Vol. 14 Issue 5

From the Editor’s Best Of 2012...SSo Far It won’t be long before we close out 2012 and that’s hard to believe. We’re not quite there yet but it’s that time of year when we take a look at the artists and bands that have achieved the greatest chart success. New Music Weekly will now begin the process in determining which acts will “make the cut” for this year’s nominations for our next New Music Awards. This will be a combination of major and independent artists with a focus on the acts that had exceptional activity on our weekly charts. You still have plenty of time to “make your case” but starting with this issue, we get serious as we begin to look at the artists and bands that had the biggest impact in 2012. We will also begin a dialogue with radio stations, music directors and programmers that will also be a part of this nomination process. NMW is so fortunate to have a stellar and vast group of radio stations. With the formats ranging from Top40, Country, AC, to College we have our work cut out over the next few months. As labels, artists and bands you can also help the cause by keeping the heat on your radio promotion team to get the best chart activity possible in order to find a place for consideration. All you have to do right now is to look at our charts and see the potentials that are out there and it’s a vast list indeed. As financial times continue to be hard and the downsizing in the music industry continues, we have found the music to be abundant and quite strong. In fact, some of the very best music that has been hitting our charts as of late, has come from the independent arena. As the majors continue to struggle and to get a grasp as to what is becoming of our industry, make no mistake about it, our team of artists that are hitting the charts of NMW are “first rate”. The production and talent is better than ever and acts are finally starting to understand that it is important to have a strong team promoting their music. The “team effort” is a very important tool, in making things happen for an artist or band. Recording artists who continue to understand that they can’t do everything themselves, from promotion, publicity to bookings, are the ones that actually make bolder and better moves. This does not mean that you have to be fiscally crazy but you need to be prudent and smart when it comes time to putting that team together. We can see the effect of those that do it well and it is evident in so many ways. Our panel of radio stations also appreciate the ones that come off as true professionals in every way. New Music Weekly is also a springboard to bigger and even stronger arenas. Some of the acts that started on our charts in the early part of this year have now been getting Mediabase and Billboard chart activity. Some can be found on multi charts from FMQB to Indie World or on the Independent Music Network charts, with all of these moves helping to build an artist’s national profile. Getting your name out there in all of these charts makes it a stronger case for the tougher stations to ignore. If everybody out there is playing your music why shouldn’t they? We continue to offer the best “tools of the trade” here at New Music Weekly. In the coming weeks we will begin putting tracks together for our next Future Hits compilation. This very special CD that will be serviced to “all of radio” will also include new and original “holiday songs”. If you are sitting on such an item or you just want to service your new single to music directors, programmers and radio, get in touch with us here at NMW and we’ll include you on the compilation. As for now we will be watching and listening to the very Best of 2012…So Far!

Recording artist Chris Brown made his recording debut in late 2005 with the selftitled album Chris Brown at the age of 16. The album featured the hit single “Run It!”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100, making Brown the first male artist to have his debut single top the chart since Montell Jordan in 1995. The singer, songwriter, actor was born on May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia. Growing up in a small town of roughly 2,000 people, he was a born entertainer. Brown enjoyed singing in his church choir and was inspired by such musical artists as Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. He also showed off his dance prowess by imitating the dance moves of another one of his idols, Usher. He would soon be discovered by Tina Davis, who was working for Def Jam Recordings at the time. “The first thing that hit me was his unique voice,” Davis told Billboard magazine. “I thought ‘This kid is a star.’” Davis eventually became his manager and helped him land a deal with Jive Records, which had developed other young acts such as Britney Spears and ‘N Sync and is home to other hip-hop and R&B stars such as R. Kelly, Usher, and Kanye West. Working with established producers and songwriters, he had a number one hit with “Run It!,” which was co-written by Scott Storch and Sean Garrett. The album brought Brown two Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best R&B Contemporary Album. More album and chart success would follow. His recent history with respect to his relationship with superstar Rihanna is legendary. 3

