Will return next week

Annual holiday tree lighting set for Friday It’s time once again for West Sacramento’s ultimate holiday celebration where community members are welcome to unite with the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, City of West Sacramento, local businesses, schools, churches, and community members for an evening under the stars you will never forget. West Capitol Avenue, in front of City Hall, will close on the evening of December 2 and become a Winter Wonderland. We are reimagining this year’s tree lighting to create an event and evening for all generations in West Sacramento. There will be live music and entertainment, shopping with local makers, a cocktail corner with local wine and beer (and hopefully a holiday craft cocktail), free kids activities including cookie decorating and games... and of course free pictures with Santa and the annual tradition of lighting our community holiday tree. Sponsorship opportunities may still be available. Contact the Chamber at 371-7042 or email info@WestSacramentoChamber.com for more information.

Toys For Tots collection Santa to arrive on fire truck: efforts now underway Here’s St. Nick’s schedule Since 1948, The Marine Corps League, Toys for Tots Foundation has been around for the distribution of toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive and patriotic citizens. The Yolo County Marine Corps League Detachment 627 is an integral part of this campaign. Now until Dec. 16, 2016 the detachment puts out boxes/ barrels in Yolo County/ West Sacramento for the collection of new toys. On December 17, the toys are distributed to Yolo County children. The City of West Sacramento has many businesses and citizens who have given generously to make a child at Christmas happy.

Yolo County Marine Corps Detachment 627 wants to thank all the citizens and the following businesses in West Sacramento for their contribution to Toys for Tots. The West Sacramento Fire Department, in conjunction with the West Sacramento Firefighters’ Association, is preparing for the annual “Santa Run” through West Sacramento. With the help of many off-duty firefighter “elves,” Santa will be riding through various neighborhoods on an elaborately decorated fire truck “sleigh” and handing out candy canes purchased and donated by the West Sacramento Firefighters’ Association. Additionally, Santa will have a pickup truck following his “sleigh” with helpers collecting any canned food donations for the needy. The West Sacramento Firefighters’ Association would like to extend its most sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who come out to make canned food donations, as well as to the Fire Chief and City Manager, for permitting the usage and

decoration of the ladder truck for this annual tradition. This year the Santa Run is scheduled for six nights beginning at 6 p.m. each night. Special Conservation Found Ring: A reader found a ring at Raley’s on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and Stewardship Program would love to get it back to its owner. Contact Jennifer to identify at 806-8241. sign-up for California Yolo County Library rice producers open California rice producers can sign up for a new conservation program through the end of December. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service is accepting applications for the new Conservation Stewardship Program as part of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) funding awarded to the USA Rice – Ducks Unlimited Stewardship Partnership. Other local partners include the California Rice Commission, Northern California Water Association, and numerous regional water districts. The RCPP assists landowners and rice producers who voluntarily implement conservation and management practices that improve irrigation efficiencies, control sediment and nutrient runoff, and provide waterfowl habitat on rice production lands. CSP updates include methods and software for evaluating applications designed to assist producers in determining if and when they are meeting stewardship thresholds. The tools allow producers to pick practices and enhancements and see potential payment scenarios early in the process. The NRCS encourages producers, through CSP, to adopt the cutting-edge technologies and new management techniques that include irrigation water management, precision agriculture applications, new soil amendments to improve water quality and more. “The program will provide California’s farmers and ranchers even more opportunities for conservation and

greater flexibility at the local level to prioritize resource concerns and conservation approaches,” said Carlos Suarez, NRCS California state conservationist. “Locally customized CSP tools will also improve the customer experience during application evaluations.” This special RCPP CSP sign-up is targeted for rice production acreage in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo and Yuba counties. The project will provide a special CSP allotment of 18,000 acres in 2017 to California rice growers. The application deadline for this special RCPP CSP is Dec. 30, for the first ranking pool. NRCS operates under a continuous sign-up, however specific deadlines are used for ranking, contracting and funding. Additional ranking pools and deadlines may be established if more acres are available. People interested in the additional state or initiative-based opportunities the updated CSP will offer can find information on the new CSP portal at http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/csp. This one-stop shop, which provides information to help producers determine whether CSP is right for them, will be continually updated as more information becomes available. Changes that producers can expect to see include nearly double the enhancements and conservation practices offered and better reporting tools to tell producers the results of their conservation efforts on their land.

