[ ED’S COMMENT ]

THE ONLY THING constant is change

I

have said it so often, and it’s still true, the only constant thing in life is change. Daily we are faced with political changes that have a ripple effect on business. Changes we report on in this edition of Hire SA is that Bell Equipment (Bell) will no longer be selling Liebherr excavators. Bell has mutually agreed to dissolve the Supply and Distribution Agreement, through which Bell Equipment sells Bell-branded, Liebherr-manufactured equipment in southern Africa. The change will see Liebherr focus on providing and promoting excavators to a more diverse range of industries and customers. “Though our relationship with Bell has been very positive, we are excited about the opportunity this change brings about and look forward to increasing our presence in the bulk excavator market,” comments Tendayi Kudumba, general manager Earthmoving Equipment at Liebherr Africa. As an alternative solution for the excavator market segment Bell Equipment has signed an agreement with global excavator specialist, Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. Ltd (Kobelco), for the Cherry Ellis – Managing Editor – Hire SA

exclusive distribution and support of the Kobelco range of excavators in the southern African region (read more about this on page 6). Another significant change, is that Desmond Equipment SA, who has been in the Dezzi manufacturing business for 25 years, will for the first time sell a machine that is not manufactured on African soil; but imported from Turkey. “We met Cukurova Machine Industry (CMI) at Bauma a few years ago, and through careful planning, consulting with our customers and doing our own research, decided that offering a backhoe loader to our customers will complete a greater package for them to choose from,” says Carl Gutzeit, sales director at Dezzi (read more about this on page 16). On home soil, due to family responsibilities, I have decided to take a sabbatical and have resigned. I wish New Media Publishing the best for the future. A

ccording to Bell Equipment group marketing director, Stephen Jones, the company is looking forward to developing a long term relationship with Kobelco that aims to provide both companies with the stability needed to realise their growth potential in the excavator market. A division of Japanese-based Kobe Steel, Kobelco is a leader in excavator innovation having developed Japan’s first

construction machine in 1930, followed in 1963 with Japan’s first wheel mounted hydraulic excavator. In 1967 the company launched the first crawler type hydraulic excavator to be produced using Kobelco’s proprietary technology, and in 2006 introduced the world’s first hybrid excavator. With an equally proud history in manufacturing, the company has 10 production centres located in Japan, China, Southeast Asia, the United States and India.

“The Kobelco focus on product innovation and efficiency resonates with our own ideologies and the company also shares our passion for customer support, making it a great fit for our business. We share a number of dealers around the world and we are fully aware of how impressive these machines are and the name they have made, specifically through the choice of premium components, overall reliability and low fuel consumption delivered by

the Toyota Group’s Hino engines,” says Jones. “We are fortunate to have teamed up with a leading capital equipment distributor in southern Africa, and also a like-minded company that believes in listening to its customers and reacting quickly,” responds managing director of Kobelco Construction Machinery Middle East and Africa, John Boyd. “With Bell Equipment’s broad product range, extensive distribution network and strong reputation for strong customer support, we believe that we have found the right partner for our products in this region.” Commenting on the Kobelco machines, Boyd says: “Key to the Kobelco value proposition is our philosophy of pursuing the enhancement of performance capacity and improved cost efficiency with due care for the

environment. All Kobelco excavators have two digging modes - H mode for heavy duty and higher performance and S mode for normal operations with lower fuel consumption. Real life situations show that the S mode can deliver around 20% reduction in fuel when performing the same tasks as likesized machines while engagement of the H mode delivers 8% more productivity at the same fuel burn as competitor machines. “As a specialist excavator manufacturer, we offer users a premium product that we know will deliver for them. Our ‘true blue Kobelco evolution’ is about creating value, building a future and changing the world with the distinctive colour acting as a reminder of these underlying values that we put into our products and business dealings.” Bell will be complementing its extensive product range by developing the full range of Kobelco excavators, from the small 1t mini excavators through to the largest 85t units. This will offer customers options for the smallest

applications as well as competitively priced and perfectly matched loading tools for Bell Articulated Dump Trucks in the construction, quarrying and mining industries. “Kobelco is seen globally as the benchmark with regards to excavator carriers for the forestry industry. Over time they have perfected models to operate in this specific environment, which bodes very well for Bell where these types of hybrid machines are popular. Forestry is a key market segment for Bell and we are excited to have a competitive product to add value to our product offering to this industry.” Teams from the respective companies are currently in the process of laying the foundations to ensure they are able to meet customer expectations. “Stocking of parts in the Bell Global Logistics Centre is underway and technical staff are being up-skilled to deal with the new products. Sales and application specialists are improving their knowledge to better advise and support customers to make the best application decisions,” says Jones. Both companies agree that the new partnership has the potential to shake up the excavator market in the southern Africa region. “We have no doubt the market will react quickly to the association between a fantastic product and a strong, well-established dealer network. We look forward to introducing these excavators to our customers and have confidence that with these machines, and our proven sales and support network, we can earn our rightful place in this market segment,” concludes Jones.

