New Indie Artist &

Band Revolution The New Music Tour Starts Here One of our favorite issues we do every year is the one for our Indie Artists and Bands. When the call comes out for this, the music arrives from all over the world and it’s amazing to see just how many want to get involved. The response comes from Country to Pop artists that realize New Music Weekly is the place to be for help in getting their music out to the masses. This year we have seen an upturn in activity from the independent arena that finds even major label artists jumping ship and starting their own labels. The deals that the majors are offering these days are so bad that it makes no sense to play ball with them until you are set for some type of “position of power”. The timing of this issue could not be more perfect as we just got our shipment of Future Hits in. We are excited about the collection of talent that made its way on to our music sampler. For our radio programmers, please take the time to go through the compilation as you will find songs that fit your format perfectly. We have a solid mix from Mainstream to Country and the talent is better than ever. The response we received regarding Future Hits is at an all-time high, another indicator that the indie world is “alive and well”. For the stars of our compilation (and they are many in number) we welcome you to what we call our “new music revolution.” It’s the start of something magical for many of you. New Music Weekly continues to provide the “tools of the trade” that enables the indie artist and band the opportunity to get a record going in this always rough environment. In our world all radio stations are treated as equals regardless of market size. Many of the music and program directors that are part of the NMW family actually listen to new music. A good number of them are “not” heavily consulted and that gives them the ability to make their own decisions without having a number of people they need to answer to. Our panel is stronger than ever and the station count keeps building each and every year. The charts provided each week via the Spins Tracking System provide the very best information about what is really going on at radio. Only here will you see the perfect mix of both major and independent artists. Each week our phones and computers are buzzing with information and questions from radio stations, programmers and record promotion executives. We try to get to them as quickly as possible and if it takes a bit longer than usual just know that we are “on the case”. You will soon come to understand that this is a family affair as we are all working towards the goal of helping to “level the playing field” in this ever changing world that is our music industry. In this issue you will not only find a lot of chart information, there are many new artists that are being showcased with respect to their new releases. Please take the time to check many of these artists out as their website information can be found in many of the ads and articles. This is all about supporting our own and together we can all make a great difference in changing and improving the music industry. For many of you out there please consider getting involved in our next issue that will be entitled “Summer Music Preview”. This is one issue that you will want to be involved in as we continue to “fight the fight” for the independent artists and bands.

Evafe is an American pop singer and songwriter discovered by members of the Otis Redding Legacy in 2009, while performing at a Latin nightclub in the heart of the Atlanta’s club district. Soon thereafter, Evafe inked a recording contract with Fuego Music Group and quickly developed into the face and talent of Atlanta’s international dance pop scene. Her style, personality and vocal ability allows her to be able to sing and perform all styles of music, ranging from Spanish and Latin pop to American pop and dance. Evafe was born just outside Chicago, Illinois and spent most of her early childhood in South Texas and in her homeland of Mexico. The youngest of four children, Evafe was raised in a close-knit, first generation Mexican American family. She was introduced to music in the church, and learned to harmonize from her mother and by age 4 was confidently performing on stage. As a teen in Minnesota, Evafe was home schooled for a couple years and became a lead singer in a Pop Rock band that toured throughout the U.S. at a variety of city and community sponsored events. Upon graduation, she moved to Atlanta where she developed a swag and incorporated every aspect of her life into what now can be heard clearly in her songs. There is a bright future ahead for this amazing new artist. 3

