OZONE USE IN DENTISTRY Ozone (O3) is a natural gas, derived from oxygen that has been used for over 100 years around the world to help heal a whole myriad of health problems, especially infection. tests the urine for 12 different neurotransmitters that are basically the gas pedals and brake pedals of your brain and your inflammatory symptoms. The urine portion tests serotonin, 5HIAA which is a metabolite of the breakdown of serotonin; it tests GABA and taurine which are brake pedals for the brain; it tests glycine, glutamate and histamine, all of which can be hyper inflammatory and stimulating; it tests dopamine and DOPAC which is a metabolite of dopamine; it tests epinephrine and norepinephrine which can be either involved in anxiety or slow metabolism, and it tests PEA which is involved in focus and concentration. What I found was that my GABA was really low. That is the chemical that your brain uses to put the brakes on. So, because I had no brakes, I couldn't sleep and always felt anxious, if not severely anxious. PSYLLIUM AND BENTONITE: An Internal Cleanse that Packs a One-Two Punch Like a broom, psyllium sweeps waste from the colon; bentonite grabs toxins like a magnet as it passes through the digestive system. The human body is perfectly capable of cleaning and filtering out impurities, but due to the overwhelming amount of toxins that we are exposed to today, many in the medical community agree that an internal cleanse is now essential for optimum health. "It is very necessary because our world is so toxic. We are ingesting, breathing, and coming into contact externally with toxins all day long and there are more environmental toxins than there has ever been and it's growing," says Dr. Tom Ziegler, a pharmacist at the Medicap Pharmacy in Ashburn, VA. Working synergistically with psyllium, bentonite attracts toxins like a magnet through a chemical adsorption process, in which the surfaces of toxins and bentonite bind together when they touch along the body's digestive tract. Through adsorption, toxins adhere to bentonite's large, porous, ion-charged surface to draw environmental pollutants out of the body when it passes from the colon. In numerous studies, bentonite has demonstrated it can bind with and remove heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, pathogenic viruses, heavy metals, and other toxins from the body. Research-Based Exercise Prescription: High Intensity Interval Training Part 3 High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is exercise characterized by short bursts of vigorous activity interspersed with periods of rest or low-intensity exercise for recovery. This type of exercise is well established as an important part of training for start-stop athletes like tennis, basketball and soccer players because it mimics the demands of their sport. There is also ample evidence to suggest that HIIT benefits endurance athletes who work at a constant pace; for example, middle- and long-distance runners. However, two recent articles in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise document the successful implementation of HIIT in a population that would seem to be the least likely candidates for this form of training. That the use of HIIT for cardiac patients is counterintuitive exemplifies why it is important to look to the research when determining the appropriate course of action with respect to exercise. Last installment, I set the stage for one of these studies, which involved comparing HIIT with conventional endurance training in patients with documented coronary artery disease. In this study, Currie et al. had patients in one group cycle continuously at a moderate pace (58% of their peak power output) with duration progressed from 30 to 50 minutes over the 12-week training intervention. This type of regimen is the current standard of care in cardiac rehabilitation. The other group performed 10 one-minute "work" intervals at 89% of peak power output with one-minute recovery intervals at 10% in between. The important difference was that one group worked continuously for an extended period at a moderate level of exertion while the other worked intermittently for a shorter amount of time at a high level. Another difference was that the 20-minute HIIT sessions were not lengthened over the course of the study. Instead, progression involved increasing power output during work intervals so that the individual's heart rate response (and, by extension, the relative challenge associated with the effort) remained constant as conditioning improved. However, a similarity was that both groups trained three times per week performing two supervised sessions and one that was unsupervised. When the training intervention was complete and results were tabulated, the endurance group had performed twice as much work as the HIIT group. Specifically, the long duration moderate training required an average of 172 kJ of work per session compared to 88 for HIIT. It is, therefore, not surprising that bodyweight decreased more for the endurance group. However, the HIIT group achieved higher average heart rates with values reaching 73% of their age-predicted max. The end result was that despite the lesser duration, HIIT subjects achieved similar increases in fitness. For example, the maximum rate at which the patients could consume oxygen (i.e., VO2peak, which is a measure of cardio-respiratory fitness) increased similarly in both groups as did the VO2 at

