The New Astrology?

Human Design Reveals DNA of Your True Nature

handed all the answers at birth. Yet this imagined scene explains the essence of Human Design — a new system that breaks down and details the DNA of your true nature.

The New Astrology

magine, at the exact moment of birth, being handed a piece of paper. “This information is for you and you alone,” whispers a messenger sent by the universe. “It is your reliable guide — and secret — to carry through life.” Before being welcomed into the outside world, you look down at this document — a map-like illustration full of diagrams, shapes, colors, lines and numbers. Your soul, about to embark on its journey,

is curious. The messenger smiles and says, “This is your design for life — all you need to know about yourself for the years ahead is in here.” If only life were as simple as being

The Human Design System

This system is, in my mind, the successor to astrology because it works in a similar way — making a calculation based on birth data — but that’s where the similarity ends. With Human Design, two calculations are made — one at the moment of birth and also one for three months prior to birth when, it is said, the neocortex in the brain is turned on. That is a fundamental addition that brings with it a fascinating dimension. The system produces a life chart, which is a literal map of your inner-being, but instead of creating a one-size-fits-all star sign, it pin points your precise make-up — the secret ingredients of your individuality. Whereas a Pisces is a Pisces and a Libra is a Libra, your Human Design creates a personality blueprint as unique as a fingerprint. It is not primarily predictive — instead, it shows you how to be the author of your own destiny. Human Design takes the torch from astrology and carries insights to the next level because it is more individually specific than astrology. That’s why we say: Forget your sign, what’s your design? This information is the buried treasure that lies deep within each of us, and it finally helps answer the age-old question: Who am I? It is a system ripe for a new age — the Aquarian Age — when individuals, and especially women, are reinvigorated and empowered in discovering their unique groove in life.

Does Human Design Really Work? Human Design is being touted as the new astrology, but does it really work? I signed up for a free reading with Chetan Parkyn, author of Human Design, hoping to find out if the system works. The verdict: This system so accurately described me that it was a little eerie, but ultimately, it was an enlightening tool for understanding my life’s path. There are three keys to understanding the Human Design chart: Type. There are five types, and knowing which is yours provides the basis for living in alignment with your nature. Authority: We each make decisions in different ways, according to our authority. Through the Human Design process, you discover which of the six authorities is yours. Profile: The 12 profiles describe the ways you interact with others and how to effectively relate with the world around you. My type is a manifesting generator (MG), which Parkyn describes as someone who needs to listen to her gut response before taking action. Then I can go from zero to 60 mph in four seconds and leave rubber

burning on the road. It’s nice to be understood. Other famous MGs include George Lucas, Salman Rushdie and Mother Teresa. My authority key is emotional clarity, which means that when something feels right, intuition will guide me. My decision-making process hinges on finding that still point that Buddha calls “the middle way.” My mantra: Feel it, don’t think it. My profile is a 4/1, which means that I have a fixed fate vibration — I have one path, one purpose, one perspective. I need to stick to my path and follow my heart. What is my fixed fate? Power, and I’m here to speak my truth, just like Mary Queen of Scots, Gianni Versace and Peter Sellers (so walk like a queen, dress like a queen and most of all, keep my sense of humor on my path of power). Using my intuition as my power base, I now realize that it’s right for me to be so spirit-driven in what I do. I seek inner guidance for all of my actions and plans. What did I take away from the Human Design chart? It’s good to be me, standing strong in my intuitive power. — Vicky Thompson

Lose Your Mind, Recreate Your Life An Interview with Dr. Joe Dispenza By Linda M. Potter

is role in the landmark quantum physics film, What the Bleep Do We Know!?, made Dr. Joe Dispenza a metaphysical rock star. His groundbreaking mind/body connection work in the bestselling book, Evolve Your Brain, has earned him a reputation as one of the leading authori-

First discovered in 1987, Human Design fuses the four ancient wisdoms of astrology, I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system to become an entity on its own. In 1973, researchers found that there is an established link between the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and the 64 genetic codons in DNA. Therefore, the direct correlation between the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and the 64 gates contained within Human Design represents the DNA of your soul as intended for this lifetime. This system is part science, part spirituality. Working from your time, date and place of birth, it reveals gems such as how to successfully direct your life, how you make winning decisions, and how to ensure fulfillment in life and relationships. In a word, it reveals your true potential.

ties on the interconnectedness of the brain, the mind, the body and consciousness. He is also a working chiropractor, and a living testament to the transformative power of the brain. When he invites you in his new book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, to “lose your mind and create a new one,” he isn’t asking you to do anything he hasn’t done himself. At age 23, facing the possibility of permanent paralysis after a spine-crushing bicycle accident, Dispenza was faced with a life-changing decision. His doctors believed that his only hope of walking again was a surgical procedure which, even if successful, could leave him permanently disabled and in constant pain. Dispenza refused the procedure, opting instead to recreate his own physical body by literally “changing his mind.” Ten weeks later, without surgery, he was back at work, completely healed and pain-free. Now Dispenza is out to change the way the world thinks. What is consciousness and how does it relate to the quantum field? Consciousness is a level of awareness about ourselves and the environment. When we pay attention to what we’re experiencing in the outside world and what we’re experiencing in our inside world, and then use our brain to create meaning between the two, we are conscious. Consciousness is awareness. When we are aware of ourselves, it allows us to begin to pay attention to how we think, how we act and how we feel. Because we can notice and

