Eaglescliffe is a small town in the ceremonial county of Co Durham which is located just North of the river Tees. Eaglescliffe is a residential town which boasts tree lined streets and well established family properties. It is 1.5 miles from the historic town of Yarm with its wide range of facilities including shops, banks, cafes and community facilities. Conveniently located Eaglescliffe Railway Station is 280 yards from the site with regular services to Darlington, Newcastle and Middlesbrough, whilst bus stops situated 130 yards from the site provide easy access to Yarm and Stockton. Timothy Hackworth was the first engineer to establish the steam engine as a completely reliable machine. Born in 1786, Hackworth worked with George Stephenson on the ‘Locomotion’ before becoming manager of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Subsequently, Hackworth formed the Soho locomotive building company at Shildon. He died in 1850. The route of the original Stockton to Darlington railway passed through the grounds of Timothy Hackworth Court.
