atanjali’s eight-fold path describes stages of development that lead naturally to spiritual unfoldment, and to more perfected expressions of each stage. The first stage is called “yama,” which means control. The yamas are the “don’ts” on the spiritual path and the attitudes we automatically achieve as we refine our natures spiritually. The first of the yamas is “ahimsa” or non-injury. Ahimsa is a term that was popularized in our times by Mahatma Gandhi. By nonviolent resistance he led India to political emancipation from Britain. But alas, he was not able to teach the Indian people the deeper implications of this teaching. Ahimsa is seen by most people even today as the last hope of the underdog. Yet ahimsa, rightly understood, is the “ultimate weapon” of a strong man — it turns one’s enemy into a friend, thereby banishing the possibility of further conflict. With the perfection of ahimsa, even hardened criminals and ferocious criminals become tame and harmless in our presence. Many were the instances in the life of my own guru, Paramhansa Yogananda, when this principle was demonstrated. Non-injury doesn’t only mean non-killing. You can injure others in many ways: by discouraging a person who is full of enthusiasm for a good thing, by treating people contemptuously, without respect, or even by being cold to them. How do we practice non-injury, and why is it such an important principle for our spiritual growth? We need to understand that everything in its deepest reality is our own self — that the life flowing in our veins is the same life that flows in the veins of all creatures. All of us are expressions of God, in the same way (to use a favorite illustration of my guru’s) that the individual jets on a gas burner, though appearing separate from one another, are only manifestations of the unifying gas underneath. If we’re trying to develop the realization that our deepest reality is expressed in everything, then we must live in such a way as constantly to affirm our oneness — by kindness toward all beings, by compassion, by universal love. We cannot pretend that certain things are less a part of that oneness than others. We must wish well toward everything. To injure anything is to go against that principle. The principles of the yamas are stated in negative terms. Patanjali speaks of noninjury to others rather than of blessing them. The wish to bless people springs up automatically once you reach that level of realization where you see that all is one, that you are not separate from the world around you. When you see that everything is part of your inner essence, the thought then naturally arises of what you can do to be of help to others, without any desire to change or dominate them.

Turning Enemies into Friends

By Swami Kriyananda

Practicing Ahimsa

It’s very difficult to practice ahimsa literally. There are situations, the Bhagavad Gita declares, in which a lesser harm must be inflicted to forestall a greater harm. Thus more highly evolved species should be protected from less evolved species, even if the protection involves killing. At times it is necessary to fight — for example, in a defensive war, to protect the innocent from destruction by an aggressor. Living in this world of relativity forces us, even if inadvertently, to perform some injurious acts. With every inhalation, hosts of germs are killed. Every outing in the car inadvertently causes the death of

numerous insects. We walk outdoors and can hardly avoid stepping on a few ants. The Jains in India put a huge emphasis on trying not to kill anything. They hold this view to such a degree that they wear masks over their mouths and boil their water so that they won’t kill the germs when they drink it. Of course, they’re killing the germs when they boil the water, so what’s the difference? It’s just not possible to live without causing some injury. If you don’t eat meat, then you’re killing vegetables, for they obviously have life, too.

Importance of Intent

The important thing is the intent. What makes an act wrong is the wish to injure. Native Americans who depended upon hunting for their survival would mentally contact a herd of deer and say, “We need to eat. Would you offer one of your tribe?” Then one deer would separate itself from the herd as the offering, and they would kill that particular animal. In the fascinating book, The Secret Life of Plants, the authors discuss research that scientists have done to see whether or not plants have emotional responses. They attached polygraphs (lie detectors) to plants and found that they do in fact have emotional responses. If a person has a wish to bless them, the plants are very happy. If somebody wishes to harm them, they become trembling or weak. They experimented by having one person in the laboratory behave as the “heavy.” Every time he came into the room, the graph started showing agitation. When the person who had been caring for the plants telephoned, even from a great distance, the plants somehow picked up that vibration and started showing very

Expressions of God

harmonious wave patterns. But the most interesting thing they found was that the plants responded not only to pain being inflicted on them, but also to the intention to inflict pain. If, for example, you burned a plant with a cigarette without conscious intent to harm, the plant wasn’t bothered very much. But if you had an intention to cause pain by touching a cigarette to a plant, the plant showed great agitation even before you touched it. Ahimsa essentially applies to intention because in this relativistic world it’s not possible to live without doing some harm. But if you can overcome the wish to injure, if you can recognize that God is in everything, then you are embracing the true principle of ahimsa.

