Mr PJ’s Buffalo Wings in Villa Rica By Jason Robbins, Villa Rica News & Views Mr. PJ’s Buffalo Wings in Villa Rica is one of those places you want to tell all of your friends about, because you’re afraid they’re missing out on some amazing food. Their menu is filled with wings, salads, burgers, sandwiches, seafood and even chicken, beef and salmon teriyaki served with rice and an eggroll. They also have a kids menu. I have to begin with their pièce de résistance - their wings. They are honestly some of the best wings I have ever had. We order ours medium-wet and they are always dripping in wing sauce. Which, by the way, is apparently the owner’s own recipe and I can tell you - the it’s is perfect. Mr PJ’s does not skimp on quality either; their wings are huge. Their multitude of sauces range from traditional flavors like mild, medium and hot to honey bbq, honey mustard, teriyaki, lemon pepper, garlic pepper, jerk and honey. But if you’re not in the mood for wings, they have so many other choices... We recently ‘discovered’ their hamburgers and once again, they are some of the most delicious we have ever tasted. The hamburgers are perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. They all included just the exact right amount of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup. You can also make the meal into a combo and add some of their perfectly cooked fries. I know I briefly mentioned some their menu options above, but I thought I would expand a little to truly give you a mental picture of their huge selection (which equals something for everyone in the family). Their salads include: garden salad, chef salad, crispy or grilled chicken salad, chicken salad and a buffalo chicken salad. Seafood choices include catfish, tilapia and shrimp. All of their seafood combos are served with fries, coleslaw, hush-puppies, tartar sauce and a drink. Their sandwiches range from the Philly cheese chicken or steak to a chicken salad sandwich, plus they have a gyro wrap and a chicken sandwich available in grilled, crispy or buffalo chicken. Their kids menu choices are a junior burger combo, hot dog combo, grilled cheese combo, two piece chicken finger combo and five piece wings combo, all served with fries and a drink. And as if this wasn’t’ enough their sides and appetizers includes onion rings, fried okra, coleslaw, potato salad, cream cheese pop-

pers, cheddar cheese poppers, cheese sticks, beer-battered mushrooms, egg rolls and fried dill pickles. They have great lunch specials Monday through Friday from 11am to 3pm including one of those delicious hamburgers we talked about, fries and a drink for just $6.49. Mr. PJ’s Buffalo Wings is available for dine-in or take-out. They are open Monday through Thursday from 11pm to 9pm, Friday from 11am to 10pm, Saturday from 12pm to 10pm and Sunday from 12pm to 8pm. You may call 770-459-2828 for more information or to place a take-out order. Stop by and visit them at 153 Tri County Plaza in the Tri-County Plaza. We wanted to add, Mr. PJ’s did not pay for us to place this in. We just enjoy them so much, we wanted to let you guys know how great they are.

Frostbite and Your Pet

By Dixie Popham - Owner, Pet Set Grooming, 3313 Hwy. 5 Across from Publix, 770-949-0579 Prolonged exposure to the cold can cause frostbite — the death of tissue in the extremities. So, a few simple precautions: If your dog is an outside dog with a thick double coat, is accustomed to frigid winter weather and has a sheltered place to get away from wind and rain, he can probably stay outside no matter what. But if he’s old, arthritic, or debilitated in some way or if his coat’s not heavy enough, let him sleep inside when the temperature dips. If she enjoys her daily excursions, by all means continue, but watch out for chemical ice-melting compounds on driveways, sidewalks, and streets. If your pet is a puppy or geriatric dog, don’t leave her outside without supervision, especially in snow.

Bark Avenue Pet Salon opens new location

Bark Avenue Pet Salon has opened a second location in the Villa Rica area. The new salon will be known as Bark Avenue West Side, and is located in the Temple and Draketown area on Buchanan Highway, beside the Georgia Peach Oyster Restaurant. The new location is three times the size of their current location on Highway 61, about three miles south of Wal-Mart. The location also has 12 acres of land, and there is much more room for the dogs to play outside. The new location will offer grooming, boarding, doggie day care, and obedience training. It is open at 9am Tuesday through Saturday. Cynthia Lanzo is the owner of both locations. For more information about Bark Avenue Pet Salon, you may visit their website at www.barkavega.com . To reach the new location, you may call 770-562-BARK, or you may call the Highway 61 location at 770-214-8404.