Offers Two Programs, Two Ways to Give Back The Yolo County Library is offering residents and library card holders two opportunities to feed and support their communities this holiday season with ‘Food for Fines’ and ‘Pay It Forward.’ The first opportunity is through the Library’s second annual “Food for Fines” program that allows library card holders to clear $1 from their Yolo County Library overdue fines for each food item donated at the circulation desk of any Yolo County Library location. The program runs November 28 through December 31 and there is no limit to the number of donations or reduction in fines cardholders can receive. Library card holders are welcome to donate even if they do not have any overdue fines. In Yolo County, one in six people do not know where their next meal will come from, therefore, these donations will help to feed those in need this winter. Donated items will be given to the Yolo Food Bank. Suggested donations include the following: •Canned tuna or meats •Canned fruits and vegetables •Canned or dry beans or soup •Canned or boxed meals •Cereal, rice or pasta •Fruit juice or shelf-stable milk •Peanut butter The Yolo Food Bank recommends nutritional options such as 100% fruit juices, low-sodium soups and whole grains. The Food Bank will not accept expired items, rusty or unlabeled cans, non-commercial items, alcoholic beverages or

wood, Sonora, Haverhill, Meadow, Webster, Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. On Thursday, Dec. 8, Santa will appear Southport South West, on the following streets: Independence, Lagoon, Meadowlark, Starling, Sandpiper, Pheasant Hollow, Duet, Constitution, Summerfield, Jacquelyn, Janet, Betty, Shirley, Leslie, Diane, Brenda, Kathy, Nancy, Violet,

mixes, food packaged in glass, or perishable, open, used or homemade items. The second opportunity is through the Library’s ‘Pay It Forward’ program that allows customers to help library card holders pay off their overdue fines. Customers are welcome to donate and write a message on a star-shaped note that will be posted on a board behind the circulation desk. Individuals without available funds to pay their overdue fines, who may be prevented from borrowing items at the library as a result, can then redeem these Pay It Forward stars to lower their fines. Customers can contribute as little as the change in their pocket and as much as their heart desires to make a difference through this community helping-hand program. “We hope to support and continue the community spirit of giving,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “By donating to a program, we will help feed families and support residents in Yolo County that are in need or may not have enough resources or funds.” The Yolo County Library supports communities and residents of Yolo County by providing a variety of programs and services that encourage lifelong learning, personal and workforce development and community engagement. For more information about either Yolo County Library program, visit: www.yolocountylibrary.org or connect with the Yolo County Library on Facebook at: www. facebook.com/yolocountylibrary.org.

Resurrecting West Sacramento Girls Softball By Michele Townsend

Baseball season may be over for 2016, but that doesn’t mean that the work has stopped. Participation in the West Sacramento Girls Softball League has been dwindeling for the last few years, but this year the league officials are hoping to resurrect the league and bring it back to the organized and popular league that it once was. WSGS is a non-profit organization where girls between the ages 4 - 16 are taught, and play fast pitch softball. They hold membership in USA Softball and Norcal Girls Softball, and are governed by Greater Sacramento Softball Association. The new board of directors consist of the follow; President - Sabrina Ramos, Vice President - Angelo Vasquez, Treasurer - Jessica Ramirez, Membership Cooridinator - Nicole Huizar, Equipment Coordinator - Ryan Rosales, Secretary - Meg Redmond,Umpire in Chief - Allen Pierson, Fundraising Coordinator - Alez Silva and Snack Bar Coordinator - Sofia Savala. If you’ve been involved with WSGS in the past, you will notice some new policies and procedures. This new board is starting from scratch, going step by step, and rebuilding the structure of the league, and are in need of volunteers, donors, and sponsors. If at any time you have questions about the structure of the league or its dealings, you are encouraged and welcome to go to a board member for assistance. All league records and financial reports are available to the public upon request. Softball is great way to get your family outside to have some fun and develop a strong

family support. It allows the girls to learn teamwork, how to follow instructions, develop coordination, make friends and help them stay healthy by staying active. Registration costs $150 for the first child, $100 for each sibling. In addition, there is a $50 volunteer deposit that will be returned to you once the manditory four hours of volunteer time has been completed by the family. These four hours will be an accumulation of time and effort. They do not have to be completed all at once, and they may be completed by different members of the family. There are two ways to register your daughters to play softball in the 2017 season. You can go online at www.

westsacgirlssoftball.com to reg ister, and the

deadline for online registration is Jan. 13, 2017. There will also be walk-in registration times planned and available. Currently, they are scheduled for Dec. 6, 2016 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Mountain Mike’s Pizza on Harbor Boulevard, and Jan. 21, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Alyce Norman Softball Fields (where the games will also be played) on the corner of Todhunter Avenue and Anna Street. In addition to the registration fee, you will need to bring the player’s birth certificate and a current proof of address with the parent or guardian’s name on it, such as a driver’s licence or current utility bill, etcetera. The age brackets are; 6U - 4 to 6 year olds, 8U - 7 to 8 year olds, and 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U - 10 to 16 year olds. A “skills clinic” day will be held on Jan. 29, 2017. The clinic location will be posted on

the website once it is confirmed. Draft Day will Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m., and you will be notified of team placement starting the next day. Practices will begin Feb. 13. Your coach or team mom will notify you as to when and where. Opening Day is March 18, 2017. COACHES AND UMPIRES ARE NEEDED! You DO NOT have to have experience to do this! Free skills and training clinics will be held to teach you what to do. Background checks will be done on all managers and coaches. There will be several opportunities to help WSGS. Now through Dec. 5, there is Jamba Juice fundraiser. A $10 card allows buy six, get one free. Other fundraising opportunities will be available, and details will be found on the website. If you are interested in donating, you can also do that through the website. Team sponsors are needed. WSGS would like for your sponsorship to be beneficial to the league as well as the sposor. Therefore, there will be a break-