Rid Yourself of ANTs By Wendy Oden

ven if your house is spotless, you may have an ANT problem. Not the little black ones, but automatic negative thoughts (ANTs). Like the real-life insects, these brain bugs are just as invasive and even more destructive. They infest our outlook on life and eat away at our peace of mind. ANTs take a toll on our health. Stress and anxiety have been proven to kill neurons in the brain and even prevent the creation of new ones. When you are extremely stressed, the dendrites in the brain can actually shrink, causing your mind to go blank. A simple mind body balancing technique called brain wave vibration stops my ANTs in their tracks. It combines ancient healing practices and energy training methods from Korea with modern scientific understanding of the brain. It incorporates three distinct elements: deliberately making vibrations in your body, allowing your body to ride the rhythm, and following the flow of energy to reach states of deep relaxation similar to that achieved through traditional forms of sitting mediation. Try the head nod method: Sit-up straight with your arms at your sides. Close your eyes and breathe comfortably, relaxing your body completely. Begin to gently shake your head from side to side. Breathe naturally and fully, emphasizing the exhalation, as you envision all tension draining from your body. Focus on your brain stem at the base of your neck. You may hear slight noises or popping sounds at the base of your skull. This is normal. Allow your head to move up and down, side to side, or even in the shape of an infinity symbol as you go deeper into the motion. After a few minutes, slow to a stop, take a deep breath and return to your external awareness. Wendy Oden, a freelance writer based in Sedona, can be reached at woden9@commspeed. net. All Faiths Coexist at Celebration Church

t Celebration Church, people of all faiths are welcome — literally. The Wilsonville, Ore.-based church celebrates all religions and paths at their CoExist Celebration, which meets throughout the year at different locations around the Portland metro area. The goal of the gatherings? To celebrate all faiths as unique expressions of one truth — love. Priests, rabbis, monks, ministers and teachers of all faiths join together in the common pursuit of peace, peace of mind, and peace of planet. Each CoExist Celebration features soulful music, ceremony and the wisdom taken from all religions. The church invites Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Bahá’ís, Hindus, Muslims and more to be a part of the experience. Never been to a mosque before? The events are held at different venues, including synagogues, mosques, churches, art museums, theatrical stages and even outdoors, giving people a chance to feel spirit in new places. “The Northwest is the least ‘churched’ area in the country. Coexist Celebration is a spiritual experience, not religious,” says Rev. Barry Dennis, who founded Celebration Church in 2005. “CoExist consciousness is an organic movement that has shown up out of a new consciousness arising on the planet. As the planet gets smaller every day, we don’t really have a choice — coexist or perish.” Celebration Church is a Christian-based spiritual community founded on the principle of honoring all faiths that teach love. The church shares many tenets with the New Thought movement. Awakening the Rainbow Warrior By Mara Berendt Friedman

alking S tick My best prayers have sometimes been the ones uttered at the end of my rope. Desolate and desperate prayers, usually with my head leaning on my steering wheel. Those prayers have been pretty much my “Lord, look down here” prayers. Or simply my relinquishing of the moment, realizing I really had no control over the situation. And that, no matter what, he would be there. — River Jordan, author of Praying for Strangers 4

n 2006, I met with my new friend, Trinity Harris, who guided me through a deep healing session. A few months later, I was awakened night after night with dream message fragments. I kept receiving this phrase: Rainbow warrior awaken! The answer is with the maiden. This potent message led to the creation of the Rainbow Warrior Awaken! card deck and

Editor’s Journey 2011: Return to Balance

Step 2: Affirm Your Commitment to Peace

he divine feminine has always been present in the world, but she’s been hidden — in the night of the moon’s energy, in the womb of creation in each mother and in the fertile fields of Mother Earth. Since the 20th Century began, three streams of divine feminine energy have been slowly returning to change the world’s mindset: compassion versus domination, nurturing versus betrayal and strength versus corruption. In 2011, a fourth Vicky Thompson divine feminine energy is emerging: balance versus power. This final energy completes the four pillars of the divine feminine way: compassion, nurturing, strength and balance. Join us on the editor’s journey to create this new way of living. Returning to balance takes six simple steps: 1) Open to the balanced heart. 2) Affirm your commitment to peace. 3) Remember the inner warrior. 4) Create a new personal balance paradigm. 5) Practice the way of compassion. 6) Celebrate the reunion of the masculine and feminine. Today, your task is to affirm your commitment to peace. Peace, which can seem so unattainable globally and personally, is best known by feeling it deeply in your heart. World peace is a noble goal, but inner peace is attainable right now. A peaceful heart at rest and at work radiates a unique glow, a glimmering radiance of soft green light. The heart chakra represents the center of your being, and a peaceful heart is afire with active healing energy. This glimmering light moves out from your being, touching all you meet. When you actively shine the living light of peace from your heart, you become an everyday peace maker. The key to healing others through the peace in your own heart

