In just a few weeks, the 41st Ryder Cup will be contested at Hazeltine National Golf Club located in Chaska, Minnesota. Over 250,000 golf enthusiasts will flock to Hazeltine from September 27th – October 2nd, with matches beginning on Friday the 30th. Over the last 87 years, and 40 matches, the U.S. is 25-13-2 winning 22 of the first 25 matches. Over the last 30 years, however, the European Team has dominated the U.S. team by winning 11 of 15 matches. The first Ryder Cup, held at Worcester Country Club in 1927, was captained by Walter Hagen who captained the U.S. team for 6 consecutive matches. They were played in front of very small crowds of private club members with no public invited. Matches in the U.S. and Europe over the last two decades have grown to hundreds of thousands of spectators. The format over the 3 day event is match play, foursomes, four ball, and the final day is singles matches. Each team carries 12 players lead by a team captain and co-captains. U.S. Captain, Davis Love III, has chosen Tom Lehman, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods to serve as team strategist. The Ryder Cup is golf’s most compelling rivalry and playing for one’s country in this event is the most sought after goal of every player in the game. While the Olympics had recently introduced golf to its summer games, it will never hold the status of this 87-year old epic event. I for one feel the U.S. team may have finally taken the steps necessary to prepare and manage a strong team that can dominate once again against the very diverse European squad. The European team is now assembled from countries in Great Britain, Europe and possibly Australia moving forward. It is an international challenge every two years that will demand the very best to bring the cup home to the U.S.