down of levels of sponsorship available to you, should you be intrested in sponsoring. Even if you do not have a child playing in the league, softball is a great game to watch. These girls will amaze you at the skills that they develop. There is always fun, excitement and laughter. Please remember that all coaching and board positions are volunteer. Nobody gets paid, and these people put in a lot of time to pull this league together and keep it running. (Just another reason that volunteers are always needed and welcome.) The umpires are trained, however their view of the plays the pitches will be dif-

ferent than yours. Remember they are ON the field. They may make calls for rules due to rules you are unaware of, and they can only call what they can see. If you are a spectator, and disagree with their calls or have questions about a call, please do not disrupt

the game. You may ask your coach when it’s convenient for them. Energy and excitment levels get very high, but please be respectful at all times. A good rule to live by while watching the games is that: “The coach’s coach, the players play, and the spectators cheer”!

West Sacramento Little League announces sponsorship opportunities West Sacramento Little League has been serving the youth of the community since 953. It’s a non-profit organization operated completely by volunteers. While it is often said that baseball is declining in popularity among our nation’s youth, that is certainly not the case here in West Sacramento. The number of children playing inn the league has grown steadily in recent years and with more homes being built inn our city, the league is actively planning for an even greater number of little leaguers in the near future. However, to do this important work, the league needs your help serving its 750-plus (up from 550 since 2014) youth members ages 4 to 17 years of age. Every year the cost of operating a league league program rises. Unlike some other sports. The cost of baseball equipment and facilities is substantial. Many families in the community can’t afford the registration fee for their children. Of course these are the very children that we need to encourage to play. West Sacramento Little League doesn’t want to discourage these young people from participating. That’s why we are asking for your help. If you have been a sponsor., they are urging you for your support again this upcoming 2017 season. It is a very worthwhile way to contribute to the youth of our community. There are three options to contribute: A: Banner, B:

A Message from the Superintendent Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of the Washington Unified School District, We know that the results of the recent presidential election have been reason for concern among many of our students and families stirring up feelings of anxiety and even questioning what kind of impact this will have in their lives and at home. While our nation’s leadership is in the middle of transition, it is imperative that we continue to work together as a community to provide the stability our children need to be successful. Our great schools and community is made of people from different backgrounds, cultures, languages, and religions. We embrace this rich diversity and accept the responsibility of ensuring that our schools and classrooms continue to be safe places where ALL students can remain focused on a successful future. Our schools are the cornerstone of our community. We must continue to be kind and treat all people with dignity and respect, not allowing the results of this election to dictate our behavior in the classroom or in the community. The District has always been and will continue to remain focused on maintaining safe and inclusive schools for our students to thrive in. The Washington Unified School District is fully committed to supporting our students with any reservations or concerns for their future. Each school has a support system and staff in place to help our students with any anxiety or fear. Each school is staffed with a part-time Social Worker and Outreach Specialist in addition to our teachers, campus safety monitors, support staff and administration. Please talk to your children about the safety and support staff available at school. Our employees stand ready to support and help! If your child is encountering any form of discriminatory behavior or bullying, we encourage you to report the incident to your teacher and school principal. Any acts of bullying or discrimination will not be tolerated and will be addressed accordingly. We must work together on behalf of the children of West Sacramento to demonstrate true respect and dignity to one another. Together, we will persevere through this transition in our nation and ensure that our students feel safe, welcomed, and respected at school. Sincerely yours, Linda C. Luna Superintendent Washington Unified School District

Statement Of Trustee Norma Alcala Concerning Children Crying In WUSD Schools For the last four years since June 2014, children (undocumented and US citizens with undocumented parents) in the Washington Unified School District have been protected by President Obama’s Executive Order, DACA, which Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals, and DAPA which protects their parents. Tuesday that protection vanished. Donald Trump has promised to revoke both Executive Orders on Day One. He has promised to block funding for the many California Sanctuary cities that came into existence after the arrest of a par-

ent selling tamales at Walmart here in Sacramento. Since Tuesday, children have been crying in our schools, uncertain about their future and the future of their families. Their fears are very real and warranted. Will US citizen children be left behind with relatives in the United States while their parents are deported? Will they themselves be deported to a foreign land whose culture and language they do not know. As a school district we have the problems created by these events, but lack the authority to legislate solutions. However that does not

mean that we are powerless. We are elected representatives in a nation where 78% of the citizens favor a path to citizenship for these children. We represent these citizens, and we owe them a duty to reflect their wishes. We must lead the defense of these children and tell Mr. Trump that our schools will not be emptied on our watch, and that he may not tear apart the families in the WUSD. We must be the leaders that our constituents elected us to be. We must show the courage and fortitude necessary to fight in defense of our children and our neighbors.
