Vol. 14 Issue 1

New Music Awards Nominations N ot only is this our first “official” printed issue of 2012, it’s also our Nomination issue for the annual New Music Awards. We could not be more thrilled about both of these events and to all of our nominees a big “congratulations”. The nominations are a culmination of a lot of hard work from recording artists, bands, promoters, labels and publicists. The final outcome was also up to the fans and friends of artists that voted for their favorites on our website over the past few months. We had a record number of votes this year and this told us that the word went out to the entire music industry about participating in something that was very special and important. R egardless of the final outcome for the New Music Awards, all of the nominees can consider themselves “winners”. We are now in the process of tabulating just who will make the final list and there are a number of factors at work here. We value the opinions of many of our music and program directors and that’s why we rallied so hard for bands and artists to participate in this issue. There are a number of artists that took the time and care to run something in this issue to show their appreciation to radio and that will be considered. T his would also be the time to rally your fans and friends. For the next four to six weeks the world will have an opportunity to get involved by voting for their favorites by going to the New Music Weekly website. In some of the tighter races this will be pivotal. Spread the word out there and get your teams “fired up” as that could make all the difference in going from nominee to New Music Award “winner”. All of these artists have had a good run on our charts recently and that’s why they have made the list. The rest is up to you. N ot only are we honoring artists and bands from both the major and independent arena. This is also a time to pay tribute to the radio stations along with their music and program directors. On our nomination list are some of the finest and all of them have been very supportive to many of you out there. What better way to say “thank you” then to help them become an NMA winner. In addition, there are categories for record labels both major and independent, Internet radio stations & record promotion people. All of them are part of the story for all artists and again this is the time to tell them just how much we appreciate all that they do for us. A s of this writing we have not solidified our event for the final announcement. We will notify all of you via email and through the press as soon as that information becomes available. As an artist or band, if you did not get the chance to participate in this issue, you can still run a little something in our next CRS issue that will be made available to the crowds in Nashville and to all of our subscribers, radio stations and industry executives. Again congratulations to all of our nominees. They will be listed in this issue and we look forward to crowning our winners for this year’s New Music Awards in the coming month.

Lady Gaga picks up where she left off with another huge hit single in 2012. “Marry The Night” (Interscope) is the solid gem from the “Gaga” and make no mistake about it, this girl certainly is not the “one hit wonder” that many thought at the start of all of this. Rihanna is the girl that every female artist has to fear. She too is back with another hit in “We Found Love” (DefJam/IDJMG). The only thing that could ruin it all for her is getting back together with Chris Brown, but who am I to say right? Selena Gomez may just have a real solid hit on her hands. Together with her band the Scene, she is pulling in some rather impressive numbers for her single “Love You Like A Love Song” (Hollywood). I can even say that I’ve heard this a few times on the radio so that must mean she really has something here. Hot Chelle Rae is getting raves at the Top40 format for their “I Like It Like That” (Jive/Zomba). They can also add New Music Awards nominee to their credit as well so how about that? David Cook, a former American Idol winner, is still getting raves for his single “Fade Into Me” (RCA/RLG). Another “Idol winner”, and one of the first in Kelly Clarkson, is also riding high on the charts once again. Her excellent “Stronger” (RCA/RLG) is being played all over the world and the producers on American Idol love to have this kind of action, especially with a brand new season in the works. Nicki Minaj is as hot as any recording artist can be. When you add someone like Rihanna to the mix, you are talking “double trouble”. Such is the case with their new offering in “Fly” (Cash Money/Universal) which is fast becoming the darling with our music and program directors. Watch for some big weeks ahead for this gem. Jojo is back on the radio and this time she’s out on an independent record label. “Disaster” is her latest and what have we been telling you for years about artists jumping the major label ship for the Indie label. And speaking of the independent label and artist, Jimmy White, a multiple New Music Award nominee has been riding high on the format thanks to his current hit single. “Hard Ride” (828). This single is moving towards the top of our charts in record time. Newcomer Viennie V has a good thing going and make no mistake about that. The single “For You” (Aurora) has moved faster than single so far this year and you can bet that come NMA award time next year, they should be set for some solid nominations. Breathe Carolina is making quite the name at the format. “Blackout” (Fearless/RED) is the single that many of you are supporting “big time”. Andy Grammer continues his winning ways in 2012. “Fine By Me” (S Curve/EMI) is the track that is setting radio “on fire” keeping Andy at the top of his game. Cobra Starship has teamed up with Mac Miller for what appears to be a major new hit single. “Middle Finger” (this must be a love song) is the track that is pulling in some rather strong support – go figure. Childish Gambino is getting lots of attention at Top40 and that is no surprise to the early believers. “Heartbeat” (Glassnote) is the single that deserves your immediate attention. Rippin and their new “I’mAlright” (TMG Records) tops the leader board once again. Promotions for them are handled by Jon Flanagan who is also a New Music Award nominee for “Best Top40 Promoter” so help Jon out people! I’d like to also give a big shout out to Vincenza DeCesare who picked up several well deserved nominations. In fact, this gives me the opportunity to congratulate all of our nominees. Make sure you visit our website (www.newmusicweekly.com) where you can vote for your favorite nominated band or artist. You can help your favorite radio station, music & program director, record label and even your local record promoter. Look for the winners to be announced soon and good luck to all of you.