One of the hottest newcomers at Top40 these days has to be found in recording artist and super talent Karmin. Her new single “Hello” (Epic/Sony) underscores why she is someone who could be a major star in the music industry. Brooke Webb is most certainly “on the move” and shows it in every way. “Said What I Wanted” (Jim Jam Entertainment) is the gem that many of you are raving about. Christina Perri is also a major talent that deserves your immediate attention. “Distance” (Atlantic/WEA) is a stellar track and many of our music and program directors are raving about this gem “big time”. We’ll see how this all plays out in the weeks to come to be sure. Alex Clare is also building one solid career at this format. “Too Close” (Universal Republic) is the jam that is making it all happen and once you hear this song you will know why. Beyonce is back to her old tricks and make no mistake about that. Her latest offering can be found in “Dance For You” (Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia) and this is one of her best singles to date. One Republic stands as one of the best bands out there these days. “Feel Again” (Interscope) is their latest and greatest and this track could go “all the way”. It’s so good to see that American Idol winner Phillip Phillips is back up and running. With his health getting better one day at a time, he can also be proud of his “Home” (19/Interscope) single that is now breaking at radio. He deserves all the good things that can come his way and is one of the “good guys”. Maroon 5 is back just in time for the new season of “The Voice” (NBC). “One More Night” (Octone/A&M) is the single that is getting some major play out there and good for them. It might be time to get back to that Paper Route. Oh, I just realized that this is actually a band and they have a hit single called “You And I” (Universal Motown), who knew? Claes Cem keeps picking up action for the single “40,000 Feet” (Momentum Project). Tom Dobson is also doing his best “Dirty Girl” (PEG) and our stations seem to be loving it. Rihanna is going to stay in denial but that won’t stop her from having a hit single that can be found in the track “Where Have You Been” (DefJam/IDJMG). It’s always great to have Kelly Clarkson on Top40 radio. Her current single called “Dark Side” (RCA/RLG) underscores just how good this girl really is. Taylor Swift appears to be having her biggest hit “ever”. The single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (Big Machine/Universal) is exploding all over multi-formats and her team is “putting the money down” for this one. Owl City has teamed up with Carly Rae Jepsen (and why not) for the single “Good Time” (Universal Republic) that is a real “breakout”. Calvin Harris (hey, doesn’t he have another name) has joined forces with NeYo for the single “Let’s Go” (Ultra) and that appears to be working out well for both of them. Katy Perry is as hot as any girl can be for this summer once again. “Wide Awake” (Capitol). Is the jam that many of you are loving. David Guetta has teamed up with the sweet and lovable Chris Brown. Together they make beautiful music that can be found in the single “I Can Only Imagine” (Capitol). Usher is going through quite a lot this summer. Not only has he been in court over personal family issues he’s also found time to promote a new single and do some shows as well. “Lemme See” (RCA/RLG) is the jam that is working for him and watch for some great weeks ahead on this one. We’re getting some good words on Demi Lovato. Her single “Give Your Heart A Break” (Hollywood) is still a fan and radio favorite. Pitbull keeps rocking with “Back In Time” (Mr 305/Polo Grounds/RCA). Tommy Roe has been having an impressive run with the powerful “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle). Steve Northeast has a new hit on his hands with “Sand And Stone” (Tidal). Greg Wallace has a new smash single in “What if Today” (Riff Ranch). Jimmy White is moving towards the top with “Warm” (828) and radio loves him. Marsha Jewell is also enjoying a solid run as her “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) moves towards the top of the charts. I’ll be back with more regarding the best Top40 Hits of all time right here next time.

Owl City has teamed up with newcomer Carly Rae Jepson for a new AC40 hit single. “Good Time” (Universal Republic) is the track that is getting some serious play out there not only on radio but with many network television appearances from this new duo. The Script has teamed up with Will I Am for a pretty interesting cut. “Hall Of Fame” (Epic/Sony) is the jam that many of you are starting to love out there. John Mayer is off and running at the format with a winner. “Queen of California” (Columbia/Sony) is the single that is pulling in some strong spins and calls at radio. Train has a hit to close out the summer of 2012. “50 Ways To Say Goodbye” (Columbia/Sony) is their latest and watch it continue to build in the weeks to come. Green Day is back with a single that is getting quite a bit of traction. “Oh Love” (WB/WEA) is the track that our music and program directors are all over. It’s great to have No Doubt back at the format. “Settle Down” (Interscope) is the single and I must admit that I’ve been hearing it a lot here in the Los Angeles area and loving it “big time”. Matchbox 20 keeps building believers from our AC40 panel. “She’s So Mean” (Emblem/Atlantic) is the gem that is helping to keep them in the ears of radio fans. Recording artist Alex Clare has got a good thing going, and make no mistake about that. “Too Close” (Universal Republic) is the track that is pulling in calls everywhere it’s being played. Watch for some big moves ahead for this newcomer. Tommy Roe is getting raves for his latest effort. “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle) is putting him back on the top of the charts where he belongs. Please remember that we gave you the heads up on this first right here at New Music Weekly. Those Neon Trees are fast becoming the “talk of the town”. “Everybody Talks” (Mercury) is the single that is making it all happen for them. Katy Perry keeps her streak of hits on the fast track. “Wide Awake” (Capitol) is her latest and this is yet another #1 single from the fabulous Katy. Recording artist Steve Northeast has been on a roll as of late. His single “Sand & Stone” (Tidal) has been “on fire” from the very first week and watch for some big moves from Steve in the coming weeks. Jason Mraz also has a solid track that everybody at the format loves. “I Won’t Give Up” (Atlantic/WEA) is Jason at his very best. Greg Wallace is back at the format with a new hit single. “What If Today” (Riff Ranch) is the track that everybody is raving about. It has ranked at the top of our “most added” list for the past several weeks. Maroon 5 has teamed up with Wiz Khalifa for the single “Payphone” (Octone/A&M) and everybody loves it. Norah Jones is back and we are following the love she’s getting for “Happy Pills” (Blue Note/EMC). Recording artist Jayson Bendera has been on a roll and make no mistake about that. His current hit single “Rebel Angel” (Ammbercy) continues to build at radio by leaps and bounds. Colbie Caillat also continues her run with “Favorite Song” (Universal Republic). She’s one of the best at AC and her following remains stronger than ever. The band we’ve come to know as Fun has been getting some solid play out there in radio-land. “Some Nights” (Fueled By Ramen) is the track that many are really loving. Jimmy White continues to “rule the charts” at the AC40 format. His single “Warm” (828) is actually as “hot as can be”. Singer and songwriter Marsha Jewell has also been building her story all over radio. Her current track “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) is breaking across formats and is also closing in on the top spot here on our AC40 charts. Marsha is set to tour the world soon and we are thrilled for her. I’ll have more for you regarding the greatest artists and hits from the AC40 world right here next time.