guidebook with Harris. I am filled with a sense of peace that I picked up the rainbow thread and followed it to a beautiful place. We are here on Mother Earth to develop compassion for self and other, as well as to discover what we love and to share our healing gifts. In doing so, we walk the rainbow way of beauty. When I speak of the rainbow way of beauty, I am dreaming of a reverent and authentic way of living on our planet that springs from cooperation and love. I am imagining a life guided by the light of spirit, in which our actions are in service to each other and to the health of our earth. My vision of healing is one that begins within the individual heart and ripples outward into the world, expanding beyond the universe. is simple: give your peace freely through thoughts, words and deeds throughout the day. Try this today: When you wake up in the morning, feel the peace of a deep, restful sleep fill your heart. Breathe deeply, filling your heart center with the radiance of peace. As you move through your daily tasks, take a moment to stop and breathe in that light of peace. Then focus on a friend, coworker or family member. Imagine this person wrapped in a golden orb. Say from your heart, Peace be with you, and let your light shine around this person. Feel the peace in your heart activating peace in the other person. When the going gets tough during the day, actively choose peace to guide you through the situation. For example, if you have a conflict with a coworker, rather than stewing in anger or resentment, take a deep breath and tap into your morning feeling of peace. Move into your heart center and let this peace become you. Listen to your heart, asking yourself, What would peace do? Let the answer or feeling wash through you. Staying in your heart center, let peace guide you to resolution, whether it’s visualizing your coworker surrounded by peace, or by extending the olive branch and resolving your conflicts. When expressed through the divine feminine energy of balance, peace is strength personified, and it comes from a strong sense of right living. Balance may require that you peacefully end a relationship, bring a strong presence of peaceful resolution to a difficult situation or even stand up for yourself in a powerful yet peace-loving way. Declare your commitment to peace by affirming: Peace begins with me. I open my heart of peace to all I meet. I am strong, I am peaceful, I am love. Stop, and Take Responsibility By Gangaji

igilance and responsibility is the capacity to take responsibility for the grace that has appeared within the individual life form called “you.” It’s not a duty or a should. I am not talking about anything that has weight or punishment attached to it. Vigilance is the capacity to take responsibility for where your attention is in the moment and to take responsibility when it habitually goes into the past and future. In general we are trained not to take responsibility. We are trained to know who we are and what reality is through our definitions, through others’ definitions, through cultural parameters, religious parameters and even spiritual parameters. We limit ourselves when we rely on knowing ourselves indirectly, through predetermined thought. When I met Papaji (who is also known as Sri H.W.L. Poonja, the Indian guru and teacher), he told me to stop. When I let that stop in, I recognized that he meant to stop every habit of defining myself. He meant to stop creating and recreating myself. What a monumental task that is, and yet it is absolutely immediate and simple. The truth of who we are is freshly revealed when we take responsibility for its direct discovery. Our responsibility as a particular life form to the consciousness that animates us, to life itself, is ongoing. What grace that we can be responsible to the life that is present within us and outside us, to the silent life that is the source of all our life. As the source of all thoughts, consciousness is naturally present before all thought, during any thought and after all thought. Our lives can be living proof of our capacity for responsibility. When the thinking mind reasserts itself and the habits of suffering come back to reclaim our allegiance,

we can always take responsibility to be aware of the habits of mind. In our awareness of internal narrative habits, we can take responsibility to stop the narrative and discover what is present. We can take responsibility to internally meet what we have habitually avoided, or fought, or hidden from ourselves. We can recognize when we turn our attention to defend a particular point of view or definition as reality. We will have points of view, of course — it is a part of being human — but when we embrace them as reality and decide that our reality conflicts with another’s reality, we forget to recognize that these are simply different points of view — multiple, infinite points of view — all arising from the same consciousness. If you are willing to take an instant to withdraw attention from whatever your internal dialogue is, to withdraw energy from whatever the latest point of view about your suffering is, it is immediately obvious what is here: the fullness, the richness and the love of oneself as conscious life. If there is an ongoing conversation about your pain and suffering, then you can take responsibility for the object of your attention. Where is your attention? The pain may not go away, but if you turn your attention to attention itself, you will discover that the spaciousness of consciousness has room for all feelings and sensations. The fullness of love, the fullness of beingness is always available, whatever the circumstances. Vigilance is the call of a lifetime, and our responsibility is in answering that call. True responsibility ends all excuses for remaining a victim of thoughts. If you feel victimized by thoughts and habitual patterns of reaction, then I invite you to discover how

... If you turn your attention to attention itself, you will discover that the spaciousness of consciousness has room for all feelings and sensations. The fullness of love, the fullness of beingness is always available, whatever the circumstances. that victimization is held in place. What habit of mind is being indulged? In recognizing the fruits of vigilance, the willingness to be “busted” and humbled is joyous. The idea that, “My life will start when I don’t have to be vigilant any more,” or “I won’t have to be vigilant when I reach a certain mark,” is really denial of the present moment’s opportunity for vigilance.

In hoping for an end to the need for vigilance, what is wanted? What emotion accompanies that hope? Where is it? Will you take responsibility for opening to that emotion fully, as you withdraw all internal dialogue associated with it? Will you meet what is here without hoping or knowing the outcome of such a meeting? We can naturally keep deep, true, lifelong vigil at the flame of consciousness. Being responsible to vigilance honors that which gives each of our particular life forms its intelligence, its very ability to think and to imagine. Vigilance is the relishing of honoring the source above the thoughts and fantasies born of that source. When we recognize that we have in some way denied our responsibility, we can bring it back into the center of the lifeblood of our awakening. Then we take responsibility for our continual awakening and for our inevitable mistakes. We can see that ignoring or defending our mistakes is irresponsible. Responsibility and vigilance require full attention, but they don’t require energy, and they don’t require effort. The surrender of effort — of what is being done, of what is being reached for, of what is being rejected, or of what is being hidden — reveals the fire of consciousness as the ever-present ground. Where is your attention in this very moment? If you’re attending to thoughts, let these words be a beacon to come home to yourself. What a blessing that your life can be the living vigil to that which is the ground of your life. Gangaji, author of The Diamond in Your Pocket, is an American-born teacher and author who has traveled the globe since 1990, speaking with spiritual seekers from all walks of life. Gangaji presents an open meeting in Portland on March 18 and a weekend workshop on March 19-20. Visit