Train has to be one of the top favorites in the AC40 arena. They have been the most consistent in putting out great product for the masses and they are back at it once again. “Drive By” (Columbia/Sony) is their latest offering and it’s another gem from this amazing act. Adele continues to amaze us here in the early stages of 2012. “Set Fire To The Rain” (Columbia/Sony) is another solid track from this stellar new artist. Come Grammy time, watch for some magical moments from Adele. I must say that I really love the new single from Roberta Flack. It appears that it’s released on an independent label but that really doesn’t matter anymore these days. “We Can Work It Out” shows that she has not lost her touch one bit. It’s great to have her back on AC radio where she belongs. Seal is back at it and it’s also good to hear him once again on radio. “Let’s Stay Together” (WB/WEA) might be his rendition but he really makes it all his. Watch for some strong weeks ahead for this gem. “Tomorrow” (Cooking Vinyl/Downtown) from the Cranberries is a real winner. This is one talented band and another example of a top selling act that jumped the major label ship for a smaller more effective independent label. Kelly Clarkson keeps her voice out there and just in time for season eleven (can that be right?) of American Idol. “Stronger” (RCA/RLG) is the major hit from Idol’s very first winner and make no mistake about the talent this artist has. The Fray is still getting raves from their single “Heartbeat” (Epic/Sony) and they are another solid act that the format just loves. Jay Scott Berry is picking up where he left off. His new “Wonderful Tonight” (Wedgetail) has been at the top of our “most added” chart for several weeks and now it’s making its way past many records to reveal just how hot this artist is. The band Cohesive is getting plenty of action at the format. It’s all thanks to their “The Only Difference” (KZR) that’s getting support from many of our music and program directors. Jimmy White continues to amaze us with his stellar “Hard Ride” (828) single. Look for this amazing track to hit the top of our charts in the coming weeks. Jimmy is also a multiple NMA nominee and should do very well come awards time. Recording artist Emil is making quite the name for himself at radio. His new single “Since You Left” (Caper) recently hit our “most added” list with some rather strong firepower and he hasn’t looked back ever since. You can be sure that there is a bright future ahead for the amazing and young talented Emil. Sarah Petrella is also another new artist “on the move”. “Can’t Turn Your Back” (Coast) is her latest entry and this one is showing some rather strong numbers. Dan Markell is another recording artist making waves. His new single “Give Me The World” (Fermada Nowhere) is a real gem that is getting raves from many of our programmers. Anne Sweeney and teamed up with Marc Rosett for a solid hit single. “Take The Time” (Fireplace Music) is the one that you need to be on the watch for. Make sure you save some room on your playlist for this gem. Many of the above artists are also nominees for this year’s New Music Awards. Please take the time and visit the New Music Weekly website and vote for your favorite band or artist. This kind of thing sets us apart from any other trade magazine. I also want to give a “shout out” to Heather Youmans, who I’ve worked with who recently that made history by getting on American Idol for this season. You can never tell just how far an artist will go on America’s #1 television show but just to be a part of it has to be quite an accomplishment. Many of you out there have been playing her music and it all started right here on the charts and pages of New Music Weekly magazine.

