Setting Our Sights

On NOMINATIONS

It’s hard to believe that the award season is already upon us. Before too long there will be the American Music Awards, Grammy Award activity and just before all of that we should have the announcements for our New Music Awards. This is the time that we get to honor the very best artists and bands that graced the charts over this past year. We will be looking at the top movers and shakers in the field of Top40, Country, AC and College radio. The year started out with a trickle of new music and that all soon changed to quite an avalanche of solid songs from new emerging artists as well as the established ones. Now we try to sort all of this through on nominations process. In this issue you will find some of the artists that did well in 2012. Many of them are still moving up our charts and any of them can be considered. As much as we do our research there are other elements that can contribute to a nomination. Over the next few weeks we will also be talking to radio about how artists impacted radio in certain markets. If you think this gives an advantage to the majors, think again. Many of our reporting stations, program and music directors, actually favor the independent music artist. A good deal of these stations and programmers have been playing and reporting new artists all year long. You can now count on them as being in your corner and right when you need them the most. As in year’s past we will not only be looking at artists and bands but will also be reviewing the very support system that helps to make records happen. We will honor many of those radio stations, music and program directors that actually play a part in helping to launch our artists “on the charts”. It also gives the NMW family a chance to pay a bit of tribute to radio promotion people and publicists alike. Many of these unsung heroes are a pivotal part on how records take off in the first place. Make no mistake about it, you have to make a great record, but without the support of a good promotion and publicity team behind you, little can happen and that’s pretty much a proven fact. It’s always been about a “team effort” and generally the act that has the best team behind them finds success. New Music Weekly also provides the opportunity for artists and bands to help themselves in achieving a New Music Award. Once the nominations are listed and they will be posted on our website for the world to see, the fun really begins. You can then rally all of your fans and friends to vote. That has a major impact on the final outcome and with this being such a tight up and coming race, it may come down to a few final votes. Nominees will appear in a full page ad in our next few issues of the printed magazine and there will be plenty of press regarding this event as well. The artists and bands that are the most motivated can go to work soon and create their own campaign push. In the next few weeks many of you will be receiving a copy of our Future hits volume #42 CD sampler. This is one of our major opportunities to service great new music to “all of radio”. All of the artists will also be serviced digitally through Airplay Access as well. In addition to great new music from new emerging artists, there will also be some new songs just in time for your holiday programming. We encourage all of our music and program directors to carefully review all of the songs from this Future Hits compilation. We have never had such an outpouring of response and had to choose from over 400 submissions this time out. The music is all pretty amazing and it’s on the way to you in just a few weeks. Our New Music Awards, Future Hits, STS tracking and this printed magazine are just a few of the “tools of the trade” NMW offers to help artists and bands. In this issue you will also find some valuable information from station prep to invaluable chart information.

It all started when she was a humble yet feisty runner-up on Nashville Star in 2003, standing out as the most independent and least likely of all reality-show contestants. Sony Nashville quickly signed her with the understanding that, even though she was still a teen, she had the moxie and know-how to write many of her own songs and pick her own team. Now fast forward to three platinum prior albums, Miranda Lambert’s accolades could fill a whole set of trunks. She is truly country’s reigning female vocalist of the year, as bestowed by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. She’s won the prized album of the year trophy from both organizations, as well – from the ACMs for her second record, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and from the CMAs and ACMs for her third, Revolution. She received the top country female vocal performance honor at the most recent Grammy Awards for “The House That Built Me.” And, lest all her honorifics be so high-minded, she’s been named one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People and one of Maxim’s Hottest Women of Country. Frequent flyers can hardly rack up more awards points than that. So when “Baggage Claim” was released to country radio stations in August, Lambert realized she was something she’d never expected to become: an automatic add. She’s thrilled with her own radio success because, prior to Revolution, she’d never even had a top 5 single. Two years ago, as that make-or-break effort was prepared for takeoff, you didn’t have to listen far to hear whispers that maybe those same cutting-edge qualities that made her an award-show queen and press darling would be the kiss of death when the commercial rubber hit the road. But in 2010, she finally earned the triple crown – love from industry blogs, critics, and radio – when she bagged her first three No. 1 singles with “White Liar”, “The House That Built Me” and “Heart Like Mine.” Actually this is all just the start for the amazing Miranda Lambert. 3