Usher is back at Top40 and radio seems to be just thrilled. “Scream” (RCA/RLG) is his latest and our panel of music programmers are all over this one. TI is also getting plenty of love at Top40. He takes his new single “Love This Life” (Atlantic/WEA) out for a spin and so far the drive has been smooth. “We Are Young” (Fueled By Ramen) by Fun featuring Janelle Monae is becoming quite the hot single around here. Watch for some big weeks ahead for this one. Coldplay and Rihanna have joined forces for the duet “Princess Of China” (Capitol) and many of you are loving this one “big time”, Justin Bieber is red hot once again and make no mistake about it. “Boyfriend” (IDJMG) is the most well received the Bieb has had in quite some time and that has to make Usher, his label owner, quite a happy guy. Between the both of them, there is plenty of money to throw around and you can bet there will be more to come. Nicki Minaj keeps her hold on the format “alive and well” and she just won’t let go. “Starships” (Cash Money/Universal) is the latest masterpiece from the “strange one” and watch for this to head to the top of the charts in record time. Adam Lambert has a new hit on his hands and it comes at the perfect time as the American Idol season wraps up. “Never Close Our Eyes” (RCA/RLG), a single that he just performed on American’s #1 music show, seems to find a kinder and gentler Adam, but make no mistake about it, he’s a powerhouse deva. Rihanna is getting plenty of action at the format for another gem (among many). “Birthday Cake” (Def Jam) is the jam that I’m talking about. Kanye West is out there with a record that many of you like. “Mercy” (Def Jam) is his latest offering and I hope he gets a little “mercy” from Kim Kardashian. Carly Rae Jepsen is the new girl in town and let me tell you just how hot this young lady is. Discovered by Justin Bieber and signed to his own label, she is taking her debut single “Call Me Maybe” (School Boy/Interscope) to the “top of the charts”. We saw her perform on the Ellen Show and what an amazing performer she is. Madonna is back and getting some solid spins for her “Give Me All Your Love” (Interscope). David Guetta has teamed up with Nicki Minaj (she has to have at least ten songs on the charts at the same time) for the dangerous duet “Turn Me On” (Virgin). Foster the People is keeping the heat on everybody thee days. They are taking “Don’t Stop” (Columbia/Sony) for a ride and it appears to be a good one at that. Recording artist Dynamite Jonez has a good thing going. His single “Ignition” (Q4 Music Group) has been at the top of our “most added” chart for weeks and this track shows no signs of letting up any time soon. Katy Perry continues her “winning ways” at the format and that is always a good thing. “Part Of Me” (Capitol) is her latest monster hit single. Newcomer Greg Walllace is making quite the name for himself at Top40. “Take Another Chance On Luck” (Riff Ranch) is his debut and so far so very good. Lady Gaga is still getting plenty of love out there for her “Marry The Night” (Interscope) track. We’re also seeing and hearing some great things about Jimmy White’s new track. “Warm” (828) is another stellar song from him and it has #1 written all over it. We’re still getting strong reports on the Kelly Clarkson single “Stronger” (RCA/RLG). It seems that the more this one is getting played the “stronger” it becomes. I’m not sure if you got the chance to check out Karmin yet. If not, make sure you get on dime and give the single “Broken Hearted” (Epic/Sony) a few good spins. It is a proven winner and make some room on your playlist for this gem. Steve Northeast has had a good solid run with his debut single “You’re the One”. A new one is expected next week. Ron Gallucci has made a big impression with his debut “Hollywood” (RGM). He is set to release “Something About You” from the new Dizzyland CD that just came out. I’ll have more about the greatest Top40 hits of all time, right here next time. Peace out.

Jason Mraz continues to work his magic at the AC format. His latest “I Won’t Give Up” (Atlantic/WEA) is just another reason that he’s so well loved at radio. Maroon 5 are back and this time they are taking recording artist Wiz Khalifa along for the ride. They’re putting all of their energy and time into “Payphone” (Octone/A&M) and it’s already paying off some solid dividends. Norah Jones is back at the format and that’s always a very good thing. She’s running solid with the single “Happy Pills” (Blue Note/EMC) from her new album and this one is a real solid winner my friends. Colbie Caillat continues her brilliant ways at AC radio and why not. Her latest offering in “Favorite Song” (Universal Republic) is more true magic from this multi-talented singer/songwriter. The Script is back with a new single and what a treat to have anything new from this talented outfit. “If You Ever Come Back” (Epic/Sony) is the hot new track that our music and program directors are raving about and for good reason. American Idol sweetheart Haley Reinhart has a debut single at radio. “Free” (Interscope) from this amazing young lady shows us why she’s the “real deal”. Neon Trees are the talk of radio this month. The reason for that may be found in their new single “Everybody Talks” (Mercury) which is really “out of this world”. Michael Damian is getting ready for the summer and there may be some new music on the horizon. Not only has he returned for a stint on the Young and the Restless, he’s currently lensing “Confections Of A Discarded Woman” in Romania set for release in the Summer 2013. He also has “A Princess For Christmas 2” & “The Art of Love” in development. John Mayer is back from his hideaway in Montana to bringing us some good cheer once again. “Shadow Days” (Columbia/Sony) is the track that seems to be showing a more “down to earth” John. Recording artist Ed Sheeran is getting some good solid action out there in radio land. “The A Team” (Asylum) is the single that many of you can’t seem to get enough of. Also a hot ticket all over the place is “Part Of Me” (Capital) from Katy Perry. She seems to make all of the right moves, all of the time. I can’t recall someone with this kind of crazy success and all in a rather short period of time. Recording artist Steve Northeast had made quite the impression on our radio panel. His debut single “You’re The One” (Tidal Records) reached #1 on our Indie and Main AC40 charts. The single also spent a record number of weeks at #1 on the Independent Music Network’s Mainstream chart. Steve is set to release a new single that is announced in this issue. The Black Keys are still getting raves for their new single “Lonely Boy” (Nonesuch/Reprise). Newcomer Greg Wallace is making the most of his valuable time at radio. “Take Another Chance On Luck” (Riff Ranch) has been in our “most added” column for a number of weeks and now the single is moving up the charts “big time”. Ron Gallucci has had a very impressive run with his debut single “Hollywood” (RGM). Be on the watch for his new single “Something About You” which is taken from his new Dizzyland CD out now. Jimmy White is “on fire” once again with a red hot new single. “Warm” (828) is the gem that we’re talking about and at this pace it’s set to become another #1 single for him. Joey Canyon has been lighting the charts from AC to Country and for good reason. His new “Lonely Love” (Glo-Dot) single has never had a bad week and watch for some big things ahead for this amazing talent. Be on the watch for Brent David Fraser. I got the chance to see him perform at the Hard Rock in Hollywood for a special VH1 event, and this guy is the “real deal”. Brent makes his home between Seattle and Los Angeles and is set for some great things ahead. Just remember that you read about him first, right here. Singer and songwriter Marsha Jewell is back with a brilliant single. “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) is the one that is making magical things happen for her and for good reason. Emil has had quite a success story going. It’s all thanks to his “Since You Left” (Caper) single. I’ll have more on Emil and the best radio stars at AC when we return for our next issue.