Who’s the Emotional Vampire in Your Life? By Judith Orloff

s a physician, I’ve found that the biggest energy drain on my patients is relationships. Some relationships are positive and mood elevating. Others can suck optimism and serenity right out of you. I call these draining people “emotional vampires.” They do more than drain your physical energy. The malignant ones can make you believe you’re unworthy and Judith Orloff unlovable. Others inflict damage with smaller digs to make you feel bad about yourself. For instance, “Dear, I see you’ve put on a few pounds” or “You’re overly sensitive!” Suddenly they’ve thrown you off-center by prodding areas of shaky self-worth. To protect your energy, it’s important to combat draining people. The following strategies will help you identify and

combat emotional vampires from an empowered place.

Signs that You’ve Encountered an Emotional Vampire • Your eyelids are heavy — you’re ready for a nap. • Your mood takes a nosedive. • You want to binge on carbs or comfort foods. • You feel anxious, depressed or negative. • You feel put down.

Types of Emotional Vampires The narcissist. Their motto is “Me first.” Everything is all about them. They have a grandiose sense of self-importance and entitlement, hog attention and crave admiration. They’re dangerous because they lack empathy and have a limited capacity for unconditional love. If you don’t do things their way, they become punishing, withholding or cold.

Protect yourself: Keep your expectations realistic. These are emotionally limited people. Try not to fall in love with one or expect them to be selfless or love without strings attached. Never make your selfworth dependent on them or confide your deepest feelings to them. To successfully communicate, the hard truth is that you must show how something will be to their benefit. Though it’s better not to have to contend with this tedious ego stroking, if the relationship is unavoidable this approach works. The victim. These vampires grate on you with their “poor-me” attitude. The world is always against them, the reason for their unhappiness. When you offer a solution to their problems they always say, “Yes, but ….” You might end up screening your calls or purposely avoid them. As a friend, you may want to help but their tales of woe overwhelm you. Protect yourself: Set kind but firm limits. Listen briefly and tell a friend or relative,

The Science & Art of Transformation

“I love you but I can only listen for a few minutes unless you want to discuss solutions.” With a coworker sympathize by saying, “I’ll keep having good thoughts for things to work out.” Then say, “I hope you understand, but I’m on deadline and must return to work.” Then use “this isn’t a good time” body language such as crossing your arms and breaking eye contact to help set these healthy limits. The controller. These people obsessively try to control you and dictate how you’re supposed to be and feel. They have an opinion about everything. They’ll control you by invalidating your emotions if they don’t fit into their rulebook. They often start sentences with “You know what you need?” and then proceed to tell you. You end up feeling dominated, demeaned or put down. Protect yourself: The secret to success is never try to control a controller. Be healthily assertive, but don’t tell them what to do. You can say, “I value your advice but really need to work through this myself.” Be confident but don’t play the victim. The constant talker. These people aren’t interested in your feelings. They are only concerned with themselves. You wait for an opening to get a word in edgewise but it never comes. Or these people might physically move in so close they’re practically breathing on you. You edge backwards, but they step closer. Protect yourself: These people don’t respond to nonverbal cues. You must speak up and interrupt, as hard as that is to do. Listen for a few minutes. Then politely say, “I hate to interrupt, but please excuse me, I have to talk to these other people (or get to an appointment or go to the bathroom).” A much more constructive tactic than, “Keep quiet, you’re driving me crazy!” If this is a family member, politely say, “I’d love if you allowed me some time to talk to so I can add to the conversation.” If you say this neutrally, it can better be heard. The drama queen. These people have a flair for exaggerating small incidents into off-the-chart dramas. My patient Sarah was exhausted when she hired a new employee who was always late for work. One week he had the flu and “almost died.” Next, his car was towed, again. After this employee left her office, Sarah felt tired and used. Protect yourself: A drama queen doesn’t get mileage out of equanimity. Stay calm. Take a few deep breaths. This will help you not get caught up in the histrionics. Set kind but firm limits. Say, for example, “You must be here on time to keep your job. I’m sorry for all your mishaps, but work comes first.” To improve your relationships and increase your energy level, I suggest taking an inventory of people who give you energy and those that drain you. Try to spend time with the loving, nurturing people, and learn to set limits with those who drain you. This will enhance the quality of your life.

an you manage and potentially heal type 2 diabetes by changing your lifestyle and attitude? As a physician, I was intrigued when I heard about the experience of Rita Sandler, an Oregon-based host of the TV show Rita’s Room, who worked diligently with exercise, diet, meditation and affirmations to manage her diabetes, and even feel like she had reversed the disease. “I attribute my success to taking my power back from the ‘dis-ease,’ and getting more in touch with my body from the inside out,” says Sandler. “I was willing to trust my intuition, and ask questions and for help from my wellness team. It didn’t take long before I was actually feeling spontaneous gratitude for the occurrence.” Diabetes lends itself to a holistic approach because it is a whole body and life-altering illness. Although seen as a pancreatic or insulin receptor dysfunction, the impact of diabetes reaches every cell of the body. Lifestyle decisions are changed forever — this is no small ticket diagnosis. Not all diabetes is created equal. Type 1 diabetes, which usually begins in childhood, is a failure of the pancreas to pump out insulin in adequate quantity for the body’s needs. With type 2 diabetes (also known as adult onset diabetes), the receptors that normally take up insulin in every cell of the body are malfunctioning. Because these receptors serve as on/off switches for the utilization of glucose, the body’s capacity to use glucose as fuel is hindered. As a result, the liver pumps up the body’s level of triglycerides — a move that can stress the heart.