Kanye West is back at the Top40 format and is making more noise and trouble. This “bad boy” of radio is getting raves for his single “Clique” (DefJam/IDJMG). Love him or not he seems to have the pulse of what is going on at radio and with the Kardashian family too. Nicki Minaj the current “bad girl” of radio is also on a roll as of late. She’s one of the “most played” artists at Top40 and she keeps the spins and increases going strong as her new single “Va Va Voom” (Universal Republic) races up the charts. A duet with the both of them would make for quite the event. Karmin is a most interesting act. I got a chance to witness them first hand “live” and it was quite an impressive affair. Their current single entitled “Hello” (Epic/Sony) is “on fire” and for good reason. Believe me when I tell you that you have not heard the last from Karmin. Rihanna continues to be the darling of Top40 regardless of what you have heard lately. She lets us know just why that is from her current “Diamonds” (IDJMG) single that is “oh so good”. Ne Yo is one super talented vocalist. He’s had his share of personal problems but that has not stopped him from making some great music. His latest offering in “Let Me Love You” (IDJMG) once again displays the genius that is Ne Yo. Kesha is back on pop radio and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing but why not. “Die Young” (RCA/RLG) is her latest inspirational tune and it tells a story that every boy and girl should hear. We’ll see how it all plays out for here in the weeks to come. Enrique Iglesias just can’t seem to get enough of duets with other artists. This time out he’s teamed up with the talented Sammy Adams and the result is once again a “hit-bound” affair. The single is called “Finally Found You” (Republic) and many of our music and program directors can’t seem to get enough of this song. What’s up with that? Hedley has been making quite the impression at the format. The single “Kiss You Inside Out” (Universal/UMG) is quite the title and the calls for this one at radio have really been “out of this world”. We’ve also been getting stellar reports regarding the latest release from our good pal Bruno Mars. He’s been getting rave reviews for the current track entitled “Locked Out Of Heaven” (Atlantic/WEA) and for very good reason. If you’re not on this one you need to give it a few spins and see what the fuss is all about. Outasight is setting a strong pace as the radio race is in full force. The single that is causing such a stir is “Now Or Never” (WB/WEA) and make sure you throw this one into the mix. Adele continues to amaze radio listeners here and all over the world. Her latest gem is “Skyfall” (Sony) and she displays just why she has become the best female vocalist of all time. Newcomer Greg Merritt has quite a lot to be proud of these days. His debut single “Trying To Get Through” (Azure Forrest) spent a few weeks on top of our “most added” chart and now is moving up many of our charts in record time. Jayson Bendera continues to build his profile at the format. It’s all due to is strong “Rebel Angel” (Ammbercy) that has been a winner from the first week out. Paper Route continues to deliver good things to our door step with the new “You And I” (Universal Motown) single. Maroon 5 have a good thing going and make no mistake about that. “One More Night” (Octone/A&M) is the one that everybody is raving about. Script has teamed up with Will I Am for a new hit. “Hall Of Fame” (Epic/Sony) is a solid gem that deserves your immediate attention. Matt Backer has teamed up with Julian Lennon and that has worked out well for both. “All That You’ve Wanted” (Right) is the gem that is making it all happen for them. Tommy Roe has had an amazing chart story as his “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle) continues to impress everybody. Del Robbins is really making some great impressions at Top40. The track “Where Did The Love Go” (Fame & Fortune) is really building quite the story at radio. “Night Train” (Caper) is the latest from young recording artist Emil and what a gem this song is. Marsha Jewell has had a solid run with “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) just as her new song “Ragged Angel” gets ready to take flight. Steve Northeast continues to impress the world with his “Sand and Stone” (Tidal) single. I will have more about the best hits from the Top40 world next time right here, I promise.

TOP40 MOST ADDED 1 Pitbull w/TJR - Don’t Stop The Party (Mr 305/Polo Grounds Music/RCA) 2 Travis - My Shame (Tate Music Group) 3 Emil - Night Train (Caper) 3 4 Kelly Clarkson - Catch My Breath (RCA/RLG) 5 Enrique Iglesias w/Sammy Adams - Finally Found You (Republic) 6 Justin Bieber w/Big Sean - As Long As You Love Me (IDJMG) 7 Phillip Phillips - Home (19/Interscope) 8 Fun - Some Nights (Fueled By Ramen) 9 Flo Rida - I Cry (Poe Boy/Atlantic) 10 Pink - Try (RCA/RLG) 11 Swedish House Mafia - Don’t You Worry Child (Astralwerks/Virgin) 12 Hunter Hayes - Wanted (WB/WEA) 13 Eric Dill - War With The Wolves (Vigil) 14 Justin Bieber w/Nicki Minaj - Beauty And A Beat (IDJMG) 15 Ludacris w/Usher And David Guetta - Rest Of My Life (IDJMG)

