A SPECIAL SUMMER ISSUE

Sun, Music & Fun

Throughout our lives it seems that we always antiquate Summer with the music that we listened to in a particular year. Music seems to have the ability to put a stamp on any year and we can always seem to document our lives by looking back at the hit songs we remember. It’s the vacation times of our lives and the fact that the weather is hot and good (for most parts of the country) that helps to build those amazing summers in our minds. In later years we will hear an old song come on the radio and drift back to one of our best Summer’s ever, the power of music prevails during these special memories. For many bands and recording artists, they look towards Summer as their time to shine. Again with the weather being at its best, it makes for the very best time for travel and touring. The fact that the kids are out of school and its vacation time for many also opens up the opportunity for concerts from outdoor arenas to those fabulous concerts in the park. Whether you’re a top name artist or band or if you’re just a hard working independent artist, it’s your time to take your music on the road and play for the fans. Nothing is better than a great outdoor (or indoor) Summer concert series. Record labels also look towards this time of year to put out the right track for their artists. For many it’s about leaving the ballad behind and keeping the up-tempo tracks out there to keep pace with the excitement and energy of this very special season. Some experts tell us to hold the ballads for the winter time when the weather is cold and the ballads help keep us warm. There are always exceptions to the rule and some that dare to put a ballad out in the Summer can sink or swim. We’ll examine a few of those situations. Newcomer Sam Smith took no fear in releasing his “Stay With Me” that has become an instant smash hit. The fact that there are so few ballads this Summer also opened up opportunities for Sam to fill slots that might be open for that type of a song. Summer anthems are also open to those that plan ahead. In Country, the Jake Owen song “Beachin’” is set to become that type of record to mark the Country Summer of 2014. It didn’t take Kenny Chesney too long to make his mark with “American Kids”. That song just exploded on the charts and is headed to the top of Country charts from coast to coast in record time. In the world of Top40 and Hot AC, nobody made a better plan than Calvin Harris. His single of “Summer” was actually released months before the season but gave it enough time to become a Top 5 Hit just as the Summer months started. You can bet that it will be around well into the fall season. No duo released a better Summer record than Nico & Vinz. Their “Am I Wrong” has Summer written all over it as it continues it’s way to the very top of the charts. The biggest winner of the Summer however belongs to Magic. This band hit the mark with “Rude” and their biggest problem may just be with a follow-up. For many artists it may be too late to take advantage of the Summer opportunities but it’s a good time to make your plans for the next one. Use the examples of good weather conditions and up-tempo relevant songs to set your sight for a year from now. For the smart ones all of the planning should be set in motion by next Spring so that you hit your mark just in time. You can’t go too early with a plan nor can you afford to strike too late. It’s really all about the timing so early planning is the key to having a successful Summer in music. New Music Weekly will continue to offer the best “tools of the trade” for much of this so reach out to us in plenty of time for us to help you name for a very memorable Summer.

New York pop singer-and-songwriter duo Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino make up A Great Big World. In late 2013, everybody who had heard the group’s single “Say Something” reacted to it. After playing during a pivotal segment of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, this little song began its journey to becoming a big platinum-selling hit. The terse, tearful piano and Axel’s heavenly hypnotic vocals tugged on heartstrings worldwide. One heart that felt it especially hard belonged to none other than Christina Aguilera. “We got this email from her that was written like a poem about the song,” Axel recalls. “She told us that she wanted to work with us, and we were completely floored. We couldn’t believe it. A week later, we were in Los Angeles recording it with her. Now it’s even more universal, relatable, and broader in scope.” “Everything just started happening after that,” Vaccarino goes on. “Soon, it was like we’d lived a whole lifetime in just a few months. A Great Big World went on to perform the song with Aguilera on NBC’s The Voice, and that version took off to #1 on iTunes. The same phenomena occurred after a heartfelt performance at The American Music Awards, which generated worldwide applause. They closed out the year bringing the audience at The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to its feet followed up by sold out New Year’s Eve gigs supporting Maroon 5. However, their journey formally begins with the 2014 release of Is There Anybody Out There? Songs like “I Really Want It” coast forward on swinging piano and uplifting choruses that instantly invigorate and inspire. It’s pop with a purpose and a positive message. “It’s about committing to the fact that all we have is the moment,” Vaccarino reveals. “We only have right now. There is no future and no past, so we should do what we want to.” A Great Big World has a very “big” future that we will continue to document here at New Music Weekly. 3