LEAD TO NASHVILLE If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of Nashville will be in your plans. Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists have packed up all of their belongings and moved to the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A few were overnight successes. It took others a while to make a splash. And still others found odd jobs and waited years, and finally got their break. While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A” lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what all the fuss is about. Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to see, and be seen. There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important enough every year to draw radio station programmers and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other radio format. There’s a lot to be said about your country music superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will 16

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn their audience base, and make them feel like they’re part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known worldwide. Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain. Networking is everything. And it is much easier now than ever before to network and never spend a dime on hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS has never lost touch with that human element. CRS brings all together once a year to place a face with the name. Many programmers have gone for years. Many go one year, and move on, and never go again. Same with promoters and record label personnel. But truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab somebody’s attention. It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some point in our life. Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots. Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another year before we all come together again.

MUSIC BIZ Elton John Super Bowl Pepsi Ad Elton John and X-Factor winner Melanie Amaro came together to make a commercial for Pepsi that will air during Super Bowl XLVI on February 5. In their first encounter on the set, Melanie and Elton hugged and kissed as the rock superstar congratulated her on winning The X Factor in the United States. Between takes, Elton expressed his admiration for Amaro’s considerable vocal talents and her ‘cheeky’ personality, noting that she has a bright future as a live performer. King’s Court, takes place sometime during the Middle Ages, and opens with a series of court jesters trying in vain to entertain and amuse the ornately attired King atop his throne, portrayed by Elton John. None of them succeed...until Melanie Amaro appears! Amaro removes her hood and belts out a funky rendition of the classic Otis Redding penned Aretha Franklin hit Respect. (Respect is also Amaro’s new single. Viewers who ‘Shazam’ the spot during game will receive a video of the song on their smart phone.) The Cult To Release New Album

One of the finest British rock acts to have enjoyed worldwide success over the last few decades, The Cult has wrapped up recording ‘Choice of Weapon’, the group’s first studio album in five years. Released on 21st May 2012 on their new UK label Cooking Vinyl, its 10 tracks reveal the band at its rawest and most visceral, encapsulating cinematic visions and themes of love, revolt, and redemption. Fans can get an early taster of the album from 2pm on Tuesday 31st January when the track ‘Lucifer’ will be available as a free download through the band’s website www.thecult.us. Details are being confirmed for a worldwide tour and will be announced soon. ‘Choice of Weapon’ is the follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2007 release ‘Born Into This’ that the UK’s Mojo magazine called ‘a wholehearted, utopian and irrefutably exciting record.” Long-time NMW - FEBRUARY 3, 2012

Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush) - who produced one of The Cult’s most successful albums, the platinum-certified ‘Sonic Temple’ - put the finishing touches on the foundations that were laid by co-producer Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E., Masters of Reality). The record was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert, and the band’s Witch Mountain studios in the Hollywood Hills between July and December 2011. The new release features founding members Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, with drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris Wyse. “We have had the opportunity to work with two of the most influential and talented producers in the world today,’ said Astbury. ‘They pushed us beyond our comfort zone, and helped us craft ‘Choice of Weapon.’’ The album is aimed at the heart of The Cult’s loyal following. It reflects the current discontent and destruction of our eco systems, the search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives. ‘We went deeper . . . we worked a bit harder on this record. We have great fans and they deserve our best,’ added Duffy, ‘and I feel this is as strong as any album we have ever released.’ The album is released as a special edition fan pack on May 14th, followed by digital and double vinyl on May 21st and the CD and deluxe CD’s on June 4th.