Jason Mraz continues to be one of AC radio’s best and biggest artist. He continues to build his good musical fortune with the release of “93 Million Miles” (Atlantic/WEA) that has to be one of his best songs to date. The Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen single entitled “Good Time” (Universal Republic) continues to build power all over the format. Our music and programmers are all over this one “big time”. Carrie Underwood is proving to be more than just a Country artist. She’s taking on the format with her single “Blown Away” (Arista/ RLG) and is receiving much success for her efforts. I really love the new single from American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. The track “Catch My Breath” (RCA/RLG) adds another notch in a career that has been filled with smart and solid hit records. Lifehouse has become one of the formats premiere bands. Every single they release is the perfect sound for AC radio and that continues as their latest entry “Between The Raindrops” (Interscope) breaks some rather solid ground. The band Of Monsters And Men are creating quite the buzz at radio here in the USA. The single “Little Talks” (Universal Republic) is a real powerhouse and look for this act to become the “real deal” in the months to come. It’s also great to see that recent American Idol winner Phillip Phillips has moved past some of his health issues to carve out a successful recording career. His single entitled “Home” (19/Interscope) is being well received all over radio and it appears that he’s off to a stellar start in his quest to becoming a credible new recording artist. Paul Casey is name that you may not be familiar with but that’s all about to change. This amazing guitarist/songwriter is making quite the impression at radio and it’s all due to his debut single “Frontlines” (Dabet Music) that is nothing short of brilliant. Also making waves at radio is recording artist Del Robbins. His new single “Where Did The Love Go” (Fame & Fortune) ranked at the top of our “most added” chart and is now moving full speed ahead up the AC40 charts. Del is a solid talent and there will be some amazing songs coming from him in the near future. Please remember that you heard about Del Robbins and Paul Casey first, right here on the pages of New Music Weekly magazine. Matt Backer has teamed up with Julian Lennon for a real gem of a single. “All That You’ve Wanted” (Right Time) is a solid duet that has many of our radio programmers raving. Watch for some very big weeks ahead for this red hot duo. Bruno Mars has a real winner on his hands once again. “Locked Out Of Heaven” (Atlantic/WEA) is a perfect song for the format and this one could go “all the way”. Adele continues to be one of the finest artists to come along to this format in quite some time. She displays it all once again in the new single entitled “Skyfall” (Sony). The new act Imagine Dragons has come on the scene to much attention. “It’s Time” (Interscope) is their debut offering and it’s quite the single. Tommy Roe has had a stellar run at the format. His “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle) recently hit #1 on our AC40 Indie chart. It’s been great to have Tommy back on the charts where he belongs. Recording artist Greg Merritt is making quite the impression at the format. His debut single “Trying to Get Through “ (Azure Forrest) is the perfect single for the AC format and make no mistake about that. Just ask any of the many reporting stations that are spinning this song “out of control”. Aerosmith are back at the format and that’s always a good thing. “What Could Have Been Love” (Columbia/Sony) is their latest and there is a real buzz gong for this one. The band Royalush is “one fire” with their new red hot single “American Cliché” (High School). Look out for this bad boy. Young and talented Emil is back at radio with a super-hot gem. “Night Train” (Caper) is his latest and it tops our AC40 “most added” for good reason. Taylor Swift is red hot with her “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (Big Machine/Universal). Ellie Goulding can do no wrong with “Anything Could Happen” (Cherrytree/Interscope). I’ll have more of the greatest hits at AC radio next time right here in this column.

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life. Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again.