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life. Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again.

MUSIC BIZ Donna Summer Laid To Rest Donna Summer’s family and friends said their final goodbye to the Queen of Disco on Wednesday. The 63year-old singer died last week after a battle with lung cancer. Music producer David Foster and several of her industry comrades attended the private ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee. TMZ posted a picture of the late singer’s casket being taken to its final resting place after the moving invitation-only service. Around 1,000 people attended the funeral to pay their respects to the five-time Grammy winner. Donna is survived by her husband Bruce Sudano, their daughters; Brooklyn and Amanda, her daughter Mimi from a previous relationship and four grandchildren. Her casket was covered in white roses but the family asked for loved ones to donate to the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers. The singer will be best remembered for her hits Last Dance, She Works Hard for the Money, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls and Love to Love You Baby. Her album sales have soared 3277% since her death, according to Billboard.

The Pussycat Doll was ousted from the show by Simon Cowell after just one season of the singing competition show. And Nicole told E! News that she has only warm regards for Britney and fellow new judge Demi Lovato, although she won’t have much time to see them in action. ‘I don’t watch a lot of television,’ Nicole told the site. ‘I’ll try to watch it when I can though.’ ‘I wish them the best of luck, I’m excited for them.’ Britney recently tweeted about her excitement of heading out on the road to conduct auditions around America. She will be joined by Simon, Demi and L.A. Reid. A new host for the show has not yet been revealed after Welsh presenter Steve Jones was also fired.

Drake ‘excited’ About New Music

Drake can’t wait to begin crafting new songs. The Canadian rapper commenced his Club Paradise Concert Tour earlier this month. Despite being busy on the road performing, Drake is ready to compose novel tunes. ‘I’m really excited to start working on new music. I start like June 18,’ Drake told MTV News. ‘I got a studio bus out here so me and 40 started working on a couple joints the other night. Just getting warmed up. I did like the Amen track for Meek [Mill] and I did No Lie for 2Chainz.’ Drake has collaborated with numerous artists and is eager to see the tracks reach fans soon. ‘I’m on French Montana’s single; me, him, [Rick] Ross and [Lil] Wayne, which is a crazy lineup,” he explained. ‘And then on Justin Bieber’s record. I wrote a song for him as well.’ Drake appears on Justin’s single Right Here, a track on the pop singer’s upcoming album Believe. Justin’s new record will be released June 19.

Calvin Harris Releases Video Featuring Ne-Yo

Following the 2011 worldwide hit ‘We Found Love’ with Rihanna and radio and chart smashes ‘Bounce’ feat. Kelis and ‘Feel So Close’, Calvin Harris releases the video for current single ‘Let’s Go’ feat. Ne-Yo. The video sees three couples run amok in Rio, Tokyo and Los Angeles. ‘Let’s Go’ was first played exclusively on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show a few weeks ago and features Ne-Yo’s catchy vocals alongside signature Calvin Harris electro beats which build massively into a huge addictive, dance chorus. It is sure to be one of the floor fillers of 2012.

Simon Cowell Honest About Relationships

Simon Cowell reportedly refers to his lady friends as ‘toys’. The music mogul has been at the centre of some lurid claims about his personal life recently, due to a new biography about him. It’s been alleged he had a secret affair with his former UK X Factor judge Dannii Minogue, will only use black toilet paper and was once robbed by a woman he met in a nightclub. Several women who are close to Simon have spoken out in his

defence, insisting he isn’t the womaniser he’s being made out as. ‘He never makes any bones about wanting more from relationships ‘ he’ll openly call me his ‘toy’,’ one told the British edition of Grazia magazine. ‘To me, that’s honesty. If you don’t know where you stand with Simon, then there’s something wrong with your brain. I wish there were more men like him.’ Another woman who is close to Simon insists he is always clear about what he wants from relationships. He uses humour to ensure ladies don’t expect too much from him. ‘No girlfriend is ever going to come first to Simon. He even says romance is number five on his list (business is at one, money is two, his mother three and working relationships, four). Although, he is very cheeky, and when he’s dating someone and they’ve had a good week, he’ll say, ‘Oh, you’ve moved up to number four,’’ she said. ‘It’s only girls who think they are too special who get offended by Simon.’

