2012

It’s our favorite time of year here at New Music Weekly and just about everywhere in the USA. That means “tour time” for many with abundant music festivals and concerts filled with great artists and bands. Indie artists are also out and about using the good weather to make their way to cities and towns to share their music with radio and audiences from Los Angles, Nashville to New York. Radio is also filled with some great music and that is helping to keep the spirit of the summer “alive and well”. For most of this year things seemed pretty mellow around here with everything moving at a rather slow pace. Suddenly as this time of year approached it’s as if a water valve was opened at full throttle and this huge gush has occurred. To validate this point, all you have to do is look at the charts and activity right here in this publication. It’s an overview of just how busy things have suddenly become. Were artists and bands just holding on to all the good stuff until now? It appears that most of them finally decided to let all of the material out at the very same time. No angle to this underscores the “flood of music” is better than over on our Country charts. Now that the major labels are leaning towards New Music Weekly as a vehicle to get their artists out there, the field has been a very crowded one indeed. If you combine those artists with the many independent artist and bands, the crowd soon became quite a big one at that. For most of the numbers in the past it would normally take 300+ spins to make the “up and coming” chart at Country. Over the past two to three weeks however, it’s taken well over 600+ spins to show up even at the bottom of that chart. That is just how crowded that field has become and we’re doing our very best over here to let as many people on the page as we most possibly can but it’s been rough. Many of our artists and bands use the charts of New Music Weekly to their advantage. Whether it’s posting them on-line or filling up their promotion package, many are using their chart activity to book shows and events. When you become a chart artist here at NMW, you are now an official “national act”. Bands and artists need to use that important activity to help move to the next level. You also can now make your case to get picked up by a label if that’s in fact what you want to do. For some it helps them go to investors so that many can keep their own indie label in business. If you missed the boat for the Summer of 2012, this might be the to set your plans in motion for next year. Early planning can be the key to a successful run. Plan to get your single out in the early spring, build your numbers and your profile and get to work. There are a number of stations that plan events and concerts and you can be a part of that action as long as you plan it all with enough time to make it all happen. Some of our artists are also looking to places out of the USA and have found great success in European outlets. This also might be the time to re-build your team. From publicity, talent bookers to radio promoters, a strong and solid team can and will make all the difference in moving you to the very next level. Here at New Music Weekly we continue to provide many of the “tools of the trade” you need. From the STS tracking, our Future Hits compilations, digital services such as Airplay Access to our printed magazine that provides plenty of vital information, you’ve got it all here in one place. Let’s make the Summer of 2012 a “one to remember”.

Everybody is raving about Carly Rae Jepsen and for good reason. She was born November 20, 1985 in Mission, British Columbia. She attended Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, BC when one of her teachers encouraged her to audition for Canadian Idol. “On Season 5, I ended up being ushered by my high school drama teacher to go to the audition. It was one of those things that I didn’t ever expect to be the thing that worked, but it really was the first level of exposure that I ever had,” she said in an interview. Jepsen finished third in the competition and was signed to Fontana and Maple Music after completing the Idol tour. She poured her time and energy for the writing and recording of her first album with producer Ryan Stewart. Her debut album was titled “Tug of War” and released three months after the singles. Ramsay would also later contribute to her debut hit single “Call Me Maybe”. What really changed it all for Carly was a trip by young superstar Justin Bieber to her area. Him and his entourage that included Selena Gomez, were hearing her song all over the radio while on a visit to Toronto. Justin immediately put out a call to get in touch with the young singer and the rest as they say is pure…“history”. We’ll be following the continued success of Carly Rae Jepsen right here all year long at NMW! 3