One Republic continues to rock the Top40 world with every single release. Their latest in “Love Runs Out” (Interscope) keeps this red hot act moving ahead of the pack. It has to be one of their best singles to date and the stats tell the tale. The band Magic is most certainly making some magic at radio. “Rude” (RCA/RLG) has been on-fire since its release and there is every indicator that they are looking at their first #1 single. For a new act, one can only hope that there is a follow-up in the mix. Jennifer Lopez continues to charm her way up the charts. She pulls out all of the stops (and so does Capitol) in the very delicious and cleaver “First Love” (Capitol/EMI). We’ll see how it all plays out for Jennifer in the coming weeks but all bets are on that this track has serious potential Maroon 5 continue to work it strong at multi-formats. Adam Levine and company are getting raves from radio and the fans for their current offering in “Maps” (222/Interscope) and for very good reason. It’s without a doubt the best sounding release from this act ever. I’m happy to see that the young and talented Ariana Grande is really making her mark at Top40 and just about everywhere else too. “Problem” (Universal Republic) has raced to the top of the charts and in record time, putting this young talent right where she belongs. Pharrell Williams can do no wrong. The mastermind behind “Happy”, “Blurred Lines” and Daft Punk has come full circle. His latest in “Come Get It Bae” (Columbia/Sony) is not one of his all-time best but it will do for a Summer hit to be sure. One Direction keeps their teen fans cooing. They do it well again as “You And I” (Syco/Columbia) takes flight. This keeps their king and ruler Simon Cowell a very happy new father. Demi Lovato has teamed up with talented Cher Lloyd and the results are stellar. Our panel of music and program directors continues to rave about the “Really Don’t Care” (Hollywood) duet. Tiesto and recording artist Matthew Koma are making beautiful music together. The single “Wasted” (Universal Republic) is pulling in some rather impressive numbers so early in the game. This is an indicator that big things are about to happen. Nicki Minaj keeps her strange music thing going and she displays it very well in the new single “Pills And Potions” (Young Money/Cash Money/Republic). A good example (no doubt) to the young people in America. How about those Madden Brothers? Out of the blue their newly released single entitled “We Are Done” (Capitol) is totally killing it at radio. You can bet that the brass over at Capitol are on board big time to make this single happen. Charli XCX continues her sexy ways in the single “Boom Clap” (Atlantic/WEA). It is delicious. And speaking of sexy, how about the Naked Cowgirl?! We first caught her act on America’s Got Talent when she performed “I Love Nick” (Sexy Records) to the surprised and embarrassed Nick Cannon and now her single is taking off at radio “big time”. Remember that you heard and read about the Naked Cowgirl first right here on the pages of New Music Weekly magazine. The American Authors are beginning to rule the radio world thanks in part to the follow-up to “Best Days OF Our Lives. Now they are marching to “Believer” (IDJMG) and it seems to be working. Benzo continues to impress the format with his powerful “Heartbeat”. Newcomer Brandy Moss Scott is pulling in stations at every turn with her brilliant rendition of “Benny & The Jets” (Heavenly Tunes). Marsha Jewel is moving fast as her new “Tomorrow” (Jewel Lane) take flight. Giulia Nahmany is off and running as her “Girl To Change Your World” (Goldline) rules the radio world. I’ll have more for you next time right here. Now let’s go out and have the best Summer ever!