Usher: New Single Is Next Step

Usher says his new song is “the next step” in his music career. The R&B star is gearing up to release his seventh studio album, Looking for Myself, later this year. Usher has released lead single Climax from his upcoming album and says the second song Scream reflects the varying sounds of the record. The star teamed up with superstar producer Max Martin and says the music maestro’s input was a valuable one. “This album has many different views and many different perspectives. And me and Max Martin, we’ve had success together in the past, and this was a record I felt represented the other side of the [album],” he told MTV News. “Whereas the first song was a little bit more artistic and a little bit more soulful, and it has done everything, it probably exceeded my expectations, I mean, from the moment I was able to give it away. I was able to kind of be reintroduced in a way musically, and thank you to [producer] Diplo, but Scream is really like the next step. It’s just in time for summer and the type of experience that I want people to get out of the album.” Usher is proud of his newest record. The 33-year-old star says it should cater to all fans. “It’s a ton of other experiences and a ton of other walks... as I’ve had this long journey over the last year [and] every bit of what I’ve experienced I’ve put into a creative, artistic way,” he explained.

Katy Perry: I’m Stress Eating

Katy Perry has been ‘stress eating’ as she tries to wrap up filming for her 3D film. The 27-year-old has been shooting Katy Perry: Part of Me, a movie which chronicles her life and concerts. But it seems she has been turning to junk food

as she worries over the production of the movie. ‘Devouring a papa johns pizza, garlic sauce dippin’. I think this is what they call stress eating #gottafinishthisfilm #KP3D (sic),’ she wrote on her Twitter page. Katy has plenty on her plate at the moment with her film, concerts and promotion of her new music. She is also reportedly set to add to her workload as a judge on the UK version of The X Factor. The Fireworks star is said to be replacing Kelly Rowland on the panel of the talent show. Work is not the only thing that seems to be plaguing Katy’s mind. She is also concerned about her friend Jessica Simpson’s pregnancy. The star is due to give birth to a baby girl with her fiancé Eric Johnson any time soon. ‘Has Jessica Simpson had that baby yet?! I’m getting anxious (sic),’ Katy tweeted.

Lady Gaga Warned To Tone Down In Indonesia

Lady Gaga and her mom can’t resist re-enacting her duet with Beyonce Knowles The superstar singer has hit the road with her latest world tour, the Born This Way Ball. Gaga has a soft spot for her single Telephone ‘ which she recorded with Beyoncé in 2010. She admits that when her cell phone rings, she often belts out the tune ‘ and her mom loves to join in too. ‘Is it wrong that sometimes when people call me, I break out into Telephone, my mom always does Beyonce’s part (sic),’ she tweeted on Wednesday. Gaga is currently in South Korea, where she is scheduled to take to the stage on Friday. She will perform 110 dates around the world to promote her latest album Born This Way. The star is known for her eccentric outfits and shocking stage shows and has been warned to tone down her show to avoid offending fans in Muslim countries. Gaga is set to perform in Indonesia on June 3 and she has been told her risqué behaviour will not be tolerated in the country. “I call on Lady Gaga to respect our cultural and traditional values. Most people here are Muslims and we cannot tolerate her revealing outfits and sexy performances,” Indonesia Ulema Council leader Amidhan told AFP. “It’s better for Lady Gaga to cancel her show in this country if she has no willingness to respect our demand. Please do not destroy our nation’s morality and ruin our dignity.” Big Daddy, who are promoting the concert in Jakarta, insist they have addressed the issue with the singer’s team. “We have informed Lady Gaga’s management [about these concerns], and they said that they will respect the country where she will perform”, said Hanny Marpaung, corporate secretary for Big Daddy. However, he admitted that they ‘still don’t have any clue” what Gaga is planning to wear. The 26-yearold star has promised her fans that the Born This Way Ball tour will be the best 21

Marsha Jewell has an huge success with her first three releases: “I’m Still in Love With You,” “Waterfall” and “Nothing.” But with her fourth release from her I LOVE CD, comes “Country Cowboy,” a very personal song about a real Country Cowboy ---- Marsha’s late husband Don. “The songs on the album I Love are about my late husband Don, my ‘Country Cowboy,’ and our life, our love, and my loss. Our love story,” acknowledges Marsha, who writes about her life’s journey. “I’m happy there are people that seem to experience love and emotion from the lyrics and melodies of my songs. We all live, love, lose, and go on. I hope my love songs help others heal and feel love for others. “My inspiration to write comes from my heart --- my happiness, my sadness, my blessings, my needs, my wants, my tears, and sometimes even, my anger, but mostly, my love. I Love is dedicated to the memory of my “Country Cowboy,” Don. So, the success of all these songs, means more to me than most people know and I am forever grateful.”