“Groups of visitors who make use of chartered flights become more prevalent each year. This year, an aircraft maintenance exhibitor was also part of the facility for the first time,” comments de Villiers. Among all the farm animals, agricultural suppliers, food stalls, DIY products, 4 x 4 tracks, and programmes in the different halls, the earthmoving’s Original Equipment Manufacturers, truck and trailer distributors and manufacturers, stood their ground and reported great response to the equipment on show.

“We had a good NAMPO with at least 15 orders signed during the show. We believe it will have a great roll-on affect as we generated a lot of leads, which we will follow up in the weeks to come and I am sure we will sell more machines from this,” says Ross Collard, managing director of CSE Equipment, official distributor of Case Equipment. Case displayed various skid steer and backhoe loaders. Lani van der Watt, marketing manager of High Power Equipment, distributors of Hyundai machines says the company had a lot of visitors to its stand, with the

excavators, skid steers and wheel loaders drawing the attention. “We had customers sign orders at the show, but we are still sorting out their finance. All in all, I would say it was a successful show.” Kubota, officially sold and distributed in South Africa by Smith Power Equipment, had one of its dealers on the stand from Nelspruit, Burgerd Theunissen. “We had a very positive NAMPO. with various attachments for the agricultural industry. As usual Bell Equipment had a huge stand, and amongst others exhibited triwheelers, backhoe loaders and the range of Bomag rollers sold and distributed by Bell. “NAMPO 2017 marked Bell Equipment’s 14th consecutive year at the show, which has become a hugely important event on our marketing calendar in terms of our attendance. We look to NAMPO instead as a fantastic opportunity to spend time with a large number of our customers in the agriculture and forestry industries and showcase our bespoke machinery that supports these sectors. NAMPO has become a landmark show that attracts a large number of our customers from

other industries, so over recent years our focus has also broadened to include some of our non-agricultural equipment in line with the diverse visitor profile,” says Bell Equipment Sales South Africa’s Mark Hughes. Amongst the other OEMs and dealers that exhibited was: Barloworld Equipment, Wuhlf, Ussur (a new backhoe loader from Poland, who is looking for dealers in SA), Volvo Construction Equipment (sold and distributed by Babcock), Burgers Equipment and Spares (distributors of Liugong machines), Benetrax with its wheel loaders, and truck OEMs Volvo, Scania and Iveco. WEARCHECK

pioneers condition monitoring app

G

round-breaking, highly innovative and revolutionary are some of the reactions to the recent launch of a brand new interactive customer application (app) pioneered by Durban-based condition monitoring specialist, WearCheck. Managing director Neil Robinson believes that WearCheck is one of only a handful of condition monitoring companies in the world, and possibly the first in Africa, to develop and launch an app of this nature. He is confident it will substantially improve customers’ benefits from their condition monitoring programme by allowing them to make virtually instantaneous maintenance decisions based on reliable data, which is highly accessible. WearCheck customers can now download WearCheck Mobile and, at their fingertips via their mobile device, access a host of critical information pertaining to machinery condition. This data is immediately available even while patrolling the factory floor or inspecting mining machinery on-site. It is no longer necessary to wait until returning to a desktop computer to view test results, and maintenance decisions can be made there and then based on live data. “Our investment in the creation of the app is in line with the company’s dedication to technical innovation and continuous improvement,” says Robinson. WearCheck’s IT manager Eddie Perumal outlines some of the app’s features. “Using the app is straightforward as we have designed it to be intuitive and logical, allowing for ease of use by all generations. The design is an extension of our website look and feel, so the WearCheck branding lends a sense of familiarity. “All data is secure and the login process uses the same username/password credentials as our WearCheck Online website. Those customers registered on the website can start using the app immediately. Once the app is downloaded, customers can access reports and view their current samples list. As an optional feature, this keeps track of unread web/app reports, and notifications about items on this list are sent out as reminders,” says Perumal. “Sample reports can be viewed on the mobile device as either one page, or two page pdf documents. Single or multiple pdf reports can be emailed to different recipients simultaneously. “Sample data can be submitted, either via the equipment/ component search option (recommended), or via the ‘submit samples’ option, where equipment/component verification is needed for currently-listed machinery. Where applicable, new equipment/components information is created in the WearCheck system. Customers can also view their five-day submission history. “One of the highlights and unique features of the app is the interactive key, where customers can ask a diagnostician about a specific sample, and receive an emailed reply on their mobile device,” states Perumal. Perumal concludes: “Another useful feature is the ability to enter feedback about a sample result, component condition or maintenance event. Various search options and filters are available, including sample history and equipment or component searches.” ●