Relationships of the Soul By John Holland

elationships are mirror images of your own life, how you feel and treat yourself, as well as how you react and respond to different situations and people that are around you. All relationships, whether they’re on an emotional, physical, mental or spiritual level, are part of the learning process and enlightenment of the soul. No matter what category a relationJohn Holland ship falls into, it becomes a teaching tool for you to appreciate the lessons that your soul needs to learn. It can also help you to understand, change or enhance your individual qualities. Every relationship is an opportunity for soul growth. Different types of relationships have an uncanny way of showing you what you need to work on in your life. At times, they reveal your vulnerabilities and insecurities, or even your need for attention, approval and acceptance. Equally, they can identify where you may be stuck in a rut, or where you need love, peace, healing or joy in your life. Working as a psychic medium, I have come to appreciate and to look at people on a soul level. This helps me to express love through my heart, and to experience the interaction as a soul. When I find myself interacting with a difficult person, I try to connect with them on a soul level, or in other words, I try to make a soul-to-soul connection.

Look Deeper

Non-injury is necessary to achieve deeper states of consciousness in meditation. As

Trust me, I know that it’s not that easy, but I try to look at that person from a divine perspective. I try to understand them through my own soul, my heart center, and by tapping into and using my intuition. I see them as a divine soul, instead of what my eyes see or the reaction from my conscious response. It enables me to see the real person and the good that I know is inside all of us. Sometimes that divinity, that goodness that you know is there, may be buried. Often it’s suffocated by years of torment, negative behavior, mental conditioning or unhealthy relationships. Sometimes the hardest and most painful relationships can act as our best teachers and guides. Relationships of all kinds are really about

Doorway into the Afterlife: An Interview with Suzane Northrop

By Vicky Thompson

uzane Northrop sees dead people. And what is their message from beyond the grave? Love each other. Stop fighting. Support each other. It’s that simple. Northrop has been an internationally acclaimed medium and expert in psychic phenomena for more than 30 years. Through her Emmynominated TV series, Suzane Northrop The Afterlife (which continues to rerun in the U.S. and Canada), and the Suzane Northrop Radio Show on Blog Talk Radio, she has helped thousands of people worldwide to heal from the loss of loved ones. What do you need to know about death? Love never dies, and Northrop knows that firsthand.

You had an interesting experience with your grandmother when she passed. Was that one of the first known memories you had when you knew you could speak with the departed? That’s my first known memory with people who have gone through the physical death process. I have had contact with the spirit world since I was 5, but yes, when my paternal grandmother passed, I was 13. She was this dynamo, bigger-thanlife type of woman. So when she got ill — she had colon cancer — she went from what I would guess was about 180 pounds down to like 80 pounds. That was pretty intense, and that was the last physical time when I actually saw her in the hospital. Days after her death, I had the Hollywood experience. She came and stood at the bottom of my bed, saying, “I want you to keep up with your piano lessons. I am going to give you one of my houses. I can’t visit you very often, but I want you to know I am always going to be there.” And at that point she was big and fat again, and to me, Grandma looked all well. That has always remained so strong for me because if everyone had that experience where they saw somebody who was very ill die, and then they saw them well afterward

[as a spirit], they would view what we call physical death very differently. The next day my mother said, “We need to go to the parlor.” When we went to the parlor there was this box with this woman dressed in my grandmother’s clothes who looked absolutely nothing like my grandmother. I was actually appalled because when I had seen her the night before, she was vibrant and lively. I didn’t understand and make the connection because to me she was more alive than I had seen her the night before than this person who looked like her in this box. So I must have been speaking to her out loud, and my mother came running up to me and said, “You better go sit in the car, or you are going to get your father upset.” I went and sat in the car — it was my grandmother’s car — and of course my grandmother came and sat with me. I am often asked if I was ever afraid [of connecting with the departed], and always I say I have never been afraid of dead people. Don’t ask me about living people, but I have never been afraid of dead people. Many people are afraid of death. What happens when we die? Our consciousness, our soul or our spirit (it doesn’t really matter what you call it because it’s really all the same),

