So it’s March! Nearly 90 days into the new year! How did you do in the first 3 months? We challenged our congregation to get themselves together in the 1st quarter so that they could live in the benefits for the rest of the year. In case you missed it, consider evaluating where your life is on 3 levels. Level 1 - Where are you spiritually? Rate yourself as it relates to the following: 1. Spiritual Growth 2. Spiritually Stagnant 3. Spiritually Stuck Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 is Great: 1 is Struggling. If you’re between 8 to 10, help someone. If not, get around people who are doing well in these areas. It is important to be HONEST with yourself about where you are as there is no progress without honesty. Regardless of your current score ask God to help you to get better. This will mean changing your thoughts, your circle, and even your routines. I think you’re up for the challenge! Let’s get to work. Level 2 - Where are you financially? 1. Saving regularly 2. Tithing at your church 3. Got plenty to share with others Using the same scale as outlined above, be honest and rate yourself. Many of God’s people are in D.E.B.T. That is, Doing Everything But Tithing. God’s covenant promise to Abram, before his name was changed, directly impacts your pocketbook. In Genesis 11, Abram was in a family that made idols for a living. In Genesis 12, Abram left his past behind. In Genesis 13:2, Abram was rich. All of this was before the law. It’s strange how people question giving as a means of covenant,

but have no problem giving to bill collectors and entertainment. If you are a Believer of the Lord Jesus, get out of D.E.B.T. The evidence of God’s faithfulness is compelling. Level 3 - How healthy are your relationships? Basic to all of life is this simple question, “Who do you listen to?” If you listen to bitter people for advice about forgiveness, don’t expect to hear from God. If you ask a “Player” (womanizer) about how to treat your wife, you may end up in divorce court. Whomever you listen to, will determine where your life is going. The circle that influences you is determining your future. As you rate yourself, again be honest. The point of this is very simple. Time is running out. Spring will give way to summer; summer will introduce fall and before long we will be Christmas shopping all over again. Between now and then Jesus is still wanting more access to the life He made for us. So on a scale of 1 to 10, How Did You Do thus far? And if you don’t like the current results, take a step in a new direction. You can do it!

children & education Winston Christian Academy to Bring New Preschool Teaching Method to Georgia Winston Christian Academy in Winston is about to become the first preschool in Georgia to bring the Fusion Early Learning teaching methods and curriculum to the Peach State. When Angie Smith opened Winston Christian Academy in 2003 she also began an ongoing pursuit to find the best approach to early education. Ten years later, still not satisfied with what was available to her, Angie’s path crossed with Meghan Hamilton, author and founder of Fusion Early Learning.

Fusion Early Learning is inspired by educational neuroscience, designed to bridge the disconnect between early education and the K-12 school system by combining the popular philosophies of the Montessori and Waldorf early education programs to create a cohesive curriculum that balances a creative, teacher-directed approach to classroom education with self-guided, age-appropriate learning activities centered around play. In 2006, the first Fusion Preschool opened in California. The Fusion approach was designed to overcome major challenges within the early learning industry and excite young students, exposing them to subject matter not typically taught during the preschool years. To provide some back-story on the challenges in more traditional environments, today’s state mandated Common Core Curriculum has left education experts and parents at odds. New government standards instruct teachers what to teach, how to teach, and monitor them to ensure they don’t deter from a particular script. This leaves little room for teachers to express personal style and creativity. Some argue that the Common Core Curriculum desensitizes children, and does very little to stimulate imagination, curiosity, and creativity. Some parents report a sharp decline in the academic work of their children following “core” implementation. The challenges of traditional education led Angie to research new frameworks for early education which led her to the unique and successful methods of Fusion Early Learning. Meghan Hamilton, owner and Founder of Fusion Early Learning (who also developed the Fusion Early Learning curriculum) shares her excitement regarding this newest expansion of the program. “We are ecstatic to bring the Fusion Early Learning approach to Georgia. Through a brief phone call it became quite clear that Angie shared the same vision for early education and would be the perfect fit for our methods and curriculum. She is dedicated and passionate about providing the very best preschool education in West Georgia and we have no doubt that she will succeed!” The learning environment at Fusion Early Learning Preschools is divided into three classrooms, each focused on specific subjects such as Early Literacy, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and the Arts, to provide the most comprehensive learning experience possible for young students. Hamilton continues, “Fusion graduates are equipped with the social, developmental and academic skills needed to have a successful primary school experience. They leave our program with fire in their eyes, ready for the educational adventure ahead of them. We hope that families in West Georgia will take advantage of this incredible opportunity the Winston Academy has placed before them and give their children the preschool experience they long for and deserve.” “Over the next few months look for some exciting new additions to our program” explains Angie. “In addition to our new curriculum we are adding Discovery Camp this summer, bringing new technology into our classrooms and remodeling our website.” Those interested in learning more about Fusion Early Learning or Winston Christian Academy may do so on the School’s website, www.winstonchristianacademy.com or in person at 7425 Highway 78, Winston, GA 30187 or by phone at 770.949.7462.

