 Days of Christmas” and start out your Advent remembrance on the 14th instead. Be creative and flexible…try just the five days leading up to Christmas or ponder on these things the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Whatever works for your family is fine because you can count on the fact that any time spent reflecting on the birth of our Savior is time that is well spent.

You Can Help! West Georgia Elves

Jimmy, Trina and Erin White, life-long residents of Douglas County, have formed the West Georgia Elves, a 501(c)3, non-profit corporation. The purpose of the corporation is to assist families of children with serious illnesses. The White’s stated that while Christmas gifts are their focus now, the financial burden on these families is great all year and they hope to be able to provide such assistance throughout the year. A website has been established (www.WestGaElves.org) so that individuals and businesses can “elf” a child for Christmas or make a monetary donation. When someone “elfs” a child, they are agreeing to be responsible for this child’s entire Christmas. Once gifts have been purchased, they can be delivered to the celebration party on December 7th, or dropped off during business hours between now and December 6th at Stewart Parkway Medical. Information from the CDC shows that the medical costs for a child with cerebral palsy and intellectual disability can be up to 26 times greater than that of a healthy child. Children with serious illnesses and their families face hardship every day and the West Georgia Elves want to help ease their financial burden this Christmas. To learn more about the West Georgia Elves, get directions on how to “elf” a child, or directions on how to make a donation, please visit the website listed above or call 678.905.7045. 100% of donations goes directly to a family in need and is tax deductible.

Kid’s Christmas Special The Kiwanis Club of Douglas County will be sponsoring the 16th annual “Kid’s Christmas Special”. This Christmas holiday project enables local needy children the opportunity to go on a “shopping spree”, accompanied by an officer from the Douglasville Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Fire Department or a local community leader. On December 19, each child will be afforded $100 to spend at the Wal-Mart off of Highway 5 in Douglasville. A Douglasville police officer, sheriff’s deputy, fire fighter, first responder or local community leader and Kiwanis volunteers will use guidance provided by the child’s family in helping the child select his/her presents. The cost for a sponsorship is only $100 per child. Anyone interested in sponsoring a child should mail your contribution to the Kiwanis Club of Douglas County Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 69, Douglasville, GA 30133 or contact Jim Wilson at 404.376.0287. The Kiwanis Club of Douglas County is a 501(c) 3 and totally tax deductible. One-hundred percent (100%) of every contribution is used for this project.

DIRECTORY & GUIDE Go Ahead, Take a Shot By Dr. Ather, family medicine physician with Villa Rica Family Medicine. www.VillaRicaFamilyMedicine. org, 770.456.3790 Have you had a flu shot this year? Do you also need a pneumonia shot? “Flu and pneumonia are respiratory illnesses that should not be taken lightly,” said Urooj Ather, MD, a family medicine physician with Villa Rica Family Medicine, part of Tanner Medical Group. “Many people don’t realize that pneumonia and the flu combined are the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S.” Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs—either one or both—caused by an infection. The inflammation makes it difficult for oxygen to reach your blood. Pneumonia can be a serious, potentially fatal condition, particularly in the very young and in older adults. According to Dr. Ather, older adults are at greater risk than younger adults for contracting pneumococcal pneumonia, the most common bacterial form of the disease. Taking steps to prevent pneumonia, recognizing the symp-

toms and getting early treatment are vital to maintaining good health. Dr. Ather recommends the pneumococcal vaccine for people at high risk for serious problems if they get pneumonia, and for everyone age 65 or older without serious problems. High-risk adults include those with chronic conditions like asthma, alcoholism, COPD and diabetes—all of which affect the immune system; residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities; and people who smoke cigarettes. Influenza—or the flu—is a highly contagious respiratory infection cause by a virus. Although the flu is usually mild in children and younger adults, it can cause life-threatening viral pneumonia in older adults. Influenza epidemics in the past have killed millions of people worldwide. “Anyone age six months or older should receive an annual seasonal flu vaccine,” said Dr. Ather. “Influenza viruses are constantly changing, so it’s important to get a new flu shot each year. It’s best to get a flu shot in the fall, when the vaccine becomes available in your community.” If you think that you have pneumonia or the flu - even if you have been vaccinated - see your family physician as soon as possible to determine if you need treatment with antibiotics or antiviral drugs.

medical directory & guide GERD: A Burning Issue By Dr. Gill, a board-eligible gastroenterologist and liver disease specialist with Gastroenterology Associates, part of Tanner Medical Group. 770.456.3786, www.GastroenterologyAssoc.org We all face heartburn from time to time. Usually, the burning can be relieved by dropping a few antacids and swearing off Thai food (for a while, at least). For others, however, it’s more than just an occasional annoyance. These people have a common digestive problem that called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. With GERD, the contents of the stomach flow back up into the esophagus. Many things can cause GERD, such as: digestive muscles that don’t work properly; obesity; pregnancy; lifestyle factors. Although GERD is rarely life-threatening, it can lead to bleeding or ulcers

in the esophagus. Plus, it may increase a person’s risk for a type of cancer of the esophagus. Do you have GERD? Heartburn and acid regurgitation are the classic signs of GERD. Other signs may include: cough; hoarseness; chest pai; nausea; trouble swallowing. If you have these symptoms, there are some things you can do to bring yourself some relief. Some of the lifestyle choices that you can make to help ease the discomfort of GERD include: not smoking; limiting alcohol; staying away from foods that have caffeine, as well as onions, tomatoes, peppermint, spearmint, chocolate, citrus fruits, or foods with a lot of spices or fat; losing weight (if overweight); raising the head of the bed by six inches; not lying down within three hours after eating; not wearing tight-fitting clothes; not eating large meals. If you have any of the symptoms listed above, talk to your doctor. He or she can recommend testing and other treatments, including medications that can help reduce the amount of acid in your stomach.

Can Cinnamon Control Diabetes? By Dr. Wizner, a board-certified family medicine physician with Tanner Primary Care of West Paulding. www. PrimaryCareWestPaulding.org, 770.456.3866 A stick of cinnamon can sweeten coffee or give whole wheat toast an extra kick. But some believe this favorite spice might actually have a positive impact on managing diabetes. There are many types of cinnamon. What we buy in the U.S. is usually Cassia cinnamon, also called Chinese cinnamon. It’s the bark and flowers of the plant that are used for medicine. But whether or not this spice can help control diabetes is a matter of debate. Studies have yielded conflicting results. Some showed a benefit, others did not. Because of these differences, in 2008, researchers set out to integrate the data. They looked at randomized, controlled studies—the gold standard for clinical trials—that compared cinnamon with a placebo in people with diabetes. Five studies met their criteria, with 282 people using Cassia cinnamon, although with different amounts used in each study. Individually, some studies showed that cinnamon lowered fasting blood sugar levels. But when data from all five trials were combined, cinnamon had no effect on blood sugar. In addition, the ancient spice did not improve A1C (which measures average blood sugar for the past two to three months), cholesterol or triglyceride levels. However, a similar analysis performed in 2011 with data from several newer studies showed that cinnamon did lower fasting blood sugar levels. In fact, blood sugar declined to the same extent as with some diabetes medicines. Until a long-term clinical study with many patients shows cinnamon helps control diabetes, you should continue to use medicine, a healthy diet and exercise to control your blood sugar levels. And remember, however you choose to use cinnamon, ground cinnamon and cinnamon sugar are not the same thing. If you want to give cinnamon a try, talk with your doctor first. While some studies have shown it lowers blood sugar, you need to be careful when using it with diabetes medicine. Lowering your blood sugar too much can be risky. It also may be toxic to the liver in large amounts or when used with medicines that potentially harm the liver.