Q. A.

is the essence of who we are — our spark. If you have ever seen anybody in a coffin, you can’t tell me that they are there. What’s left is the body of where they were. But their spirit, their essence, you can see that is gone — that is the spark that keeps us all alive. So that continues after what we call physical death and that continuance of that consciousness (I call it God consciousness) exists with the body and without a body, so that continues to go on. You’ve worked with so many people suffering from grief. What are some of the things that you’ve learned in connecting with the departed that can help people move through the grieving process? The number one thing — there is no magic wand. Everybody’s grief and process is individual, so it’s not like we can push a button and move past it. You’ve got to go through whatever your process is with that loss. Physical death is the biggie for most of us, but we have death throughout all our lives — divorce, loss of this and loss of that, but the physical seems to be the final one. With that finality, if people know without question that the person who has physically left their body will contact them to let them know that they are OK, it really helps the process a lot. If you can open your mind and your heart to know that they are around you, and that in their own way they will connect with you, I think it helps. You’ve been an expert consultant with the police on investigations. What is the afterlife mindset like for someone who’s experienced a violent death? I could say to you, “Do you remember 10 years ago when your friend had that really bad car accident and died?” And you would say, “Yes.” Then I would say, “Do they remember that car accident?” And they remember that car accident, but they don’t remember the pain of that ac-

A n a n d a

cident because it is only a memory. It is very important to know that the people who have passed over are not carrying the physical pain that happened at the time of their passing. There is no memory — it doesn’t exist within the soul process because that is a physical thing of the body. I really urge people to understand that they are not in that place mentally, emotionally or physically. You’re a medium and you’re a healer of the grieving. How has that made a difference in your own life? I have had the honor and privilege to connect people. I have the grief that goes through me, but the joy of the connection also goes through me. It always hits me how these people love us and continue to love us — it is so important, and yet we live our lives focusing on things that are so damn unimportant. The last thing that they want you to do is fight in the family, or to not connect or not be in love, or to not be supportive of each other through this process. A tragedy is when you lose your only son, or you lose your best friend, or when you lose you twin sister — it creates a different perspective of what is most important in our lives.

Someone to Watch Over Me

any traditions teach that we are all one, created by one source of lifegiving energy. To me, the one source of universal life is the juice of creation that holds all wisdom, truth, and clarity to guide you and others through life. Your neighbors, friends, family, animals, plants, minerals, atoms — the very creational energy of the universe — represent the one source of universal life (OSOUL) in by Vicky Thompson many different and beautiful forms. When you can see the OSOUL dwelling in others, you find that you have nothing to fear. I learned the power of the OSOUL a few years ago through what seemed like a simple choice to allow my son to sit alone at a restaurant counter while I ordered our dinner. My then five-year-old son, Tristan, sat down at a counter seat by the window, which was lined with flowers and a candle. I gave him a pad of paper and a pen to keep him busy while I stood in line about eight feet away. I glanced over at him a few times while I was waiting and looking at the menu. Suddenly there was a commotion where Tristan was sitting. A father from another table was stomping out a napkin that was on fire. I walked over quickly and saw that he was also stamping out the now burning pad of paper I had given Tristan. “He held it over the candle,” the father said in response to my alarmed look. Tristan stood by the man’s wife, holding his fingers in fear. Checking his tiny hands for burns, I asked Tristan if he was okay. “I didn’t know that would happen,” he said in a small voice. “Now you know,” I said, rubbing his back. I felt that the experience itself was a good teacher, so I said no more. I profusely thanked the couple for acting so quickly. Tristan then came in line with me and we ordered dinner. Later the couple’s son, who looked about eight years old, walked over and patted Tristan on the back, saying, “Are you okay, buddy? Now you know not to play with fire.” I thanked the boy and told him that it was a good lesson. Later when I was driving home, I started to feel bad, knowing that I had not made a good choice in letting Tristan sit alone while I ordered. But while listening to my inner guidance,