Depeche Mode New Album

Rufus Wainwright releases his eagerly anticipated new album, ‘Out of the Game’, April 23rd on Polydor. Produced by Mark Ronson, this is the 7th studio album from one of the very best contemporary songwriters. Rufus says it’s ‘the most pop album I’ve ever made’ while Mark Ronson believes ‘it’s the best work of my career’. Both sentiments can be heard between the grooves of this marriage made in heaven. Recorded in New York last autumn, the 12 tracks sparkle and shine. From the uptempo opening chords of the title track and first single to the gospel tinged rock of ‘Jericho’, through the beauty of ‘Sometimes You Need’ and the emotional pull of ‘Candles’, this new disc ranks alongside Rufus Wainwright’s very best. Musicians on the album include the Dapkings who Mark used for the groundbreaking Amy Winehouse ‘Back To Black’ CD and his own ‘Record Collection’; Wilco’s Nels Cline; Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Andrew Wyatt from Mike Snow; Sean Lennon and Martha Wainwright. Influences, as ever, were all encompassing. Mark says ‘Out of the Game’ ‘has a real 70’s, Laurel Canyon spirit’ while Rufus cites ‘all the greats- Elton, Freddie Mercury, David

Neil Young Goes Tech

Neil Young is working on a new device that he says will revolutionize music downloads. The rocker says the new machine will download versions of music that does not sacrifice any of the quality as happens with most digital services now. The bad part is that it will take about an hour to obtain each song on a high-speed line. Young said in an interview at the AllThingsD’s Dive Into Media Conference that he was taking up the work that he felt Steve Jobs would eventually have done. “Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music, but when he went home he listened to vinyl. I have to believe if he lived long enough he would have tried to do what I’m trying to do.” Martin Gore has said that the next Depeche Mode album should be out “no later than early 2013.” The group enters the studio in March. The album will be their first since 2009’s Sounds of the Universe and their thirteenth overall.

The TV talent show’s judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, along with host Steve Jones, were recently axed in a massive shake up of the programme Simon is now keen to get some big names on board including Beyoncé and Mariah Carey. The Chicago Sun-Times claims that Simon is eyeing up the superstars after seeing the weight that musicians Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have added to rival show American Idol. ‘Simon wants nothing but the best for the X Factor,’ a show insider added to British newspaper The Mirror. Simon is returning to the judging panel for the second series of the singing show with music producer L.A. Reid. The British mogul yesterday thanked Paula, Nicole and Steve for their work on the first series. Paula also released her own statement saying that she totally understood the ‘business decision’. ‘Simon and I, along with Fox and Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation. Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine,’ she said. However, the Chicago Sun-Times suggests the parting was ‘anything but amicable’. ‘There were a lot of angry words. I know Simon and Paula say they’re still friends, and Simon’s claiming he and Paula will again work together, but there will have to be some time for that [rift] to heal after what went down the past few days,’ a show insider told the publication.

it’s ‘on backwards’. The Florence + The Machine frontwoman has been nominated in three categories for the NME Awards, including Best Solo Artist, Best Track and Hottest Female. Florence is modest about the latter nomination. ‘Oh wow ‘ right now I feel terrible, so that’s making me feel better. You should see what I look like now and you wouldn’t have voted for me!’ she exclaimed in an interview with NME magazine. ‘It looks like my face is on backwards.’ Florence is overjoyed at her nod for Best Solo Artist. However, the star thinks the recognition should be spread amongst those who work closely with her. ‘That’s amazing but there’s no way that I could take full credit for everything that’s been done ‘ it’s such a collaborative thing. I work so closely with other people, my band, Paul Epworth and Isabella [Summers],’ she revealed. ‘I guess I started it, I created this project, so in that sense it has been a solo thing that I’ve brought people into. If I won this award it would be shared between so many people.’ Florence has discussed what winning would mean to her. The songstress has reminisced about previous hell-raising award shows, and says there would be even more reason to celebrate should she scoop an award.