FXJ 275 rock breaker from Furukawa

ROCK BREAKERS for real hard labour Excavator-mounted rock breakers from Furukawa are proving to be extra-durable in the field, which is driving contractors to reexamine their long-held belief that rock hammers be regarded as “consumables” with only a relatively short life span.

T

hanks to Furukawa’s unique Monoblock construction with no through-bolts, as well as less moving and wear points, these tough breakers can last for years in the hardest labour conditions. In addition, the lighter weight and harder hitting power of the Monoblock system means that smaller breakers are required to do the same work as bulkier counterparts from other manufacturers. “The power-to-weight ratio of the Furukawa FXJ-range has a hammer weight to joules output that is unmatched in the industry (Construction and Industrial Manufacturers Association rated tests). For the contractor, this

means saving money on operating costs, diesel and in many instances, it frees-up larger excavators for production work. “Our breakers also transfer less shock to the excavator due to larger slip-buffer plates that eliminate impact recoil shock on the excavator’s boom,” says national product manager, James Linton of ELB Equipment, the exclusive distributor of Furukawa rock breakers in southern Africa. “That means the Furukawa design is far more robust and reliable with considerably less maintenance required, as well as being smaller and less of a burden on the excavator. “ ELB Equipment has a comprehensive range of Furukawa Rock Breakers and attachments for almost any application.

James Linton of ELB Equipment

[ NEWS ]

In addition, the company has the highly convenient F6-BHL breaker that’s specifically designed for use on backhoe loaders to provide solutions in construction type environments, road building, demolitions etc. “In today’s tough market it is important that contractors realise that a rock breaker need not only last the duration of a contract and then be discarded. This has misguided some to settle for cheap hammers that cost 20% less, but at the same time give them 40% less availability. Furukawa’s, by comparison, have been running on many of our customer’s sites for more than 10 years and will work all day every day. “They are also comprehensively supported through ELB Equipment’s dealer network that

extends across southern Africa,” concludes Linton. ●

FACT BOX

Furukawa Rock Breakers are designed for use in a wide range of applications including plant hire, high productivity mining applications, demolitions, as well as primary and secondary rock breaking applications. The Furukawa range includes: • E xcavator-mounted hydraulic breakers • Backhoe Loader-mounted hydraulic breakers • Combination cutter crushers for demolition • Lifting grabs • Excavator mounted compactors.

EMBRACE REDUCES COSTS and improves rental fleet operations Rental fleets have high procurement and operating costs. One of the largest costs is driven by maintenance of the fleet and while ensuring high levels of service, safety and efficiency, these costs need to be effectively managed and controlled.

P

reventative or scheduled maintenance is an effective way to reduce costly, unplanned maintenance and shrink vehicle and equipment downtime. With diverse fleet assets, ranging from pickup trucks to heavy-duty equipment, it can be difficult to keep track of varying maintenance schedules. Falling behind on maintenance leads to asset downtime, higher expenses and reduced profit. This is why more and more rental companies are turning to fleet rental and maintenance software, like Embrace, that supports both time and usage-based preventative maintenance, ensures assets, across all locations, are properly maintained with minimal overheads. According to ACS-Embrace spokesperson: “Embrace enables your

entire fleet maintenance to be consolidated and controlled – all in one centralised location. Embrace gives full visibility into every detail of your company’s entire fleet, including operating expenses, warranties, parts installations, service histories, location changes, driver assignments and more – decreasing downtime, increasing operational efficiency and giving immeasurable control.” The Embrace software solution enables rental companies to schedule and track preventative maintenance tasks, thereby reducing emergency maintenance issues, unexpected production stoppages, and overtime costs for emergency repairs. All job cards for fleet repairs and maintenance are opened and tracked on Embrace. Technicians clock onto job

cards, enabling labour costs to be accurately allocated and employee efficiency measured. The service history details the full cost of the vehicle as well as a running cost per kilometre. Alerts for services due ensure that vehicles and equipment are maintained at the prescribed scheduled intervals. Warranties are tracked and Embrace flags the vehicle, equipment or part if it is under warranty, which saves time and a lot of money. Each vehicle or rental asset can be analysed to show its profitability and Return-on- Investment by drawing on information about service and maintenance costs, depreciation expenses and revenue generated. The software’s flexibility and tailoring options make it a perfect fit for companies of all sizes. ●

SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH of the Dezzi CMI backhoe loader Second generation now taking the lead.

D

esmond Equipment SA (Dezzi) pulled out all the stops at the successful launch of the new Dezzi CMI 883 backhoe loader, which took place at the company’s head office and factory in Port Shepstone. The launch was attended by about 150 customers, some travelling at least three hours to come and view the new machine. In an exclusive interview with Cherry Ellis, Dezzi’s sales director, Carl Gutzeit, reports the company has shown phenomenal growth in the last eight to ten years.

14 | HIRE SA | JUNE 2017

The Desmond Group of companies have been in business since 1974, and particularly in manufacturing for over 22 years. “During the last eight to ten years, we refer to as the transition phase, the next generation has learned the ropes from working in the stores, parts departments, basically every aspect of the day-to-day operations of the company and, myself, brothers Shane and Jade, have all been appointed as directors of the company.” Founders of the Dezzi Group, husband and wife team, Louise and Desmond Gutzeit, which have through

the 43 years of business, established a loyal customer base for the company, are still involved. ‘’Desmond is a phone call away if we need his advice and Louise is at the office on a daily basis,” says Carl Gutzeit. Desmond, has through his sport, racing of motor cars built a new race track next to the factory, which now forms part of the Desmond Group of Companies, and this is a great attraction for customers that come and view machines or attend launches. Customers attending the launch grabbed the opportunity to go drifting or racing around the track with the Gutzeits.

[ NEWS ] SA manufactured products The company manufactures Dezzi wheel loaders, low profile loaders for container loading and chicken farmers, ADTs (20t and 30t), tractors (for the timber and farming industry), sugar cane loaders, the smallest, but extremely productive 7,5t motor grader, timber loaders, rear tip timber trailers and water tankers. The Dezzi CMI 883 backhoe loader is the first machine that is not manufactured on South African soil, but is imported from Turkey. “We met Cukurova Machine Industry (CMI) at Bauma a few years ago, and through careful planning, consulting with our customers and doing our own research, decided that offering a backhoe loader to our customers will

complete a greater package for them to choose from. “The joint venture we have established with CMI is well suited because of Dezzi’s engineering and manufacturing capability; we are the perfect South African dealer partner for them providing a platform for this product into the market,” states Carl Gutzeit. The Dezzi CMI will be sold and distributed in South Africa by Dezzi and aftermarket service and parts availability will be backed by its national service network with branches and dealers in Port Shepstone, Cape Town, North West, Camperdown, Gauteng, Bloemfontein and Dalton.

Specifications Customers like the new backhoe loader because of the ZF rear and front axle. The Tier II Perkins engine complemented by the ZF transmissions, offers four forward gears and four reverse gears with a maximum travelling speed of 40km/h. The Perkins engine offers 74,5kW at 2 200rpm. Front axles offer ease of operation with a hydrostatic steering system even under high load conditions. Limited slip differential, 16-degree total oscillation on the front axle and 52-degree steering angle for great maneuverability. The rear axles offer high input torque with planetary design as well as Electro hydraulic operated differential 100% locking acts on rear axle and selfadjusting high torque internal wet multi disc service brakes. The backhoe boom, arm and loader is controlled by mechanical levers. The Dezzi CMI backhoe loader can be customised according to customers’ needs with the options of a hydraulic joystick for loader control. Four models ranging from basic to the most sophisticated backhoe loader is available. They are differentiated by a crab steering system, transmission type, hydraulic joystick control, and tyre sizes to mention a few options. The backhoe loader is fitted with a ROPS/FOPS cab, which provides excellent visibility and reliability. (During a mini test drive, I have to confess, this is the most spacious cab I have ever seen for a backhoe loader, there is plenty of room for the operator to move, which offers excellent visibility whilst working >>