MUSIC BIZ Eminem Looks To Have 2013 All Sewn Up

Soundgarden to reveal ‘King Animal’

Will Smith Raps At Gabrielle Union’s Birthday

Forget tipping your hat ‘ this week the hat is the tip as Eminem effectively announces 2013 as the year for his next album release by having it sewn into a commemorative baseball cap, even before it’s happened.First, there was this announcement from his official Facebook page here. For a limited time only in honour of the big games and the hometown team’s return to The D, we are pleased to offer the Eminem Baseball Tribute Hat in both home and away colours. Side panel is dedicated to the landmark Eminem solo albums. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Marshall Mathers Foundation. Get them here. It’s only when you look closely at the side panel of the pictured hat that you notice two things. The first hint, for dedicated fans, is that there are 8 years on the hat, not the 7 you’d expect (for his 7 solo albums, as currently released). Then you notice that the last one is 2013.It took only a couple of minutes and dozens of comments in response to the post before someone finally seemed to notice the 2013 addition. Rumours have been around for months, suggesting that the rapper was back in the studio and the likelihood of Dr. Dre being involved, but this is the strongest indication yet that a new album is in the works.Should an album not appear, of course, the hat will no doubt become an interesting collector’s item.

Exactly 18 years since they became the first band ever to play at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Soundgarden are to return to the historic venue for an intimate live show on November 9th. In a once in a lifetime chance to see the iconic rock titans perform in a venue of this size, their set will also include the first ever UK performances of songs from their highly anticipated new album. On November 12th Soundgarden are set to release ‘King Animal’, their first studio album in over 15 years. Produced with longtime Soundgarden friend and producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Pearl Jam) and recorded at Studio X in Seattle, ‘King Animal’ follows the musical evolution of one of the world’s most groundbreaking bands and is among the most eagerly awaited records of 2012. As one of the forefathers of the legendary Seattle alternative rock scene in the 90s, Soundgarden, along with their contemporaries, pioneered a new musical movement which became a global phenomenon, undoubtably leaving a lasting impact on wider popular culture. Following two GRAMMY ® award wins, seven overall nominations and over 21 million records sold worldwide, in 2010 the band announced a new beginning. They released their first retrospective album, ‘Telephantasm’, followed by their first live album, ‘Live on I-5’ before penning the end title song, ‘Live to Rise’, for the feature film The Avengers. This summer they returned to UK soil to headline Hard Rock Calling and perform at Download Festival.

Will Smith treated Gabrielle Union to an impromptu concert at her 40th birthday bash. The Bring it On actress celebrated turning the landmark year with a star-studded party in Miami, Florida on Saturday night. A video posted to YouTube on Sunday shows Will taking the stage alongside Doug E. Fresh. The Welcome to Miami hitmaker is seen grabbing the microphone for a freestyle rap while Gabrielle laughs in the background. The rappers then perform a remix of Will’s 1991 hit Summertime and the theme song from his 1990s American television sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The five-minute clip shows Gabrielle walking to the stage to give the pair a hug. Doug E. Fresh goes on to perform another track with fellow rapper Lil’ Vicious. Gabrielle will turn 40 on Monday. The actress took to Twitter to gush about her wild night out. ‘I’’m sittin here thinkin about last night & I’’m just cheesin & shakin my head. Unreal & epic! Big S/O (shout out) 2 everyone who was a witness,’ she wrote.

Robbie Williams Gives Lap Dance

Robbie Williams gave Louis Walsh a lap dance in front of millions of television viewers on Sunday night. The 38-year-old singer was performing his new single, Candy, on Britain’s The X Factor. The performance took a racy turn when Robbie made his way to the judges’ panel and straddled Irish entertainment manager Louis. Wearing a fitted purple turtleneck, black vest and slacks, the singer shocked fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger, Tulisa Contostavlos and Gary Barlow. As Louis wiped the sweat off his brow, presenter Dermot O’Leary took aim at the star ‘ who just last month was given a lap dance on air by a Britney Spears impersonator. “Louis, that’’s your second lap dance of the series!” Dermot joked. Kylie Minogue is happy to admit she will “never sound” like Christina Aguilera. The Australian singer is celebrating 25 years in the music industry this year. She is proud of all she

has achieved and loves her voice ‘ even if she can’t match the vocal gymnastics of other successful musicians. “I will never sound like Christina Aguilera, but that’s OK. I have pipes!” she laughed to Closer magazine. The 44-year-old star is famed for her extravagant stage shows, which usually include many costume changes. She has performed in corsets by Dolce & Gabbana in the past and in heavy headdresses and says people should be impressed by how easy she makes it look. “And you think strutting around on stage in seven-inch heels and a dress I can barely balance in while walking over five semi-clad men is easy? Think again!” she laughed. Kylie has notched up over 68 million record sales worldwide during her career and has won BRIT and Grammy Awards.