setting up payment reminders or having payments automatically deducted by a certain date using your online banking.

3. Focus on paying off credit cards first vs. other debt. Whittling down revolving debt, such as credit cards, will do a lot more for your score than erasing installment loans, such as personal loans or auto loans. Paying off a $250,000 mortgage when your score is already high will boost it by only five or 10 points, says Clarke. But paying off a few thousand dollars on credit cards can add 100 points. 4. Stay under the magic 50%. Clarke says, “The second biggest factor of your credit score is how much you owe — it’s 30% of your score! Credit card issuers report the amount you owe on your cards each month to the credit bureaus. That’s why I always recommend to my members that their balance never get above 50% of their credit limit, for example $2,500 on a $5,000 limit. And if it does go above try to pay it down as quickly as possible, especially if you plan on applying for another loan in the near future.” 5. Have a favorite credit card. Having multiple credit cards with balances can actually hurt your credit score, so limit the bulk of your spending to one card, says Clarke. She recommends selecting the card that has the lowest rate and making the majority of purchases on that card, and only making small charges to your other cards. “Whatever you do, don’t get discouraged,” Clarke says. “Building or rebuilding good credit can take a little time, but the rewards are worth it!”

Four Good Reasons to Direct Deposit Your Refund Courtesy of T. Dennis Connally Consultant, P.C., Certified Public Accountant, 8483 Campbellton Street, 770.920.2890, tdconnally.com

Would you choose direct deposit this year if you knew it’s the most popular way to get a federal tax refund? What if you learned it’s safe and easy, and combined with e-file, the fastest way to get a tax refund? The fact is almost 84 million taxpayers chose direct deposit in 2013. Still not sure it’s for you? Here are four good reasons to choose direct deposit: 1. Convenience. With direct deposit, your refund goes directly into your bank account. There’s no need to make a trip to the bank to deposit a check. 2. Security. Since your refund goes directly into your account, there’s no risk of your refund check being stolen or lost in the mail. 3. Ease. Choosing direct deposit is easy. When you do your taxes, just follow the instructions in the tax software or with your tax forms. Be sure to enter the correct bank account and routing number. 4. Options. You can split your refund among up to three financial accounts. Checking, savings and certain retirement, health and education accounts may qualify. Use IRS Form 8888, Allocation of Refund (Including Savings Bond Purchases), to split your refund. Don’t useForm 8888 to designate part of your refund to pay your tax preparer. You should deposit your refund directly into accounts that are in your own name, your spouse’s name or both. Don’t deposit it in accounts owned by others. Some banks require both spouses’ names on the account to deposit a tax refund from a joint return. Check with your bank for their direct deposit requirements.

Senior Living Resident’s Rights: Restraints By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, Carrollton, 770.832.8243, mmurphy@cypresshealthgroup.com According to The Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987, “The resident has the right to be free from ... any physical or chemical restraint imposed for the purpose of discipline or convenience and not required to treat the resident’s medical symptoms.” The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) defines a physical restraint in a nursing facility as “any manual method or physical or mechanical device, material, or equipment attached or adjacent to the resident’s body that the individual cannot remove easily that restricts freedom of movement or normal access to one’s body.” Bed rails have been included in the definition of a physical restraint. Currently, the use of proper bed systems, including bed rails is being examined by hospitals, nursing homes and home care agencies since there have been a number of incidents and deaths that have occurred as people try to get out of beds. They have attempted to go over the rails, around the rails, and even through them. Some are disturbed to see a frail person in a bed without rails. However, in most cases the rails potentially cause more harm than good. Sometimes, a good compromise is one rail or half-rails. In cases where the resident simply will not stay in bed even at night, the nursing home might try a bed lower to the floor with pads around it to prevent injury if the resident does get up. What may be a restraint for one person may not be a restraint for another. If a resident expresses a desire for side rails because they aid in bed