Rihanna is set with another smash at the Top40 format. “Where Have You Been” (DefJam/IDJMG) is the jam that many of our music and program directors approve of. Recording artist Maddy Rodriguez appears to have a huge hit single in the works. The word is out about “All The Wasted Time” (Fontana North) and so far so very good. We’ve also been getting some solid reports regarding the band Graffiti6. Their single “Free” (Capitol) is the one that is doing the trick for them. We’ll see how it all plays out in the weeks to come during this red hot music summer. Demi Lovato has carved out quite a nice music career for herself. She’s now taking the single “Give Your Heart A Break” (Hollywood) out for a spin and the reviews on this one are stellar. Katy Perry is still rocking strong during this summer of 2012. Her new hit single “Wide Awake” (Capitol) is one of her best to date and it comes just in time for her movie so the timing is quite perfect for Miss Perry. Trey Songz can add another gem to the roster. “Heart Attack” (Atlantic/WEA) is quite the single and the calls are all over on this one. Usher is back at Top40 with another real masterpiece. “Scream” (RCA/RLG) is Usher at his best and look for some great numbers to build on this one. Kelly Clarkson is back at the format with a solid piece of music. “Dark Side” (RCA/RLG). Is the one to watch for. Look for some big weeks ahead on this gem as well. One of our favorite Top40 artists ala Pitbull is off to a very bright Summer. “Back In Time” (Mr 305/Polo Grounds/RCA). Carly Rae Jepsen is as hot as any newcomer on the music planet these days. “Call Me Maybe” (School Boy/Interscope) is the one that is making her a household name all over the music world. Calvin Harris has teamed up with NeYo for a solid winner at the format. “Let’s Go” (Ultra) is the jam that is starting to pop like a real Summer hit. “We Are Young” (Fueled By Ramen) by Fun featuring Janelle Monae is still quite a lot of big “fun” for your listening pleasure. Matchbox 20 are back on Top40 radio and make no mistake about that. “She’s So Mean” (Emblem/Atlantic) is the one that is rocking strong. Tommy Roe is back on the radio and what a nice surprise. His “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle) is setting both the Top40 and AC40 “on fire” and watch for some huge weeks ahead for Tommy. Evafe is powering up to the top of the charts. “Oxygen” (Fuego Music Group) is the debut smash from this amazing new artists. Erica Nicole is having a most impressive run with her “What You Think About Us” (Heaven) single. Jennifer Lopez has teamed up with Flo Rida for the perfect summer hit. “Goin In” (Island) is the track you will want to spin over and over. If you don’t believe me, just ask some of our radio programmers and they will set you straight. Recording artist and rap star Dynamite Jonez has been “on fire” with “Ignition” (Q4 Music Group). One of our favorite new artists in Ron Gallucci has a good thing going. “Something About You” (RGM) is a very strong single from this super talented guy. Will I Am has teamed up with Eva Simons for the bright and powerful “This Is Love” (Interscope). Bob Gordon is setting the Top40 world “on fire” with his new “Booty Rock”. It’s taken from our recent Future Hits volume #41 and it’s a solid hit for Bob. Alex Clare continues to amaze with “Too Close” (Universal Republic). Steve Northeast is also moving strong with his “Sand And Stone” (Tidal). Greg Wallace is also rocking with his amazing “Take Another Chance On Luck” (Riff Ranch). Jimmy White is a very big hit with “Warm” (828) and watch for big things ahead. I’ll have more for you on the greatest hits at Top40 next time with here.

Train starts the summer out in a very big way at radio with yet another gem. “50 Ways To Say Goodbye” (Columbia/Sony) is their latest and our music and program directors are all over this in a very big way. Matchbox 20 is also picking up a number of believers from our AC40 panel. “She’s So Mean” (Emblem/Atlantic) seems to be getting raves from listeners and programmers alike. Young and super talented Carly Rae Jepsen has got an amazing story underway. First discovered and signed by Justin Bieber, her debut single “Call Me Maybe” (School Boy/Interscope) is a major hit for her and there will be much more to come from this amazing new talent. Gotye has teamed up with Kimbra for what appears to be a very big record at the format. “Somebody That I Used To Know” (Universal Republic) is the one that everybody is talking about. Watch for some big weeks ahead for this one. Jason Mraz is also having a stellar summer so far. “I Won’t Give Up” (Atlantic/WEA) is the track that is pulling in some major calls from listeners all over the USA. Maroon 5 has teamed up with recording artist Wiz Khalifa for a great summer single. “Payphone” (Octone/A&M) is the one that is making magic all over radio. Watch for this single to hit the top of many radio charts in the weeks to come. Katy Perry has a real winner on her hands just in time for the release of her brand new movie. “Wide Awake” (Capitol) is the track that is keeping her on the top of her game and she has a major support system of industry friends and fans to assist her in the current venture. Norah Jones is back and that’s always a welcome sign for us who have followed her career. “Happy Pills” (Blue Note/EMC) from her new album is the one that is keeping her name and music where it needs to be. Colbie Caillat also continues her “winning ways” at radio. Her “Favorite Song” (Universal Republic) is fast becoming everybody’s “favorite song” and for good reason. Tommy Roe is back at radio and in a very big way. “Devil’s Soul Pile” (Airebelle) is his latest and it has rocked the top of our “most added” chart for the past few weeks. Look for some big weeks ahead on this gem as radio really appears to be loving this single “big time”. The Script is back with a great single. “If You Ever Come Back” (Epic/Sony) reminds us why they are one of our favorite bands at this format. Ron Gallucci has another solid winner on his hands. “Something About You” (RGM) has been extremely well received from day one and it’s now moving to the top of our charts in record time. Recording artist Steve Northeast has one of the best songs on the radio. “Sand & Stone” (Tidal) is fast becoming a real favorite from many of our music and program directors. Evafe, our recent NMW cover-girl, is “on fire” with the debut single “Oxygen” (Fuego Music Group). Dynamite Jonez has been running strong with his “Ignition” (Q4 Music Group) single and that is no surprise to many of us. The band Fun is getting some solid play out there in radio-land. “Some Nights” (Fueled By Ramen) is the one you need to pay some special attention to. Recording artist Greg Wallace has a solid hit on his hands. “Take Another Chance On Luck” (Riff Ranch) is the track that is making magic for him. It’s been great to see just how strong Jimmy White has become. His current single “Warm” (828) has never had a bad week since its release. Joey Canyon continues to work his magic at radio. His “Lonely Love” (Glo-Dot) single is a huge hit on most of our formats. Singer and songwriter Marsha Jewell also has a big record on her hands. “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) is making magic all over radio. Recording artist Emil is basking in the glow of great success. His brilliant “Since You Left” (Caper) has hit #1 on many of our charts and a big congrats goes out to him and his stellar team. He’ll be in Los Angeles this week performing concerts at the Whiskey and other venues and we’ll be there to cover him “in action”. I’ll have more on Emil and the best radio stars at AC when we return our very next special issue.