Nico & Vinz have one of the perfect songs out that will no doubt become a Summer anthem. “Am I Wrong” (WB/ WEA) is brilliant and it only gets better with each listen. I’m not sure where they came from at this point but they might be looking at their first #1 single. One of my favorite bands in Capital Cities is back at it at multi-formats. “One Minute More” (Capitol/EMI) is just another reason to like the exceptional outfit. Their debut single “Safe and Sound” put them on the map and this single should and will continue to build their already hot stock. American Authors keep rolling out the hits. Their latest entry in “Believer” (IDJMG) is quite strong and will no doubt take them out of the “one hit wonder” category. We’ll see how it all plays out in the weeks to come for them. Coldplay is back and make no mistake about that. Their new “A Sky Full Of Stars” (Atlantic/WEA) is getting raves at radio and for good reason , it’s just that good. Make sure to check out the video for this song that is really quite something. It’s great to have them back at radio where they belong. There is no better artist for the AC format than Jason Mraz. He’s back at it with yet another brilliant offering in “Love Someone” (Atlantic/WEA). He is super talented and all of his songs are quite magical. Expect a fast ride up the charts for Jason and his latest work of art. Maroon 5 has yet another hit on their hands and it might just be their best to date. The single “Maps” (222/Interscope) has an amazing sound that is not only taking the AC format by storm but Top40 is also all over this one big time. Recording artist Sam Smith seems to have come from out of nowhere to be just about everywhere. His “Stay With Me” (Capitol/EMI) is fast becoming a pop anthem and to top that off he also has a hit single singing alongside Disclosure. If all things keep going as they seem to be, this will be the Summer that radio crowned a new sensation in Sam Smith. Brandy Moss Scott has released her own rendition of the classic Elton John song “Benny & The Jets” (Heavenly Tunes) and radio is really loving this version big time. She put her own unique urban spin on it and it seems to be working. Watch for some big weeks ahead for this gem. The Florida Georgia Line has teamed up with Jason Derulo for a rendition of their “This Is How We Roll” (Republic Nashville), You may recall that they teamed up with Nelly for their first big hit single so why not try a pop pairing all over again. We’ll see how this all pans out but so far it seems to be working just fine. One Republic keeps their streak alive and well as they roll out another smash. The single “Love Runs Out” (Interscope) is their latest and greatest and what a cool track this is. It’s pulling in top phones with every spin and for good reason. I’m also happy to see that the talented Andy Grammer is back at AC radio. His latest single “Back Home” (S Curve/EMI) continues to showcase just how really brilliant he is. Marsha Jewell is back on top with yet another amazing single. Her latest in “Tomorrow” (Jewell Lane) a song inspired by the passing of her husband Don is really quite a masterpiece. She continues to amaze us and for good reason. Expect some big weeks ahead for this gem. Lorde continues to rock our world and this time out she takes “Tennis Court” (Lava/Republic) for a spin to rave reviews. Giulia Nahmany is breaking big time with her Summer hit in “Girl To Change Your World” (Goldline) and make no mistake about that. The Naked Cowgirl is breaking fast and furious with her “I Love Nick” inspired by her performance on America’s Got Talent” and she could go all the way. Benzo is rocking strong with his amazing “Heartbeat” (New Terra) that has held the #1 spot on our AC Indie Chart for weeks now. I’ll have more for you next time right here – hit the beach!

Dream Wrangler Meredith Day Introduces Teen Singer Autumn Sky Wolfe For decades Talent Scout and Developer Meredith Day has been well known for having great ÒEarsÓ. She discusses some favorite projects including her newest Teen Singer: IÕve been blessed with great projects including Animal Bag, Margo Harshman, Adrianna Le—n and Halfway Band. My job is to hear their dreams and put them on a path to achieve it. Each project is different. I provide the tools, enabling them for success. Animal Bag came to LA to get signed at the tail end of the glam band era. Commonly selling bars out of beer with all originals in their hometown of Charlotte NC, they couldnÕt get a gig in Hollywood due to Òlack of imageÓ. Their talent and music completely blew me away and I took them on. I put them up over the radar and they were signed to Steve Moir Music Management and Mercury Polygram Records. Margo Harshman dreamed of acting. I developed her, and she debuted as Shia LabeoufÕs girlfriend ÒTawny DeanÓ on DisneyÕs ÒEven StevensÓ. SheÕs seen on ÒBig Bang TheoryÓ and the upcoming ÒMentryvilleÓ. She records and regularly performs her original music with Loren Frost.

Adrianna (AKA Adrianne) Le—nÕs big dream was to be Òon a soapÓ. I found her scouting David and Ann SchulzÕs Star Theatre Company in Oceanside Ca. Same place I discovered Margo. I helped Adrianna place her music on ÒGeneral HospitalÓ which led to her Emmy Nominated role of Brook Lynn Ashton and then Colleen Carlton on ÒThe Young And The RestlessÓ as well as her own music project ÒCaught CrimsonÓ.