New Order To Record New Material Says Sumner

Country Music Star Lee Brice celebrated the New Year by popping the big question to long-time girlfriend, Sara Reeveley, the mother of the couple’s three year-old son, Takoda. The couple was on vacation in Key West Florida when Brice proposed on January 2, 2012. A date has not yet been set. Reeveley, 29, an Ohio native, and Brice, 32, originally from South Carolina, have known each other for thirteen years. The couple’s long-term romance began when they met on a beach in North Carolina. Reeveley was only 18 at the time. Brice’s current single, “A Woman Like You,” is climbing the New Music Weekly charts. 22

Bernard Sumner has told Xfm. co.uk that New Order are primarily looking forward to their live shows right now, although the band - less Peter Hook - have not ruled out recording new material. “Not even thinking about [writing and recording] at the moment because our heads are really on playing live. It really is one day at a time - or one year at a time - and this year is on playing live.” “Let’s see,” he added. “Hopefully there’ll be some recorded music as well.” The band this week annouce four UK dates in April/May. They’ve also confirmed appearances in Australia at the end of February and are headlining both Exit Festival and Benicassim this summer. Bernard also told xfm.co.uk we can expect more announcements as they will be playing “a lot” of festivals this year, as well as touring America as part of a “big year ahead”. And as for what fans can expect from the live shows? “We’ll be playing a combination of our favourite songs. I don’t want to give too much away but we will throw a few songs in there that we’ve never played llive before,” Bernard admitted before confessing that with 30 years of back catalogue it’s challenging to put the set list together. “It’s hard to fit them all in in the amount of time we’re allowed to play for. It’s not too bad if its our own gig - we can put more

songs in there - and we probably will put a couple of Joy Division ones in.”

The hip-hop diva revealed her backstage requirements which included dressing room standards such as fresh flowers and scented candles as well as plenty of food. Among the more common items like dozens of pink or white roses, ‘baked goods’ flavoured candles and specialist drinking water are two ‘very important’ space heaters. The Superbass singer also ordered plenty of food, with a full list being published in the February issue of Wonderland magazine. ‘Egg Whites (scrambled hard), Turkey Bacon (fried hard), white toast (grape and strawberry jelly/jam). Belgian Waffles (syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, butter and strawberries on side) Enough to serve four people,’ the rider lists for breakfast, before going on to lunch and afternoon snacks. ‘Three 12-piece buckets of fried chicken, spicy - no thighs, lots of wings. A deli tray with turkey breast meat, grilled chicken breast, whole-wheat bread or rolls, yellow mustard and other condiments (enough for six people). One large fruit platter with a side of mango and one large cheese platter.’ Other demands included three different flavours of throat lozenges and a cool mist humidifier. In the accompanying interview, Nicki insisted she is rather more low maintenance when she isn’t working. The 29-year-old revealed what she likes to do when relaxing at home and named the signature dishes she can whip up. ‘I watch a lot of Judge Judy. And I watch a lot of Forensic Files,’ she said. ‘And I cook - I cook spaghetti really, really good; I cook macaroni and cheese really, really good; I cook chicken really, really good.’

The funniest night of the decade has been set for Sunday 4th March with the announcement today of the return of Amnesty International’s Secret Policeman’s Ball. Multi award-winners Coldplay, The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, and comedian and actor Russell Brand will be joined by a stellar cast of fellow stars from the world of entertainment to NMW - FEBRUARY 3, 2012

commemorate 50 years of Amnesty International at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. It’s the first time the Ball has been held outside of the UK. Since John Cleese and friends brought together a star-studded mix of comedians and rock stars for The Secret Policeman’s Ball in 1976, the legendary Amnesty International show has championed the right to free speech for people across the world. The New York gala event will also feature UK act Mumford & Sons, along with US stars Stephen Colbert, and Reggie Watts, joined by a host of others to help spread Amnesty International’s message to a global audience. John Cleese, one of the pioneers behind the original Secret Policeman’s Balls, said: “I used to think humour was a luxury, but at the last election Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert taught me it was a necessity. The Secret Policeman’s Ball was - and is - a coming together of the very best comedy talent of any generation to celebrate their art, remind audiences how important free speech is, and highlight just how much vital work Amnesty International does to protect it. I implore you to support it.’ Chris Martin of Coldplay, said: “We are so happy to be involved with the 2012 Secret Policeman’s Ball. We have followed and supported Amnesty International - and the amazing work they do around the world in the field of human rights ‘ for years, and it is a pleasure to be asked to contribute to such an inspiring event.”