George Michael Finishes ‘Best Ever’ Record

22

George Michael has finished work on his “best dance record ever”. The singer was hospitalised with pneumonia in Austria last year while performing a series of shows for the first time in three years. George is now back to health and getting his music career back on track. He has promised that his comeback will be an impressive one. “Ok my lovelies, WHITE LIGHT is done and dusted! Am I allowed to say it may be the best dance record I’ve ever made....! (sic)” he wrote on his Twitter page. “Finished it today..... :)” At the beginning of the month, George updated his fans on his progress with White Light. The 48-year-old British star couldn’t wait to tell fans of his plans to produce the track. “Yesterday I began to write a song called White Light. It’s for all of you, for everyone who prayed for me, for every one of you who has prayed for me, for every person who has stopped me in the streets The nationally popular “Larry’s Country Diner,”one of the top-rated to ask me how I’m doing, you shows on the RFD-TV network which pulls an audience of 1.4 million have made me feel so blessed people each and every month, sponsored the main stage of the 35th (sic),” he previously wrote. “And I promise you it’s a blinder. :)” Annual Bellevue Community Picnic recently.

Chris Brown Shocked By Fan’s Tattoo Chris Brown was left astounded after a fan got his face tattooed on his leg. The American star jetted into Australia this week and has kept his followers updated on his whereabouts via Twitter. He loves hearing from his admirers on the social networking website and felt he had to pay tribute to one fan who had taken his dedication to the next level. Chris posted a picture of the man’s calf, which boasts a large black and white etching of the singer’s face. ‘Omg! One of my male fans got this tatted! Teambreezyaustralia (sic),’ he wrote next to the picture. Chris has enjoyed sharing other pictures over the last few hours. He was apparently excited to be heading to Australia and added an image of some of his travelling companions apparently sitting in a bar before they boarded their flight. ‘Drunk before flight!!!! (sic),’ he wrote. Chris hit the headlines recently following claims he was reuniting with his ex-girlfriend Rihanna, who he split from after he assaulted her in 2009. The pair have worked on two new songs together, although they haven’t confirmed they are romantically involved. Rihanna has been in Australia promoting her new movie Battleship recently. It was known Chris would be arriving this week, ahead of his performance at the Supafest festival in Brisbane. There was speculation they might take to the stage together to sing the new tracks, but that is now known not to be the case.

Beyoncé And Jay-Z Renewing Their Vows?

Beyoncé Knowles and rapper husband Jay-Z celebrate their fouryear anniversary today amid reports that they are set to renew their vows. The couple tied the knot in 2008 but they have been together over 10 years. An insider told Star magazine that the proud parents of threemonth-old Blue Ivy are more in love than ever and want to solidify their union with another trip up the aisle. The 42-year-old music mogul apparently ‘came up with idea.’ ‘Jay told Beyoncé earlier this year that he wanted to marry her all over again,’ a source told the publication. ‘They want the ceremony to be simple but elegant. They’re having Nobu cater it, and Jay put together a special presentation showing him and Bee through the years.’ The event is set to take place at the couple’s estate in Scarsdale, New York this month with close friends Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin, Kanye West and Oprah NMW - MAY 25, 2012

Last year’s Pop/Top 40 winner, Kimbra has recently exploded onto the international music charts as the featured singer on Australian artist Gotye’s current #1 hit song, “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Her recent TV performances with Gotye on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Saturday Night Live were electrifying and introduced her to the US public, fortifying her meteoric rise to fame.

Madonna Slams Lagerfeld

Madonna has slammed Karl Lagerfeld for calling Adele ‘fat’, insisting his comments were ‘ridiculous’. The creative director of Chanel has come under fire for criticising the British singer’s appearance. Many stars have shown support of Adele, and Madonna has now added her voice to the debate. She believes Adele is hugely talented and her weight shouldn’t be an issue. “That’s horrible. That’s ridiculous, that’s just the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,’ she told British newspaper The Sun. “I don’t like it when anybody says anything bad about anyone - I don’t like Recording artist Todd Allen Herendeen had the opportunity to catch up it. We hear that Todd got much she weighs has nothing to do the entire scoop on how the campaign will be ran. with it.’ Madonna also spoke of her grief following the death of Whitney Houston last month. The 53-year-old star has recalled being in awe of the late singer when their careers were both taking off and feels saddened by her demise. ‘When these things happen, I’m always shocked by the first thing you say - ‘It’s such a loss’ - which doesn’t quite cover it. Then you reflect and you think, ‘How did it happen? How did the people around them allow it to happen?’’ Madonna mused. “I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, ‘Oh my God. She’s such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.’ I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence. “And I was thinking, ‘We are all innocent at one stage in our life. It’s just interesting, the paths our lives take.’ “I was struck by that - how well she started and where she ended up and the tragedy of it.” Madonna went on to address the controversy surrounding her performance with M.I.A. at the NFL Super Bowl. During her half time show, audiences complained after seeing M.I.A. make a rude hand gesture. Madonna can understand why people were so upset. “We were in the sacred ground of football and New Music Award nominee Erica Nicole paid a visit to our co-editor Larry I think that it’s a very important and Weir during her recent visit to the West Coast. She is looking forward to going back on the road, but admits she is ‘incredibly anxiety-ridden’ about ensuring she entertains her fans around the world.