Weighing in at 7 800kg - 8 750kg and fitted standard with a 1,1 cubic metre bucket, the customers that attended say this is a very robust machine that will definitely add productivity to their sites. Robotic welding at the CMI’s factory offers a steady machine, which working in the most arduous conditions won’t crack the arm or boom. Proof of the Dezzi CMI backhoe loader’s reputation is that the first two machines were sold, before the launch, one to Jed Van Niekerk from Jedidiah Farming in Kokstad and the other to Kameel van der Linde from Pelatona Projects. “We have another six units docking soon and one of these have already been sold to Piet Bodenstein owner at Margate Construction. ATLAS COPCO SELLS DYNAPAC

The Atlas Copco Group has sold its global Road Construction Equipment Division, including the Dynapac brand name, to the Fayat Group.

T

he Road Construction Equipment division became part of Atlas Copco‘s Construction Technique business area in 2007 and manufactures compaction rollers for asphalt and soil application, as well as asphalt equipment planers and pavers. The products are well known globally under the Dynapac trade name. Founded in 1957, Fayat is a 100% independent family owned Group with an international scope in 120 countries and representation by 152 companies around the world. Fayat has earned a reputation for being a dedicated and reputable original equipment manufacturer through 11 road construction equipment companies and dedicated brands active in this area. Dynapac will transfer to Fayat on 1 July 2017 and become a company within the Group operating under the Dynapac brand name. Following the acquisition, road construction equipment, which forms one of the Group’s seven core businesses, public works, foundations, building, energy

services, steel and mechanical construction and pressure vessels - will become the strongest division in the Fayat Group. Middle East Africa will be one of 11 regional Dynapac business areas globally, with sales and service operations in 37 countries together with five global production facilities in Brazil, Sweden, Germany, India and China. The global holdings company will be based in Sweden and the divisional management head office in Germany. Once all due diligences have been finalised, Dynapac SA will be a local legal company responsible for the southern Africa territory within the MEA region with the head office based in Dubai. “This is an ownership change and not a change in business structure,” says Neville Marthinussen, Atlas Copco construction technique business line manager, Dynapac Road Construction Equipment. “Until closure, the Road Construction Equipment Division will remain part of Atlas Copco’s Construction Technique Business area; so it is business as usual,” Marthinussen

assures customers. “As Dynapac South Africa, we will continue to serve the market with our products and services. The current product portfolio remains unchanged and all scheduled product renewals will continue as planned.” Marthinussen confirms that the Atlas Copco name will gradually be phased out to end 2017 and the Dynapac brand will be prominently displayed on all products come 2018. JCB CELEBRATES ITS

40

ANNIVERSARY TH of telehandler production

As JCB prepares to mark the 40th anniversary of loadall (telehandler) production later this year, Hire SA takes a look at the UK production line for the manufacturing processes that makes the company’s telescopic handler the biggest seller in the world.

J

CB built its 200 000 telehandler in 2016 and this year celebrates four decades of this iconic machine. There are now more than 30 loadall models, though the number of engine, transmission, boom and cab options results in over 1 000 machine configurations being built at the heart of JCB’s Rocester facility. Over 35 000t of steel per year goes into the construction of chassis, stabiliser legs and booms. Sheet steel is fed into two main production lines, one for booms and one for chassis, with a side production area for stabiliser legs. The steel is cut using computer-controlled laser and CNC plasma cutting machines. A 650t press is used to form the box section of the boom, which is tack welded with initial fitting of bushes, while chassis sides are drilled and tapped with all necessary holes. It takes 45 minutes to make two chassis sides, with a further seven to 12 minutes of drilling and tapping. All chassis and boom structures are tack welded by hand. Up to 70% of the chassis and boom weld is then carried out by robot welders, with manual operators completing the difficult access welds. An incredible 14 509 818m of welding wire is used in the loadall facility annually. A twin boring machine completes a final bore of the boom mounting points, to ensure the two holes are perfectly aligned. Two £1.2m computer-controlled

machining centres drill, tap and finish the boom sections ready for assembly. Booms, chassis and stabilisers are all fed through a two-hour paint process, starting with a shot blast to remove contamination and prepare the steel for painting. All components are painted before assembly to ensure a high-quality finish. JCB gets through 73 000 litres of primer and 50 000 litres of gloss each year painting loadall. Finished components are baked at 90-1200C to provide a robust, protective covering for the machine. While yellow is

the most popular colour, customers can also order loadall in their own livery. There are 300 staff in manufacturing and more than 460 works in the loadall assembly. Sub-assembly sections sit to either side of the main assembly lines, preparing wiring harnesses, engines and transmissions, cabs and axle assemblies. These feed into the main lines as required, ensuring that production moves swiftly through the process. JCB axles are fitted with wheels and attached to the chassis. Hydraulic valve blocks, rams and cylinders from the hydraulic component division within the

