In Memoriam The 2019 Newport Show is dedicated to three original supporters who left us this past year. Original, in that all three helped make and shape the Show and because each was a person of unique and admirable character.
Hope Powel Alexander
Among Hope’s many services to this community was a long term on the Board of Directors of the Newport Historical Society, where she also served as an officer. At the end of 2006, when Anne Hamilton approached this Board with the idea of creating a high-end antiques show as an annual event, Hope was one of the few who was both fearless and decisive: “We should do this.” And, she prevailed. 4
7/8/19 11:16 AM
In Memoriam Marion Oates Charles Known as a witty and celebrated Washington, DC hostess, Oatsie was also an exemplar of a generation of Newport’s unconventional grande dames. Glorious until the end, she was Honorary Co-Chair of this Show since the beginning, and a striking presence at the Gala each year.
James J. Coleman, Jr.
005_NEW19.indd 5
Described by his family as a life-long “collector of ideas, experiences and friends,” Jimmy was also a devoted patron of the arts, and a gentle and lovely man. He and his wife Minnie were Founders every year of the Show.

From the Inside Out a Gardener’s Journey to Elegant Interiors with Marshall Watson Saturday, July 27, 2019 10am Lecture Room Showing lustrous photos of his interiors as well as the gardens that accompany them, Marshall Watson will illustrate the dynamic possibilities of a fortified symbiosis between interiors, architecture, and the natural world. Seen through the lens of a passionate gardener, the lessons shared sum up “The Art of Elegance.” Marshall Watson’s robust awareness of periods and styles enables him the flexibility to immerse himself in a range of projects. Though richly layered and often romantic and elegant, his work always showcases a touch of the unexpected and is noted for its “calm and lightness of being.” His work is frequently featured in many publications, notably Architectural Digest, Veranda, House Beautiful, Luxe, House and Garden, Traditional Homes, Hamptons Cottages and Gardens and the New York Times. He has also been featured in New York Spaces, Metropolitan Home, The Chicago Tribune, as well as being a regular design columnist for the Southampton Press. His book “The Art of Elegance” (Rizzoli 2017) is available for purchase at The Show.

Thank You The Newport Show has an established reputation for luxury and style. As you wander amongst the dealers’ booths, you’ll notice that some feature antiques while others present mid-century modern or contemporary pieces. Yet the Show has one common element: everything available is exquisite. Each year The Newport Show grows more expansive and your continued participation makes us so thankful! Our 13th annual event this year is no exception.
We share our deep gratitude with many individuals behind the scenes who make this wonderful weekend possible. Thank you to our Show Chair Anne Hamilton who is at the core of The Newport Show and brings endless support. Additionally, we extend our thanks to Show Manager Diana Bittel, along with our many Founding supporters and Committee members.