MONEY MANAGEMENT - GOD’S WAY By Frank Boone. Frank is a United Methodist Minister currently serving Wesley Chapel in Villa Rica. He has worked in the banking industry for more than sixteen years. The New Year is a good time for new beginnings. January stirs many of us to begin new habits or vow to stop old ones. So this January might be a good time to consider some new money management techniques. Would you like to consider what the Bible teaches about money? I believe the old adage; ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail’ is a basic truth. In Luke 14 Jesus

provides us a teaching on planning ahead. We could summarize this teaching by saying; a wise person will count the cost – or be considered foolish. The two major reasons many of us do not manage our money are: we never have enough and we do not know how to begin. So if you are interested in money management we can start this month. One of my favorite techniques is to determine where is the money going now? Years ago after my son graduated from college he called and asked how would I recommend someone begin to manage their money. I think his motivation came after he paid some ‘return item’ fees to his bank. I told him first look where your money is going now. Most people are very surprised when they discover “how much” and “where” the money was spent. So if you are interested in starting something new pull out your checkbook(s), debit slips and ATM receipts. Then make a list of where your money was spent last year. Create major expense categories like: auto loan, mortgage / rent, water, gas, electric, home phone, cell phone, entertainment, food, auto repair, gasoline, clothing. This exercise can also help you later with income tax preparation. Each month we will take another step on the journey to learn to better manage our money. We will either manage our money or our money will manage us. Will you join me and begin something new this year? Remember a wise person will count the cost.

home&garden DECORATING TIPS

Creative Combinations = Home Blending By Karen Hartley, a local interior designer and decorator. As owner of Interiors by Decorating Den, she has been in business for 23 years. She can be reached at 770-459-9096. If you’ve ever had the task of combining furnishings from two different households, you know the difficulties this dilemma can present. Whether it’s a blended family, a new marriage, new housemates or even furnishings coming from a family member who is downsizing, mixing all these often diverse elements from different styles of decor can be challenging. So here are a few tips to help you get started! First, take a careful inventory of all pieces. Include not only the large items, such as furniture, but also items such as area rugs, lamps, pictures and even accessories that you may want to incorporate into your new decorating plan. Be careful not to assign where the piece will go yet. Just because it has always been in the living room doesn’t mean that’s the only place it can go! For larger pieces, you may want to take measurements. It’s always easier to measure the space and see if the pieces will fit before you actually bring the furniture in. Once your list is complete, go through it carefully and check off the items you definitely want to keep. Your final list may include antiques, high quality furnishings, and items of sentimental value. It could even include that comfortable old chair that you’ve enjoyed many hours sitting in with a good book in hand. If you have a large quantity to access, you may even want to prioritize or rank the pieces based on which are most important to you – or to the others will share this space. It’s key in planning your new room design that you create harmony between the sizes of different pieces of furniture you select

for your new room. Simply defined, harmony is the pleasing and orderly arrangement of all design parts so that they form a consistent and satisfying whole. Another key consideration in creating a harmonious eclectic style is to definitely consider mixing periods and styles in your furniture pieces because it will not only make for a more harmonious feeling in your room, but will ultimately create a more interesting decorating scheme. It’s important to remember that when you decide to mix different periods or styles of furnishings, that your pieces all be in the same or similar mood – that is, either formal or informal, gay and frivolous or serious, dignified and formal. So, what do you do if the items you wish to keep don’t blend or match with your new homes’ existing décor? Take heart! The eclectic look has been officially “in” for years now. Gone are the days when every single piece of furniture has to match. The Dallas Ewing clan of the 70’s and 80’s may have had a perfectly matched “suite” in every room, but not the high tech families of today’s generation. The first consideration will be scale. Large rooms with high ceilings will best take larger pieces. Mother’s small chairs will be great in a bedroom but may look tiny in the family room! Small end tables may seem really out of place next to a large chair. Place the smaller pieces in smaller rooms.