Rocester site go on next. Engines from JCB Power Systems are attached to transmissions from JCB transmissions, with exhausts and other ancillaries added on the subassembly lines. There are around 3 000 components in a JCB loadall and with up to 1 000 configurations, every build is strictly coordinated. With 35 build stages, it takes around eight hours to fully assemble a loadall. Loadall cabs arrive fully finished and these are installed along with the machine’s cooling pack. Three inspection points ensure that every machine meets with JCB’s exacting quality standards. Oils and fluids are added and the engine started. Every loadall goes on to a rolling road and the engine and transmission are put through 13 minutes of speed tests, to calibrate the driveline.

Once warmed through, the loadall enter a UVXPOSE booth that uses ultraviolet light to check the integrity of hydraulic componentry. The initial fluids contain a tracing additive that is easily visible under UV light. An external test facility follows, where 10 operators carry intensive operational testing. This includes warm-up, steering tests and weight tests. Attachments that have been ordered are also installed and tested. The machines then enter a second UVXPOSE dark room for checking as part of an additional quality sign-off, before heading to the pre-delivery inspection centre. In August 2016, JCB opened the loadall Customer Focus Centre. Every machine comes from pre-delivery inspection (PDI) to the CFC, where it is checked over again. Decals are attached and customisation completed, with the

addition of toolboxes, lighting and other optional equipment. The real innovation in the CFC is the Command Centre. Every loadall model has JCB’s LiveLink telematics system feeding information into the Command Centre. Data is also imported from JCB’s tech web service centre and from customer calls. A team collates all available information from loadalls all over the world. If a concern is identified, the team initiates an enquiry into the cause and if it relates to manufacturing, this can be fed back to the factory speedily. Afterwards, the Command Centre then tracks the next wave of machines to be produced, to ensure quality is maintained to the highest standards. The system greatly improves the speed of feedback from the field, which would traditionally have taken weeks to get back to manufacturing.

PRODUCING BUILDING MATERIALS on site

The compact but powerful Powerscreen Warrior 800 scalping screen operation of Ground Breakers

Rather than sourcing expensive sand and aggregates on building sites, a start-up company on the West Rand has started a ground breaking new operation that turns spoils and site rubble into valuable building materials for reuse on site.

T

he aptly named Ground Breakers operation makes use of an ultra-rugged portable scalping and screening machine to separate excavated materials into different sizes or streams such as building sand, building stone, fill, bedding or a range of different sized aggregates as specified by an engineer. Rather than excavate a site and pay for spoils to be dumped, the dynamic duo of JC Janse van Vuuren and Johan Meintjes have turned this traditional method around and are successfully marketing the concept of processing the spoils on site. In addition to saving on dumping costs, builders have the added benefit of reusing the materials on site and reducing the need for additional aggregates to be procured.

Portable solution “The newly available Powerscreen Warrior 800 scalping screens from ELB

20 | HIRE SA | JUNE 2017

Equipment, is easily transportable and can begin operation in hours of delivery. The aggressive nature of the screening process allows large quantities of materials to be processed quickly and the addition of a scalping deck ensures that oversized rocks, rebar or mesh from the building site are seamlessly separated without impacting production. “Effectively that means materials from raw freshly excavated spoils or even demolitions can be put straight through the machine on site without the need for additional crushers and other cumbersome equipment to be brought onto the process. What’s more, it is a high-production machine that is capable of running around the clock for weeks or even months on end to get the job done. “Our role is simple. We set up an operation on site and process materials at a negotiated rate that is marginal when compared to trucked-in aggregates. This is possible due to the

Partners Johan Meintjes (left) and JC Janse van Vuuren with ELB Equipment’s Wakefield Harding (middle)

elimination of transport costs and other input costs and it reflects well on the structure’s sustainability as recycling of existing materials is also more environmentally acceptable. It can even assist developers to earn valuable green credits when building environmentally sustainable structures,” says Janse van Vuuren.