ALL ROADS

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life. Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again. NMW - JULY 13, 2012

to get involved in the acting world. They go f**king nuts!’ During his turbulent career history Ozzy developed addictions to drugs and alcohol. He has done things he is not proud of while taking mind altering substances. However, he believes there is a good reason why he is still alive and a respected figure in the music industry ‘I’m an alcoholic drug addict,’ Ozzy stated. ‘The one thing I refused to do was take that sh*t onstage with me.’

CMA Music Festival set a new attendance record in 2012 with daily attendance topping 71,000 fans, a 9.2 percent increase over the 65,000 in attendance in 2011 and a sell out for the third consecutive year at LP Field. Tickets for 2013 CMA Music Festival, which will be held Thursday through Sunday June 6-9, are on sale now. The increase was attributed to expanded seating at LP Field for the nightly concerts and mild temperatures that drove increased attendance in the free event and concert areas downtown. “Third time’s the charm and to achieve a sell out for a third straight year and increase attendance says a lot about the strength of this event, the dedication of our fans, the support of our industry and local community, and the popularity of our music and artists,” said Steve Moore, CMA Chief Executive Officer. Attendance figures for 2012 include four-day ticket packages, promotional and single night tickets, as well as attendance in non-ticketed free areas and events. In all, more than 450 artists performed more than 200 hours of concerts.Week-long mild temperatures in Nashville resulted in increased attendance in the numerous free areas including The Buckle, Fan Alley, public events, and concert venues. In fact, there was record attendance on Friday and Saturday at Chevrolet Riverfront Park with more than 25,000 fans attending the free concerts throughout each day on the sloping bank of the Cumberland River. Crowds for the new BIC® Soleil Bella® Beach Stage were strong and attendance at the Bud Light Stage on the Bridgestone Plaza increased over 2011. The new BMI Stage at LP Field was bustling each evening as crowds entered the stadium for the nightly concerts.

Coldplay will release a six-part comic book series about ‘Mylo Xyloto’. The story was written and conceived by Mark Osborne of Kung-Fu Panda and SpongeBob Square Pants fame. In a statement Coldplay revealed, ‘Three years ago we had an idea with our friend Mark Osborne about a character called Mylo Xyloto ‘ ‘xylo’ as in xylophone, ‘to’ as in toe. Gradually Mylo’s story and universe came together and this ended up providing the backdrop for the album and tour. Now we’re proud to announce that early next year the story is going to come out as a six-part comic. We hope you like it. It was fun making it.’ Said Mark Osborne: ‘The comic is the latest expression of a music-driven feature animated film that the band and I started developing several years ago. It is the story of Mylo Xyloto, a young Silencer on the front lines of a war against sound and color in the world of Silencia. Mylo discovers that the enemy he’s been trained to hate his whole life might not be the enemy after all. There will hopefully be many, many connections for people who have heard the album. I am beyond thrilled with the way it’s turned out.’ The first issue was released this week for the San Diego Comic-Con International event. The six comics will be released monthly until February 2013.

Ozzy Osbourne: Rockers are schizophrenic

George Michael & Boy George

Ozzy Osbourne believes rock stars are ‘like schizophrenics’. The 63-yearold music legend has been in the rock ‘n’ roll industry for over 40 years. He claims that entertainers will go ‘crazy’ if they don’t separate normal life from their onstage persona. “Performers are like schizophrenics,” the Black Sabbath frontman told Kerrang! magazine. ‘When you’re onstage that’s what you do, but when you are offstage you’ve got to be different.’ Ozzy has struggled when it came to juggling his career and personal life. ‘It got me in all kinds of f**king trouble,’ he confessed. The crazy antics that rock stars are known for is a subject Ozzy is familiar with. He thinks that other people involved in the entertainment industry also behave in this way, but it is less documented. ‘Rock ‘n’ roll is bad for that stuff,’ he added. ‘But if you think that’s bad, you want NMW - JULY 13, 2012

Collaborate On Tribute Album Natasha Antoinette Anastasiades, a promising singer-songwriter on the verge of stardom, was killed on March 6 2005 in a car crash. She left a body of work which her music producer father Mario has spent an astonishing 7 years completing. ‘I made a promise, after she died, that it would be released,’ says Mario Anastasiades. ‘And I have spent 7 years trying to keep this promise. It’s to encourage other parents to do something positive, become a spokesperson.’ The Natasha Tribute album is released June 25 on Rise International Music, and has been produced by Mario and Chaz Dabat for The Natasha Foundation and the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Crossing styles and genres, from R’n’B to ballads, dance tracks to cover versions, it’s an unprecedented combination of original compositions, collaborations,