FAmilY CoNNeCtioN A Foundation for the New Year By Kerry Patuka. A Villa Rica resident who is a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries, a consulting, speaking and training ministry for churches and children’s ministry. Contact her at kerry Many of us start the year out with a New Year’s Resolution. Sometimes we share these with others; sometimes it’s just a quiet internal desire. Either way, I think we have all experienced that resolution that starts out great and then flops. Of course, some of us have experienced that resolution that never really gets going in the first place. I think if we’re honest about it, many times the year ends and nothing has changed. Is it just some silly, human trait that causes us to want a fresh start, a better year ahead or a new thing in our lives? No, it’s not. God cares about us and wants the best for us. In fact, he has quite a few things to say on this topic in the Bible. Yes, the God of the entire universe cares about us and here are a few scripture verses to encourage us as we start a new year. Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) “For I know the plans I have for you,” says

the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Job 8:7 (CEV) Your future will be brighter by far than your past. Deuteronomy 11:12 (NIV) It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it, from the beginning of the year to its end. Revelation 21:4–6 (NIV) And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Ezekiel 36:25-27 (NLT) And I will give you a new heart, with new

Born: November 21, 2010 Weight: 6lbs, 7oz Length: 19 inches Parents: Matthew & Julie Staton Grandparents: Keith & Jennifer Staton; Len & Lori Covington and right desires and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart. Philippians 3:13-14 (CEV) My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done. 1 Peter 1:3 (MSG) What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! As you begin a new year, God is there with you. No matter where you are or what you are going through, use Scripture as a foundation for your New Year’s Resolution. Select a few verses to memorize or write one or two down and display them where you will see them throughout the day. Encourage your kids to do the same thing too. As you go through the year, search the Bible and find Scripture that will encourage you and guide you to live the life that God desires for you to live.

Back Pain

Submitted by Dr. Jada Reese, Tanner Pain Management Center, 150 Henry Burson Drive, Carrollton, 770-812-5720, www.tanner.org If you have ever experienced back pain, you know that it can literally stop you in your tracks— making it difficult to perform daily activities. However, you may not realize that back pain is one of the most common and expensive ailments in the United States. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Americans spend at least $50 billion every year in search of back pain relief. Studies suggest that back pain is also one of the most common reasons for missing work, accounting for some 83 million lost work days each year. For some people, back pain will resolve itself after a few weeks with little to no treatment. However, others will go on to develop persistent back pain that lasts much longer. Researchers have not found a good scientific explanation for this. What Back Pain Feels Like Back pain can occur anywhere along the spine and may include the following symptoms: • Persistent muscle aches, spasms or stiffness

26

Villa Rica News & Views

• Stabbing or sharp shooting pain • Difficulty standing or walking for prolonged periods of time • Limited range of motion • Pain that radiates from the neck to the arms or from the lower back to the legs • Pain that gets worse with certain body movements or activities Possible Causes The most common cause of back pain is an injury resulting from an abrupt twisting movement in the neck or lower back area when lifting heavy objects or from overexertion at home, work or at the gym. Other causes of back pain—for example, osteoporosis, arthritis, sciatica or a ruptured or herniated disk—may involve structural damage to the bones and nerves in the spine. The damage can happen abruptly in an accident or over a period of time with aging. Risk Factors Experts are not sure what leads to chronic back pain, but the risk factors include poor posture, poor physical condition, obesity, smoking, aging and prior injury. Treatments Most episodes of back pain resolve within a few days to a few weeks, using basic treatments such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, hot or cold packs, muscle relaxants, physical therapy and hot showers. However, when back pain becomes a major issue, it is time to seek the help of a healthcare professional. Many pain management centers offer a wide variety of treatments for back pain—from medications to interventional nerve blocks to spinal cord stimulation with an electrical signal. Relief can last from a couple of weeks to a year or longer. Many centers also evaluate patients for surgery if other treatment options fail and accepts referrals for patients who have previously undergone surgery that failed to reduce their pain. “The experience of pain is mediated by several factors that frequently affect your sleeping pattern, mood, physical activity and social functioning,” said Jada Reese, MD, with Tanner Pain Management Center. “Many people have a misconception that pain management centers just prescribe ‘pain pills’ to patients. In fact, many centers try to minimize medications by exploring other treatment options such as interventional nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulation, both of which have been very effective in eliminating neck and lower back pain.”

Not only do WellStar surgeons perform more than 40,000 procedures every year – more than any other health system in metro Atlanta – but they also train other doctors. They’ve shared their expertise on minimally invasive procedures with leading U.S. medical centers and on spinal surgery with doctors from around the world. Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?