ALL ROADS

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life. Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again.

Kelly Osbourne was sick after she accidentally downed a large glass of vodka. The TV star was at the New York Fashion Week party for brand Opening Ceremony when she went to take a drink from her water, but got more than she bargained for. She tweeted: “Picked up what i thought was my water & took the biggest swig of vodka which instantly made me puke what a way to ruin the night (sic)!” The alcoholic drink burned at the 27-year-old’s throat, an experience she compared to the taste of nail polish remover. She added: “My mouth, throat and stomach are on fire Im starting to think i drank poison the closest thing i can compare it to is nail polish remover (sic)!” Kelly’s accidental vodka shooter is the latest unlucky episode to befall her, after a bottle of self tanning solution recently exploded in her suitcase, leaving embarrassing looking stains on her laundry. She admitted: “My self tanner exploded in my suitcase Im 2 embarrassed 2 take them 2 the drycleaners because it looks like I s**t myself #S**tShorts (sic)” Despite having to leave the party early, the ‘Fashion Police’ host was given a gift by Opening Ceremony of three rings; two shaped like eyes and one like a mouth, which she also posted a picture of on twitter.

Miley Cyrus Won’t Quit Because Of Stalker

Miley Cyrus has no plans to move house despite a “crazy” man claiming to be her husband being arrested on her property last Thursday (06.09.12). Miley Cyrus won’t let her stalker ruin her life. The 19-year-old singer is refusing to move home in spite of a terrifying incident last Thursday (06.09.12) when a 40-year-old scissor-wielding man claiming to be her husband tried to enter her £3 million gated mansion in Los Angeles. A source told HollywoodLife. com: “She doesn’t plan on moving from her home and will not allow crazy people ruin her life. “When she is home, she has her own security team that she trusts and is confident they would protect her. “She will not be affected by the incidents that have happened recently at her house. She is relieved that no one was injured and hurt but moving is not an option.” The police were called to Miley’s mansion last week after an eyewitness spotted an intruder jumping over the starlet’s fence and banging on her front door. Jason Luis Rivera was found hiding in the bushes with a pair of scissors and wearing a large pink heart around his neck. He told police: “I am friends with Miley Cyrus. I am. She’s my wife. Me and Miley NMW - SEPTEMBER 14, 2012

At the time, she wrote on her twitter page: “Words can’t explain the essence of her beauty.” Rihanna, 24, was recently pleading for ‘Dolly’ to contact her from beyond the grave. She tweeted: “I wish u were here ... Got so many questions and you always had answers #grangranDOLLY

Jared Followill Forms New Band

Kings of Leon’s Jared Followill formed his new band, Smoke and Jackal, to stop himself going “stir crazy,” during his year off. Kings of Leon’s Jared Followill formed his new band to stop himself going “stir crazy.” The bassist started side project Smoke and Jackal with his friend Nick Brown during his year off from touring with his main group, and they recorded six songs in eight days. He told Rolling Stone magazine: “I knew that I would go a little bit stir-crazy just not doing anything and not having any artistic outlets. “It was super spur-of-the-moment. Nick sings amazing and I sing horribly, so we figured we could just go down [to Nick’s basement] and try it one night.” Nick - who also fronts the band Mona - added: “We made a rule of ‘no pressure. The second: if it’s not fun, we’re leaving. We’ll go to a bar.” The pair watched films and tried to create their own soundtracks and deliberately tried not to sound like either of their normal bands. Jared explained: “All of the songs were kind of a specific sound that our other bands did not go for. We both love our own bands, and we weren’t trying to step on any toes. That would have been weird

for us.” Jared also gave an update on Kings of Leon, saying they are in the planning stages of a follow up to 2010’s ‘Come Around Sundown’. He added: “We’re just trying to have fun with it and just have a relaxed-type thing. “We’re just meeting with producers and stuff. I think we’re going to try and start it this year. We’ll see.”