vocal donations and inclusions from a galaxy of stars. Mario coordinated the production of the album with the help of his friend Chaz Dabat who produced it. Standout tracks include the hook-laden mid-tempo ballad and future single, ‘Yell Cut’ (featuring Marcella Detroit and Antony Costa), the slinky eastern-tinged hip hop of ‘Follow My Lead’ (Marc Nelson), and the sprightly ‘In 2 U’, which features Natasha’s ex band mate Lara Copcutt. Elsewhere, there’s a heartfelt cover of the Cat Stevens classic ‘Can’t Keep It in’, and two tracks produced by the Berman Brothers (‘Who Let The Dogs Out’?) ‘ the ballad ‘Without You’ and smash hit Britney-esque anthem ‘Breaking All The Rules’ . Almost all the tracks contain Natasha’s vocals, but some, such as George Michael’s ‘Edith & The Kingpin’ and the fantastic ‘Natasha’s American Heart’ (Boy George),) were gifts from the artists themselves. The album ends with ‘Heavenly Star,’ a moving paean to his daughter written and performed by Mario himself. Mario is a former singer-songwriter who scored a hit in the early 90s with the Top 5 EMIsigned dance act Hyper Go Go, as well as going on to be signed to BMG as part of Latin Touch. He managed his daughter Natasha and three times they came close to a deal, before her untimely death.

Lisa Marie Presley: Dad Elvis’ Music Is In Me

Lisa Marie Presley reveals that her late father Elvis’ music was ‘embedded in her very young.’ The 44-year-old songwriter is deeply influenced by the musical works of her dad. Lisa acquired his ear for sound in her youth. ‘I think that his music is probably embedded in me very young, because that’s what I knew and heard the most,’ she told Extra. Although her father remains a deep source of inspiration, Lisa is intent on creating unique melodies. ‘I wasn’t trying in any way to sound like him specifically. It’s just in my genetic code that he will definitely be influencing me in how I hear and think musically,’ she explained. Lisa debuted her new album Storm and Grace in May. The musician spoke previously about her creative process for the record. ‘Just over two years ago, I went to England to attempt to write another record after finding myself in a considerably disheartened and uninspired state creatively,’ Lisa said in a press release. ‘Over an eightmonth period, I wrote 30 songs. I was fortunate to be able to write with some incredible artists and singers.’

Jennifer Hudson Desperate For Baby Girl

Jennifer Hudson wants a baby daughter “so bad”. The songstress has been engaged to pro wrestler David Otunga for almost four years and they

have two-year-old David Jr. together. Jennifer is desperate to add a little girl to her brood, and plans to extend their family once their son is a bit older. “It’s always been my dream to have a boy first and then a little girl so he’d be the big brother,” she told Life & Style. “I want one so bad! “Give me another year or two. I used to say when David Jr. is 4, but he’s almost 4 now so maybe 5 or 6 because this is coming too soon!” Jennifer says David Jr. is just as eager to expand their family. The stunning star says her young son is looking forward to having a younger sibling he can take care of. “He says, ‘Mommy, I want a baby sister,’ every day,” Jennifer smiled. Jennifer also revealed that she already has the perfect name for a daughter, but playfully teased she “isn’t telling!”

Rihanna: Love is priceless

Rihanna says falling in love is a “priceless” feeling, although getting hurt was the worst “pain in [her] life”. The stunning songstress is famed for her tumultuous relationship with R&B star Chris Brown. The couple split in 2009 after Chris assaulted her, resulting in him being sentenced to probation, community service and counselling. Rihanna has described the feelings she experienced throughout her high-profile relationship. ‘When I was in love, I fell so hard. The way it made me feel was priceless,’ she revealed in the August edition of Harper’s Bazaar. ‘And in a blink of an eye my whole life changed. Everything that I knew was different. I never thought I’d feel that pain in my life. I’m afraid of feeling that again.’ Rihanna is famously rebellious, and regularly shocks with her song lyrics and fashion choices. The 24year-old superstar insists she holds back where her personal life is concerned though. ‘[I’m] rebellious through my music, through my fashion, tattoos, and my hair,’ she added. ‘I have been conservative in my love life. it’s pretty much non-existent. If I come across someone who I find really cool, I’ll hang out. But the minute I find that we’re getting too close I just - I don’t let people in.’ Since splitting from Chris, Rihanna has seemingly enjoyed a colourful love life, having been linked to a series of men including Drake and Ashton Kutcher.

Jack White: I’m Immune To Noise

Jack White says he is ‘immune’ to noise. The rocker is often surprised by how loud his own gigs are because his hearing has been damaged over the years. The White Stripes musician never protects his ears because he can’t hear what he is doing on the guitar, which has affected his hearing over the years. ‘There was a White Stripes tour, which is probably one of the least loudest bands 21

MUSIC BIZ I would think because there are not too many people on stage. My monitor guy came over while we were playing at sound check and he held a decibel meter in front of my monitors and turned it around and showed me the number, which was 136 and that day I thought it wasn’t that bad!’ he told BBC Radio 1. ‘I think I luckily got immune to it a few decades ago. I used to try and put ear protection in, but I couldn’t hear my guitar tone, I couldn’t hear what was going on and I would always pull them out three songs in. Even if it makes me go deaf, I have to know what it sounds like.’ Jack also revealed he pushes himself to perform when he is feeling unwell. The Seven Nation Army star explained that a voice affected by illness can create a whole different sound, for the benefit of the listeners. ‘Say if you had a session booked early in the morning to play a song on the radio and your voice is gone, say ‘No, let’s go do it. It’ll be something different’. I’ll lower my voice an octave and the version will be different. They’re circumstances that might unlock something new,’ he added.