Fret Not

Have you ever fretted over something or someone? I was reading in Psalm 37 where David is talking about the enemies he was facing and he uses the word “fret” numerous times. Fretting takes time and energy. I know when I am burdened by circumstances or by the actions of people, I have the tendency to fret. But it is clear from the Bible that is not what we should do. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” It goes on to say, “Refrain from anger and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.” We cannot control the actions or words of others, but we can control our response to them. This is where we need to “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Before you can fret your mind has to be thinking on the very thing that is troubling you. If you are facing a person or circumstance that is causing you distress, don’t focus on that. Instead make a point to be still before the Lord. Dive into the Psalms. I have a friend who had a history of struggling with depression. She said reading in Psalms helps to comfort her so that she could be still before the Lord. In this day and age one has to purpose to rest. It is only when we get our eyes off of people and circumstances that we can truly rest in the Lord.

Relationship or Resolution?

Every January we all decide we are going to change our lives in one way or another. We make resolutions to lose weight, eat healthy, quit smoking, go back to school, watch less television, find a church, improve our fitness, and get our finances in order. Health club memberships soar, diet plans sell out, Dave Ramsey financial seminars are full, self-help books fly off the shelves, and nicotine patches are in big demand. Thing is, the great majority of our resolutions are not new at all. We’ve made them and most of them proved powerless or fleeting at best. So I propose a different plan this year. I just spent a wonderful day at Callaway Gardens viewing the Christmas lights with my kids and grandkids. We began our journey right after church by sharing lunch. Then onward to the Gardens for the lights, followed by a nice dinner at one of the Garden restaurants. All five grandkids were there and, as far as I was able to discern, they were not even considering any New Year’s resolutions. They were mainly focused on enjoying themselves and the people around them. Our youngest one, a year old, did lose focus a couple of times when he got hungry or cold, but

he was able to re-focus once those basic needs were met. What’s that got to do with resolutions? I think we can learn a lot from them. Jesus said they are a lot like Heaven. Not one of them, except for the aforementioned concern over basic needs, was focused on what was wrong with life. They were focused on what was right. And they had a blast along with all of us. Instead of resolutions, let’s focus on relationships, starting with the one we have with Jesus. Let’s pour ourselves into having a deep, meaningful relationship with Him. I have found that to be the key to great life. Instead of focusing on what needs to change, focus on what’s right. I am not good at making change happen. He is the master of change. All those things I want to change but cannot seem to, happen organically when I just focus on enjoying life with Jesus. Just hanging out with Him and making Him my center of attention, has brought more lasting change to my life than all of my efforts. And it was a lot more fun. That one relationship is worth more than all our resolutions combined. Great life is found in that relationship, not in a resolution. By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, 770-832-8243, MMurphy@GramercyHealth.com If you have been reading this column I am positive you have on your list of New Year’s resolutions to complete your Georgia Advance Directive for Health Care and to appoint an agent for Health Care decisions. I’m proud of you! Don’t forget to give a copy to your doctor, your significant other and/or whomever you have appointed to be your agent. In the world of long term care we are entrusted with the mission of making sure you are taken care of according to your wishes and in a manner that preserves your dignity to the extent possible. Without direction from you, we (and you) are at the mercy of your family members. Most family members are by far the most wonderful people on earth and absolutely are on the same page with you about what your wishes would be. By completing a Georgia Advance Directive for Health Care you are simply taking the guesswork out of it. However, in contrast, without clear instruction, there are some family members who are unable to make decisions and unable to put themselves in your shoes and figure out what is best for YOU. With the best will in the world, they are unable to rise above their own beliefs, histories, struggles, doubts, fears and concerns. I have discussed before in this column that we, by regulation, are the defenders of your right to make decisions for yourself. We cannot force you as a resident to do anything you don’t want to do. Yes, we can educate you, cajole, beg, plead to an extent but we can’t MAKE you do anything. Family members have a really hard time with that. We get lots of phone calls demanding that we make Mom take a bath, make Dad take his medicine, etc. We spend a lot of time explaining that we really can’t. You are in charge, even when it is a life or death matter. Sure, we can offer all the options, but we can’t decide for you and neither can your family members unless you give them that authority OR unless you get sick and can’t tell us yourself and didn’t leave instructions. Just because you are sick or even confused sometimes doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to assert your will. Don’t forget and make sure no one else does either – state your wishes clearly ahead of time. Appoint one person as your Health Care agent – and designate a back up.