The Black Keys ‘Start The Ball Rolling’

Akron rockers The Black Keys have hit the studio to start work on their new album, and drop a new video clip. The Black Keys’ El Camino has been

quite the revelation ‘ the mainstream capitalisation on their breakthrough Brothers album ‘ so their next platter is certainly highly anticipated. Now guitarist Dan Auerbach has revealed to Rolling Stone that they’ve already spent a week in the studio in July between tour dates. He said that it wasn’t ‘the most focused studio session’ but they did ‘get some ideas down and started the ball rolling.’ Don’t hold your breath just yet, Black Keys fans. Drummer Pat Carney said ‘We might not finish it until March since we have to tour so much, but we’ll see. After July, we’ll be able to know how long it’ll take.’ So, basically no new album until mid-2013, at least. Noel Gallagher’s Daughter upset About X Factor

Noel Gallagher’s daughter, Anais, is upset he turned down the opportunity to be a judge on ‘The X Factor’. Noel Gallagher’s daughter is upset he didn’t want to be a judge on ‘The X Factor’. The ‘AKA... What A Life!’ singer was approached about a role on the talent search show, and his 12-year-old daughter, Anais, thinks he would have done a better job than current head judge Gary Barlow. Anais - Noel’s daughter with his ex-wife Meg Matthews - told The Sunday Times Magazine: “When he was called up to be a judge on ‘X Factor’ last year, me and my [half] brother couldn’t believe it when he said no. “I was like, ‘Why didn’t you say yes dad?’ I thought he’d be good as a judge. Gary Barlow is good, but dad would have been better.” Former Oasis guitarist Noel - who has two sons, Donovan, four, and Sonny, 23 months with his current wife, Sara MacDonald - told last year how he had been personally called by ‘The X Factor’ mogul Simon Cowell, who offered him the role as head judge, but he couldn’t see how his personality would fit with the show. Noel explained how Simon 21

MUSIC BIZ told him: “We’re rebranding the show and we need an Alpha Male.” After responding he didn’t understand where he would fit in, Noel added: “He said ‘For the whole show’, and I was like ‘No, no’, and he was going ‘No, no, no, it’ll be great’, and I was saying ‘You mean kids round at my house? In my kitchen?” Noel added he couldn’t see himself delivering lines such as: “You know I can only take three into the final, and this is the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. I left Oasis, but that was nothing to compared to this.” Later he said he would have accepted the job, but only if they had offered to pay him a million pounds.

Delightfully written with character, Sterban includes many great, never before told stories of Elvis and The Oak Ridge Boys. Pictured: Lisa Marie Presley & Richard Sterban.

In the competitive Texas/Red Dirt music scene, it’s tough for a new artist to get past 30 on the charts. Jerrod Medulla has defied the odds this. “Stay the Night,” his first single off his new SPEAK EASY album went all the way to # 7. 22

Britney Spears has been engaging in flirtatious banter with ‘charming’ Simon Cowell. The pair are working alongside each other as judges on The X Factor USA. Now Britney and the music mogul have taken to social networking site Twitter to make contact between shows. ‘I spent the day with britney. She really is quite charming (sic),’ Simon wrote. The popstar was quick to send an enthusiastic response to Simon’s flattering message. ‘@SimonCowell Oh now you want to be nice! Hehe. U are quite charming yourself... today was fun ! (sic)’ she cheekily replied. And Simon isn’t the only one lucky enough to enjoy some attention from the .Baby One More Time singer. A promotional video released for the TV show features Britney unwittingly flirting with a handsome hopeful. ‘You have a really nice soothing sound and I wish you could wake me up in the morning,’ the pretty starlet gushes on the clip. Shortly after, she started laughing and explained she was talking about the contestant’s music. The X Factor USA will hit screens in America on September 12.

Akon Files Paternity Papers

Akon has taken steps to ensure he’s “legally recognised” as the father of two boys. The hip-hop star filed paternity documents in court last month to become the legal dad of two children born in 2008 and 2009, according to US website TMZ. A source close to the 39-year-old star insists that “Akon has been a father to the boys since they were born, and this is just a necessary step to make sure he is legally recognised as such.” TMZ reports that Akon has asked the court to grant him joint legal custody of his two sons. Such a decision will allow the singer to be involved in all major aspects of their life and to establish child support. The R&B star has allegedly also requested that the boys be eligible to inherit from him. He has asked that they keep his surname

Thiam. Akon has previously claimed that he has multiple children with three different women, maintaining he has healthy relationships with them all. He also stated and that he wishes to keep his family protected from the media.