which their "anaerobic threshold" occurred. This is important because this marker defines the breakpoint between sustainable and non-sustainable work. Both training regimens also elicited similar improvements in the peak power output at which subjects could cycle. While the performance enhancements documented above reflect an enhanced functional capacity, it is also important to consider exercise-induced changes that could improve health status in these patients. In this regard, the researchers assessed flowmediated dilation of the brachial artery to non-invasively determine endothelial function of the coronary arteries. A well-functioning cardiovascular system has the ability to increase blood vessel diameter when necessary and, conversely, endothelial dysfunction is associated with the presence and severity of coronary artery disease. Once again, HIIT measured up in this assessment as absolute and relative flow-mediated dilation were increased by both forms of training with no difference between groups. Finally, resting diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were decreased by a similar amount after both forms of training. The bottom line is that all of the positive changes that occurred due to conventional endurance training were also present after a HIIT program that required less time and total work. What is more, there were no adverse events reported and adherence in the HIIT group was similar to that in the endurance group. In addition to implications regarding safety, this suggests that the high-intensity nature of HIIT does not reduce the likelihood that subjects at risk for dropout will stick with their program. To put these findings into perspective, previous research suggests a 12% improvement in survival rate for every increase in VO2peak of 3.5 mL/kg/min. In the present study, 12 weeks of HIIT improved this parameter by 4.7 mL/kg/min. This means that a time investment of only 60 minutes per week could lengthen these patients' lives considerably. Furthermore, increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are associated with persistently-impaired brachial artery flow-mediated dilation capacity; e.g., a relative value less than 5.5%. Interestingly, in the present study, pre-training values were less than this standard, which suggests that these subjects were at risk for future cardiovascular events. However, post-training, group averages were above 5.5%, which also supports the notion that these exercise interventions can dramatically improve the future prognosis for these patients. The authors conclude by noting that lack of time is often cited as one of the major barriers to exercise adherence in cardiac patients. Consequently, time efficient HIIT might provide a more appropriate way to infer long-term health benefits in these individuals. Even though the future is unknown, what is coming is almost a no-brainer. Everyone will be obligated to obtain medical coverage, but not obligated to use it. Now why would you not want to use something you bought? You bought car insurance, but don't want to use it, right? Why not? Because of deductibles (which nobody wants to lay out) and penalties after its use (rate hikes). Take a look at the mandated medical mirage. Today is today. Tomorrow is the eye-opener. Using the future medical coverage may be more expensive both financially and health-wise. Our deductibles are going to vary from a few thousand dollars to 5 or 6 thousand dollars, depending upon what you feel you want to spend. Co-payments are going to increase $50 or more for a specialist, if you can get to see one when you want or need one. The term "health insurance" is really emergency medical intervention due to personally ignoring your own health. The science of strength for maximum health, fitness, vitality and age management is my life-long personal passion. From the doctors and nurses I work with, I am told that roughly 70% of patient visits are lifestyle oriented or at least mostly avoidable, i.e., aches, pains, blood pressure, cholesterol, pre-diabetes, orthopedic, blood sugar, fat gain, and low energy. Now you are aboard the medical merry-go-round of visits, deductibles and drug payouts. All to address something that was totally avoidable if you had a real health plan. What I mean is a self-motivated addition to your lifestyle called exercise. Both will cost money. The difference is the medical plan addresses the symptoms - aches, pains, high blood sugar, etc., with drugs that do not address the reason for the symptoms and are married to a list of side effects for which other drugs are available to address the side effects. You are dumping money into a medical money pit. It is cheaper to buy a yacht and moor it in the desert (it costs a lot to go nowhere). This is not the wisest plan for money spent towards health. I just described medical intervention, NOT HEALTHCARE. Healthcare is getting and remaining healthy, sexy, vital and energetic and being able to enjoy the things you did when you were younger, like dinner, dancing and burning the midnight oil. To me, your healthcare plan should include an exercise professional with knowledge, experience, and who is credible enough to put your own lack of exercise science and knowledge to the test. One of the main reasons for lack of favorable results is confusion about what works. In my 50 years as a physical culturist, I have learned that exercise is not faith-based; it is science-based. If what you are doing is not working or if it hurts too much, then there