takes into consideration that by using the correct materials, a single space can transform throughout the day to perform various functions that support the family’s needs. The study also reveals that home design must simplify the lifestyle of homeowners. South Africans want their homes to help make life more enjoyable and easier to live in. For 78% of people this means being able to work from home. Cutting out travel time and eliminating a stressful office environment translates into a more balanced life. “In a country like South Africa where the summers are hot and homes aren’t necessarily built for winter, thermal comfort is important to homeowners,” says Cerruti, who explains that people prefer to live in spaces that make them feel good, no matter the season. “And so, with flexibility, versatility and comfort in mind, the Stand 51 prototype will do more than address the modern requirements of homeowners. It will create a truly better home model that showcases how the evolution of design and technology can influence futureproof home design and living,” Cerruti concludes.

NEWS CORNICES

Decorative polystyrene cornices add an actractive finish to any room and is easy to install. Here’s some useful advice for those in the market for new cornices. CORNICES, OTHERWISE KNOWN as ceiling coving, are decorative structures that create a smooth and aesthetically pleasing transition between ceiling and wall. Cornices come in a variety of styles, and each one will create a specific look. Elements such as room height, building and decor style, and plastering techniques all need to be taken into consideration when selecting cornices for a building project. Swartland has recently added a full range of quality polystyrene cornices to its popular Col Brand. Available in eight different profiles, the new cornices are

system offers a dashboard overview of the key performance aspects of every vehicle. Delivery progress can be plotted against the desired schedule, and it’s possible to view many real time details, such as the location of a particular vehicle, how many kilometres it has covered, what its immediate movements are and the speed it is travelling at. “This is very important information,” says Ittmann. “The raw data can be used, for example, to monitor

and proactively develop driver performance. When the company knows how fast drivers are accelerating and how they work the brakes, they can control vital wear and tear costs, such as fuel consumption and tyre usage. They can also work with their drivers to improve performance and safety on the road, which again, is a key tool in managing a vehicle fleet.” An important factor in the increasing strategic relevance of Fleet Management software to businesses is ease of use. Cartrack’s software for example, offers a dashboard lens to customers via a variety of interfaces, from a standard computer browser to a dynamic mobile phone app. The system can be managed by any relevant staff member, no matter where they are in the world. “Say, for example, a theft has occurred, the vehicle can be tracked in real time, including when it crosses international borders. Immediate access to such data is a vital tool in an emergency situation. Equally, the system allows for detailed recreations of accidents and emergency events, if you choose to add on a camera in the vehicle. In complex legal scenarios, this is a wonderful asset,” adds Ittmann. In terms of administration, users can access the DIY & INDUSTRIAL TRADE NEWS MARCH 2018

ON THE MOVE TOYOTA DYNA

Toyota goes light

Toyota Dyna moves into the light commercial vehicle category. The well-known Toyota Dyna has been reclassified as a light commercial vehicle instead of being in the medium commercial category as has been the case since its introduction to the South African market in 1965.

THE TOYOTA DYNA chassis has been redesigned and is 50kg lighter so the vehicle now has a GVM of 3 500kg, which means it is now classified as an LCV. Ernie Trautmann, the vice president of Hino South Africa, says this change in category for the Dyna came about because its normally-aspirated 3-litre diesel engine is not electronically-controlled so cannot be fitted with a tamperproof speed limiter as is the case with the Hino 300, 500 and 700-Series trucks. Government regulations now require all medium, heavy, and extra-heavy commercial vehicles to be fitted with speed limiters. MCVs are limited to a top speed of 100km/h while heavy and extra-heavy trucks will only be able to travel at a maximum of 80km/h. “The alternative to changing the Dyna’s category would have been to withdraw it from our range, which we did not want to do as it is a popular model for a wide variety of operations,” said Trautmann. “We have taken this opportunity to upgrade the Dyna in several important aspects. The revised Dyna is equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS) as well as being fitted with the narrow cab used for certain Hino 300-Series models. The front panel is now one piece instead of three and incorporates new designs for the grille and bumper, while the headlamps are halogen with multi reflectors,” said Trautmann. There is a new design for the interior with a restyled dashboard, improved seat material and cup holders for the driver and front passenger. Being categorised as a light commercial vehicle means the Dyna will only require a Code B drivers’ licence. The truck will no longer have to undergo annual certificate of fitness testing, which is a further benefit for operators.

Saint-Gobain Weber introduces an easy-to-use tile fixing product, Epox-easy. This is a convenient two-component epoxy adhesive and grout, which can be used for interior and exterior tiling applications on floors and walls. Epox-easy is specially formulated to fix tiles where very high bond strength, toughness or flexibility is required and for grouting where chemical resistance and/or complete non-permeability is required.  This product contains a unique pigmentation system, which effectively locks colour into the sand, reduces the risk of staining and makes the residue much easier to remove from the tiles. When set and solidly bedded it forms a robust layer, which is impermeable to liquids, resistant to chemicals, easy to sterilise, clean and maintain and is resilient to pressure washing.  Epox-easy is quick and simple to mix available in 5kg buckets and contains two components.