What’s a Body to Do?

There are ways to improve insulin levels naturally. Although these whole-life suggestions will more likely influence type 2 than type 1 diabetes, these lifestyle changes offer a beneficial path to follow.

Approaching Diabetes Holistically By Dr. Mary Ann Wallace-Iyer

Rita Sandler

Exercise. Engaging in a minimum of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day does lower glucose levels, increase the apparent efficiency of the insulin receptors, help with weight loss, reduce blood pressure and make for a healthier heart. Make exercise easy and fun by choosing two or three things you like to do and alternate between them. Nutrition. A good diet serves every body well, but it’s particularly important for someone with diabetes. The rigid American Diabetes Assn. diet has been relaxed somewhat – but there are basics that do matter: Get your weight under control. Central obesity is associated with “syndrome X,” a malady of insulin resistance that has been estimated by some researchers to be a significant cause of heart attacks, among other things. Choose your calories wisely. Dump the fat and go for the fiber. Whole

grains, nontropical fruits and vegetables are always a safe bet. Diabetes Care reports that Dr. Mary Ann Wallace-Iyer m e n w h o consume processed meat at least five times a week have a 46 percent greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with men who consume processed meat less than once a month. Increase your consumption of omega-3s (found in walnuts, flax seeds, and cold-water fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel) and make it your fat-of-choice. Avoid high glycemic goods like white rice and corn flakes — they’re a waste of precious calories. Sandler faced challenges with being on this new diabetic diet. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by Dr. Audrey Bergsma, who is a naturopath at the National College of Natural Medicine Clinic in Portland. Bergsma suggested a low carbohydrate diet (20 carbs a day) and eliminated all of the nutritional supplements Sandler

was using (later, Sandler used aloe to drop her blood sugar significantly to the normal range). Sandler’s blood sugar and blood pressure went down, but not to a normal range. Being on a diet wasn’t smooth sailing. “My old nutritional pattern of being on a diet or off a diet came into play, and I pretty much stopped paying attention,” says Sandler. “I gained weight, stopped watching carbs and let go of my exercise routine.” According to Bergsma, for type 2 diabetes, the insulin receptors are “insensitive” for a good reason — they have been bombarded with glucose and they are trying to protect the cell, which has also been showered with glucose. Too much glucose is damaging to the cell and so the receptors shut down. The goal of diet and exercise is to help the body reach homeostasis and open up the insulin receptors. Increasing exercise uses glucose and significantly reducing certain high carb foods (including grains, fruits and starchy vegetables) helps the patient achieve homeostasis. By monitoring the blood sugar level, the patient then knows what foods work in the diet. It is the hope that once the body heals and reaches homeostasis, the patient can eventually have a diet that includes “good” whole grains, fruits and starchy vegetables.

A New Attitude

Sandler’s challenge with the special diet ended when her health took another turn for the worse. She went blind in her left eye, and although the diagnosis seemed to be unrelated to her diabetes, the scare prompted her to do more research in what she could do to empower herself. She became devoted to healing herself Continued on page 8

alternative health

Diabetes, from page 7 naturally. She began to keep a journal and use her blood sugar and blood pressure readings as barometers of what worked and what didn’t work. “My favorite thing and biggest motivator was turning the readings into charts, which clearly showed a cycle and a continual lowering in numbers,” says Sandler. “A big healing factor is that I was happy through the whole experience. I wasn’t feeling like it was a burden.” Sandler is really onto something here. Creative Nursing reported that an attitude that fosters optimism enhances the body’s capacity to heal. The field of psychoneuroimmunology, which investigates how emotions trigger physical responses, has outlined the clear connection between the parts of the brain associated with emo-

tions (the hippocampus and amygdala) and the resultant physical and behavioral responses. Research in Family Medicine found that an exercise aimed at increasing gratitude is associated with less depression. Writing down three positive things that happened during the day every night for one week increases gratitude. As Sandler found, the behavior changes that come from feeling more optimistic are likely to promote better health.

The Aloe Factor

Sandler’s success also came from using a nutritional product not usually offered in the realm of conventional medicine: an aloe-based supplement. Initially, Sandler stopped drinking aloe when she was on the low carb diet prescribed by her naturopath. “When my blood sugar readings were in

a comfortable zone, I chose to add aloe back to my diet,” says Sandler. “The results were amazing. Drinking aloe actually lowered my readings by 15 to 20 points almost immediately.” Research supports her results on this front as well. Research in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine concluded that aloe vera has the ability to stimulate human skin fibroblasts and potentially improve wound healing. The American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy reported that five out of seven studies showed significant reductions in fasting blood glucose after treatment with oral aloe vera in patients with diabetes. What is the secret of Sandler’s success? “I totally live my life from the belief that we create our own reality and I was well aware during the course of my dis-ease, what I had thought, felt and believed that allowed this experience into my reality,” says Sandler. “I found myself in gratitude almost

immediately, which allowed my body to go from damaged to repaired.” Through a combination of attitude, gratitude and lifestyle, Sandler’s blood sugar levels decreased from 163 to 105 (normal blood sugar ranges from 80 to 130). Over the course of seven months, her hemoglobin A1c (which measures average blood sugars) decreased from 6.9 to 5.5 (normal is less than 7). Amazingly, she also regained the sight in her eye. Follow your physician’s advice, but take control of your own health, choices and attitude. Mary Ann Wallace-Iyer, MD, is a physician whose primary focus is mind-body and spiritual healing. For nine years, Wallace served as the medical director for the integrative medicine program she developed within a large regional hospital system. Visit www.maryannwallace. com.