is a missing element in your formula. To me your exercise plan (health plan) is your physical 401k (your physical and mental future existence). The law says you must buy medical insurance, but the law does not mandate you to use it. At the same time, the law does not mandate you to care for your own health. You are now left with an unavoidable choice. You can spend your hard-earned money on symptom-related medical intervention or you can spend it on youthful related problem prevention for total physical betterment (your 401k). SNOOZE TO LOSE: The Sleep/Weight Loss Correlation Pssst! There's a secret to weight loss and it's not an expensive home gym or the latest Nike sneakers. It's sleep! When it comes to health and wellness, sleep is an often overlooked aspect of human well-being. Not only is sleep important for a balanced lifestyle, quality sleep is a major factor in achieving ultimate overall health. Always Choose JOY (Even When the Odds are Against You)! How does a family with a chronically or fatally ill child enjoy life? Is it possible for laughter and joy to coexist with suffering and grief? My family knows all too well the bittersweet joy that comes with celebrating a child's life - a milestone event, a birthday, a graduation, another holiday, yet, living day-to-day knowing your child is living on borrowed time. We are The Hardys. My name is Kathy and I've been married to Tom for 32 years. We have eight children between the ages of 27 and 13 and three of them have serious, chronic illnesses. David, 24, TJ, 22 and McKenna, 20 have cystic fibrosis (CF), a life shortening, progressive disease of the lungs and digestive system. McKenna also has cystic fibrosis related diabetes (CFRD). McKenna, a full-time student, works part-time in a clothing store, attends a weekly Bible study, and is a youth volunteer, model and actress. TJ has moved in with his 97 year old, blind great-grandmother, helping with cooking, cleaning and caregiving. He volunteers at church as a gardener, barista, and choir member, he rings hand bells and performs with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus. David has been a valuable member of a premier hand bell ensemble for three years and also played drum set for various groups. But this past summer, he went into semi-retirement due to his failing health. This, of course, has been a source of great pain, especially for me. What do you do when your sick child's world keeps shrinking? How do you handle the grief when your child has to give up more and more cherished activities because their illness is progressing? How do you face the milestones and birthdays and holidays, knowing it may be their last? Recently, I attended a concert that David used to participate in and I saw that his absence necessitated a replacement. Seeing that David's condition was worsening while other people's lives were going on without him, caused me tremendous grief. Then I recalled what Abraham Lincoln said: "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." I decided to feel my grief and then move on to enjoy the beautiful music and the company I was with. I have found that it is important to acknowledge my own feelings and also to validate the feelings of other members of my family, especially the ill child. I never say "you shouldn't feel that way" or "don't cry." Unpleasant feelings are not bad feelings. They are as much a part of being human as the more pleasant emotions. help find something that makes his life worth living. If he is too tired or sick, I have learned it is respectful to accept that, too. Even with all the health challenges, our family has learned to find ways to decrease our grief and increase our joy. The key is to live as normally as possible and to express gratitude for each blessing in our lives instead of investing time and energy lamenting what is lost. We react to life with humor, sarcasm, laughter and tears. We act in musical productions together and when someone is ill, we sit quietly and watch movies together. We play together, fight with each other and fight for each other. We tease each other relentlessly and love each other fiercely, like when Shannon makes banana bread for David in the middle of the night. Some other specific things that multiply our joy are music (making it, listening to it, discussing it), playing with and laughing at our pets and most significantly, our faith. We have six cats, two dogs and a pot-bellied pig. The love exchanged between the animals and humans improves the quality of life for all of us. And the joy and serenity that our faith brings makes us all secure in our future on this planet and into eternity. I encourage you to search for a belief system that brings you peace. While celebrating the holidays that just passed, I prepared everyone's favorite dishes and observed the traditions that are most meaningful to each person. We were aware that this holiday may just have been our child's last, however, living in the moment gave us an uncompromised strength. We are all here today so we will enjoy each other today. We live in a way that brings few regrets and forgive each other and ourselves when we don't get things quite right. The bottom line? Treat every person every day as if it were their last. Pack all the love and joy you can into today. As author Erma Bombeck says, "Don't save the good china for only one day a year. If it gets broken, so what! It's only stuff. And wear your favorite outfit. Don't wait for a special