Lady Gaga Still In Good Romance

Lady Gaga and her boyfriend Taylor Kinney apparently ‘never broke up.’ The couple dated for ten months but then rumours of a split surfaced in May. However, In Touch reports that the Bad Romance singer and her Vampire Diaries beau are still head over heels in love but just had some geographical issues. ‘They never broke up,’ an insider told the publication. ‘She’s been on a worldwide tour, so they can’t be together as much as they would like.’ ‘But they talk multiple times a day, and she even wears a ring that Taylor gave her on a necklace.’ The loved up twosome were seen enjoying a cosy time on the balcony of her hotel in Australia over the weekend. Taylor and Gaga apparently plan to work around her schedule as much as they can and see each other whenever possible in a bid to keep their romance alive.

Yoko Ono Sending Paul McCartney A Hidden Message?

Reid and Neil Perry, of The Band Perry, took time out of their busy CMA Music Fest schedule to attend a special reception held by NRA Country. The event was hosted to thank artists and members of the country music industry who have participated in various NRA Country events this year so far. Reid and Neil joined Blake Shelton, Craig Morgan, and other celebrities, who competed in the ACM Sporting Clays Shoot held by NRA Country during the ACM Awards earlier this year in Las Vegas, NV. The event benefitted Wounded Warrior Project, The Folds of Honor Foundation and the Nellis Air Force Base Youth Programs. Yoko Ono has sent Sir Paul McCartney a Happy Birthday greeting for his 70th birthday but is there a hidden message in the greeting? In a post on Facebook Yoko wrote, ‘Dear @PaulMcCartney Happy, Happy Birthday, Paul! Lots and lots of love, yoko x’. She included the image of Paul’s ‘Ram’ album. The ‘Ram’ cover featured a Paul holding a Ram by the horns. The album was released on May 17, 1971. ‘Ram’ came out right at the height of the bitter feud that broke up the Beatles and tore John Lennon and Paul McCartney apart. On September 9, 1971, John Lennon

released ‘Imagine’ and ripped into McCartney with the cutting ‘How Do You Sleep’ but also included a picture of John holding a pig in exactly the same pose as Paul held the Ram. What is Yoko playing at here? After all these years, is the feud still alive?

Madonna Goes On Tour With 200 People

According to reports, she also requests 20 international phone lines backstage and insists on only vegan snacks. Madonna is particular about the look of her dressing room, which must be draped in a particular fabric and filled with white and pale pink roses and lillies, with the stems on each flower trimmed to exactly six inches. After her shows, the singer likes her hotel rooms to be a home-away-from home and has her own furniture shipped into the suites. A source told InTouch Weekly magazine: “Madonna requires all furniture be removed from the rooms and replaced with her own pieces that she has shipped in.” Madonna also has five clones of herself and a body double for her 15-year-old dancer daughter Lourdes following advice from her father Carlos Leon. A source said recently: “Carlos suggested hiring a Lourdes lookalike to take the pressure off the teenager.”

Denise Richards Splits From Richie Sambora

Denise Richards and Richie Sambora have reportedly ended their on-again, off-again relationship. The pair rekindled their romance earlier this year following a prior romance between 2006 and 2007. But Celebuzz claims that just before their scheduled appearance at the CMT Music Awards last week, Denise and the Bon Jovi rocker had a huge fight. ‘It’s over,’ an insider told the site. ‘They had an epic argument in Nashville and Denise told Richie she couldn’t continue the relationship any longer.’ The 52-year-old had been due to present onstage during the awards show but mysteriously cancelled at the last minute. A source said that Richie claimed to have an issue with his 14-year-old Ava back in LA but later said he was ill. Denise and Richie first got together after he split from Heather Locklear and she had just ended her marriage to Charlie Sheen.

Julianne Hough is elated about Miley Cyrus’ recent engagement to beau Liam Hemsworth. The 22-yearold The Hunger Games actor proposed to the 19-year-old former Disney star last month, with the pair announcing their happy news this week. Julianne, who is currently dating host Ryan Seacrest, has known Miley for years. She can’t wait to see Miley and Liam take their relationship to the next level. ‘I am so happy for them,’ Julianne told OK! magazine. ‘They are going to make beautiful babies.’ Liam popped the question with a 3.5 carat diamond ring designed by Neil Lane. The band is gold and boasts floral patterns cut into it, with small diamonds scattered throughout. The main stone is cushion cut and an antique. ‘It was hand-cut around 1880 or 1890 and it’s unique and in its original form,’ the designer told People. ‘At that time no two diamonds were alike, as they were all hand-cut, so it’s fascinating to look at because it hasn’t been re-cut to look contemporary over the years. I find that really romantic.’

Elvis To Reappear As A Hologram Apparently we’re going to see Hologram Elvis in the near future, as well as a celebrity duets album. Rolling Stone report that, following the overwhelming success of the Tupac hologram, the creators have hammered out a deal to bring the world Hologram Elvis. Digital Domain Media Group are the organization that whipped up the Hologram Tupac for Coachella (which isn’t technically a hologram, but a ‘Pepper’s Ghost’-style visual illusion) and they have now teamed up with Core Media Group, which owns the rights to the likeness of the King. Digital Domain Media Group will create a virtual Elvis which will be ready for films, television, and concerts. Surely he’ll be selling us Blue Loo, Accor Hotels and dog food soon enough. Elvis has appeared in a stageshow of his hits, but that was merely as a video backdrop. This time, we’ll get to see those hips swivel in 3D. Now which era Elvis will they pick? Core Media Group has hinted that Elvis may appear in a drama series, and they’re planning to construct some sort of celebrity duets album. Relive the Coachella Hologram Tupac action below. We’ll remind you that it contains naughty words.