Personal Trainers Corner MAKE THIS YEAR....DIFFERENT!

By Leslie Austin - Leslie Austin has been in the fitness industry for 16 years as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor. She is currently employed with Gold’s Gym in Douglasville. You can reach her at LesAus10@aol.com A recent research survey found that 40 to 45% of American adults make one or more resolutions each year. Among the top New Year’s resolutions are about weight loss, exercise, and stopping to smoke. While a lot of people who make New Year’s resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. So here are eight tips to help you make this year different by maintaining that New Year resolution. 1. Visualize your end result. A great idea is to place pictures or other types of tangible reminders of your end goal where you can see them every day. 2. Get a fitness assessment to fiGure out your startinG point and learn your strenGths and weaknesses. If you are one of those that year after year, make the resolution to get healthy and lose weight this is a good place to start. Going

forward, continue to get a fitness reassessment every eight to 12 weeks to track progress to celebrate your success along the way and to help you stay motivated. 3. a Goal without a plan is only a wish. Stop wishing you were ______ and start mapping out a concrete plan to get there. Surround yourself with information and resources to help you reach your goal. 4. set small, achieVable Goals that build momentum. Aim low. It goes without saying that most New Year’s resolutions are easier announced (or written) than done-but if you set the bar too high, you’re doomed from the start. Instead of a sweeping declaration like “I will lose 30 pounds by April and finally fit into that dress,” target a goal that’s more attainable, like losing 10 or 15 pounds. Long-term goals are important, but short-term goals provide bursts of motivation with each mini success. 5. create a schedule to keep yourself consistent. if you are like me eVerythinG is scheduled. So if you need this type of accountability than schedule it. Set deadlines for when each step should be accomplished, and put them in your planner. This way you are committed to the goals, and they are part of your everyday life, not an abstract notion. 6. Journal your exercise and dietary intake on a daily basis. You have to know what you are consuming before you can truly get a handle on your weight loss plans. 7. chanGe up your exercise routine eVery four to six weeks. Strive for consistent progression in your program so that every workout is a challenge. 8. troubleshoot your excuses. Write them down, then ask yourself, “How would others respond to that?” You’ll be surprised at how impactful seeing them in writing can be!

Winston Academy is proud to announce Winston Christian Academy

Into Arts, Inc. Martial Arts Center moves to Historic Downtown Villa Rica

When Angie Smith opened the doors of Winston Academy seven years ago this fall, she had a dream in her heart and a vision for the future. Her husband, Glenn, and daughters, Jessica and Mandy, shared that dream. Angie believed then (and still does today) that God led her to the right property, opened doors “that no man can close” as the Scripture says, and sent families to be blessed by and to bless Winston Academy. She said back then, “I want to make a difference in the community.” Angie, Glenn, Jessica, and Mandy set out to do just that. They still want to make a difference. Since the fall of 2003, our community, along with the rest of our nation, has seen many ups and downs. Winston Academy has felt the pinch of the economic downturn. But Angie and her family stand firmly committed to the original vision of Winston Academy: “Quality Childcare is not Expensive. . .it’s Priceless!!” Remember, though, that anything that is alive and well is constantly changing and growing. Winston Academy is alive and well and will go into 2011 with a new name and broader mission. You’ll soon see the new sign (expected to be finished in early January) announcing Winston Christian Academy. Angie’s mission is to provide high quality early education for children six weeks old through the fifth grade. Winston Christian Academy is not a “daycare” or a “childcare center.” WCA is dedicated to teaching children and nurturing their growth in a positive Christian atmosphere. Your children will learn not only academic skills, but life skills that will help them develop into positive young boys and girls capable of coping with our stressful and ever-changing world. WCA offers GA Pre-K classes, currently hosting three classes with twenty students in each class. The private A Beka Christian classes are also available and highly recommended, starting with K-4 and going through fifth grade. The A Beka curriculum is a highly-structured program, excellent for accelerating students. Enrollment for next fall begins in mid-January, so make plans to visit WCA, meet Angie and her staff, and set your child’s future course for positive education. Winston Christian Academy’s mascot is the eagle. Eagles don’t follow the crowd. Eagles fly alone, high above the storms in life. WCA is not part of the crowd of ordinary childcare centers. Winston Christian Academy is a school dedicated to helping children excel in every area of life. Isaiah 40:31 says, “They that [hope in the Lord] shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles”. . . To learn more, call 770-949-7462.