Robin will be judging alongside Kelly Clarkson, Sugarland star Jennifer Nettles and soul sensation John Legend. The star is comfortable with creating music with anyone. ‘Nothing is outside of my comfort zone,’ Robin explained. ‘For me, any song is just how you feel it, and if you can feel a lyric, then you can perform it well.’ Robin will not be judging Duets contestants harshly. ‘I’’m way too kind. I will be honest, but I want to be inspiring,’ he said. ‘Because really, it’’s not about what you’’re not, it’’s about what you can be.’

Beyoncé was originally planning to perform twice in Ovation Hall at the Revel Entertainment Complex, but due to demand she added an additional two shows.

Roger Waters Announces Final Wall Show

Roger Waters has been on the road touring with The Wall for almost two years and has made it clear that, when this tour ends, it will be the last of his performing days. The original tour was set to end in Philadelphia, PA on July 14 but, in the following video, Waters announces one last HUGE show in Quebec City, Canada on July 21. Plans are to build the largest Wall ever at over 800 feet wide. Will this really be the end of Waters’ music career? We doubt it as he has recently said he still has the ‘fire in his belly.’ He may never tour again on this massive scale, but it’s a good bet that we’ll see or hear him again in some capacity in the future.

Vietti Chili and Southgate Foods will be spicing up their summer as they partner with the Mountain Man himself, William Lee Golden, for their exciting new promotion, The Discovery of Art. The 114 year-old Nashville-based company has chosen the country and gospel music legend to launch their new initiative that supports the visual arts. His iconic image will be depicted on all cans of Southgate Brand’s Blackeyed Peas and Rice. Distributed by Vietti Foods Company, Southgate brand products are available in 48 states, stocking the shelves in Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar Stores as well as many Walmart stores. Over thirty items in their product line will feature on its labels uniquely-talented artists discovered around the country, including painters, sculptors, photographers and filmmakers.

Blake Shelton continues to have another banner year. Not only did he just close another very successful season as a celebrity judge on “The Voice” (NBC) he has a new hit single in “Over” (WB/WEA) that is out of this world. Laby Antebellum are also keeping their streak of hits alive and well. “Wanted You More” (Capitol) is their latest entry and it’s another excellent one from them. Keith Urban is set for another blockbuster Summer and make no mistake about that. “For You” (Capitol) is his latest and our music and program directors are all over this one “big time”. Carrie Underwood is still a recording artist to contend with. She’s getting plenty of spin action for her “Good Girl” (Arista/RLG) single that makes her American Idol family proud. Lee Brice is off to a stellar start at the format. It’s all due to his brilliant “Hard To Love” (Curb) that is really making things happen. Toby Keith is having a solid run with “Beers Ago” (Show Dog/Universal) and the timing for that could not be any better. “Feel Like A Rock Star” (BNA/SONY) from Kenny Chesney who teams up with pal Tim McGraw is pulling in phones all over Country radio. The Band Perry has a big hit record on their hands. “Postcard From Paris” (Republic Nashville) is their latest and what a great single this is. It’s also good to see George Strait moving up the Country chart again. “Drinkin’ Man” (MCA) is yet another potential anthem from him. Erica Nicole has been pounding out great week after week, Her single “What You Think About Us” (Heaven) is a real hit with our panel and you can just about bet that it will make the #1 spot in record time. “Did It For The Girl” (Republic Nashville) from Greg Bates is also getting a lot of attention from our music and program directors. You may want to give that a few spins around the block. Jake Owen continues his winning ways as he takes “The One That Got Away” (Sony) to new heights. Eric Church is also still getting raves for his “Springsteen” (EMI) track & so is Josh Thompson who keeps building believers for his strong “Comin’ Around” (RCA/RLG). Little Big Town seems to be making the right moves at every turn. “Pontoon” (Capitol) is the gem that we are referring to. Also be on the lookout for Neal McCoy. He’s taking the single “Shotgun Rider” (Blaster) to places that his former major label would have loved to have. We also keep getting raves regarding or good pal Kix Brooks and his “New To This Town” (Arista/RLG), Scotty McCreery, last year’s American Idol winner, is taking full advantage of his fame. “Water Tower Town” (Mercury) is now breaking all over Country radio. Love And Theft are also “on the move” with “Angel Eyes” (BNA/Sony) one of their best to date. Jerrod Niemann is also getting plenty of action for his new “Shinin’ On Me” (Arista/RLG). Buck McCoy is back with a real winner. His new “I Don’t Know The World Anymore” (Weir Brothers) scored some big “most added” action and is set to move up the charts in record time. “So You Don’t Have To Love My Anymore” (Capitol/ EMI) by Alan Jackson is one great single keeping him at the top of his game. Dierks Bently has a solid single in “5150” (Capitol) that is out of this world. In this issue you will find some great Country single on our Future Hits compilation. Make sure you check out Ace Diamond and their brilliant “Flat Out Of Gas” (Allagash Country). Young Maddie Wilson has a winner on the compilation called “Skirts” that is stellar. “Warm” by Jimmy White has just been released to Country and started as the #1 “most added” at the format. Joey Canyon has a solid hit at Country radio. His “Lonely Love” (Glo-Dot) is on the move” and it’s a great record. Singer/songwriter Marsha Jewell also has a winner in “Country Cowboy” (Jewell Lane) that is fast becoming a multiformat hit. I’ll have more for you in our Summer Music Preview coming soon.