Carlos Santana Corrects Justin Bieber And Lady Gaga Quote

Carlos Santana has taken to Facebook to correct a quote that suggests he has claims he would never work Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Santana is currently in India for the very first time and says the Indian media misquoted him. Indian new source dnaindia.com published this quote attributed to Carlos Santana: ‘I believe that collaborations should only happen between two people who complement each other. I cannot go ahead and collaborate with Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. I have always maintained that. Music is not a competition. It is harmony. It is not Olympics where you have to outdo each other.’ In his correction, Santana says he meant the complete opposite. ‘I like to crystallize and correct the press in New Delhi. My accurate statement was ‘By the grace of GOD, it is not impossible to collaborate (share music) with Mr. Andrea Bocelli, Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. It’s a matter of the right song and some willingness. I hold my sister and two brothers in the same light and I am grateful that nothing is out of the realm of possibility’. Peace’.

MUSIC BIZ ‘Too Many People’, Prince was band leader to well over a dozen musicians, including an 11 piece horn section. Sayers has a capacity of around 200 people, making for an intimate audience for the 90 minute set that wrapped up around 2am. Then it was time for him to play his own latest single, Rock and Roll Love Affair, which, despite entering the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart at #22 on radio airplay alone earlier this month in the US, is currently scheduled for a Europe-only release on digital, CD and vinyl by Swiss label Purple Music on November 16.

Katy Perry ‘Can’t Deny Mayer Chemistry’

Katy Perry has “undeniable” chemistry with John Mayer, it has been revealed. The pop singer has had an on-off relationship with Hollywood lothario John since they got together earlier this year. It has been reported that the pair are currently very much ‘on’ after their recent public appearance in New York for John’s 35th birthday bash. “Though they’ve had their ups and downs, Katy and John are smitten with each other,” a source told British magazine Grazia. “They’ve got undeniable chemistry.” Katy has a history of being able to tame some of the biggest celebrity players. The star managed to convert womaniser Russell Brand into a dedicated husband for 14 months while they were married. Sources have revealed Katy succeeded in pinning down John by jokingly playing him at his own game. “Katy wanted to show John that she won’t stand for any of his nonsense. She even bought him a box of Godiva chocolates, just so he’d know what it was like to be romanced by a girl,” the source continued. “John thought it was really funny.”

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel became husband and wife earlier this month but had remained coy about their wedding plans since getting engaged late last year. They tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Italy surrounded by family and friends which was organised with military precision. And although The A-Team star had said leading up to the wedding that she had been too busy to get anything done, the couple

now tells People magazine that they started planning as soon as Justin put a ring on it. ‘Justin told me that since the day he proposed on top of a mountain in Big Sky Montana, the two of them have been planning this incredible wedding,’ the magazine’s senior writer Jennifer Garcia revealed. ‘The most important thing to them, they wanted it to be personal.’ There were lots of personal touches on the big day including Jessica using pearls from her grandmother’s wedding day tiara to incorporate in her own veil. The Sexy Back singer issued a public apology this week for the ‘distasteful’ wedding video mocking homeless people that surfaced on the internet soon after his nuptials.

Lil Wayne Recuperating At Mother’s House

Lil Wayne may be a bad boy rapper but he still just wants to be with his mother when he’s ill. The musician suffered ‘seizure-like’ symptoms this week while mid-flight and has reportedly now been told by his doctors that she should refrain from air travel for a while. The 30year-old rapper, real name Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., was hospitalised in Texas following the first seizure and in Louisiana after the second health scare. His rep confirmed that Wayne was suffering from a migraine and severe dehydration. TMZ reports that he had planned to leave Los Angeles on Friday but then rescheduled, and cancelled his flight plans again on Saturday. The insider added that Wayne is not yet sure when he will leave town but has his loved ones around him at his mother’s house and has apparently been in very good spirits. Wayne also missed a court date on Friday in his ongoing case against Quincy Jones III who he is suing over a documentary made about him. The rapper’s attorneys will let the judge know his status on Monday.