mobility, then they may not be seen as a restraint. If a resident requests a lap belt so he can self-propel the wheelchair throughout the building and outdoors, and is able both cognitively and physically to remove it, the lap belt would not be seen as a restraint. All residents receive individual assessments by interdisciplinary teams of qualified, professional staff. Our goal in the nursing home is to be restraint free to the greatest degree possible. Quality care approaches are those targeted to keeping residents as active and independent as possible. It may involve increased activities, a strengthening program development or a medication review. Some express concern that failure to use a restraint will result in more frequent falls and more serious injuries, studies show that nonuse of restraints does not necessarily increase the rate of falls and sometimes lessens the incidence of serious injury when falls do occur. This does not mean that you should never ever see a resident with some kind of restraint. There are situations that are simply unavoidable for the resident’s safety, especially in order for the resident to retain some ability to self-ambulate. However, quality care and quality of life are the key goals for all people living in our nation’s nursing homes. It takes creative partnership between the resident, the family, and the caregivers to achieve these results.

In His Image Sevens Steps to Getting Unstuck By Johnetta Alston Lake. Johnetta is an actress, author, singer/songwriter, radio and television show host. You can contact her at iamgodsgirl720@gmail.com

A brick wall is a still a brick wall, if it’s shutting you down in some way. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is or how smooth the surface is, you know what I mean. No matter what you do, or how hard you try; nothing works. When you’ve had enough, you’ll do something. You’ll stop blaming everybody else and show up like a grown up. Now, right now, own who you are, where you are and more importantly, how you got there! It’s not easy, but your purpose and destiny, is riding on it. 1. Breathe! You can’t accomplish anything if you’re holding your breath! 2. Put it on paper. Whatever’s troubling you, it helps to clear the debris by writing it down. Get a piece of paper, draw a line down the center and put the issue in the proper column, Good/Bad, Pro’s/Con’s, Why/Why Not. What you name it isn’t important, just do it. Call it out! 3. Enlist help. Surround yourself with a team you trust. Everybody doesn’t need to be, nor do they deserve to be, in your inner circle. Pick 5 friends that have your back no matter what and who’ll give it to you straight. 4. Be honest with yourself. You know the stuff you say and admit when nobody’s around. That doesn’t mean bad stuff, please. But it does mean the real, in your face, make peace and forgive yourself kind of talk. The kind that gets ugly and there isn’t enough tissue in the room! 5. Decide what you want…..for real, then make it happen. Take baby steps, just do something. Create a plan. You wouldn’t build a house without a plan, open a business without a plan and YOU can’t walk around without a plan. Are we clear??? 6. Trust yourself, and know without a doubt, that you’ll be okay. You’re going to be better than okay, you’re going to be just fine. 7. Forgive yourself, pray and believe!

Mental Health Controlling Your Anger Before It Controls You By Jon Sullivan, President, G.R.A.C.E. Counseling Services (Global Relief Association for Crises & Emergencies), 678.715.4722, globalreliefassociation.com

Anger has been defined as an emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong. Epictetus once said, “men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.” In today’s society, there is a great deal that has the potential of contributing to our anger if we are not careful. Anger is something that everyone deals with at one time or another in our life. Sometimes it is an ongoing issue. Anger can manifest itself on the job, at work, at home, in traffic, or even on a little league baseball field. Oftentimes anger is stirred up in us because the world in which we live does not line up with the world in which we envision. In the final analysis though, we are left with a choice. I would not say that an individual is an angry person, but they are angering. That is, they are choosing to be angry to cope with a situation that has occurred in their life. There are four areas to consider when dealing with uncontrolled anger. First of all make the choice to suppress the angering. Notice, I did not say repress the angering. Suppressing the angering means that we subdue the angering. We take control of it. Proverbs 29:11 states, “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” Second, assess the angering. Why is it there? There is always more than meets the eye. Oftentimes, we are quick to point out the speck in another’s eye when we have a beam in ours (Matthew 7:3-5). A third area to consider is confession. When we confess to the Lord He promises forgiveness (entirely new subject). A fourth concept is to access the power of God. Our anger issue can be so strong and overriding we need the power of God to help us move beyond.

