Woodlands, sandy beaches, parks, gardens, coastal paths; historic Carmarthenshire known as the Garden of Wales more than lives up to its reputation as a county of exciting contrasts. Situated above Carmarthen Bay, the pleasant coastal town of Kidwelly itself provides the ideal location from which to explore some of the timeless landscapes to be found within the region, including the Pembrokeshire National Park, the Brecon Beacons and the Gower Peninsula. With its history steeped in legend and stretching back to at least the twelfth century, Kidwelly is dominated by its imposing castle overlooking the River Gwendraeth. Now more a centre for tourism, the town enjoyed significant growth during the Industrial Revolution both as a busy port and for its own brick and tinworks, and echoes of this phase in its history can be seen in Kidwelly Industrial Museum.

Leisure opportunities abound, including the annual Kidwelly Carnival, a local nature reserve at Glen yr Afon, the Kymer Canal, golfing, Pembrey Circuit for motorsports and Ffos Las, Britain’s newest racecourse and equestrian centre. Just three miles away, stunning Pembrey Country Park boasts 202 hectares of dunes, forestry, and parkland to explore, as well as offering a variety of sporting activities. Just ten miles away lies the pleasant shopping town of Llanelli, whilst slightly further afield both Carmarthen and Swansea offer a multitude of shops and other entertainment possibilities, with the bright lights of Cardiff around 67 miles away or 90 minutes by train. A regular bus service links Kidwelly to Llanelli, Carmarthen and Swansea, whilst Kidwelly railway station, just a short walk from the town centre, offers services to Carmarthen, Swansea, Cardiff, Manchester and London Paddington.

Today the town is a thriving community supporting a good mix of independent shops, pubs and a restaurant, whilst residents are also well served by a doctors’ surgery, veterinary practice, sports centre, library and post office as well as two primary schools.