To me, the one source of universal life is the juice of creation that holds all wisdom, truth, and clarity to guide you and others through life. I felt that was not the lesson of the evening for me. My lesson was that even though I wasn’t watching, OSOUL is always watching. When I thanked the couple for acting so quickly, I was thanking them for listening to their hearts and taking fast action. When I thanked their son for sharing an important lesson with Tristan, I was thanking spirit for speaking through a powerful messenger in the form of a child. A child’s message to another child was more powerful than anything I could have said in that moment. It was OSOUL speaking to a child, patting his back and letting him know that it was okay to learn the lessons of life. The one source of universal life is present and tangible when you become spirit’s hands, eyes and voice, reaching out to help others through life. Vicky Thompson is the editor of New Connexion. In Case of Spiritual Awakening

any people are going through a spiritual awakening right now. It’s like consciousness, going viral. Yet while awakening sounds so exciting, when you’re suddenly in communication with guides, angels, the departed — it’s not easy to integrate that experience into your perceived reality. If this is happening to you, understand that the road to awakening extends perfectly, and contains all the time you need to shift, change and transform your consciousness. In my own situation, it took a full eight years from the time of my near death experience to my full spiritual awakening when I received and wrote The 33 Lessons. I was reluctant, very determined to hang onto the idea that I could control things. It took a lot of heartache until I could finally let go of those ideas. Even now, years later, I am still opening, deepening, growing. There are two pathways to spiritual awakening: one is spiritual, and the other is psychic. The funny thing is, both paths journey exactly the same road — just traveled from opposite directions. Let’s say you’re a guru, a holy saint or mystic deep in spiritual practice. You pray, you do rituals, you sit in mediation and connect deeply to the now. In everything you do, your focus is your spiritual development. And yet, over time, as you sit on your prayer rug and expand your consciousness, something happens. You become psychic, simply because your consciousness has shifted — and this is what happens when our consciousness shifts. Now, let’s say you’re walking the other road — you’re a person deeply intrigued by the possibility of becoming psychic. You train with the highest level teachers, you take workshops, you practice your skills. And as you follow this practice over time, you experience a consciousness shift that transforms you into spiritual being. No matter if you are taking the first step upon the road to spiritual awakening or are well on the path, trust that it is the ultimate life journey, the reason we’re here. —Sara Wiseman, author of Becoming Your Best Self,

Do You Qigong?

It Isn’t Easy Being Green

igong (pronounced chee-gong, sometimes written chi kung) is an ancient mind-body-spirit exercise practice from China involving slow, gentle, usually repetitive movements, executed with a focused mind and breathing. It is an easy-to-learn physical health practice, a stress-dissolving meditative practice and an energy-boosting practice all rolled into one. “Fads don’t last for 5,000 years. If something’s around that long, it’s because it works,” says Mark R. Reinhart, president of the National Qigong Assn. (NQA). Although Qigong (and its martial arts offspring Tai Chi) is an exercise, it’s one in which you don’t have to break a sweat. In fact it’s done by busy executives in their offices, teachers in their classrooms, performers backstage and travelers in airports. Grandparents are reporting that practicing Qigong makes them more supple and flexible — and able to keep up with their grandchildren. Doctors recommend it for patients recovering from physical injury. Performers and athletes find that it helps them focus and keeps them loose. A bicyclist reports that climbing hills has become a snap since practicing Qigong. Because it is physical, easy to do and doesn’t take long, it is an activity the whole family can do together. Qigong massage and qigong-based practices have been found effective for autistic children and children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. According to the Mayo Clinic, Qigong and its sister practice Tai Chi are “all inclusive exercise.” The NQA Annual Conference is open to the public on July 27-29 at the Hilton Vancouver in Washington. Sacred Seven: Symbol of the World Soul By John Michell

even is the number of the world soul. It is the divine spirit that appears at the very beginning of the Bible story in Genesis 1, where “the world was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters.” That was the state of things before the Creator began his geometry. Seven was there already, and the Creator honored it by perfecting his work in seven days, the last of