T I M E F aith Hill At CRS: Attendees at this year’s Country Radio Seminar will be treated to a special performance from the beautiful Faith Hill. The singer will perform on Friday, February 24 as part of the Country Radio Seminar during the Warner Brothers luncheon. A superstar since “Wild One” topped the charts back in 1994, Hill is one of America’s most popular and admired entertainers. Her current single, “Come Home,” is the first single from her upcoming studio album for Warner Brothers, due in stores later this year.

R ascal Flatts Announce Tour: As one of the hottest touring acts in any genre, Country music supergroup Rascal Flatts announced today they will launch a brand new tour beginning this summer, Farmers Insurance presents “The American Band Tour.” The tour will feature an all band set-up with Little Big Town, Eli Young Band and Edens Edge opening. The shows will begin in Hartford, Conn., on June 15 at the Comcast Theatre. Please check www.rascalflatts. com for up to date tour information. “We are always looking for new ways to re-energize our live shows,” says Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts. “We thought bringing out these bands, whom are among some of our favorite vocal groups, would make a great night of entertainment!”

C raig Morgan Recognized By NRA:Craig Morgan, who served 10 years in the U.S. Army before launching his career as a country music hitmaker, has been declared the NRA Country Artist of the Month for February. Many of country music’s biggest stars, including Trace Adkins, Lee Brice, Montgomery Gentry and Justin Moore, have joined the “This Is NRA Country” movement celebrating their support of our U.S. military, appreciation for the great outdoors, and love of family. “As someone who has served alongside the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, I have a huge sense of pride in what this country stands for and what our freedom means,” shares Morgan. “As many service men and women make their way home and reunite with family, we are here to give them support and encouragement along with our gratitude. I am Craig Morgan and I am NRA Country.” K ellie Pickler Brings Ellen Some “Popcorn” : Kellie Pickler has always been one of Ellen DeGeneres’ favorite guests, and she likely endeared herself to the talk-show host on the January 27 edition. Pickler, promoting her excellent new 100 PROOF disc, presented Ellen with a unique gift - a jar of Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey. The singer performed “Where’s Tammy Wynette,” from the album.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! NMW - MAY 25, 2012

Dustin Lynch Sings for the ‘Angels’

70 miles separate Tullahoma, Tenn., from Music City. With that close proximity to Nashville, it’s no wonder that Broken Bow recording artist Dustin Lynch became so enamored with the sounds he was hearing on the radio growing up. “Nashville was obviously the big city for me growing up,” Lynch recalls to Billboard. “I can remember coming up here for the malls and the doctor’s appointments and the other big occasions. Each time I would see the skyline, there was just a feeling that would come over me -- ‘Man, I’m in Music City.’ It was always so exciting to be in Nashville.” He also recalls his first time going downtown. “My first time on Broadway, I drove myself up to see my first concert, the rock band Incubus. As many times as I’d gone to Nashville, I’d never gotten to go downtown. So, we rolled in with the windows down, and with all the people there and the music, I can never forget that moment.” The singer went on to say that even if you’re not into music in Middle Tennessee, it’s a definite part of the culture. “It’s something everyone from out of town thinks you’re a part of, even if you’re not. I can definitely see how it rubbed off of me at an early age,” he says. Lynch’s debut single, “Cowboys and Angels,” is quickly making an impact at radio stations across the country. He says it’s hard to believe the direction his career has taken. “It’s a dream come true,” he says. “I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet that I have a song on the radio. It’s a dream I’ve had for years.” True to the nature of the viral world we live in, his first time hearing a radio station play it was online. “I’m still waiting to hear it randomly. The first time I heard it, I knew it was going to come on -- so that took a little bit of the surprise factor off,” he says. “But, what was really cool about the first time was we were on the bus in Alabama with the record folks on the radio tour. WYCD in Detroit called and say that they were going to do a ‘New Music Spotlight’ at 1 o’clock. So y’all tune in. We turned it on and heard it streaming online on the bus. Just to hear it with the team that has been working so hard was really cool.” When asked about his heroes, Dustin mentioned two icons: Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson. “Garth is my hero,” he says. “I’ve been belting out Garth songs since I can remember. Alan is such a prolific songwriter, and has had so many hits over the years. Those two are my biggest influences.” Lynch definitely noticed how Brooks captivated his audiences - he was among them. “I think he’s universal to everybody. Just like with any music, there are people who don’t like him, but he appeals to the masses. Performance-wise, he owns the crowd like no one else on earth can,” Lynch says. “That’s what I was amazed with by him.” Though he is enjoying success as a singer, Lynch says he was initially bit by the songwriting bug. “A television channel was airing live rounds from the Bluebird on TV. I was watching that show with Dad, and I had just gotten where I could play and sing some. I didn’t realize that behind these Randy Travis songs, that there were really cool stories that the writers had. When I was 16, my parents let me come up here and play open mic at the Bluebird,” and from that point on, Lynch knew what he wanted to do. He’s very pleased to be associated with the staff at Broken Bow Records, which has become one of the top labels in town. “They’ve had a lot of success with Jason Aldean and Thompson Square, but the best part about them is that they are a family. Everyone cares about everybody, and that shows in the passion about my music. I’m excited to be a part of the team,” he says. Also a part of the team is producer Brett Beavers, who Lynch is very excited to be working with on his debut disc, set for release later in 2012. What are his thoughts on what he would like to accomplish this year with that album? He doesn’t miss a beat, saying “A few hits would be great, but just being able to do music would make me happy.” He says he’s staying out on the road meeting radio at a fast and furious clip, but there are no complaints. “You’re busy and everything, but I’m soaking it up, I promise. It’s not so overwhelming that I’m not smelling the roses as I pass them,” he says. NMW - MAY 25, 2012