Nas Mesmerised By Wonder

Nas thinks Stevie Wonder’s lyrics are “beautiful”. The rapper constantly looks to legendary musicians for inspiration. Nas loves the lyrics to Stevie’s These Three Words as they tell a story so simply. “It just says ‘I love you.’ It’s great. It’s short and kind, like he says in the lyrics,” he gushed in an interview with NME magazine. “I think the lyrics of the song are beautiful and the way he sings it is amazing.” Nas has also revealed the DJ who inspired his award-winning career. The 38year-old hip-hop star says a fellow music enthusiast encouraged him to be innovative with his work. “DJ Hot Day was a guy from my block in my neighbourhood. He was a young entrepreneur and started his own record label,” he explained. “He recorded stuff and did stuff with R&B and hiphop that was not being done before.”

Alanis Morissette: Songs can’t help heartbreak

Alanis Morissette thinks writing songs can’t heal heartbreak after realising music is just a form of art. Alanis Morissette thinks writing songs can’t heal heartbreak. The 38-yearold singer discovered a more mature outlook on songwriting with her seventh album ‘Havoc and Bright Lights’ after she realised her angst-ridden songs couldn’t mend her broken heart and music is just a form of art. Alanis said: “I used to think that writing a song about something would heal it. After singing ‘You Oughta Know’ 450,000 times, I was still pretty hung up. “I realised that art is just a beautiful form of expression.” The singer - who has 20-month-old son Ever with husband Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway - shot to fame in 1995 with her iconic angry anthems on ‘Jagged Little Pill’ album, but despite now pioneering a more uplifting musical style, she still loves listening to depressing music. Alanis told Stylist magazine: “One of my favourite songs at the moment is Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, that idea of someone with whom you were so intimate now being a stranger is painful and gorgeous.” The star also recently admitted she wishes she had reached out for help when she came down with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of her debut LP. She said: “Everything was about, ‘I can do it myself.’ It completely dismissed the idea of connecting with each other. I wish I’d asked for more support.”

Enrique Iglesias Offered American Idol Job

Renowned music producer, Josh Leo is celebrating his 23rd #1 song! Leo has either produced or written 23 #1 songs in his career as a songwriter, producer and musician. To say he is a Renaissance Man is probably an understatement: the man has written six #1 songs and has countless Platinum and Gold album production credits to his name, but he’s also played on albums for everyone from the Eagles’ Timothy B. Enrique Iglesias has reportedly been offered a judging role worth $4 million on the next series of ‘American Idol’. Enrique Iglesias has been offered a judging role on ‘American Idol’. The ‘Hero’ singer has reportedly been given the chance to join Mariah Carey - the only person confirmed to appear on the new panel so far - when the 12th series of the show returns next year. Website Entertainment Weekly says he has been offered $4 million to appear on the talent search show. If Enrique does take the role, he will have been in a good position to pick up tips from ex-judge Jennifer Lopez - who quit this year after two seasons - over the last few months as he has been touring with her. Longstanding panelist Randy Jackson is thought to be stepping into more of a mentor role, while producers are thinking of expanding the judging desk to include four people. In the frame are said to be rapper Nicki Minaj, Australian country artist Keith Urban and pop singer Adam Lambert. Nicki has been keeping tight lipped as to whether she would accept a role on the show. She told E! news: “I don’t know yet. I really don’t know. I have no comment on it.” Weighing in with his opinion, singer-songwriter Ne-Yo said he could see how both Nicki and Enrique

would work as judges on the show. He said: “Between Nicki and Enrique I think both of them would do a good job, but Enrique’s been in the game longer so he might have a bit more insight on what these kids need to know. “But see, on the other side of that, Nicki has basically gone through what they are about to go through recently, so I don’t know, it’s a toss up.”

Lady Gaga Slammed For Wearing Fox Fur

Lady Gaga has been slammed by PETA, who claim she is heartless, for wearing a white fox fur in Germany earlier this week. Lady Gaga has been slammed by PETA, who claim she is heartless. The animal rights group - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - have criticised the ‘Poker Face’ hitmaker after she was spotted wearing a white fox fur scarf in Cologne, Germany on Wednesday (05.09.12). Wendy Wegner, a spokesperson for the organisation said: “The picture speaks for itself. PETA is considering passing the hat so that someone can buy her a heart.” The scarf, which still had the animal’s head attached, appeared to be from an Arctic White Fox, which is often electrocuted for its fur. At one time Gaga took a stand against wearing animal skin, stepping out in a jacket made from Kermit the Frog puppets, an ironic statement against the fur trade. However, she appears to have changed her stance, and recently said she would no longer comment on whether she wore fur or not. She wrote on her website: “I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux furpile or real because I would think it hypercritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, ‘kermit’ and not to mention meat, that I have already worn. “You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance.” Gaga, 26, has also attacked Peta’s campaign against fur for it use of shock tactics. She wrote: “I want you to know that I care deeply about your feelings and views, and I will always support your philosophies about life. “I do not however support violent, abusive, and childish campaigns for ANY CAUSE. Particularly one that I respect. Animal Rights.”

