Warminster originates from Saxon Times, when a settlement sprang up within the loop of the Were, a tributary to the River Wylye. The surrounding downs were occupied by Iron Age people who left their earthworks, including hill forts and barrow mounds. In the Middle Ages the town became famous not only for its wool and cloth trade but also for its great prosperity as a corn market. The town has maintained its links as a military centre, particularly with regard to the Warminster Training Centre (formerly the School of Infantry). The prosperity gained from corn and cloth gave rise to much of the architecture which survives in the town centre today including the 18th century Teddington House, a former wool store.