Taylor Swift ‘has Mayer drama’

Taylor Swift and her ex John Mayer created ‘drama central’ when they dined at the same restaurant recently. The singing stars had a brief romance, which Taylor apparently referred to in her 2010 track Dear John. John has hit out at his former flame for documenting their fling in a song and the pair almost came face-to-face at the Tower Bar in The Sunset Tower Hotel, West Hollywood. According to New York Post, 22-year-old Taylor was about to be seated at the venue when she noticed John was at a table nearby ‘ so the country singer asked to be moved to a different area. ‘Taylor very visibly - in front of the entire restaurant demanded to be moved to the other side,’ a source told the publication. ‘The bar’s usually an oasis of calm and privacy for celebrities and power players, but this was drama central.’ Other famous faces to witness the incident included Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield and director Nancy Meyers. In a Rolling Stone interview released this week, 34-year-old John blasted Taylor for penning the unflattering song Dear John. “[Dear John is] cheap songwriting. It made me feel terrible. Because I didn’t deserve it,’ he said. “It was a really lousy thing to do. ‘I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught offguard. It really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down.” NMW - JULY 13, 2012

Usher: Dance Moves Are Code Usher says the way he dances is from a secret “code of communication” he used in his youth. The singer was talking about the inspiration behind his famously slick moves andrevealedthatmanyofthemweredeveloped while hanging out with peers on the streets. Usher explained that dance and fashion were used as signals in his neighbourhood where he grew up. ‘Michael Jackson. There were plenty of people who were an inspiration,’ he told Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O when asked who his dance idols were. ‘But it was also part of my lifestyle in the 80s and 90s because that was the way we communicated. It was kind of like a code; you know what I mean? People use communication when they talk, and our way to communicate was our different styles, our clothing, the way we wore our hair and the way we danced in the street - all of those things.’ Usher also spoke about the recent internet hoax which spread rumours of his death online in April 2012. The star revealed how his plan to ignore the claims almost backfired because his dignified silence worried fans that he might have died. ‘I was as dumbfounded by it as anyone, it was just crazy. I didn’t respond to it at first because it obviously wasn’t true, but as the day went on people became more afraid because they hadn’t heard from me - I hadn’t really talked on my Twitter or Instagram, so I decided to post a picture and that was it. But it’s crazy how people can say things and put things online that are not true and there’s no ramifications for doing it,’ he said. NMW - JULY 13, 2012

Marsha Jewell Takes Her Country/Rock Songs to Europe Marsha Jewell, chart toppingAmerican singer/songwriter, is jetting into Scotland for two weeks in July to lay the groundwork for her first British and European Tour singing her country rock hit songs. Some of Marsha’s roots are in Scotland on the Elkins side of her family, so she thinks that this is the perfect place to launch her October tour. She’s in very good company! The great Johnny Cash was directly descended from King Malcolm IV of Scotland, and a whole lot of other stars can claim Scottish ancestry, like Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Presley and Glen Campbell. While in Scotland, Marsha will be putting together a band for her European Tour, not to mention recording a video of her chart topping “Country Cowboy. ”This will be the fulfilment of another ambition,” says Marsha. “I feel so happy taking my music live to the British stage. “Her first stop will be the famous Oran Mor Venue in Glasgow where her first ever Scottish gig will take place. The club has hosted musical stars such as Tim Robbins, Joss Stone, and Amy Winehouse and has the reputation of having an appreciative audiences. Marsha confirms her satisfaction at the choice of venue . “Oran Mor is Gaelic for ‘The Big Song,’ so how can I resist opening in a club with such a beautiful name?” Penciled in for October are dates in London, Dublin, Berlin and Paris so it will certainly means that Marsha Jewell is becoming an International Star.

The series “Second Generations” brings together the children of country music legends such as Marty Robbins, Conway Twitty, Faron Young, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Roger Miller, Johnny Russell, Hank Williams, Dottie West, to share stories and the songs their parents made famous. Excerpts from “Second Generations,” will return by popular demand to RFD-TV throughout the month of July and will feature appearances by the Michael Twitty (son of Conway Twitty), Robyn Young (son of Faron Young), Jett Williams (daughter of Hank Williams), Georgette Jones (daughter of George Jones and Tammy Wynette), Dean Miller (son of Roger Miller), Ronnie Robbins (son of Marty Robbins), and many more.

SoCal alt-rockers The Dirty Heads are set to celebrate the release of their top 20 album Cabin By The Sea with a visit to ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight, which airs at Midnight in most markets. The appearance will feature the first-ever nationally televised performance of their hit “Spread Too Thin” from JKL’s famed Bud Light Outdoor Stage. Cabin, which features guest Del the Funky Homosapien, KyMani Marley and Rome, and Matisyahu (with whom the band is currently on a co-headline North American tour) was globally released on Five Seven Music.