Peter Wolf Discusses Deceptive J. Geils Band Lawsuit

While Peter Wolf and the J. Geils Band get ready to return home to Boston for a show at the House of Blues this weekend, the band continue to put on fiery live performances amid a legal mess with one of its founding members. The word choices say it all for Wolf, who joined Chuck Nowlin on 100.7 WZLX to talk at length about the lawsuit brought on the J. Geils Band

MUSIC BIZ

, The self-titled Whispering Pines CD, is due out on September 18th Their name formed when band members Joe Bourdet, Brian Filosa and David Baine were acting as Jonathan Wilson’s backing band a few years back and is inspired by the group’s deep love for the music of “The Band”. A&M Octone Records’ Miss Willie Brown made their debut at the Grand Ole Opry on Sat., Aug. 11. The duo, comprised of Kasey Buckley and Amanda Watkins, performed “Bonafide” and the emotionally charged ballad “Let Me In,” which prompted a standing ovation from the crowd. “I remember being a little girl and taking a tour of the Opry with my parents, so to be standing on that stage was beyond humbling for me. It was a moment I’ve dreamed about since I was 10 years old,” said Watkins. “This is, hands down, one of the greatest experiences we have had since we started playing music,” added Buckley. Pictured above: President Grand Ole Opry Group Steve Buchanan, Watkins, Buckley and Opry Vice President and General Manager Pete Fisher. Photos by Chris Hollo, Hollophotographics for 2012 Grand Ole Opry. by Mr. J. Geils himself over the use of his name. ‘Deceptive,’ ‘disturbing’ and ‘fraudulent’ are just some of the ways Wolf describes Geils’ legal action against the band. Describing the lawsuit’s principal issue, Wolf compared his band to the Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers and Van Halen in that they kept their band name even through multiple lineup changes and losing members with the same name. ‘The name represents the group as a whole,’ Wolf says of those bands. He added later: ‘The J. Geils Band represents an energy, an attitude, and a catalog of work that I and Seth Justman have wrote and the band has for many years committed to play and its a certain style. Not unlike Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.’ Wolf continues saying, in likely a veiled shot at J. Geils, that for a band member to truly be part of the group he must embrace it and embody it in all aspects of work. ‘It’s not just the musicality; someone has to commit their body, mind and heart. It takes a lot of energy and passion to make the show what it is and provide the music the way we do it. You can’t do a James Brown show and relax. You gotta be able to work,’ he says. Wolf makes it clear that the band were shocked by Geils’ actions and do not agree that the band’s integrity was being compromised. ‘What Jay did behind everyones back was very disturbing. If we felt that the NMW - SEPTEMBER 14, 2012

musicality and the integrity of the band was at stake we would not be on the road.’ Wolf took the suit as an attack against a brotherhood that should never happen between members. ‘J. Geils did a very deceptive thing; it was not what we’d consider in any way a correct way to do to band brothers,’ he said. The band will perform at the House of Blues on Lansdowne St. this Saturday night, with or without Geils and his lawsuit. ‘We’re not allowing one person to put a stop to Boston history, and by deceptive ways which we find to be fraudulent,’ he says of the lawsuit’s attempt to derail the band’s current tour. ‘This was not a choice of the band. We love to play and we love our fans and when the opportunity came to play in an intimate venue, we could not allow one person to prevent that. ‘We have a long history and our history is going to continue. Like bands that stay around for decades, there are curves and twists and binds. The good ones are able to get through it.’ Wolf also alludes to lost respect for Geils in the wake of the suit, indicating that the relationship between Geils and Wolf (and potentially the rest of the band) is permanently damaged. While we hope the lawsuit is settled amicably and some kind of reconciliation one day happens, it appears right now that the J. Geils Band will never again include J. Geils as a member.