I heard ÒHalfway BandÓ AKA ÒHalfway DecentÓ music in a gas station in Orange County. They were already making great money playing biker bars and Òkegger partiesÓ. After development the band won 4th place over 400 bands in KROQÕs 2012 CaboWabo Band Competition with their great original song ÒThe BirdÓ. Currently they are getting ready for their 3rd summer DIY tour. Their video ÒAbstract ArtÓ won Best YouTube.com 3D Video in 2012. They are currently interviewing sponsors for their 2014 tour. Teen singer Autumn Sky Wolfe has been my most amazing find to date. I overheard her singing in a hallway, a raw voice with tons of wonderful potential. I took her on. I felt she could be a significant performer. She reminded me of myself at her age. Big dreams. Autumn has a silver bullet that is very rare in live performers. She has ABSOLUTELY NO STAGE FRIGHT. I have seen her perform shows when everything was crashing around her and she doesnÕt miss a beat. Amazing. Autumn has released her first DIY single and EP titled ÒFire And IceÓ, currently available on iTunes etcÉ romantic POP Ballads. The cd includes a wonderful duet with Lenny KravitzÕs drummer Franklin Vanderbilt, ÒComplicated EyesÓ. I feel Autumn should be a real inspiration to any kid with a big dream! We are shopping for more original music for Autumn. For Info. contact Meredith Day through www.NationalTalentDevelopment.com NMW - JULY 18, 2014

ALL ROADS

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life.

Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again. NMW - JULY 18, 2014

Adam Levine Proud of Journey

Adam Levine feels “so blessed” to have overcome his problems in the past. The Maroon 5 frontman has marked his big screen debut in romantic drama Begin Again as Dave, a musician who lets the fame get to his head after he lands a major record deal. After having gone through a similar process with his award-winning band, Adam can relate to Dave’s struggles as he comes to terms with the limelight. “This guy was me at a certain point. He’s about to be lost and is losing it,” Adam explained to People. “Granted, it wasn’t the same experience. But all of a sudden you have much more at your disposal - girls, money, alcohol, whatever. Your vices become magnified. You get to the edge of a cliff, and if you jump off you’re screwed. I’ve been so blessed. Thank God for my family and friends who supported me.” Begin Again also stars Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo as singer-songwriter Greta and disgraced music producer Dan. Despite acting opposite massive names, Adam didn’t feel any pressure. “I wouldn’t say I was nervous. I was actually really excited,” he smiled. “I had a lot to prove, so I had to pretend like I knew what I was doing. I was also really busy, so I didn’t have time to stew in my own insecurities.” Away from the camera the 35-year-old star is planning his nuptials to model Behati Prinsloo, who he is set to tie the knot with soon. Adam, who dated a string of famous beauties before the Victoria’s Secret Angel, briefly spoke about organising the big day. “We’re doing our thing. It’s not like we’re that involved. We’re involved in that we’re doing what we want to do, when we want to do it, with people we want to do it with,” he explained. “Can you imagine me as a planner? I’m probably going through more than you think and less than you think as well. We’re pretty detached from the process. We just want to do it. It won’t be typical, I can tell you that.”

Neil Young said he would donate to music organisations in the region to make up for the last minute cancellation. ‘I will be making donations to both the Louise Tillie Alpert Youth Music Centre of Israel, and Heartbeat, two organisations that teach music to Palestinian and Israeli youth simultaneously by enabling them to play music together,’ he said A spokesperson for Neil Young added, ‘It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we must cancel our one and only Israeli concert due to tensions which have rendered the event unsafe at this time. We’ll miss the opportunity to play for our fans and look forward to playing in Israel and Palestine in peace.’ Neil Young and Crazy Horse started the 2014 European tour in Iceland last weekend. Original member Billy Talbot suffered a stroke last month and has been replaced by Young’s longtime bass player Rick Rosas.

