The Location

World Heritage Site – New Lanark

Lanark is a proud, bustling market town whose weekly farming market is one of the largest and best-known in Scotland. It also attracts worldwide attention every June for Lanimer Day, an ancient and colourful celebration dating back to the year 1140. This major, six-day pageant involves processions, entertainment, a grand ball and the Riding of the Marches when the Lord Cornet, who’s chosen every year, examines the March stones on the east and south sides of the town on horseback. This charming Clyde Valley town is where William “Braveheart” Wallace "first drew sword to free his native land" in 1297. The St Kentigern’s Church ruins in the town date back to 1180, and Wallace reputedly got married here to Marion Braidfute, surviving heiress of a prominent local man. Lanark was also the first meeting place of the Scots Parliament in 978.