Dierks Bentley is back on top at Country radio and make no mistake about that my friends. “Tip It On Back” (Capitol Nashville) is the gem that is taking him back to the very top of the “most added” list all over the format. It should be a very solid run once again for him. Toby Keith also has a new hit single on his hands that is most suited for him and his music fans. “I Love Girls That Drink Beer” (Show Dog/Universal), puts him where he needs to be and is really most certainly playing right into the hands of his base. Darius Rucker, the true new gentlemen of Country, keeps his class act alive. “True Believers” (Capitol) is the single that is putting him back on top. Expect more great things from this amazing talent to come in the world of Country music. Who knew? The Eli Young Band keeps building their legend of fans around the country. They are taking their new track “Say Goodnight” (Republic Nashville) for a spin around the block and “so far, so good”. Alan Jackson continues to prove why he is the true “king of Country”. This major talent has a new single out at the format entitled” You Go Your Way” (Capitol/EMI), and that songs just proves my point. Colt Ford has teamed up with his pal Jake Owen for a red hot hit single. “Back” (Average Joes Entertainment) is the one that is happening strong for this new duo. Craig Morgan continues to act like the rising Country star he is. “More Trucks Than Cars” (Black River) could be one of his best to date and watch for some big weeks to come for this gem. Recording artist Kelleigh Bannen has a lot to be very proud of. “Sorry On The Rocks” (EMI) is the little gem that could and expect great things ahead for this new talent. Thomas Rhett is off to a great start with a new single. “Beer With Jesus” (Big Machine/ Universal) is his single and he has a lot to be thankful for. What could be getting to him is that his label mate Taylor Swift is also off to her best single so far. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (Big Machine/Universal) is a multi-format smash hit and it makes the Big Machine family even bigger. Miranda Lambert is still one of the most talented Country female artists around. Her new “Fastest Girl In Town” (RCA Nashville) keeps her at pace with the best of them. Jason Aldean continues his quest to be at the top of his game. “Take A Little Ride” (Broken Bow) may just take him a little closer to that goal. Danny Griego is getting some nice spins and action for his ”Mean Mexican Woman” (WHP) and why not. Carrie Underwood continues to bring quality music to Country radio. Her current “Blown Away” (Arista/RLG) allows her to shine like the true star she is. Zac Brown Band is one of the best out there these days. “The Wind” (Southern Ground/Atlantic) is their latest and what a gem it is. Michael B Rowe keeps building his profile. The single “Birthday Cake” (WHP) is helping to make that happen for him. Kip Moore has a real winner on his hands. “Beer Money” (MCA) is the one that is pulling in hot phones. Also lighting up the request lines is Brantley Gilbert. The single “Kickin’ It In The Sticks” (Big Machine/Universal) is pure magic and is now making its way up. Recording artist Steve Richard has got an impressive thing going at radio. “Toothbrush” (Force MP) is the track to spend some time on. Vince Hatfield is back on the radio and that’s always a good thing. His new “Sometimes You Gotta Get Away” (Blue Moon) is one of his best to date. I’m also really loving the Coleman Brothers and their “Ghost Town” (Fishing Hole). It’s great to see Tommy Row on the Country charts. His new “Devils Soul Pile” (Airebelle) is a great single that deserves attention. Buck McCoy is “on fire” with his “I Don’t Know The World Anymore” (Weir Brothers). Jimmy White is “on the move” at the format. His “Warm” (828) single is moving up in impressive fashion. Marsha Jewell’s “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) is also doing quite well and we’re so proud of her. I’ll have more on the greatest Country Hits of all time right here next time in this column.

C arrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of “American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into a promotion that is sure to please her fan following. S ony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which was released in May. U sing the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival.

“ Carrie Underwood is always looking for ways to connect with her fans,” said Gary Overton, Sony Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans something special and provide a cool, unique connection between the artist and audience. Sony Music Nashville is excited to watch this fun idea unfold and is eager to partner with Aurasma on other future campaigns.” U pon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010. “ Carrie Underwood is a proven superstar. We are thrilled to partner with Sony Music Nashville to help increase the momentum of her smash album Blown Away,” said Jennifer Rapp, general manager of Aurasma. “By leveraging augmented reality to bridge the physical and virtual worlds, Sony gives the fans something exclusive and special, helping to keep fans connected and Carrie in the spotlight.” T he free Aurasma app runs on iPhone 3GS (and above), iPad2 (and above), and high-powered Android devices. Y esterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! NMW - SEPTEMBER 14, 2012

Dee Hilligoss Strikes a Chord With ‘Too Soon’ Whether it be caring for a loved one, or promoting her music,Dee Hilligoss is in it for the long haul. Currently on the road promoting her new single, “Too Soon,” she is excited about the impact the song has had thus far. “We just released it, and it’s available on iTunes, and we are on about 50 radio stations across the country, and adding more each week. People have really responded great to it,” she says. The song immediately struck a chord with the Indiana native. “It’s something that as soon as I heard, I knew I wanted to cut it. It seems that everyone goes through a struggle in their life, whether it be a divorce, or the loss of a loved one, or a child getting sick, or a challenge that you go through. I think it’s those moments that really define us. We figure out how strong we are as human beings. If we can get through these tough times, that’s what really counts. The song is really motivating to me, and speaks to what I had gone through with my divorce and my son.” And, what she has gone through has been very amazing. “I was singing, dancing, and acting growing up, and had spent time in New York and Los Angeles growing up. In the summer of 2001, I was in the process of moving back to New York City to jump start my career where I had left off. I had my son, and he was two. I was signing a lease on 9/11,” she says, adding that the emotion of the moment made her return home. “I packed up and went back to Indiana. My plan was to go back to New York in the winter of 2002. But, in December, my son was diagnosed with autism.” That was a game changer, the singer says. “At that point, everything stopped and nothing else mattered. I went on a research mission to find out what I needed to know to take care of my son.” When it comes to her earliest musical influences, she sums them up with one-name artists. “There was Dolly, and as I got older in junior high, I was a huge Prince fan. The first concert I ever went to was in the seventh grade at the Indiana State Fair. It was Tiffany, with New Kids On The Block opening for her. You never forget things at that. In my high school years, I listened to more country. I was a huge Travis Tritt fan. Reba. I listened to everything.” Hilligoss has appeared in commercials, on stage, and even on the football field. “I was an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader,” she says gleefully. Getting back on the stage was a course she knew she would have to take. “I knew that as he got better, if it was possible, I had to get back to what I loved. My child is a huge music fan. He loves having his mother sing.”