Lovato: Enjoy Your World

Demi Lovato wants fans to put down their devices for a moment. The 21-yearold pop star was compelled to comment on the epidemic of social media users so busy snapping photos they forget to enjoy experiences in the flesh. Ironically, she logged onto Twitter to share her feelings. ‘Life is so much more than cool pictures for Instagram,’ she wrote her 23 million followers. ‘Enjoy your [world],’ she continued, including an emoticon of planet Earth. Demi is known to update her own social networks quite frequently, keeping fans informed about her upcoming world tour, as well as including micro-blogs about how she’s feeling. Her note Sunday night came just days after the star was tangled in an online scandal after her naked image was reportedly leaked. The 21-year-old star, who is rumoured to be dating former That ‘70s Show actor Wilmer Valderrama, received unwanted attention after his Twiitter account was apparently hacked July 3. Radar Online reported at the time numerous intimate photos of Demi had been released to the world. Apparently pictures of Wilmer and Demi making out were also leaked during the alleged cyberattack. Wilmer then swiftly logged onto his account, tweeting: ‘ATTENTION EVERYONE! Someone just hacked my twitter account!!!!!!’ Shortly after the actor made the announcement, his Twitter handle was taken offline. It has since been reinstated.

CeeLo’s ‘Texting Assistant’

CeeLo Green has a man who follows him around texting on two cell phones. The musician recently made the move to the big screen with Begin Again, a movie which also stars Keira Knightley and James Corden. British actor James

was thrilled to get to work with CeeLo on the release, which is about struggling musicians in New York City. “The most fun in the world,” James told British magazine Heat of CeeLo. “He has a guy who goes everywhere with him, who stands at his shoulder. He has two phones and is just constantly texting on them. Every now and then he shows CeeLo a message - that’s all he does.” James was quizzed on what was in the texts being sent, but insisted he had no further information. “I’ve no idea what he was doing or who he was, but he was texting two people at the same time and I’ve never seen anything like it,” he laughed. Keira was also good to collaborate with, not least because she and James were encouraged to make the set a fun place. They forged a strong bond and the actor was happy to see that is apparent in the movie. “We got on really well and I’m so please that comes across in the film. I think maybe because the two of us were Brits in New York, it brought us together a bit more,” he explained. “She’s so relaxed. She takes the work seriously, but she doesn’t take herself seriously, which is the best kind of person. And I think this is one of her best performances. She’s so warm in it.”

Radiohead Recording New Album In September

Radiohead will return to the studio in September to record the follow-up to 2011’s ‘The King Of Limbs’. Since the last album Thom Yorke has released ‘Amok’ with his supergroup Atoms For Peace featuring Flea from Red Hot Chili Pepoers. Jonny Greenwood is a soundtrack composer outside Radiohead and will release his sixth soundtrack for the movie ‘Inherent Vice’, starring Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix later this year. His brother, Radiohead bass player Colin Greenwood is non-musical outside Radiohead. Guitarist Ed O’Brien has also been inactive out the band. Drummer Phil Selway will release his second solo album ‘Weatherhouse’ in October. Jonny Greenwood revealed the Radiohead plans to Marry Anne Hobbs on BBC6. ‘We’re going to start up in September, playing, rehearsing and recording and see how it’s sounding,’ he said. Radiohead have released eight albums starting with ‘Pablo Honey’ in 1993. The biggest success was 1997’s ‘OK Computer’ which sold over 2 million in the US, went 5 times Platinum in the UK (1.5 million sales) and Platinum in Australia (70,000 sales).

Bobby Brown Quits New Edition Tour

Bobby Brown has left the current New Edition Tour. The remaining members, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Michael Bivins, are continuing including tonight’s show in Grand Prairie, TX along with the

remaining ten dates of the tour. According to representatives for the group, Brown has left to take care of his health. “At this time, Bobby needs to put his health first, and we wish him a speedy recovery. We are giving each and every show all we’ve got until his return - and will continue giving the fans 110 percent each night.” No details were given on Brown’s health situation. Per TMZ, Brown has been having trouble performing recently and, at times, leaving the stage during the show.