Breaking Free and Moving Forward By Emily Trinkaus

On March 11, Uranus the great awakener moves into fiery Aries, waking up your instincts, passions and power to take action. This energetic acceleration helps you break free from blocks that keep you from living authentically and moving forward. Emily Trinkaus

A second major shift occurs on April 4 when Neptune — planet of spirit, dreams

and the imagination — enters mystical Pisces for the first time in more than 100 years. Neptune in Pisces dissolves the boundaries between the seen and unseen, and dissolves the ego to uncover the truth that we are all one.

Personal Sun and Ascendant Messages Aries (March 21 - April 19) Uranus in your sign for the next seven years catalyzes a powerful period of growth and change — your personal revolution. Shake off old, self-limiting patterns and experiment with new ways of meeting the world. You’re ready to step into a greater role as a leader and innovator, and to inspire others through your courageous example. Trust your instincts and live your passion.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Spiritual activism is your assignment for the next several years. You’re waking up to your power to work with the invisible realm and to effect positive change through the energy you cultivate and transmit. Seek out friends who inspire you, expand your perception and help you open to more magical possibilities. A new spiritual group or community could provide valuable support.

Gemini (May 21 - June 21) Let go of friendships and group activities that drain your energy and limit your potential. You’re ready to give your gift to the world in creative new ways, and take your work in a more spiritual, healing direction. Update your community of allies to support this shift. Getting involved in causes you feel passionate about will open the door to exciting new connections.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22) Clinging to the status quo in your career is not a viable strategy. You’ve got opportunities for new growth, and if you jump in, take the initiative and seize the moment, you can make changes that lead to lasting success. Adaptability and creativity are key. Pay attention to synchronicities, take the risk of acting on your hunches, and be willing to release old beliefs about what’s possible.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) A surge of enthusiasm inspires you to take a brave leap into the unknown. Embrace unexpected opportunities to travel, pursue a spiritual quest or otherwise broaden your perspective. Stepping outside your comfort zone helps you break free from self-limiting beliefs, strengthens your intuition and opens up unforeseen possibilities. Soften emotional defenses and be willing to receive help for this process.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) There’s plenty of cosmic support for releasing old subconscious programs, emotional patterns and deep-seated fears. As you free yourself from inhibitions and allow more of your authentic self to be seen, you open the potential for greater intimacy with yourself and others. A longing for deeper spiritual connections may lead to dissolving relationships that no longer fulfill or inspire you.

Libra (September 23 - October 23) An urge for more freedom and independence stirs up the need for change in your significant relationships. You’re

New Conneüion March/April 2011

ready to break free from old patterns of being overly accommodating, and sacrificing your desires to please others. For the next seven years, you’re putting out the casting call for unconventional or unusual people who shake up your outlook and bring forth unexpressed parts of yourself.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22) If you’re feeling restless and impatient with the daily grind, take charge and make a change. Sticking with what’s familiar will not serve you. Instead, take steps to bring more independence, flexibility and excitement into your work life and routines. Approach your everyday life as a heroic adventure. Boldness and originality will be rewarded.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21) Express yourself! Your creativity is on fire, and you’re ready to give birth to visions that have been brewing beneath the surface. Experimenting with different forms of creative expression can help you break through blocks and strengthen your confidence. Turn your home into a sacred sanctuary to increase your feeling of support and security.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) The ground beneath you may be shifting, as you awaken to deep feelings and underlying restlessness that threaten the status quo. Trust that temporary instability will ultimately lead to greater security — if you’re brave enough to give voice to your true needs and desires. You have the opportunity to awaken to, and break free from, old family patterns that have held you back.

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19) The fires of enthusiasm, innovation and leadership stir you into action. You may have made some bold new beginnings last summer, only to return them to the back burner for further simmering. Now you’re ready to go for it. Speak your truth and share your message with the world. Take advantage of opportunities to express yourself through writing, teaching and public speaking.

Healing Our World Through Acceptance & Joy

10:30 am This and Every Sunday

By Joanne Craft

eing green means more than just sustainable living. It also means bringing nature indoors. Green plants provide many benefits, both physiological and psychological, to all of our five senses. Research has shown that healthy, wellmaintained plants can improve air quality, reduce background noise and affect your behavior. Being close to plants reduces stress. Your heart rate, blood pressure and skin conductivity all benefit from the presence of plants. Joanne Craft People in well landscaped offices and homes recover from stress more quickly than those in environments without plants. If you work at home or in an office building, it’s ideal to keep a plant right on your desk as well as other areas throughout the office. Bring these Pacific Northwest plants indoors, not only to heighten and satisfy your senses but also to keep your environment happier and healthier: Green Lady (Aglaonema Green Lady): The plants’ scientific name originates from the two Greek words aglaos, meaning bright and nama, a filament or thread, referring to the striking stamens produced within the flowers. It is a popular plant with the Chinese, to whom it symbolizes long life. The less romantic common name

of Painted droptongue refers to the leathery, tongue-shaped leaves of Aglaonema crispum. The Green Lady is characterized by its dark green leaves with silver green markings, rapid growth rate, and resistance to diseases common to other Aglaonema. Black Coral (Sansevieria Trifasciata Black Coral): This exotic plant with tall narrow leaves with gray and green wavy lines across a rich green background, can be used as artful accent or in mass in planters or beds. The seemingly indestructible Black Coral can be grown in any type of light, tolerates low humidity and water, and sporadic feeding. Philodendron Red Congo: This plant is a new and distinct cultivar of Philodendron. It is a product of the cross or breeding between Philodendron Imperial Red as the female parent and an unidentified cultivar of the Philodendron tatei. This plant grows vigorously in an upright but spreading or open manner. New Red Congo leaves are brownish maroon to almost red in color while the large mature ones are dark green in color with a touch of red. The plant’s leaf petioles remain reddish purple to bright red with long-lasting petiole sheaths. Wake Up, Jonas Elrod and Chloe Crespi, Beyond Words, 2010, $19.95