Those Rascal Flatts are back at Country radio and that’s always a good thing. “Banjo” (Big Machine/Universal) is the track that many of you are raving about. With their new label Big Machine behind them, good things are set to happen for them all over again. It’s great to see Marty Raybon with a brand new hit single. “I’ve Seen What He Can Do” (Rural Rhythm) is just another example of a major country star using an independent label to “make things happen”. We wish Marty the very best with this one and it certainly is a top priority among many of our music and program directors. “Drink On It” (WB/WEA) from Blake Shelton appears to be a major hit for him. It’s not going to hurt that Blake returns as judge on The Voice” (NBC), not that he needs that to have a hit at Country radio. Josh Turner starts the year off where he left last year’s and that’s by having more hit records to his credit. You can add “Time Is Love” (MCA) to the list as the spins on this one are “out of this world”. Miranda Lambert is also hot in 2012 and she proves it in every way as her “Over You” (RCA/RLG) takes flight. “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” (Republic Nashville) from the Eli Young Band is a real solid winner. This act is so very talented and watch this track move to the very “top of the charts” in record time. Tim McGraw might be winding down on hits for Curb but he does it again for them with “Better Than I Used To Be” (Curb). Is he trying to tell them something? Susan Cattaneo is back on Country radio and that’s a very good thing. Her latest offering is “Little Big Sky” (Jersey Girl Music) and our music and program directors are all over this one “big time”. Susan is also a New Music Award nominee so please help this young and talented artist out with your votes on the New Music Weekly website. You can see her nomination and all of the others in this issue. “Dancin’ Away With My Heart” (Capitol) from Lady Antebellum is a great new song from them. It’s getting top phones according to our research, and the panel of our stations give it a major “thumbs up”. Bobby Dean’s “White Lightning Or Pink Champagne” (Lamon) is another gem that is moving to the top of the charts. Bobby is another solid NMA nominee as is his amazing Country label, Lamon Records. Taylor Swift keeps her story “alive and well” and make no mistake about that. She may be on the cover of Vogue magazine this month, but she can also add “Ours” (Big Machine) to her long list of radio hits. Brantley Gilbert is starting to heat things up. The new single “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” (Valory Music/Universal) is the one that many of you are raving about. For the rest of you, what are you waiting for? Kelly Parkes is as hot as any female artist out there in Country music. Her current single “Don’t Make Me” (Edge/LCR) is already breaking fast towards the top of the charts and she is the “real deal”. You can add Kelly to the multi-nominee category for this year’s New Music Awards. Don’t let her down and make sure to put your votes in for her right now at the NMW website. Bryan Cole has a good thing going and he shows it as his “Love Doesn’t Live Here” (Perfect Vision) moves by “leaps and bounds”. Everybody is raving about the single from Davis Wood and for good reason. “My Dash” (Dew Note) just sounds like a #1 record and that could be a fact very soon. David is also a New Music Award nominee so let’s take care of business and rally and troupes in his favor. You won’t be disappointed. Several American Idol stars have record out and for good reason. “100 Proof” (BNA/Sony) from Kellie Pickler is taking flight just as the new season of American Idol gets under way. Lauren Alaina is working overtime to get her “Georgia Peaches” (Mercury) off the ground so let’s help her out with a few more spins this week. We have our own event ala the New Music Awards and the announcement will be coming in the next few weeks as to how and when we will announce the winners. In the meanwhile get out there and vote and I’ll see you at the finish line.

T I M E F aith Hill At CRS: Attendees at this year’s Country Radio Seminar will be treated to a special performance from the beautiful Faith Hill. The singer will perform on Friday, February 24 as part of the Country Radio Seminar during the Warner Brothers luncheon. A superstar since “Wild One” topped the charts back in 1994, Hill is one of America’s most popular and admired entertainers. Her current single, “Come Home,” is the first single from her upcoming studio album for Warner Brothers, due in stores later this year.