Into Arts moved to downtown Villa Rica in late December to a larger location. The martial arts business was previously located behind the Quik Trip near the Walmart shopping center. The new Into Arts, Inc. location is next to Forever Berry’s Bistro, at 132 West Montgomery Street, also known as Hwy. 78 or Bankhead Hwy. It is next to Cinema Tavern, facing the railroad tracks in downtown historic Villa Rica. Into Arts, Inc. has been providing martial arts instruction in a safe family environment since 1995. The company is owned by Headmaster Daniel Lawing and his wife Cindy. Men, Women and younger individuals learn different types of martial arts at the same facility. The Martial Arts of TaeKwon Do (U. S. Chung Do Kwan Association), Hapki Do and Hanki Do (U. S. hapki Hae) and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (team Pedro Sauer) are all certified martial arts that are taught at Into Arts. Into Arts also teaches weapons such as staffs, swords, etc. Into Arts teaches martial arts for self defense from the ground up. Martial Arts are also beneficial to improve coordination, concentration and self discipline. The health benefits of training in martial arts include improving fitness, flexibility, weight loss, immune system and stress release. Martial Arts can be the right fit to keep individuals motivated to accomplish their goals, along with learning life saving skills. Into Arts has a variety of classes and times to choose from. Children and teens gain confidence to stop bullying which is a growing problem in our society. The self defense skills learned at Into Arts have been applied with success by Master Lawing students in real life situations. Master Lawing states, he has many students who have lost over 50 pounds of fat with training and diet over time. Master Lawing, says the success stories are amazing with his students. Some for example thought they could not participate due to an illness such as arthritis, etc., only to find they gained increased mobility. Master Lawing states we are not a gym, we are a family of martial artists who help each other reach goals. For more information about Into Arts, you may visit their website at www.intoarts.net or by calling the school at 770-459-9555.

the By Beverly Clements, The Centre @ Arbor Connection, 7475 Douglas Boulevard, 678-231-3195, www.TheArborConnection.com Almost as soon as you have chosen a wedding date and the site for the ceremony, one of your next big decisions will be to decide on the kind of reception you want and where it will be held. The reception should be a relaxed and joyful time for the bride and groom, their parents, members of the wedding party and guests, especially if the ceremony is a formal one. Planning early with skilled and reputable professionals is the key to a successful reception. Many decisions surrounding the reception hinge on the location you choose. For instance, if you plan to serve champagne, wine or other liquors at the reception, the you probably would not be able to do this inside a church facility. Another factor to consider in the location is whether the music you have chosen for the reception hours would be approved. Before getting too far into planning, find out what restrictions or polices are in effect for the use of the facility. Still another factor to consider is the date you have chosen for the wedding and reception. Some reception sites are much more in demand at certain seasons of the year than others. Thus, it is not too early to book a reception site nine to twelve months ahead of the date, especially if you choose a club, hotel, catering hall or restaurant.

Locations. Among common location sites for receptions, in addition to church reception halls, are hotels, restaurants, private

clubs or halls. At most of these, a complete catered food service may be available onsite. In many areas, lawns and gardens are popular choices for reception, especially during warm to moderate months of the year. Historical sites and antebellum mansions are other choices in many parts of the country. Some unusual backgrounds might be aboard a yacht, ship or boat, or even on the grounds of a winery or other meaningful spot. Each facility has different amenities that they offer. Some facilities will offer items ranging from simply tables and chairs to all inclusive wedding options. If a particular site interests you, then ask for a tour of the facility to determine whether it will accommodate our guests and your needs. Check for electrical outlets for the servers and entertainers and also if there are restrictions on the type and amount of decorations. Questions you will want to ask before settling on a site are:

• What length of time may you use the site? • Will your party be the only party to use the site that day? If not will there be any interference between the two events? • Is there an extra fee if you go beyond your contract time? • Who is the contact person and do you deal exclusively with them? • When will you be able to get in and begin setting up? • Will the site accommodate parking, restroom facilities and kitchen needs? • Does the fee include their clean-up service or do you have to provide this? • Are tables and chairs provided? • Is there a dance floor and what is the fee? • What is the maximum capacity of the site? You should also ask about fire escape facilities and if there is anything else you should be aware of before you sign a contract.