funny” or has a small piece of skin hanging. The biting

Any decision to overcome a problem requires the ability to stick to the plan. Many people are overcoming weight problems by choosing a good program and continuing with it until their goal is reached. Overcoming nail biting requires that same kind of discipline. Nail biting is the most common of the “nervous habits” that start in childhood, which also include thumb sucking, hair twisting or tugging, and tooth grinding. Nail biting is most common in over stressed children, tends to run in families, and is the most likely of the nervous habits to continue into adulthood. Like other compulsive behaviors nail biting is usually done to diminish anxiety. What makes this a compulsive behavior is that the individual is driven to perform the behavior even though their mind tells them it’s damaging. In fact, most nail biters are not pleased with the effects of biting—they don’t like how it looks or feels on the fingers, nails, or cuticles. Not only does nail biting ruin the look of the nails, it can also transfer infectious organisms from the fingers to the mouth and vice versa. This infection causes the skin around the nails to become red, sore, and irritated. Often nail biters are perfectionists, or at least push themselves very hard. They probably have a whole set of other “worrying” habits. They

can then take on a life of its own beyond the “repair”. One of the best innovations the nail industry has produced is a bite-no-more cream. Thousands of people are seeing results with this all-natural herbal treatment cream. The cream is massaged into the nails and cuticles morning, night and after hand washing. The aloe and vitamins A, B, C, & E enriched cream results in fewer hang nails, smooth cuticles, stronger nails and faster healing. The cream is odorless and is formulated to prevent nail biting by causing an unpleasant taste that reminds you not to bite. A professional recovery program and good home care products meet three very important healing steps—hydration, maintenance, and protection. A moisturizing cuticle oil and the bite-no-more cream hydrates dry, irritated cuticles. The weekly maintenance manicures keep the cuticles and nails smooth, clean, and conditioned and this helps overcome the compulsive need to bite. The fingernails will need to be strengthened as they begin to grow out and a nail strengthener provides protection for the nails. A professional recovery program can help you keep the discipline it takes to overcome your damaging nail biting habit.

Sunshine Needs a Home

Sunshine is a wonderful dog. She is part Jack Russell Terrier, but because she is medium-sized, she is probably mixed with a larger breed. Her coat is all white, except for a perfectly balanced black and tan mask on her face and head. Even though she is an adult - around five years old - she still looks young. She is well-behaved, patient, and quiet, and she walks well on a leash. You can see additional photos of Sunshine on the Carroll County Humane Society’s website: www.carrollcountyhumane.org. Just link to “Adopt a Shelter Pet” from the home page. If you would like to find out more about her, you can visit the shelter or call them at 770.214.3590 or email Lisa Barrett, the shelter manager, at lbarrett@ carrollcountyga.com. Sunshine and all the animals in adoption at the shelter have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, and tested for heart worm (dogs) or feline AIDS/leukemia (cats). They have also been microchipped and come with 30 days of pet health insurance.

Landscaping

Transplanting Your Shrubs By Kate Wright, who owns Bloom’n Gardens Landscape. She is a degreed Botanist, Certified Arborist, and Certified Pesticide Applicator, & Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, www.bloomngardens.com • 404.314.1474

Have you ever experienced that “oh dear” moment when you realized that a plant has been planted in the wrong place and is now beginning to take over. Perhaps it is a Japanese maple planted along the front walk, or a Camellia Japonica planted too close to the foundation. The best way to avoid these mistakes is to put careful planning into selecting the proper plant for the spot in the first place, but hey hindsight is 20/20, right? So what can you do about it now? Many shrubs and small trees respond reasonably well to transplanting. How quickly you can transplant after you have made the decision depends on a few factors. 1. How important is it for your transplant to be successful? 2. How soon do you need to transplant? 3. What type of plant do you want to transplant? Ideally, you want to root prune your shrub at least six months in advance to ensure the most successful transplant. Root pruning reduces the overall size of your shrub’s root ball. You see, the workhorses of the root system are the feeder roots found at the outer perimeter of a plant’s root ball. By cutting down the size of the root ball in advance of transplanting, you allow the plant to produce new feeder roots, giving your plant a better chance of survival after transplanting. So how do you prune the roots if they are underground? Since the majority of a plant’s root system is 6” to 24” below the soil surface, you can simply take a sharp spade and cut a ring around the plant that is slightly smaller than the root ball you want to transplant. If you want to transplant a larger specimen, you may want to actually dig a trench around the plant and back fill it with fresh soil. So you have done everything right and it is now time to perform the actual transplant. The most important thing is to first dig the new hole where you will be transplanting your shrub. This will minimize the amount of time your root ball is exposed to the outside air. Next, carefully dig around your plant releasing the root ball from the soil and wrap it in natural burlap to hold the root system together. Use either twine or pins to lash the burlap tightly around the root ball. Always use a wheelbarrow or cart to move the plant from one location to the other so as to protect the root ball from cracking and breaking. Plant the root ball slightly higher than in the previous hole, back fill, mulch and water immediately. Pay close attention to watering, especially during the first growing season following transplant. Remember root balls can be very heavy, so seek a professional to assist you with any plants that may need to find a new home in your landscape.