Madonna’s Body Secrets Revealed

Madonna may be 54-years-old but the singer continues to impress fans with how she stays so lean. The mother-of-four has a busy schedule with her career and raising a family. But her personal trainer Nicole Winhoffer says the Material Girl is extremely dedicated and that’s how she gets and maintains such great results. ‘It’s hard work, but make time and put in 110 percent and you will see results,’ Nicole told Us for anyone wanting to get the pop star’s body. ‘It’s not what you are doing but how you are doing it. Green Day Cancel More Dates

Green Day have cancelled further shows due to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s stint in rehab. The band ‘ which consists of Billie Joe, bassist Mike Dirnt, drummer Tré Cool and guitarist Jason White ‘ have been on a hiatus since Billie Joe’s onstage outburst in Las Vegas last month. It has now been announced that all commitments until March 2013 are on hold, while the band’s frontman seeks help for substance abuse. “Obviously the timing for this isn’t ideal, but Billie Joe’s wellbeing is our main concern,” Mike explained in a statement. “We are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well and we want to thank you all for the outpouring of support.” In September, Billie Joe smashed his guitar during a foul-mouthed rant onstage. Prior to Billy Joe’s public breakdown, the band had been promoting three new albums, with the third instalment due out in January 2013. The band have now brought the release date forward to December 2012, to make up for the disappointment of cancelled shows. “We feel bad we have to delay our tour, so to make up for it we want to give our fans the music earlier than we had planned,” Tré NMW - NOVEMBER 9, 2012

Black River Entertainment continues to expand its artist roster by signing fan favorite, Kellie Pickler. “What’s not to love about Kellie?” asks Gordon Kerr, CEO of Black River Entertainment. “She’s real, she adores her fans, she’s rooted in and committed to country music and she’s genuine. How can you ask for more than that?”

said. “If we couldn’t be there to play it for you live, the least we could do was give you the next best thing.”

Spears’ Ex-manager ‘Desperate’ For Lohan

Britney Spears’ ex-manager Sam Lufti is reportedly eager to ‘get his hooks into’ Lindsay Lohan. The pop star’s infamous ex-employee is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Britney and her parents. Sam has sued the family for defamation and breach of contract. Lindsay’s long-time publicist Steve Honig is rumoured to have resigned after spending nearly two years with the troubled actress. Apparently Sam is ready to secure Lindsay as a new client. “Sam has been desperate to get his hooks into Lindsay for a very, very long time,” a source told Radar Online. “He reached out to her after Steve Honig quit last week but she hasn’’t returned his calls or text messages. Lindsay wants absolutely nothing to do with Sam. She doesn’’t trust him and believes he is closely aligned with her estranged father, Michael Lohan.’ Lindsay doesn’t respect Sam. She simply doesn’t believe he’s professional enough to be her manager. “Lindsay says there is no way in hell she would work with Sam,’ the source said. ‘She recognises that Sam doesn’’t know anything about the entertainment business and knows of the hell that Britney went through when Lutfi was acting as her ‘’manager.’’ Lindsay’’s lawyers and agents would never work with Lutfi in any capacity - and quite frankly, the last thing Lindsay wants or needs in her life right now is Sam Lutfi.”