College radio is “alive and well”, especially for our Indie Artists and Bands issue, our favorite of the year. We’re also pumped up on the fact that we have a new Future Hits for your listening pleasure. There are some great artists on this one for sure. Newcomer Jayson Bendera has a killer track called “Rebel Angel” (Ammbercy) that you need to give some good spins to. “Booty Rock” from Bob Gordon is also a real crowd pleaser. Tyler Matl has one of our favorites in “Filthy Liar” (T.M.E.). Make sure to give all of our Future Hits artists some good play and coverage. No one does more for the indie artist and band than John Shea, music director for WATD (Marshfield, MA). Located at 95.9 on the FM radio dial, John and WATD have a lot to offer. As a long-standing independent station, they really understand the role they play in helping both the local and national independent music community thrive. “It’s always been our mission to pass the megaphone around, and we are just as passionate about this today, as we were 30 years ago”, John tells New Music Weekly. Their community was shocked and saddened to hear of the silencing of WFNX, a pioneering Boston radio station that turned generations on to local independent music scene. WATD now steps up to the plate to fill that void. Their “Almost Famous” show on Tuesday nights, runs from 8-10pm, hosted by John Shea and Lisa Azizian who also does the morning show. Almost Famous highlights the best current independent local music from the New England area ranging from Rock, Pop, Americana/ Country and Blues. The world needs more vehicles like this to be sure. Other music shows include “The Eclectic Picnic” & “Twilight Showcase”, along with a “Local Artist Spotlight”. A f t e r a r u n o f s u c c e s s f u l d a t e s i n G e r m a n y, IAMDYNAMITE share a behind-the-scenes video for the track “Where Will We Go” from their Euro adventures and announce another run of dates from their upcoming debut LP SUPERMEGAFANTASTIC, set for release on June 5. Exploding with thunderous beats and crunching power chords, IAMDYNAMITE establish themselves as a two-piece rock and roll force to be reckoned with - armed with a single guitar, a basic drum kit and locked-in harmonies, the energy from the duo burns through speakers and electrifies off the stage whenever IAMDYNAMITE unleashes their unprecedented brand of noise. “No Love” is the standout single from Hooray For Earth’s debut full-length LP True Loves, released by Dovecote Records last year. After the recent European release of True Loves, “No Love” has garnered serious fanfare, gliding its way into the BBC1 A-List and landing the group on a myriad upcoming festival dates. This remix by the everincredible Twin Shadow, is a reinvigoration of the song’s foundational mantra, a percussive triumph with a Chicago house feel. “Stayed up late in the California night working on ‘No Love’”, said Twin Shadow. “I heart Hooray For Earth” he added. The late night vibes are palpable, as is the love. Paper Magazine premiered the song recently. Be sure to check out Hooray For Earth on the road this summer. Robert Lee Coleman’s new album “One More Mile” will be released this month. This album is filled with the driving blues that Coleman has brought to the scene ever since he started over fifty years ago. This is his second album in partnership with Music Maker. He is among the guitarists that invented funk. But in this album you hear him playing stinging rock blues, showing his musical versatility,” Says Tim Duffy, Music Maker’s founder. Coleman was born May 15, 1945 in Macon, GA. He grew up in a time when the central Georgia area was a hotbed of Blues, R&B, and early Rock ‘n Roll, and his album One More Mile is the culmination of a lifetime of blues. In 1964, Coleman was picked by R&B legend Percy Sledge to play guitar in his touring band; he was able to travel all over the Americas and even over to Africa. Coleman will be performing songs from his album July 27th at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, N.C. for the “Train to Train” music series.