Improved availability Partner and technical expert, Meintjes explains that once the concept of the business was finalised, the process of selecting the right machine was a long one. The focus shifting from the original plan of using second-hand machines, after studies had showed that actual running costs of a new, supported machine would be roughly on par with the new one. In addition, the added

[ ON SITE ]

flexibility of the new type of machine was preferable as it opened new avenues of business being easy-totransport machine, scalping capabilities. “We have long-term goals and needed a machine that can last as long as these plans and adapt to our changing requirements. The Warrior 800 gives us versatility to operate in a quarry on a 24-hour-per-day basis and build up stockpiles and later get transported to a construction site to process other materials. On site it is easy to set up and operate with hydraulic folding tail and side conveyors, rigid feed hopper sides and two speed tracks that can be used to separate up to three streams and stockpile them. “Both myself and JC are involved in other family operations and from experience I know that the Powerscreen equipment is as reliable as they come. Both of us also have prior experience of ELB Equipment’s aftersales support and know that the machines will be properly supported and allow us the ability to enjoy maximum uptime and throughputs from the new machine,” states Meintjes.

Combined experience ELB Equipment area sales manager, Wakefield Harding, says the combination of skills of Janse van Vuuren who comes from a plant hire and transport background, in combination with Meintjes who comes from a mainly quarrying background, is the ultimate mix of skills required to run this type of

business. “Both have equipment experience with Meintjes’ knowledge of materials processing being a key ingredient. Janse van Vuuren on the other hand understands the value of effectively operating machines on customers’ sites and this combined experience made for a compelling case to get the finance required to get the start-up company off the ground. “With their operation permanently based on the Blue Platinum Quarry in Lanseria, the operation processes turn mine material into highly saleable sand and stone products. Its high output ability also ensures the business is able to stockpile materials so that it can be transported to sites as required without impacting the permanent supply stream at Blue Platinum Quarry.” “This effectively gives them the freedom to run a permanent supply business on the one hand, and to generate extra income from on-site screening on the other. And at the rate they are producing materials at approximately 100 tons per hour it appears that it won’t be long until they are in the market for a second and third machine,” Harding suggests. Ground Breakers officially began producing materials in October last year and went into full production in November. During this time the Powerscreen Warrior 800 has already been deployed to other sites where it has been used to clear backlogs and produce saleable building material.

Kawasaki More than a machine, a complete solution Kawasaki is a leading supplier of a full range of high quality wheel loaders in various configurations. In fact, Kawasaki is one of the largest and oldest manufacturers of wheel loaders in the world. In seeking solutions to global environmental issues, Kawasaki continuously develops and provides new technologies that contribute to environmental protection, energy-saving and resource conservation. MOBILE SCREENING PLANT

The Kleemann MS 703 EVO is a triple deck mobile classification screen that precisely screens out almost all types of coarse natural stone and residual construction

set to launch in SA

Wirtgen SA, local subsidiary of the Wirtgen Group, one of the global leaders in mobile machine solutions for road construction and rehabilitation as well as mining and mineral processing, will soon be launching the much anticipated Kleemann Mobiscreen MS 703 EVO to the South African market.

D

eveloped and designed in Germany, the Kleemann MS 703 EVO is a triple deck mobile classification screen that precisely screens out almost all types of coarse natural stone, residual construction materials and iron particulates of up to 150mm up to four fractions. Finding application in both the mining and construction sectors, this screening plant screens out material after the initial crushing process and offers superior performance, fuel efficiency and intuitive handling. Measuring in at 1.520m x 4.440m with a 75kW engine and with a feed capacity of 350t/h, the MS 703 EVO comes with either diesel-hydraulic or diesel-electric drive as well as a large number of screening media to achieve a variety of final grain sizes and different feed material. Thanks to a generously proportioned screen casing, material is well distributed across the screen surface and its built-in peripheral platform means the screening plant is easily accessible for maintenance and screen media changing. The plant boasts a large feed hopper, which can readily accept feeding by means of a wheel loader, an excavator or directly from a crushing plant. Both folding and vibration gates are optionally available. The plant also has a

22 | HIRE SA | JUNE 2017

special space-saving transport position, so that the most compact dimensions can be achieved should the plant be required to move to a new site; this is complemented by quick set-up times and fast screen media change capability.

Classifying screens The Mobiscreen series from Kleemann comes with classifying screens that are renowned for their inherent flexibility, which contributes to optimal functioning and resultant output values. Suitable for a host of applications, the MS 703 EVO’s adaptability is made possible by the variety of available screen casing sizes as well as the ease and speed it can be transported. Screening media on a classifying screen plant are put to the test on a daily basis and are manufactured from a special wear resistant spring wire steel or round wire to withstand the workload and to produce consistently accurate results. Double bracing at intersections makes high mesh stability – and therefore uniform screening – a possibility, which is also influenced by grain shape, moisture content as well as the loaded volume. Various mesh shapes and dimensions are available, including square, rectangular and harp, depending on the required application.