Little Big Town is back at Country radio with quite a winning track. “Tornado” (Capitol) topped our “most added” list last week and now it’s twisting its way up the charts at record velocity. Faith Hill is back and that’s always a nice thing to see at the format. Her new “American Heart” (WB/WEA) is touching the hearts and minds of many of our music and program directors in a very big way. Watch for some big weeks ahead for this gem. We’re also happy to see that Chris Young is keeping his success story strong. Many of our reporters are really loving his new “I Can Take It From There” (RCA/RLG). We’ll see how this all plays out in the coming weeks but so far it has been so very good for Chris. Who’s the luckiest girl in the USA? Why that would have to be Taylor Swift. You can’t get much more media and exposure than her there days and her Big Machine family have got to be all smiles. “Begin Again” (Big Machine/Universal) is yet another Hit single from the little girl that has everything. Josh Turner could use a little of love out there as well. He most certainly is getting some of it all for his “Find Me A Baby” (MCA) track. It’s great to see that Steve Holy is getting some well-deserved attention at radio. His new single entitled ”Hauled Off And Kissed You” (CVR) is fast becoming a real solid favorite among our Country stations and their reporters. We’re thrilled to see that happening for Steve. Toby Keith keeps the fires bright at Country radio. His latest offering in the song “I Love Girls That Drink Beer” (Show Dog/Universal) tells all you need to know. The vocal sensations that we’ve come to know as Gloriana are as hot as ever. They display all of that and more with the single “Can’t Shake You” (Emblem Music Group/WB). Uncle Kracker continues to make friends at Country radio and that’s always a good thing. His new track “Nobody’s Sad On A Saturday Night” (Sugar Hill) is a real gem and look out for this bad boy. Kacey Musgraves is getting plenty of love and respect at the format. “Merry Go Round” (Mercury) is the one that is getting raves from our panel of music and program directors. Expect a big story building for this one. Brad Paisley has a good thing going and that’s for sure. “Southern Comfort Zone” (Arista/RLG) is the latest from Country’s new favorite award show host. Also getting in on some of the action is Tyler Farr. The song “Hello Goodbye” (Columbia Nashville) will make it worth your while. Hunter Hayes also has a plan in action. You can hear what that’s all about in the song “Somebody’s Heartbreak” (Atlantic/WEA) Kenny Chesney is keeping the heat on everybody as his new “El Cerrito Place” (Columbia/Sony) moves ahead of the pack. Trace Adkins is also good to go with “Tough People Do” (Show Dog/Universal). Travis may be a name that you are not quite familiar with but not for long. His debut single entitled “My Shame” (Tate Music Group) is moving at lightning speed on our Country charts and other formats as well. Gary Allan has a big hit on his hands with “Every Storm” (MCA Nashville) and those wild Zac Brown Band boys are on fire with “Goodbye In Her Eyes” (Southern Ground/Atlantic). Amy Rose also has a lot to be proud of as her new single “I Just Want You To Know” (Wild Rose Music) continues to build strong. Our good pal Dierks Bentley is “on the move” with the excellent “Tip It On Back” (Capitol Nashville). Darius Rucker continues to have a good thing going as “True Believers” (Capitol) is becoming a favorite. The Eli Young Band is a beautiful thing with “Say Goodnight” (Republic Nashville). Tommy Row has been getting some raves and spins at Country for his “Devils Soul Pile” (Airebelle) single. Buck McCoy moves to the top of the charts with his smart “I Don’t Know The World Anymore” (Weir Brothers). Marsha Jewell has had a solid run with “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) and watch for a new one soon. I’ll have more on the greatest Country Hits of all time right here next time in this column.

C arrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of “American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into a promotion that is sure to please her fan following. S ony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which was released in May. U sing the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival.

“ Carrie Underwood is always looking for ways to connect with her fans,” said Gary Overton, Sony Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans something special and provide a cool, unique connection between the artist and audience. Sony Music Nashville is excited to watch this fun idea unfold and is eager to partner with Aurasma on other future campaigns.” U pon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010. “ Carrie Underwood is a proven superstar. We are thrilled to partner with Sony Music Nashville to help increase the momentum of her smash album Blown Away,” said Jennifer Rapp, general manager of Aurasma. “By leveraging augmented reality to bridge the physical and virtual worlds, Sony gives the fans something exclusive and special, helping to keep fans connected and Carrie in the spotlight.” T he free Aurasma app runs on iPhone 3GS (and above), iPad2 (and above), and high-powered Android devices. Y esterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! NMW - NOVEMBER 9, 2012

Herrick

Try a ‘New Dance’ There’s an old saying that if at first you don’t succeed, try try again. The members of the rising group Herrick took that old saying to heart, going back and re-cutting parts of their current album “New Dance” several times before arriving at the final result. Lead singer Donna Herrick says it was definitely worth it. “We worked really hard, we actually cut the album four times,” she related to Billboard. “We just kept growing musically, and we just wanted it to be the best it could be for the fans. We didn’t want to cut any corners and say ‘Well, that’s good enough.’ As an artist, it’s never going to be ‘good enough,’ so we kept mutating and changing. The fans have really responded to it, and we’re excited because they have been so excited about it. It just means so much for us to have them come up to us and say that ‘This is such a deep album.’ That’s what we want - and long for - is for someone to tell us that. We spent four years on it. It was a labor of love.”

