Kingston Mills Bradford on Avon

Like all historic English towns, Bradford on Avon is not a snapshot of a single era in the past, frozen in time as an antique ‘specimen’. You cannot say it is a ‘Georgian’ town, or a ‘Victorian’ one. Instead, it is a rich and detailed tapestry, interwoven with over a thousand years of history. From its Saxon and Norman churches, its medieval bridges, its fine Georgian buildings and street scenes, and the many influences of the Victorian industrial revolution, Bradford on Avon has preserved much of the best of English history – and, of course, it continues to evolve. Kingston Mills is a perfect example. During the early 19th century, the town’s prosperity from the wool and textiles industry was in serious decline. Its fortunes were revived by the arrival of the rubber industry in 1848, and this particular area is now being carefully refurbished and sensitively redeveloped as a collection of new and refurbished homes, shops, cafes, and riverside open spaces. Today, the town is a delightful melange of honey coloured Bath stone, ornate wrought iron, handsome Lime trees and the ever-present sparkle of the River Avon, as it winds through the town.

“The river, a ribbon bringing life to the town, tying the past with the present” Helen Locke

“Under the fish & over the water” local saying referring to the ‘lock up’ on the Town Bridge, with its fish weathervane.

Right in the centre of the town, alongside the river at the northern end of the Town Bridge and Chapel – a Grade 1 listed monument – Kingston Mills is in a perfect location. It will consist of 171 homes, a mixture of one and two bedroom apartments and three and four bedroom homes, plus shops, cafes, offices and public open space – and possibly a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists across the river to the Library. It’s something of a bonus that residents of the development could be working in the town, perhaps in one of the new offices, and live so close by. This is a highly desirable place to live, close to the specialist shops and delightful open air cafes and restaurants of the town centre and surrounding old streets. There are award-winning tea rooms, ancient, welcoming pubs and convenient traditional shops all within a very short walk.

Bradford on Avon has everything you need for everyday life. There are schools for all ages, a Sainsbury’s supermarket, good sports and leisure facilities including a swimming pool, and a wealth of places to eat and drink. Getting out and about is easy – Bath is 8 miles away, Devizes 10 miles and Salisbury is 30 miles. The M4 motorway (Junction 18) is 15 miles away. You could walk to Bradford on Avon station from Kingston Mills, for services to Bath and Salisbury. London Paddington is 1hr 50 minutes – change at Bath, and London Waterloo is 2hrs 30 minutes. There’s no shortage of things to do and places to visit. In the town centre is a very fine, Grade 1 early 14th century Tithe Barn, and a little further on is the canal wharf and lock – always a popular spot. The canal-side towpath is used by many people for a pleasant walk or cycle ride into Bath. The city’s historic attractions and bustling shops are always worth a visit and there is also the beautiful Wiltshire and Somerset countryside to explore. All in all you’ll love living in Bradford on Avon – especially in a beautiful new Linden home at Kingston Mills.