The Douglas County Master Gardeners meet the first Thursday of each month, February though November, at St. Julian’s Episcopal Church, at 6:30pm. www.dcdirt.org

Cleaning May Actually Save You Money! If you find yourself late on paying bills (because you can’t find them), replacing items you still have (because you don’t know where they are), and eating out more often than you need to (because your kitchen is too cluttered and messy for regular cooking), a little spring cleaning may actually save you money. You may not even realize the ways that a clean house can also be a money saver until you live in one.

Town and Country Garden Club The Town and Country Garden Club meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at members’ homes. All meetings include a covered dish dinner, fellowship and an informative program on gardening and related subjects. Everyone is welcome. For more information contact Linda Hampton at 770.920.7838

real estate Buyers Get a Second Chance to Own a Home By Donna Agan-Williams, Keller Williams Realty Cityside, 770.856.1549.

Possibly the biggest news in home lending is an opening up of credit to people who have experienced a bankruptcy, foreclosure or short sale due to an “economic event.” This loan can give these individuals a new shot at the “American Dream” of homeownership. The benefits to this “Second Chance Mortgage” are: Previous bankruptcy, foreclosures and short sales on your credit are okay; Only a 12-month waiting period; Low down payment of 3.5%; No income restrictions; Gift funds are permitted. To qualify, buyers must have experienced an economic event, defined as any occurrence beyond their control that resulted in a loss of employment, loss of income or a combination of both. The event must have caused a reduction in household income by 20% or greater that lasted at least six months or longer. Extending credit to consumers impacted by a job loss or other significant, negative economic event beyond their control will help people get back on track with their lives.

marriage & family The Family Connection A Family Health Journey By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries.kerrydrive5@yahoo.com

“God designed our bodies to be healthy, providing everything we need to thrive and live abundantly.” This is the first sentence on the front flap of “The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life” by Rick Warren, Daniel Amen and Mark Hyman and I couldn’t be more excited! The book focuses on five areas – faith, food, fitness, focus and friends. What’s really exciting is that it includes information on food sensitivities, detoxing, avoiding chemicals and additives and eating “real foods”. For the last 10 years, I’ve been on this journey and I often feel like a lost Christian in a new-age genre. Thank you – let’s get Christians into this game! There are general principles that apply to all of us, but since God made each of us in a unique and special way, each person needs to customize a plan. Our son is allergic to eggs, dairy, soy, wheat, peanuts, gluten and casein, so we had some built-in motivation to take this stuff seriously. I truly believe that this life-style has helped my son be all God made him to be in spite of his various special needs. I do tons of reading and research; and I adjust as I explore. I strive to be organic, local and grass-fed. I also try to avoid chemicals, GMOs, food dyes, casein, gluten, rSBT, high-fructose and all things hydrogenated or hydrolyzed. I use organic cleaning and personal care supplies. I use homeopathic medicine, such as elderberry immune syrup, raw apple cider vinegar, willow

bark and colloidal silver. I take natural supplements, detox, get chiropractic adjustments and do metabolic conditioning. Our son received his shots when he was little, but we’ve said ‘no’ to the vaccines for pre-teens and teens. I get a thermo graphic image done instead of a mammogram. For me personally, my severe dry skin, migraines, spring allergies and insomnia are gone. I’ve lost some weight, gained muscle and feel great – 42 is awesome! We’ve not been to a doctor or taken an anti-biotic in over four years. (Not to say we wouldn’t, we just haven’t had the need.) My parents started on their health journey almost two years ago. They have both lost weight, sleep better and have more energy. My dad is 70 and has reduced his diabetic, cholesterol and hypertension numbers. My mom is 66 and had terrible acid reflux and digestion issues. Within the first 6 months of making these healthy life-style changes, they were both off all of their medications. This may all seem confusing or sound crazy; I understand. It can be overwhelming. It can seem really expensive. (We spend more on healthy alternatives, but we spend nothing on doctors or medications.) I encourage you to research on your own or start by checking out The Daniel Plan – the book has good info and there are lots of additional articles on the website. Pray about it. Start small and trust God to show you how to care for the Holy Spirit’s temple that He gave you. The Message Bible states 1 Corinthians 6:20 like this: “Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works.

