PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I trust everyone enjoyed the warm summer months and I hope that you all had a chance to experience the beauty and relaxation that your parks have to offer. Your Park System currently is comprised of 36 parks and facilities. Your Park District Grounds-Maintenance Staff works hard to keep all the parks and facilities in tip-top shape, and it looks like their workload just got an increase. On May 25, 2011, your Park District received official confirmation from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, that we are one of 36 Park Districts to be approved for grant money through the “Open Space Land Acquisition Development” (OSLAD) program. This $372,000 in grant money will be used to redevelop the Countryview/Royal Meadows Park. This 16.5 acre park will be unique in the fact that it links two neighborhoods with the use of a nature boardwalk, while at the same time offering tennis courts, picnic shelters, open play areas, and a skate park. The size and cost of this park dictates that the development will be over two years. Therefore, look for the grand opening to be sometime in 2013. We have been fortunate to have the support of our local elected officials down in Springfield during the grant application process; with their help and the support of the IDNR staff, we have partnered up to protect over 83 acres of open space and develop over $2.7 million in projects. This type of investment not only helps our economy, but also improves the quality of life in our community. We, the Board of Commissioners, are also proud to announce that for the third consecutive year, your Park District has been awarded the prestigious “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.” This Certificate indicates the highest standard in governmental accounting and financial reporting. This certified program, which started in 1946, is very difficult to attain. All the praise goes to your Executive Director and Staff. They are the ones that must account for every dollar of the taxpayers’ money. Let’s keep up the good work and strive for a fourth year. Before I end this letter, I would like to mention a few Recreation Programs that might peak your interest: First, don’t forget our 5th Annual “Because You Can” Walk slated for Saturday, October 15th. The walk begins at 9:00am and all net proceeds benefit Children’s Memorial Hospital. Second, and new this fall, is a Ladies Weightlifting class. This 45-minute program will focus on how to strengthen and tone the body. Lastly, also new, is our “The Perfect Party” program. This is a themed birthday party geared towards kids ages three thru nine. The parties will last 1½ hours and the Park District does all the work! What a deal! For more details, please read the complete program descriptions found in this catalog.

Early Childhood Program Requirements • Children must be the correct age by 9/1/11, unless otherwise specified. In order to provide your child with the best possible recreational and/or learning experience, all of our programs are planned according to the ages listed in our brochure. • Classes are for child attending only, except for classes with an adult. Parents should not remain in the classroom or gymnasium after dropping off their child. This is in the child's best interest, as continual interruptions tend to affect participant's attention span and inhibit the establishment of peer relationships. • All children must be potty-trained, unless they are attending a class where an adult stays with them or otherwise stated in the class description. Diapers are not permitted in independent classes unless stated in the class description. • Please do not bring food to any class, unless previously arranged. • For your children's safety, all children enrolled in preschool-age programs must be picked up from the specific classroom or program site by their parents or designated guardian. No child will be released from the classroom to anyone other than these individuals. • A mandatory sign-in and sign-out procedure for all participants is required for all Park District Programs.

Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA) has been providing adaptive recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities through a cooperative agreement with Frankfort, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox and Peotone Park Districts for over 35 years. As a member of a special recreation association, each park district is able to levy special recreation funds to financially support LWSRA and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A variety of recreation-based activities are offered year-round for between 160 and 230 children and adults with disabilities, including services such as day camps, trips, Special Olympics, after-school programs, social programs, adaptive sports, a fitness program for veterans with a disability, an adult day program and many other opportunities. These programs significantly heighten participants' health, well-being, and quality of life. Transportation is provided for many activities in an LWSRA paratransit bus. Programs are developed with the intention of eliminating any leisure barriers and to facilitate the participants in developing a balance of leisure and socialization skills, increasing recreation resources and opportunities and promoting knowledge and independence. Through the cooperative agreements with the park districts and other organizations, LWSRA is able to serve children and adults, in the five district area and surrounding communities, who have learning disabilities, physical impairments, cognitive disabilities, behavior problems, visual impairments, autism, multiple challenges or other special needs. All ages, ethnicities and income levels are welcomed by a friendly, well-trained staff. Inclusion aides are provided, upon request and an interview, for those who find it may be a good fit to participate, with assistance, in a regular park district program. Scholarships are available for residents needing financial support to participate in LWSRA programs.

For more information, or to request a brochure, visit www.lwsra.org or call the office at 815.464.2811. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9am until 5pm. The office is located at 21800 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort.