Eminem ‘Won’t Apologise’

Eminem reportedly refuses to apologise about the botched sound at his London show Friday night. The rapper sold out Wembley Stadium for his first concert in the city since 2001, but many fans complained they couldn’t hear his lyrics due to the venue’s poor speakers. The Sunday People reports Eminem isn’t happy so many people had a bad experience, but blames Wembley for the issues. ‘Obviously Eminem was upset that some of his fans didn’t enjoy the show as much as they would have done but he won’t be saying anything, Wembley are investigating,’ a source said. “But, he wanted to ensure that things were sorted for tonight’s gig, he didn’t want it happening again.’ Apparently the mis-hap didn’t hinder Eminem’s performance, however. The hip-hop star reportedly felt like he gave a great show before he heard about all the problems. ‘He loved Friday’s show and was delighted with how it all went. He is sad for the fans who didn’t get to enjoy it as much as they should have done. However, he has been reassured that the whole stadium wasn’t affected,’ the insider added. The comments followed complaints from fans who travelled hours to the venue. “I’m a big Eminem fan but this is the first time I’d seen him live. He was good but the set up wasn’t great and the speakers were rubbish, for Wembley, you’d expect them to be better,’ Jonathan Sheldon, 18, previously told UK newspaper The Mirror. “We saw quite a few people leave because of the sound,’ he claimed. “It was good but the sound let it down. My ears were ringing. I knew the songs but couldn’t recognise some of them because the bass was too loud,’ Daisy Dukes, 17, added. A spokesperson for the venue meanwhile assured fans the sound had been adjusted for the Saturday night show. ‘We are aware of some sound issues from earlier tonight & have monitored & adjusted it where necessary. We thank you for your patience,’ read a statement from a Wembley rep.

Multi-Grammy Award winner “Weird Al” Yankovic is releasing Mandatory Fun (RCA Records), his first new album since 2011’s Alpocalypse, tomorrow. Alpocalypse, featuring the Lady Gaga parody “Perform This Way,” entered at No. 9 on the Billboard Top 200, the highest debut of Yankovic’s career. It was nominated for two Grammys, including Best Comedy Album and Best Short Form Video for “Perform This Way.” Yankovic will launch the new album by posting eight music videos in eight days, starting with “Tacky,” his spoof of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” which bowed today on Nerdist.com. Featuring guest appearances by comics Jack Black, Eric Stonestreet, Aisha Tylor, Margaret Cho and Kristen Schaal, the video was shot on location at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the same space used as Julianne Moore’s apartment in The Big Lebowski. The clip was produced by Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick, Seth Laderman and Johnny Wickham, offering a montage of clashing colors, socks-and-sandals, Jack Black’s backwards sequin fanny pack and “Weird Al”’s litany of social faux pas. Said Hardwick: “Al has always been one of my idols. If you had told teenage me that I would one day not only be friends with him but also get to produce a video for him, my young brain wouldn’t have been able to process it.” Mandatory Fun includes parodies of such songs as “Blurred Lines” (“Word Crimes”), “Fancy” (“Handy”), “Royals” (“Foil”) and “Radioactive” (“Inactive”), as well as style takeoffs on Southern Culture on the Skids (“Lame Claim to Fame”), Foo Fighters (“My Own Eyes”), Crosby, Stills & Nash (“Mission Statement”), Pixies (“First World Problems”) and Cat Stevens (“Jackson Park Express”). The “NOW That’s What I Call Polka!” medley features Al on accordion running through snippets of “Wrecking Ball,” “Pumped Up Kicks,” “Best Song Ever,” “Gangnam Style,” “Call Me Maybe,” “Scream & Shout,” “Somebody That I Used to Know,” “Timber,” “Sexy and I Know It,” “Thrift Shop” and “Get Lucky.”

Britney Spears ‘planning another baby’