Bass player Kerry Herrick agrees, saying “We spent a lot of time writing, rewriting, replacing songs, recording tracks almost constantly, changing studios. We finally found the right sound, and the right melodic aspect to go with the lyrics. We didn’t put any boundaries on it, especially when Michael Bonagura (Bailee & The Boys) got involved. He co-produced ten of the cuts, and Buddy Cannon produced four. He has this 70s feel to whatever he’s doing and he’s such a guitar player. He just made it so much fun, and put such a whole new breath of life into the music when he got involved. We’d look up at the clock, and it

“We wanted it to be like a book, where you turn the page and there’s a new chapter,” she stressed. “But, we didn’t want any s because if you don’t like the music, you’re not going to care what we’re talking about. We wanted it to be like a book that you gone through - except one that we made up, ‘Cry Memphis.” There is no bigger advocate for Donna’s prowess as a vocalist than Kerry. “Donna has so much passion,” he says. “She can ing.” You might have noticed that Donna and Kerry share the last name. That’s not a coincidence. The two are married. How do t

“We have boxing matches out in the parking lot,” she says, laughing. “No, we’re very business oriented when it comes to the m since we were little kids, it’s like we grew up with each other. We do know how to push each others’ buttons, though. We’re t

College radio is “alive and well”, especially for this “PreNomination” issue. The time has come to get real serious about your nominations. Spread the word about how you did this year and get what you really deserve for this year’s New Music Awards. We’re also getting set to release Future Hits volume #43 and you are not going to believe how good the new music will be on this sampler. Some of us at New Music Weekly attended a concert at a little place called Rockwell in the Los Angeles area that featured a new artist by the name of Rogelio Douglas Jr. He put on a show that according to our co-editor Larry Weir and our photo editor Masika Swain was “out of this world”. “This artist put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and he left me in tears”, remarked Masika. It was also a “star studded” event with the likes of Tamyra Grey, Wayne Brady and Broadway “Wicked” star Shoshana Bean, all of whom got up on stage and performed with him. Please remember that you heard and read about the amazing Rogelio Douglas Jr. right here first, on the pages of New Music Weekly magazine. New York based Black Wing Halo announces the free download of “Rats” from their debut album, Welcome to the Show. Drawing influences from Tom Waits, Mike Patton and Nine Inch Nails among others, “Rats” highlights the band’s trademark blend of punk and rock music, gritty on bass and heavy on drums. Featured in the movie Locked in a Garage Band, the track serves as an appetizer to the full album produced by Jason Rubal (The Cure, NIN, Dresden Dolls, Killswitch Engage) available now. Black Wing Halo is Josh Weinstein (vocals/guitar), Stephanie Linn (vocals), Doug McGregor (bass) and Justin Hofmann (drums). Birthed from a solo project by Weinstein, Black Wing Halo has metamorphosized into it’s current line-up blending rowdy punk, crunchy electronic, rock n’ roll & 90’s grunge reflecting their ever-expanding love and admiration for noise. The four continue to spread to the masses, having played SXSW, NXNE, and CMJ, as well as sold out shows along the East Coast. Liquid Spins is one of the nation’s newest online music companies specializing in Non-Traditional Music Distribution. The classification of ‘Non-Traditional Music Distribution’ refers to the practice of partnering with established brands who will utilize the spincode™ QR technology, along with other activated-at-time-of-purchase methods, to offer digital music to their customers, in their stores, and on their products. This business model creates new space for Liquid Spins and satisfies the corporate goal of putting more music in more places. At the heart of the company is a basic pay-perdownload business model, which differs greatly from the streaming trends of today’s newest music companies. While the Liquid Spins Music Distribution Network is centered around an online store, customers are driven to their downloads through unique product offerings such as retail t-shirts, concert posters, guitar picks, and temporary tattoos. Yes, Liquid Spins has actually developed a non-traditional product that lets users wear temporary tattoos that, when scanned with a smart phone, displays the user’s theme music for the night. Blaster Records CEO Tom Porter has announced the hiring of in-house radio promotion team to continue the growing needs of the powerhouse indy label. Taking the promotion helm is veteran Gator Michaels as VP of Promotions. Michaels will report directly to President Mike Dennison, effective immediately. “With the challenges faced today in our genre and the fighting for radio airplay, hiring a great team to support our current and future roster is vital,” says Porter. “Mike and I felt this was the perfect time to get our team secured as we approach a busy year ahead. Gator has an outstanding reputation and we are proud to add him into our growing Blaster family.”Record companies are about music and people. Blaster has the best of both! Tom and Mike have put together a fantastic roster and I’m honored to be a part of building this company,” says Michaels. Blaster Records Senior Consultant Skip Bishop adds, “This is a game changing strategic move by Blaster Entertainment. Bringing in Gator Michaels and his entire staff will propel Blaster into the forefront of country radio promotion.” NMW - NOVEMBER 9, 2012