occasion. Today is a special occasion." The people you love are worth loving fully, abundantly, extravagantly. No one knows when their last day will be. So do what my friend, Nancy Payton, has taught me: Celebrate Everything! ON THE COVER: Julieanna Hever, Veria TV Show Host on Vegan Living Q: Were you always healthy/how did you become a believer in plant-based nutrition (personal health crises, raised that way)? A: I suffered with gastrointestinal issues for many years, without any proper diagnosis. After 20 years of misery, ER visits, and doctor’s appointments, I figured out I had food allergies. To this day, it boggles my mind that no physician ever asked about my diet. Further, I was a dancer and pursuing a career in acting. Managers, agents, and dance teachers were always advising me to lose weight. So, I attempted pretty much every weight loss diet over the majority of my life. Truly, a whole food, plant-based diet solved everything. Q: What made you decide to go vegan (animal lover/health, etc.) A: My initial interest in vegetarianism began as a teenager, when I read John Robbins' Diet For a New America and learned about how animals raised for food were treated and its environmental impact. Reading this book and many others changed my connection with food. When I discovered how brilliantly a vegan diet supported health too, I recognized the win-win-win across the board and put all the pieces together for me. Q: People don’t realize, but meat consumption is very detrimental to their health and planet. Please explain: A: The numbers are shocking of how profoundly the production of 70 billion plus animals a year impacts the environment. It’s the number one cause of greenhouse gas emissions; uses up almost half the world’s available land mass; is toxifying, depleting, and acidifying our oceans and leading to massive fresh water shortages, rainforest destruction and record losses of biodiversity. Essentially, we are using up all of our irreplaceable resources and infusing our air, water, and land with toxic chemicals that last decades or centuries to meet the consumer demands of animal products. Q: Explain how conventional factory farming is sooo unhealthy and terribly inhumane: A: Because of this insatiable desire, farmers are forced to use inhumane, filthy, horrific, and dangerous methods to raise animals for food. Livestock production is the number one cause of antibiotic overuse (leading us to increasingly more antibiotic-resistant superbugs causing lethal infections in humans) because 70-80% of all antibiotics are used in these healthy animals to prevent them from getting sick while living and dying under such confined, unnatural conditions. Plus, they feed animals foods they are not meant to consume (editor’s note: grain instead of grass and meat by-products from animals) along with steroids and hormones to fatten them up faster and expedite production. These animals live fearful, torturous existences. All of those stress hormones, infections, steroids, and toxins are built in to the products that end up on the plate. That’s in addition to the health-damaging elements of animal products that come naturally, like saturated fat, cholesterol, and insulin-like growth factor 1. A: For me, the only challenge is the social element, especially while trying to raise kids. People are protective about their food and just knowing you are choosing to avoid animal products automatically inspires others to self-reflect on their dietary choices. I never judge anyone for what they eat and most of my friends and family are not vegan. But, slowly, simply by paying attention, everyone around me starts to make changes in this direction. Witnessing that subtle movement towards eating less animals and more whole plants bring me great joy. Q: How challenging it was for you to go thru the traditional RD training where they still rely on the antiquated government Food Pyramid? A: I learned a tremendous amount in graduate school that supported my diet and helped prepare me for all that I understand and practice now. I simply created my own food guide pyramid and plate when I left school. Biochemistry, food science, and research analysis are among the infinite tools gained in school that are necessary to navigate the nutrition world. Q: What are your best suggestions for going vegan? Should you start with a flexitarian diet, move to vegetarian, then onto vegan, etc? A: Some people prefer jumping in “cold tofu,” while others need to dip their toes and progress. There is no right or wrong way and you can’t go wrong with adding more whole plants into your meals. Q: What are some easy vegan meal ideas that are fast, easy to prepare? A: I can go on and on about the infinite options of fabulous vegan cuisine. Some of my favorites include Indian and Ethiopian stews, hummus with everything, salads with tahini-based dressings, veggie sushi, burritos and rice bowls with veggies, beans, rice, and guacamole, veggie burgers with baked fries; and pasta with a cashew cheese or marinara sauce. Q: What do you personally do to stay healthy every day (exercise, diet, supplementation, mental/emotional/spiritual well being)? A: Exercising brings me mental clarity, so I try to do something at least 5 days a week. I drink tea and water throughout the day, eat lots of fresh and cooked vegetables, beans, and whole grains. I also find that I do best when I eat only 2 meals a day. I supplement with vitamin B12, vitamin D during the winter, and probiotics sometimes.