R ascal Flatts Announce Tour: As one of the hottest touring acts in any genre, Country music supergroup Rascal Flatts announced today they will launch a brand new tour beginning this summer, Farmers Insurance presents “The American Band Tour.” The tour will feature an all band set-up with Little Big Town, Eli Young Band and Edens Edge opening. The shows will begin in Hartford, Conn., on June 15 at the Comcast Theatre. Please check www.rascalflatts. com for up to date tour information. “We are always looking for new ways to re-energize our live shows,” says Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts. “We thought bringing out these bands, whom are among some of our favorite vocal groups, would make a great night of entertainment!”

C raig Morgan Recognized By NRA:Craig Morgan, who served 10 years in the U.S. Army before launching his career as a country music hitmaker, has been declared the NRA Country Artist of the Month for February. Many of country music’s biggest stars, including Trace Adkins, Lee Brice, Montgomery Gentry and Justin Moore, have joined the “This Is NRA Country” movement celebrating their support of our U.S. military, appreciation for the great outdoors, and love of family. “As someone who has served alongside the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, I have a huge sense of pride in what this country stands for and what our freedom means,” shares Morgan. “As many service men and women make their way home and reunite with family, we are here to give them support and encouragement along with our gratitude. I am Craig Morgan and I am NRA Country.” K ellie Pickler Brings Ellen Some “Popcorn” : Kellie Pickler has always been one of Ellen DeGeneres’ favorite guests, and she likely endeared herself to the talk-show host on the January 27 edition. Pickler, promoting her excellent new 100 PROOF disc, presented Ellen with a unique gift - a jar of Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey. The singer performed “Where’s Tammy Wynette,” from the album.

Country Date To Remember: February 11, 1962 Somewhere, around Fenton, Mo, there are some students who can say that they had one of music’s sexiest performers as a teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with “All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash. Happy Birthday to one of Rock’s top women! NMW - FEBRUARY 3, 2012

Dustin Lynch Sings for the ‘Angels’

70 miles separate Tullahoma, Tenn., from Music City. With that close proximity to Nashville, it’s no wonder that Broken Bow recording artist Dustin Lynch became so enamored with the sounds he was hearing on the radio growing up. “Nashville was obviously the big city for me growing up,” Lynch recalls to Billboard. “I can remember coming up here for the malls and the doctor’s appointments and the other big occasions. Each time I would see the skyline, there was just a feeling that would come over me -- ‘Man, I’m in Music City.’ It was always so exciting to be in Nashville.” He also recalls his first time going downtown. “My first time on Broadway, I drove myself up to see my first concert, the rock band Incubus. As many times as I’d gone to Nashville, I’d never gotten to go downtown. So, we rolled in with the windows down, and with all the people there and the music, I can never forget that moment.” The singer went on to say that even if you’re not into music in Middle Tennessee, it’s a definite part of the culture. “It’s something everyone from out of town thinks you’re a part of, even if you’re not. I can definitely see how it rubbed off of me at an early age,” he says. Lynch’s debut single, “Cowboys and Angels,” is quickly making an impact at radio stations across the country. He says it’s hard to believe the direction his career has taken. “It’s a dream come true,” he says. “I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet that I have a song on the radio. It’s a dream I’ve had for years.” True to the nature of the viral world we live in, his first time hearing a radio station play it was online. “I’m still waiting to hear it randomly. The first time I heard it, I knew it was going to come on -- so that took a little bit of the surprise factor off,” he says. “But, what was really cool about the first time was we were on the bus in Alabama with the record folks on the radio tour. WYCD in Detroit called and say that they were going to do a ‘New Music Spotlight’ at 1 o’clock. So y’all tune in. We turned it on and heard it streaming online on the bus. Just to hear it with the team that has been working so hard was really cool.” When asked about his heroes, Dustin mentioned two icons: Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson. “Garth is my hero,” he says. “I’ve been belting out Garth songs since I can remember. Alan is such a prolific songwriter, and has had so many hits over the years. Those two are my biggest influences.” Lynch definitely noticed how Brooks captivated his audiences - he was among them. “I think he’s universal to everybody. Just like with any music, there are people who don’t like him, but he appeals to the masses. Performance-wise, he owns the crowd like no one else on earth can,” Lynch says. “That’s what I was amazed with by him.” Though he is enjoying success as a singer, Lynch says he was initially bit by the songwriting bug. “A television channel was airing live rounds from the Bluebird on TV. I was watching that show with Dad, and I had just gotten where I could play and sing some. I didn’t realize that behind these Randy Travis songs, that there were really cool stories that the writers had. When I was 16, my parents let me come up here and play open mic at the Bluebird,” and from that point on, Lynch knew what he wanted to do. He’s very pleased to be associated with the staff at Broken Bow Records, which has become one of the top labels in town. “They’ve had a lot of success with Jason Aldean and Thompson Square, but the best part about them is that they are a family. Everyone cares about everybody, and that shows in the passion about my music. I’m excited to be a part of the team,” he says. Also a part of the team is producer Brett Beavers, who Lynch is very excited to be working with on his debut disc, set for release later in 2012. What are his thoughts on what he would like to accomplish this year with that album? He doesn’t miss a beat, saying “A few hits would be great, but just being able to do music would make me happy.” He says he’s staying out on the road meeting radio at a fast and furious clip, but there are no complaints. “You’re busy and everything, but I’m soaking it up, I promise. It’s not so overwhelming that I’m not smelling the roses as I pass them,” he says. NMW - FEBRUARY 3, 2012