Celebrate Recovery Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered support group for people with hurts, habits, or hang-ups. The group meets at Ephesus Baptist Church, 8445 Ephesus Church Road in Villa Rica at 7pm every Friday. For more information call 770.942.4327.

Excited to Serve In Revelation 3:16 it says, “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” The phrase “lukewarm Christianity” is an oxymoron – meaning it is a contradictory phrase. Either you are living for the Lord or you are not. Jesus does not give us a middle ground. Earlier in the New Testament Jesus told his disciples, “whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:38 Contrasting this Christian lifestyle is the Christian lifestyle of service. A life truly lived for the Lord is a life surrendered to serving Him. As believers we are given at least one or more spiritual gifts. In using our spiritual gifts we are not only obedient, but it also fulfills us spiritually. Living a life of service is how one avoids the threat of a lukewarm Christianity. It may be time to evaluate where you are spiritually. What temperature are you spiritually? Plugging into a local body of believers allows you to exercise your spiritual gifts. Not only will you be a blessing, but more often than not you will also receive a blessing as well. It’s a great time to take your spiritual temperature and get excited to serve! ~Missy Article sponsored by Discovery Church, an Acts 29 church plant next to Walmart & QuikTrip in Villa Rica. www.thediscoverychurch.org

The psalmist wrote: “For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother’s womb…My frame was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth. Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them” (vv.13-16). Amazing, isn’t it, what goes on that we do not see, even though sonograms and scans provide glimpses of what’s going on inside our bodies. Likewise, even with time lapse photography, we can’t see all the changes going on

and bleak, he turned again and again to the story of Joseph that’s told in chapters 37-50 in the book of Genesis. He points out that Joseph, while serving more than two years in prison for a crime he had not committed, had no reason to think his circumstances would change. One night when Joseph went to bed as usual, he had no idea that within 24 hours his life would change in a miraculous way. But it did because God had been working behind the scenes to cause all the bad things that had happened to Joseph to work out for good. May we wait expectantly for brighter tomorrows. After all, God is at work. © 2014 by Johnnie Ann Burgess Gaskill, www.jgaskill.com

medical directory & guide Reduce Your Risk for Complications During Pregnancy By Stacey A. Anderson, MD, Villa Rica OB/GYN. Dr. Anderson is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology with Villa Rica OB/GYN, part of Tanner Medical Group. More information is available online at www.VillaRicaOBGYN.org or by calling 770.456.3850. Risks are a part of any pregnancy. There are some risk factors you can control while others — such as your age, carrying more than one baby or having a chronic medical condition — you cannot. Controlling the risk factors that you can is important in helping to avoid complications during pregnancy. Complications during pregnancy can lead to preterm delivery, low birth weight and other health problems for your baby. Know What to Control The risk factors you can’t control during pregnancy include your age (being a teenager or being older than 35), having a chronic medical condition (such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer or even gum disease) and experiencing complications during previous pregnancies can all increase your risk for complications. That’s why it’s so important to control the ones you can, such as: • Being overweight, obese or underweight • Using tobacco • Drinking alcohol • Using illegal drugs or abusing prescription drugs

If any of these apply to you, you should have an honest and candid conversation with your obstetrics provider. He or she has helped patients with these problems in the past, and can help you now. The end goal for both the mother and the provider is the delivery of a happy, healthy baby; your obstetrics provider is your partner in making that happen. Make Sure You See Your Doctor Make arrangements to see an obstetrics specialist as soon as you learn you are pregnant. Receiving adequate prenatal care throughout your pregnancy ensures that we can catch potential problems with the pregnancy early and intervene to better ensure delivery of a healthy baby. Be open and candid with your patient care team; knowing about your current lifestyle and past medical history will help your physician better serve you.

WGTC withdraws football plans West Georgia Technical College recently announted it is withdrawing a proposal to add football as a competitive sport. Interim President Pat Hannon said the program has been under review and it has become evident that the College could not continue to sustain the requirements for the program as well as the associated long-term costs. “After careful consideration, West Georgia Technical College has chosen to withdraw a request that was made to the Technical College System of Georgia to approve football as an additional athletic program for the Golden Knights,” Hannon said.