Types of Receptions. The key to the type of reception you decide on will depend largely on the time of day you hold it. For example, an evening reception might necessitate holding a simple buffet meal or even a formal sit-down dinner. In this case, it would usually be held between 6-9pm. A dinner reception is usually the most expensive type of reception due to the cost of the meal and amount of service required. Depending on the time of day, other choices include a brunch, a buffet luncheon, a tea or cocktail affair, or even simply light

refreshments, if held in the afternoon. Morning receptions are often a much smaller affair than a dinner reception and may center on a brunch-type menu. The afternoon or early evening buffet is a popular choice among brides since it offers some of the advantages of the formal reception but at a much lower cost because minimal table service is required. The variety of foods served and number of guests accommodated can be determined by the reception budget. Food station buffets are growing in popularity as they offer a different serving area for each type of food provided. Each food station offers a different type of food and can provide guests with different ethnic food alternatives.

Receiving Line. A popular tradition at most weddings is the receiving line, which normally is set up near the entrance to the reception site. This provides the wedding couple an opportunity to greet each guest and for the guests to meet both sets of parents. Formation of the receiving line traditionally goes as follows: First the bride’s mother, bride’s father, followed by the newlyweds and then the groom’s mother, and finally groom’s father. Some couples choose to have the bridal party participate in the receiving line. If the bridal party is participating in the receiving line they will line up following the groom’s father. Dances. Many wedding receptions include dancing among the guests. In these cases, an order of dances is normally observed. This dictates that the first song should be the newlywed couple’s favorite, and they should be the only ones on the dance floor at that time. Lights may be dimmed to give a more romantic effect. The next dance should be the bride with her father, and then the groom with his mother.

HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER By Beverly Clements, The Centre @ Arbor Connection, 7475 Douglas Boulevard, 678231-3195, www.TheArborConnection.com. Often the hectic planning and pressures that a wedding can bring are too much for a bride. That is why the idea of hiring a wedding consultant is so appealing. A wedding consultant not only serves as a liaison between you and wedding retailers and service providers but can also provide valuable advice and guidance. Many brides believe that a wedding consultant is just an added expense. It is true that hiring a consultant will add cost, but when you factor in the time saved, as well as the selection of vendors and service providers under their counsel, it is easy to see that a consultant can more than pay for themselves. A wed-

ding consultant knows the ropes and since she has done this hundreds of times, she knows all the right details to make your day truly special. A good consultant should be able to guide you and make suggestions that enforce your ideas. She should also be able to help you avoid costly mistakes and suggest alternatives. The consultant should be on hand during the rehearsal and ceremony to keep peace while enforcing the bride’s wishes. The hiring of a consultant should be conducted in much the same way you would hire any other wedding service provider. Interview several before making a final selection and be sure to choose one who appears to be on your wavelength. After all, you are trusting this person with your wedding.

a cocktail gathering to a five course sit-down meal for 300, a caterer can make or break the event. Therefore, it is best to select the caterer very carefully. The first step in booking a caterer is to ask friends and family for suggestions. A recent bride or professional consultant may be able to recommend someone. Next, ask the caterer for his or her credentials. A quality caterer should be able to produce, on demand a list of clients who have been pleased with their work. You should only hire a state-licensed caterer who has met all local health department standards and carries the necessary liability insurance. Otherwise, you could be sued if someone gets food poisoning, chips a tooth or chokes and you caterer is uninsured. Go over menu options with your caterer. Ask about house specialties and foods for these with dietary concerns. Most caterers will provide potential clients with samples of their work. Get a list of everything included in the services. Does this include quantities or bar fees? Ask about a security deposit and sales tax too. As a rule, you will want to avoid a caterer who asks for more than a 50% deposit up front. Some caterers charge a flat rate per head, while others charge separately for each item including overtime. For these reasons, you will need to request everything in writing. Many caterers provide their own linens and service utensils. If they do not provide theses, they might work closely with a supplier who does. Regardless, you will want to ask before supplying them yourself. When the big day arrives, you should insist that someone of authority form the catering service be on hand to insure that things run smoothly. Ultimately, you should let the attitude of the caterer dictate whether or not you hire his services. A caterer who appears over rushed, patronizing, or oblivious of your needs is not someone that you want involved in your event.