College radio is “alive and well”, especially for our Summer Music Preview. We’re still getting raves from our latest Future Hits volume #41 and that is music to our ears and eyes. Check out all of the charts in this issue and you will see what a landfall of music mainly from the Independent artist and band arena. We are truly radio’s “only real voice” when it comes to breaking new recording artists. We’ve also got some amazing news to share with you as we keep our College dreams “alive and well”. Here in this column we say to you, “what student loans?” Stone Axe wants to clear the air this Summer. As is typical in rock n’ roll, the rumor mill has been churning and grinding the truth into a semblance of its original form. Since returning from a highly successful tour of the UK and parts of Europe in April, Stone Axe fans have been receiving some mixed messages about the future of these classic rock preservationists. After two Deluxe CD re-issues, a live album, and several years of constant road work, the chief songwriters of the band realized that they needed a break to keep things fresh. So, they put Stone Axe on hiatus for a short while. Look for Stone Axe to return in the near future, but in the meantime, enjoy the bands vast catalog of releases, and look for brand new material from Mos Generator and Cokewulf. Arachnid Amp Cabs USA has something you may need. They do it with a product that combines high-quality carpentry with low prices. Musicians that need equipment can make it through the all phases of a show – set up, performance, and tear down – and do so for years on end. Industry standard amplifier cabinets cost an arm and a leg, and that is for a cabinet made from weak particleboard. Arachnid Amp Cabs combines high-quality carpentry with highquality materials and at a lower price than industry standard. Arachnid Amp Cabs use solid pine and birch plywood to improve strength and acoustics. The cabinets are joined using dovetail joints as well as adhesives for unparalleled strength that will stand the test of time. You can’t beat that with a stick my friends. Viacom Music & Logo Group’s O Music Awards, www. omusicawards.com, and The Flaming Lips have successfully smashed the Guinness World Record previously held by Jay-Z for most concerts performed in multiple cities after a historic road trip through the Mississippi Delta region which now ranks as the most-viewed digitally driven event in Viacom Music & Logo Group history, including generating more than 43 million votes (nearly twice more than the previous record) and producing a US trending topic (#OMA). “To be able to pick up this silly drinking book-after all, Guinness is a beer-this funny book that when I was growing up was a curiosity. To be published alongside the man who ate 22 pounds of his own boogers, beside the woman with the longest toenails or perhaps even to be published beside an individual who has had maybe 1000 cockroaches stuffed into their ears... that, to me, would be one of life’s absurd joys,” said The Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne. Kicking off in Memphis on July 27,The Flaming Lips board a tricked tour bus, Endeavor, and play a series of shows throughout the Mississippi Delta region joined by a diverse lineup of artists including Jackson Browne, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Neon Trees, Gary Clark Jr., and Karmin, Hunter Hayes. Rock icons Duran Duran will have their new live album—A Diamond In The Mind: Duran Duran Live In Concert 2011 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)—streamed live on Spotify for 24 hours, one day prior to its 10 North American release. Recorded live at Manchester, England’s MEN Arena in December of 2011, the career-spanning show, which also includes numerous tracks off the band’s recently released All You Need Is Now CD, is a stunning reminder why original members Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Nick Rhodes continue to be a vibrant artistic force in pop music today. In fact, the band will be representing England when they headline the upcoming BT London Live Opening Ceremony Celebration Concert in Hyde Park, London for the 2012 Summer Olympics. A Diamond In The Mind: Duran Duran Live In Concert 2011 will also be available on DVD, Blu-Ray, CD and in a Special Deluxe Edition that features all three formats plus bonus material, via Eagle Rock Entertainment (North America). Duran Duran is currently wrapping up a world tour in support of All You Need Is Now, with dates in Europe in June and July, and the US throughout August. NMW - SEPTEMBER 14, 2012