The “wake up” in the DVD Wake Up is Jonas Elrod opening his eyes one day in a San Francisco hotel room and realizing he can see otherworldly things — spirits, demons, angels and auras. Shortly after that, his best buddy dies, and the combination of events sends Elrod and his skeptical but loving girlfriend, Mara, on a journey across the nation and beyond, seeking help, enlightenment and scientific validation. His search includes the minister of the small-town Georgia church he grew up in, a man in Rome who takes pictures of spirits, various experts in the science of the paranormal, an acupuncturist, a Sufi healer, Buddhist nun Joan Halifax, and Ramtha channeler JZ Knight. The climax is a nine-day Skokomish vision quest in the woods near Chehalis, Wash. Yet after he’s done all these things, you can’t help but wonder: why Jonas Elrod? Why this ordinary guy in sneakers and a baseball cap? Elrod wonders, too. He makes no claims to insider spiritual knowledge based on his visions, but says the entities have told him to explain that their world exists. This documentary is part of that explanation. — Fran Gardner

Rainbow Warrior Awaken!, Mara Berendt Friedman and Trinity Harris, TrinQuinity Productions, 2010, $33

The power of the divine feminine flows with grace through this 44-card divination deck and guidebook. The deck features the visionary art of Mara Berendt Friedman and messages from the voice of the wise grandmother written by energy therapist Trinity Harris. The seed was planted for creating the deck when Friedman kept hearing the words rainbow warrior. She later learned about Native American prophecies that tell of a time when the planet is ravaged by environmental destrucT O R’ tion and in a grave state DI of imbalance. A new tribe of people of every color, culture and creed will gather, and these rainCHOICE bow children, through their compassionate actions, will heal the wounds of Mother Earth. The messages and images awaken the sacred wisdom of the crone dwelling in all beings, creating living doorways through which the sacred feminine brings forth love and truth. — Vicky Thompson

The Two Sisters’ Café, Elena Yates Eulo and Samantha Harper Macy, Portal Books, 2010, $24.95

Sisters Alma and Vannie May own a small magical café in Willow Creek, a sleepy little town set in the 1950s in rural Kentucky. The café hosts town meetings, gossip sessions, delicious home cooked meals and a special kind of magic. Many of the local residents have their lives drastically changed after coming to the café. The heart of Willow Creek lies in the hands of these two amazing and capable sisters who endeavor to help better the lives of their fellow townsfolk in their own unique way. The sisters take on a young apprentice, who works with them in the café, learning and practicing the teachings. This magical story kept me intrigued and hungry for more. I found myself wanting to drop by the café and have a cup of tea with these two fictional women. This is a lovely, uplifting and positive story with just enough twists and laugh-out-loud moments to make it an exceptional read.

Tapping the Source, William Gladstone, Richard Greninger and Gayle Newhouse, Beyond Words, 2010, $19.95

How do you find your own inner joy and peace? How do you find happiness? This DVD discusses the how and why we want to go within to find that place of discovery. More than 100 people were interviewed and asked: What is source? They opened their hearts, shared their thoughts and experiences, illustrating perhaps a shift in consciousness to a place of deeper meaning. This is a definite feel good movie, inspiring and joyful with such a positive message to share with the world. Maybe it will create a shift on a personal level, or perhaps we will notice it in politics, science, religion, business or even through art. It all fits together like a puzzle when you allow the pieces to come together.

Trust in the Freedom to Be and Now Know Yourself Jin Shin Jyutsu brings balance to the body’s energies, promoting our own profound healing capacity. It is a valuable complement to conventional healing methods, inducing relaxation and reducing stress. It’s not a physical manipulation of tissue and uses only minimal pressure.

The hands are used as “jumper cables,” contacting 26 “safety energy locks” to redirect or unblock the ow of energy along its pathways. In a session, after “listening” to the energy pulses in the wrists, a practitioner employs a harmonizing sequence or “ow” to unblock pathways and restore the energy.

The Legend of the Crystal Skulls By Joshua Shapiro

photos: Joshua Shapiro & Katrina Head

ncient prophecies foretell how crystalline objects will assist planet Earth in becoming a world of peace. Could these indigenous legends be about crystal skulls? As a crystal skull explorer for the last 28 years, I have investigated the mystery around these crystalline carvings, which

are human-shaped skulls made out of different types of quartz crystals and other gemstones. Many of the early crystal skulls were initially found in the 1800s in Mexico within or near ancient tombs. Today however, skulls have been uncovered worldwide, including China, Mongolia, Peru, Australia and throughout Europe. My crystal skull fascination began in 1983 with a chance encounter with an amethyst crystal skull while traveling through San Jose, Calif. A friend shared a photo of an ancient amethyst skull she had personally seen, and my life was forever changed. It awakened an inner knowing that these crystal skulls carved by ancient cultures are one of the most powerful tools emerging to assist in the spiritual transformation of our world. A few days later, I saw this crystal skull with my own eyes and I became a real-life explorer. The Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, one of the most famous carvings, was discovered

Bottom: Shapiro, shown with his personal crystal skulls at Machu Picchu, has searched for a blue skull in Peru.