Miranda Lambert is taking her summer of 2012 quite seriously. “Fastest Girl In Town” (RCA/RLG) is her latest and what a great song this is. Watch for some big weeks ahead on this gem. Tim McGraw is getting off to a stellar start with his new label. “Right Back Atcha Babe” from his new home in Big Machine/Universal is another major hit record set to explode all over radio. It’s so great to see the name Casey James on our charts. Many of you may know him from American Idol but we know him for his new hit single “Crying On A Suitcase” (BNA/RLG) and it appears to be making bold and beautiful moves just about everywhere its being played. Those Zac Brown Band boys are also “on fire”. Many of our music and program directors are raving about their “The Wind” (Southern Ground/Atlantic) single and for good reason. Big & Rich are back and that’s always a good thing. “That’s Why I Pray” (WB/WEA) is their latest offering and with a few extra prayers and adds this one could go “all the way”. I really love the new single from Trace Adkins. “Them Lips” (Show Dog/Universal) is one of his best to date and watch for some magical numbers on this one in the weeks to come. The act known to many as Love And Theft have a good thing going and make no mistake about that. “Angel Eyes” (BNA/Sony) is the one that everybody is talking about. We’ll see how it all plays out in the coming weeks but from what we see and hear it’s going to be just fine. The Band Perry continues to work their magic all over radio. “Postcard From Paris” (Republic Nashville) has been a slow but steady climber and that’s just the way this family band seems to like it. Recording artist Jana Kramer is off to a stellar start at the format. “Why Ya Wanna” (Elektra/WEA) is a very strong and interesting track and just as long as it doesn’t get lost in this extremely crowded field it should do quite well. Bobby Dean is back with another gem. “Me And George Strait” (Lamon) has been a winner from the first week out and the numbers are building strong for this one. Little Big Town have a good thing and make no mistake about that. “Pontoon” (Capitol) is the one that’s allowing them to sail on to many music charts all over the USA. Blake Shelton is as hot as any Country boy can be. His new “Over” (WB/WEA) continues to win the hearts and minds of many radio programmers and listeners. Lady Antebellum are keeping their light shining bright as ever. “Wanted You More” (Capitol) is the one that is making it all happen for them this summer. Kenny Chesney is rocking the free world with his stellar “Come Over” (BNA/Sony) single. It’s great to see Christine Van Hoy with a new hit single. “You = Home” (Big 7) could be her next #1 single. “Things You Don’t Grow Out Of” from Taylor Made (Little General) is one of their best to date and look for good things to come from this single. Rick Monroe is back with “Crazy Not To” (Render) and how about that. Maddy Rodriguez keeps pulling in action for “All The Wasted Time” (Fontana North). Gwen Sebastian has a new hit single in “Met Him In A Motel Room” (Flying Island). Kelly Parkes is also “on the move” with her new hit “All Cried Out”. Jimmy White is making moves at Country with his “Warm” (828) single. Joey Canyon continues to “rock the house” with “Lonely Love” (Glo-Dot) and good for him. Singer/songwriter Marsha Jewell is ever so strong with her “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) single. Heidi Newfield “Why’d You Have To Be So Good” (Sidewalk). Tobi Gordon “The Eagle” (Platinum Plus). TJ Maddux “Hotter Than Fireworks” (AddieB). A big congrats to Erica Nicole for her #1 success with “What You Think About Us” (Heaven) produced by Michael Lloyd. Lee Brice “Hard To Love” (Curb). Keith Urban’s “For You” (Capitol) is a real winner. Carrie Underwood is still a recording artist to contend with. She’s getting plenty of spin action for her “Good Girl” (Arista/RLG) single that makes her American Idol family proud. I’ll have more good things from Country next time right here my friends.

C arrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of “American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into a promotion that is sure to please her fan following.

S ony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which was released in May. U sing the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival. “ Carrie Underwood is always looking for ways to connect with her fans,” said Gary Overton, Sony Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans something special and provide a cool, unique connection between the artist and audience. Sony Music Nashville is excited to watch this fun idea unfold and is eager to partner with Aurasma on other future campaigns.” U pon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010. “ Carrie Underwood is a proven superstar. We are thrilled to partner with Sony Music Nashville to help increase the momentum of her smash album Blown Away,” said Jennifer Rapp, general manager of Aurasma. “By leveraging augmented reality to bridge the physical and virtual worlds, Sony gives the fans something exclusive and special, helping to keep fans connected and Carrie in the spotlight.” T he free Aurasma app runs on iPhone 3GS (and above), iPad2 (and above), and high-powered Android devices. Y esterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! NMW - JULY 13, 2012