Britney Spears is reportedly counting the days until her Las Vegas residency ends so she can have a baby. The 32-year-old singer is already mom to Sean Preston, eight, and seven-year-old Jayden James, who she has with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. She apparently feels ready to have a child with her boyfriend David Lucado, after they put on a show of unity following breakup rumours earlier this summer. “Britney cannot wait until the Vegas show is done because she wants to start a family with David,” an insider told Radar. “She says she will get pregnant as soon as the show is finished.” Britney’s Vegas residency began in December 2013 and will last for two years, seeing her perform around 100 times. They were said to have ended things last month, but she slammed the speculation by posting a picture of them together on social media. from 007 star Daniel Craig’s 2011 interview in which he slammed the reality star clan, dubbing them “f**king idiots” and openly “judging” them. The family matriarch reportedly doesn’t want Kanye to pursue the venture until the British actor apologises for his comments. ‘Kris isn’t budging but Kanye is still desperate to do it,” a source told British newspaper The Daily Star. ‘Kim isn’t taking sides, but is privately hoping he doesn’t end up recording the theme.’ Despite the musician’s dream, film bosses are still said to be taken with Adele after her 2012 theme for Skyfall. The film went on to become the highest grossing James Bond film made. ‘Kanye would do an amazing job but if Adele wants the gig it’s hers,” the source added. Meanwhile, the Stronger rapper is gearing up to finish The Yeezus Tour which promotes his latest album. The shows were originally meant to end last December in Canada, but Kanye added more dates in America for February and will be finishing up in Australia in September. It is thought these extra shows have become a concern for his spouse Kim, especially now they have daughter North. “Kim knows Kanye wants her and North with him. But she feels he needs to understand that she and North have a life too and his career can’t take priority over them,” a source previously said.

Kenny Chesney waited until Summer was in full bloom to pull his “American Kids” (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) out there. It’s such a surprise hit from Kenny who hasn’t had much out as of late and the response to this cleaver track is overwhelming. Look for a fast more to the top of the charts from Kenny Chesney. Rascal Flatts are fighting the good fight and are getting plenty of help from our panel of music and program directors for their newly released “Payback” (Big Machine/Universal). The fast and early rotations on this one are a true indicator that this is a very “active” single. Keith Urban is back at it with another smash. “Somewhere In My Car” (Capitol Nashville) the follow-up to “Cop Car” is taking off by leaps and bounds. Keith must have a thing for cars. Kip Moore has got a good thing and make no mistake about that. His new “Dirt Road” (MCA Nashville) has been pulling in some rather strong “most added” action and this single is well on its way. I’m so happy to see that Dolly Parton is back at Country radio. Her new single “Home” (Sony Masterworks) is getting raves from music critics and station programmers. We’ll see how it all plays out for Dolly in the weeks to come and we wish her the best with this great new song. Hunter Hayes is fast becoming everybody’s favorite young artist. He’s adding to his already strong stock with the track “Tattoo” (Atlantic Nashville). Many are calling him the most multi-talented musician/artists around and we have to agree with that. Luke Bryan keeps his endless streak of hits alive and well and why not. “Roller Coaster” (Capitol Nashville) is his latest and with the following that he’s building anything can happen for this monster talent. Travis Tritt is getting raves for his latest. “What Dreamers Do” (Post Oak) is pulling in impressive calls every time it gets a spin and according to our panel this song could become a very big one for the always amazing and powerful Travis Tritt. Tracy Lawrence is back at it with a song everybody seems to love. “Lie” (LMG) is the one that’s putting him back on the top of many charts where he belongs. We wish this super great guy the very best on this single. Faron Young is causing quite the stir. It’s all due to the song “You Don’t Know Me” (Country Rewind/Pretty World) that is pulling in fast and furious numbers. I’m also thrilled to see a new Willie Nelson out there at Country radio. “The Wall” (Legacy/RCA) is the latest from one of the greatest and we’ll see how it all plays out for Willie in the weeks to come but so far it’s looking real good for him. Lady Antebellum keeps the heat on just about every one as their new “Bartender” (Capitol Nashville) single explodes. The Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood pairing has turned into gold. Together they make beautiful music in “Somethin’ Bad” (RCA Nashville) and radio just loves it. Sam Hunt is fast becoming a Country star. His “Leave The Night On” (MCA Nashville) seems to be showing up on everybody’s list and for good reason, it’s just that good. Rick Monroe is back at radio and that could be a good thing. His new “Fire’s Out” (MRG) keeps getting attention so you may want to spend some time with this one to be sure. Dierks Bentley keeps getting lots of attention for his “Drunk On A Plane” (Capitol Nashville) but another track is also surfacing so we have to wonder what the label is up to at this point. Cerrito is getting some spin action at Country and for good reasons. His new “Manana” (Checo) is becoming the “one to watch” so don’t just watch it – add it. Hicks is also getting some stellar action at Country radio. Their new single “Hayride” (MTS) is pulling in some fast add action and is an indicator that something good is going on here. I hope you all enjoy our Summer Special and that you have the best Summer ever.

C arrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of “American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into a promotion that is sure to please her fan following. S ony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which was released in May. U sing the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival.

“ Carrie Underwood is always looking for ways to connect with her fans,” said Gary Overton, Sony Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans something special and provide a cool, unique connection between the artist and audience. Sony Music Nashville is excited to watch this fun idea unfold and is eager to partner with Aurasma on other future campaigns.” U pon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010. “ Carrie Underwood is a proven superstar. We are thrilled to partner with Sony Music Nashville to help increase the momentum of her smash album Blown Away,” said Jennifer Rapp, general manager of Aurasma. “By leveraging augmented reality to bridge the physical and virtual worlds, Sony gives the fans something exclusive and special, helping to keep fans connected and Carrie in the spotlight.” T he free Aurasma app runs on iPhone 3GS (and above), iPad2 (and above), and high-powered Android devices. Y esterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! 32

Billy Ray Cyrus ‘Hopefully, People Learn From My Mistakes’ Since 1992 and the success of a song called “Achy Breaky Heart,” Billy Ray Cyrus has learned all about busy schedules. Over two decades later, there is no sign the Kentuckian is slowing down. The singer is promoting his latest album “Change My Mind,” and has also just released his autobiography “Hillbilly Heart.” “It’s a very busy time,” he told Billboard over the weekend at Nashville’s Parnassus Books. “There was a song that I had a record on a few years ago called ‘Busy Man.’ I have found myself living those words in keeping up with all of this,” he said, referring to his top five smash from 1999. Cyrus goes into great detail about his youth in the book, with one memory concerning his father being a recurring theme of Hillbilly Heart. “Well, he gave me a lot of advice, but chapter one is called ‘Life Ain’t Fair.’ It’s the story about when my mom and dad were getting a divorce. I knew everything was messed up and different in my family as opposed to other families in Flatwoods, KY. One day, I asked him why things were like they were, and he pulled over, looked me in the eye, and said ‘Son, life ain’t fair. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can move on.” Cyrus said he has replayed that conversation several times since whenever life’s highway has gotten rough. “Sometimes, you’ve just got to call it like it is, and do the best you can do with what you’ve been given. You work hard at your goals and your dreams. The book is dedicated to the dreamers. That’s another thing I learned from my dad -- no dream is too big to achieve. You’ve just got to chart a course, set a plan, and vow to pursue it.” When asked what he would like readers to take from the book, he says “There were a couple of times in my life where the rocket ride got a little fast, and you pray for purpose. I think it was a bit of my purpose to write this book. Hopefully, people might learn from my mistakes. I’m very honest about some of the ones I’ve made. If I can save someone from making some of the same ones, I think that’s the rhyme and the reason of the story. There’s also a few things I did right, and I think that’s something that some folks can borrow from and maybe help them to reach their goals and dreams.” He also talks about the stories of many of his biggest hits, including “Ready, Set, Don’t Go,” a 2007 duet with daughter Miley. “It was about those moments that you have in life as a daddy, where you see your little girl grow up. You think you’re ready to let go, and you prepare yourself for that moment, and you’re set. Then, as she’s saying goodbye, you want to reach out, hold her a bit longer and say ‘Don’t go.’ I still live it every day. I’ve got another little girl who just turned thirteen, Noah, so I’m living it through her. A lot of daddies and daughters have written me stories about that song, and how the song was played at weddings or graduations. One dad wrote me about taking his daughter to join the Army, and they listened to the song before they got out of the car. Things like that are the reason why I bought a guitar and started a band. The music touched somebody’s life, and it tends to make sense.” Having went through the whirlwind of “Achy Breaky” and “Hannah Montana,” the singer says “I’m at a pretty good spot in my life. I’ve written a bunch of new songs for an album I’m going to record this summer. I start a new movie the first week of May called ‘Like A Country Song’ that is filmed here in Nashville. I filmed a pilot with Randy Travis called ‘Still The King’ -- I play a dysfunctional Elvis impersonator who becomes a preacher. Randy’s the sheriff. It’s a great story, and I think it will find a home pretty soon. I love acting, being a singer / songwriter, and being here in Music City at this time in my life -- coming full circle with the book is quite unique.” 40