Newly crafted modern crystal skulls also hold great healing power. My 10-pound Brazilian smoky quartz skull is known as “Portal de Luz” or Portal of Light. In 2003, Portal was tested by researchers in Belgium using a Lecher antenna, which is normally used to measure the energy that emanates from the body’s organs, skeletal structure as well as the energy fields surrounding the physical body. The researchers tested Portal to see what energies were being broadcast from this crystalline structure. They discovered that the skull was emanating the frequencies of the five human senses. They were astounded by the results, so they conducted the test two more times and got the same outcome. Is there a living consciousness that works through the crystal skulls? Researchers moved Portal outside to a location where the skull seemed “happy” on the ground. Using readings on the Lecher antenna, the researchers discovered a new energy ley line that did not appear in pretest measurements. What do these amazing experiences tell us about the crystal skulls? They may be linked to a living intelligence that can communicate with us telepathically or through a spiritually based connection. This crystalline energy can also heal people or affect other powerful inner transformations. And as prophecies predict, crystal skulls may be an ancient sacred tool returning to help humanity create a world of peace. Joshua Shapiro is Washington state-based crystal skull explorer. Shapiro will present two events in Portland, including a workshop at Crystal Temple on April 22-24 and a lecture at the New Connexion Wellness Night at New Renaissance on April 26. Visit

in 1924 in the Central American country of Belize in the city of Lubaantun, which is a buried Mayan city known as the City of Fallen Stones. This human-sized quartz skull is an almost exact replica of the human bone skull, including fantastic detail in the carving of the eyes, the nose and the teeth. The Mitchell-Hedges skull is comprised of two pieces — the upper part of the skull and a separate lower jaw. Modern archeologists have debated whether the skull was fashioned by advanced crystal carvers in the 1800s (like the master carvers in Idar-Oberstein in Germany) or if it was made by Mesoamerican carvers. Many theories abound about the perfectly crafted skull, and some spiritualists and paranormal researchers believe the Mitchell-Hedges skull is much older than reported and could have originated from the time of Atlantis. Miraculous healings have occurred in the presence of this well-known crystal skull, including the healing of physical ailments or illnesses, and an expansion in spiritual and creative gifts. I’ll never forget the experience I had with the MitchellHedges skull in 2008. I brought three of my own crystal skulls to sit with the MitchellHedges skull. I placed a 10-pound (almost human-sized) Brazilian smoky quartz skull face-to-face with the Mitchell-Hedges skull. Behind the legendary skull, I then placed a two-pound dark smoky quartz skull and a one-pound rose quartz skull, forming a perfect triangle. I sat in a meditative position facing the skulls. I sensed in my mind’s eye a very powerful being or consciousness floating to the right of the Mitchell-Hedges skull. I was then blessed with the sharing of wisdom by this universal consciousness, and I continue to feel its heart-opening and protective power today.

Human Design, from page 1

Lose Your Mind, from page 1

It is the first system of its kind to reveal unconscious elements of our personalities — that hidden side of your personality that influences so much of your behaviors. It is about character and identity. It informs you how you best operate, think, function and respond.

observe those things, it means we actually have a choice in modifying our behavior. The more consciousness you have, the more awareness you have about yourself, your environment and yourself in the environment. More consciousness also means you are better able to adapt to conditions in your life and make changes to meet those environmental conditions. If someone is unconscious, they keep repeating or reconfronting the same issues over and over again without even thinking about modifying something about themselves to produce a different outcome. Consciousness allows us to take the shortcut to evolve our actions, our thoughts and our emotions so we can actually, in a very nonlinear way, take the shortcut to a greater level of evolution. How do emotions work in setting intentions? In the process of creation there is a balance between intention and surrender, and if you over-intend, that’s called “trying” (trying to control the outcome) and that doesn’t work in the quantum field. Then there is surrender, which is trusting an outcome that already exists beyond your senses and letting your body emotionally move into what that would feel like. Then you give thanks before the event has taken place. We know from the experiments that intention by itself does absolutely nothing. But when you couple it with an emotion, when you surrender to the emotion ahead of the actual event and don’t try to analyze it or figure out how it’s going to happen — and you just let go and believe — it works a whole lot better. It’s a balance.

Personal Blueprint

It is a blueprint because your design is as unique as your fingerprint, created at your exact moment of birth. It determines the kind of person you were born to be and how you are designed to interact — socially and intimately — with others. It captures your true nature long before it was influenced or shaped by outside conditioning, so you really do get to see the most authentic version of you. From birth, and through the years of childhood, adulthood and love, the people around us tend to impact our behaviors and so we cut our cloth accordingly to be fit in, be liked or accepted, to live up to expectations or avoid judgment. Consequently, we become someone not true to ourselves and can live out of alignment with our intended design. Human Design is multilayered because it shows what type of person you are, what your particular way of being is, and what decision-making strategy works best for you. It is multipurpose because this self-knowledge can then be applied to your work, love relationships, family interactions and friendships. Once you rediscover your true nature, and decide to honor it, the more authentic and fulfilled you feel. Self-knowledge becomes self-power.