Dee Hilligoss Strikes a Chord With ‘Too Soon’ Whether it be caring for a loved one, or promoting her music,Dee Hilligoss is in it for the long haul. Currently on the road promoting her new single, “Too Soon,” she is excited about the impact the song has had thus far. “We just released it, and it’s available on iTunes, and we are on about 50 radio stations across the country, and adding more each week. People have really responded great to it,” she says. The song immediately struck a chord with the Indiana native. “It’s something that as soon as I heard, I knew I wanted to cut it. It seems that everyone goes through a struggle in their life, whether it be a divorce, or the loss of a loved one, or a child getting sick, or a challenge that you go through. I think it’s those moments that really define us. We figure out how strong we are as human beings. If we can get through these tough times, that’s what really counts. The song is really motivating to me, and speaks to what I had gone through with my divorce and my son.” And, what she has gone through has been very amazing. “I was singing, dancing, and acting growing up, and had spent time in New York and Los Angeles growing up. In the summer of 2001, I was in the process of moving back to New York City to jump start my career where I had left off. I had my son, and he was two. I was signing a lease on 9/11,” she says, adding that the emotion of the moment made her return home. “I packed up and went back to Indiana. My plan was to go back to New York in the winter of 2002. But, in December, my son was diagnosed with autism.” That was a game changer, the singer says. “At that point, everything stopped and nothing else mattered. I went on a research mission to find out what I needed to know to take care of my son.” When it comes to her earliest musical influences, she sums them up with one-name artists. “There was Dolly, and as I got older in junior high, I was a huge Prince fan. The first concert I ever went to was in the seventh grade at the Indiana State Fair. It was Tiffany, with New Kids On The Block opening for her. You never forget things at that. In my high school years, I listened to more country. I was a huge Travis Tritt fan. Reba. I listened to everything.” Hilligoss has appeared in commercials, on stage, and even on the football field. “I was an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader,” she says gleefully. Getting back on the stage was a course she knew she would have to take. “I knew that as he got better, if it was possible, I had to get back to what I loved. My child is a huge music fan. He loves having his mother sing.”

College radio is “alive and well”, especially for our Summer Music Preview. We’re still getting raves from our latest Future Hits volume #41 and that is music to our ears and eyes. Check out all of the charts in this issue and you will see what a landfall of music mainly from the Independent artist and band arena. We are truly radio’s “only real voice” when it comes to breaking new recording artists. We’ve also got some amazing news to share with you as we keep our College dreams “alive and well”. Here in this column we say to you, “what student loans?” Stone Axe wants to clear the air this Summer. As is typical in rock n’ roll, the rumor mill has been churning and grinding the truth into a semblance of its original form. Since returning from a highly successful tour of the UK and parts of Europe in April, Stone Axe fans have been receiving some mixed messages about the future of these classic rock preservationists. After two Deluxe CD re-issues, a live album, and several years of constant road work, the chief songwriters of the band realized that they needed a break to keep things fresh. So, they put Stone Axe on hiatus for a short while. Look for Stone Axe to return in the near future, but in the meantime, enjoy the bands vast catalog of releases, and look for brand new material from Mos Generator and Cokewulf. Arachnid Amp Cabs USA has something you may need. They do it with a product that combines high-quality carpentry with low prices. Musicians that need equipment can make it through the all phases of a show – set up, performance, and tear down – and do so for years on end. Industry standard amplifier cabinets cost an arm and a leg, and that is for a cabinet made from weak particleboard. Arachnid Amp Cabs combines high-quality carpentry with highquality materials and at a lower price than industry standard. Arachnid Amp Cabs use solid pine and birch plywood to improve strength and acoustics. The cabinets are joined using dovetail joints as well as adhesives for unparalleled strength that will stand the test of time. You can’t beat that with a stick my friends. Viacom Music & Logo Group’s O Music Awards, www. omusicawards.com, and The Flaming Lips have successfully smashed the Guinness World Record previously held by Jay-Z for most concerts performed in multiple cities after a historic road trip through the Mississippi Delta region which now ranks as the most-viewed digitally driven event in Viacom Music & Logo Group history, including generating more than 43 million votes (nearly twice more than the previous record) and producing a US trending topic (#OMA). “To be able to pick up this silly drinking book-after all, Guinness is a beer-this funny book that when I was growing up was a curiosity. To be published alongside the man who ate 22 pounds of his own boogers, beside the woman with the longest toenails or perhaps even to be published beside an individual who has had maybe 1000 cockroaches stuffed into their ears... that, to me, would be one of life’s absurd joys,” said The Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne. Kicking off in Memphis on July 27,The Flaming Lips board a tricked tour bus, Endeavor, and play a series of shows throughout the Mississippi Delta region joined by a diverse lineup of artists including Jackson Browne, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Neon Trees, Gary Clark Jr., and Karmin, Hunter Hayes. Rock icons Duran Duran will have their new live album—A Diamond In The Mind: Duran Duran Live In Concert 2011 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)—streamed live on Spotify for 24 hours, one day prior to its 10 North American release. Recorded live at Manchester, England’s MEN Arena in December of 2011, the career-spanning show, which also includes numerous tracks off the band’s recently released All You Need Is Now CD, is a stunning reminder why original members Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Nick Rhodes continue to be a vibrant artistic force in pop music today. In fact, the band will be representing England when they headline the upcoming BT London Live Opening Ceremony Celebration Concert in Hyde Park, London for the 2012 Summer Olympics. A Diamond In The Mind: Duran Duran Live In Concert 2011 will also be available on DVD, Blu-Ray, CD and in a Special Deluxe Edition that features all three formats plus bonus material, via Eagle Rock Entertainment (North America). Duran Duran is currently wrapping up a world tour in support of All You Need Is Now, with dates in Europe in June and July, and the US throughout August. NMW - JULY 13, 2012