Square mesh screen surfaces are the most commonly used and are predominantly used in applications where a cubic shape is required. Different wire qualities and thicknesses are available: the thicker the wire, the longer service life it will have; the thinner the wire, the higher production it will ensure. Rectangular mesh screen surfaces are for screening cubic grain sizes and are often used to sort natural gravel at high throughput. The Harp screening media are used for screening damp material and difficult screening products. They boast a self-cleaning mechanism through the natural vibration of the longitudinal wires and should be inserted at the lower deck of the screen. The harp screen surface is available in different versions, including W-harp, S-harp, and Varia harp. With fast set-up time, operatorfriendly design and cost-saving features, the Mobiscreen MS 703 EVO is backed not only by Kleemann’s exacting standards, but by fully qualified service technicians available 24 hours a day as well as all recommended spares available at Wirtgen SA’s Pomona offices. Set to be launched in South Africa soon, the local market can expect to learn more about this dynamic new screening plant by means of road shows, demonstrations and site visits co-ordinated by Wirtgen SA. ●

DYNAPAC

ASPHALT ROLLERS take compaction quality to a new level

Dynapac is proud to introduce the sixth generation CC4000 - CC6200 large asphalt rollers. These extremely operator friendly machines offer unmatched ease of operation, excellent visibility and highest quality compaction.

T

he engines incorporate the latest emission reduction technology and performance is enhanced by high vibration frequency and an optional active front drum steering system with big off-set that takes maneuverability to a new level. With the introduction of the first generation Dynapac large asphalt roller, the CC40, in 1964, Dynapac is able to include a wealth of experience and know-how in the development of these latest generation machines. The design of the new sixth generation Dynapac asphalt rollers has the operator first in mind. The single seat, steering and operation module has 180 degree swivel as well as a left / right slide-able mechanism ensuring a versatile driving position and excellent visibility, and eliminates only forward or reverse working directions. The new electronic mini steering wheel further facilitates smooth and accurate steering, setting a new benchmark in ergonomics and maneuverability. The latest technology simplifies roller operation, ensures optimised handling and increases the quality of the

compaction operation result. The startup procedure is another example of simplicity where the machine intelligence takes care of the pre-heating and the engine starts automatically when ready. On this sixth generation Dynapac machine, the offset is increased to 520mm; using the front drum for offset as opposed to the rear ensures even better driving accuracy. This advanced steering gives unmatched maneuverability resulting in a very small turning radius when used in combination with the steering hitch. The increased offset also improves roller stability when compacting weaker road edges, increases the rolling surface capacity when making the final static passes to rid the mat of any marks, and improves operator control of the front drum to follow curb edges and any other obstacles with a high degree of accuracy. The efficient and effective compaction of the sixth generation asphalt rollers make it ideal for modern thin layer applications, which require to be compacted fast due to the very short material cool-off window.

The Dynapac asphalt roller’s successful compaction concept of ‘high vibration frequency with low amplitude’ feature maintains high efficiency on modern thin asphalt layers is continued in the latest generation. While this gives very effective compaction for thin layers, the rollers can also be used for thick layers with high amplitude and a ‘normal’ vibration frequency. In keeping with the Dynapac focus on sustainability and the working environment, the sixth

generation machines incorporate the latest emissions reduction technology, which complies with global regulations. For markets like South Africa that do not yet have ultra-low sulphur fuel available, Dynapac still offers the Stage IIIA/T3 engine alternative. The automatic idling system is standard across the entire range. Should the roller stand in neutral for more than ten seconds at high rpm, the engine will automatically reduce to idle rpm reducing fuel consumption, fuel emissions and noise levels. The optional EcoMode system can be added to optimise the required rpm, always keeping the rpm as low as possible, but still maintaining the correct vibration frequency. The EcoMode system delivers up to 15% lower fuel consumption and a lower noise level. On the new machines, Dynapac has drawn on its reservoir of experience to make the water system, possibly the most important system on an asphalt roller, as reliable as possible. All rollers in the range are equipped with an advanced Automatic Water Control, a sprinkler timer, full flow sprinkler button, dual sprinkler pumps and dual sprinkler bars.