This is our big Nomination issue and we could not be more excited. In addition to all of the Mainstream and Country noms, you can get a look at the nods in the College arena that are most often overlooked. We took care of that and we’ll now get the chance to pay homage to the “best of the best”. You really need to “rock the vote” to turn nominees into major “winners”. All of this and more can be accomplished by going to: www.newmusicweekly. com. Now here is some news that you really need to know! Over 70 bands, most of which are en route to SXSW, will fill Savannah’s small clubs and venues with the best up and coming indie acts. Bands have been hand-curated across multiple genres to represent an ideal microcosm of emerging excellence. Highlights include The War On Drugs, Grimes, Caveman, Oberhofer, Prince Rama, The Love Language, The Men, The Knocks and dozens more. Savannah Stopover Hospitality. Savannah is nicknamed “The Hostess City” for good reason. Bands are treated to the best in Southern food, drink, merriment and hospitality and given the opportunity to stay in local Savannah homes. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast is not out of the question! Festival goers get to immerse themselves in the shamelessly social mayhem of the South’s most beautiful, vibrant and creative small city. Reptar is fresh out of the studio from recording their debut full length due out on Vagrant later this summer, and they are ready to rock. They will be playing at The Echo at the end of the month and we will be there. The guys are fast gaining a reputation as one of the most energetic and lively bands -- sound wise think Vampire Weekend, Local Natives, and Passion Pit. Below is a link to their last EP, also out on Vagrant. Let me know if you’d like to check out the show or interview the band. They will be one of THE breakout bands of 2012. Teen Singer Emil really knows how to kick off a new year. Today he is releasing his new single, “Since You Left,” to radio with national release to outlets nationwide this month. ‘Since You Left’ will be featured in February on our syndicated radio shows. Look out for Emil in 2012. He is on the verge of a big breakout year.”Emil has big plans for 2012. To raise money for a cause he truly believes in, Emil is organizing an event to raise money for The National Center For Missing and Exploited Children. Called Teens Give Back, the April event will take place in Denver featuring a concert by Emil along with a special contest on his website. Details to be released in the near future. “I am honored that I received the IMN Award and I want to thank all of the people who voted for me,” acknowledged Emil. “I am excited about my new single and about Teens Give Back. Teens like me can make a difference.”For more information on this award winning teen artist go to Emil’s website at www.emilnow.com. Continuing its series of product giveaways in 2012, Music Connection will soon be giving away copies of these upcoming releases: the 2-CD reissue of the Doors’ classic L.A. Woman and its corresponding DVD/Blu-ray film Mojo Risin’, both celebrating the 1971 album’s 40th anniversary, and the DVD/Blu-ray release of Tower Heist, the blockbuster film starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. Stay tuned every Wednesday to the Weekly Bulletin from our pals at Music Connection for info on how to enter to win these and other giveaways. Again congratulations to all of our NMA nominees, now get out there and vote!