early Christianity. Yet Seven itself is not partial towards either gender, being an emblem of wisdom and exerting its influence wherever virtue and philosophy are cultivated. The tradition of seven oracular priestesses, virgins, sisters or wise women is paralleled by the seven sages of Greece, the seven roshis of Buddhism, and the “seven wise masters” whose legend is that they taught the seven liberal arts to the son of a Roman emperor. simplest, most natural stage of the human cycle, the stage of tribal migration or nomadism that precedes civilization and the 12-part rationalization of the zodiac, the guiding social principles are those symbolized by Seven. The pattern of life reflects the wanderings of the seven stars or planets, time is measured by the seven lights of the Great Bear and seasons by the seven-fold cycle of the moon, while music is pitched to the seven-note scale of the rustic pipe. Everything that can be called sacred and eternal is appropriately numbered in sevens. In the system of correspondences, developed in the mystery schools of pagan and early Christian times, the seven wanderers of the heavens — Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn — were each found partners among other septenary groups — the seven metals, colors of the rainbow, musical notes, sounds, tastes, moods or humors, and so on, including the seven vowels of the classical Greek and Hebrew alphabets.

which he made holy. Seven is not often manifest in nature — though certain special plants have seven-fold leaves — but in sacred or symbolic geography the ideal landscape includes seven hills, springs, streams and other features. In cosmology Seven is taken to be the number of the universal axis, the conceptual pole on which everything revolves while the axis itself remains fixed and unchanging. That makes it a symbol of divine law, which never varies. As a number of eternity, never generated and not subject to dissolution, Seven is the natural symbol of the eternal feminine principle, typified by Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who was never born but sprang, fully armed, from the head of her father, Zeus. Athena is a constant virgin, and Seven is called the virgin number, the arithmetical reason being that it is the only number in the Decad that was not born (meaning it is not the product of any two other numbers) and does not breed (for example, 2 and 4 breed 8 and 2 x 5 produces 10). The heptagon, the figure that illustrates Seven, has the characteristics of a virgin, who cannot be made or laid down. It has been proved impossible to construct a perfect heptagon with ruler and compass. There are several techniques in geometry by which it can be done, but Seven is ever the virgin, ever wrapped in mystery and never submitting to the mastery of reason. The feminine nature of Seven is apparent in its relationship with the cycles of the moon and women. Four weeks of seven days are the four phases of the moon in its 28-day month, the seventh day is the holy Sabbath. Another feminine aspect of Seven is its connection with dreams, prophecies and the divination. In ancient Greece, before the rise of the Apollonian priesthood, oracles communicated with the spirits of earth and the underworld, and were largely operated by women. Wisdom herself is a virgin goddess — Isis, Sophia or Saint Catherine in

The two great opposites in nature — partners through necessity and carefully woven together by the Great Creator — are body and soul, symbolized respectively by Twelve and Seven. The geometry of Twelve is beautifully proportioned, Apollo-like, a work of symmetry and reason, whereas Seven is indefinable and wrapped in mystery. Twelve and Seven, being abstract number symbols, are not related to gender, but in the lower world they are attached to qualities regarded as male or female. The rational, orderly Twelve plays the conventional part of the man to the female Seven, which stands for imagination and the soul of nature. In early classical societies these two opposites were ingeniously combined. A council of 12 elders decided the affairs of state, but every decision they took was

referred to the state oracle, typically conducted by seven sibyls. If the oracle women foresaw trouble through any of the elders’ decisions, they could veto it. In this way the interests of Twelve and Seven were happily balanced, following the old principle — man proposes, woman decides. In cosmologically ordered societies, in the traditional world plan they imitate, and in geometry itself, Seven and Twelve are bound together in a truly wonderful manner, completing through their union the image of creation that is the object of the Creator’s quest. The illustration (left) shows Twelve and Seven united, and the Heavenly City revealed.

Right-Brain Ascension By Jan Engels-Smith

e are a left-brain dominated society, and this creates conflicts on all levels. The reliance on the analytical left brain is limited by facts too meager to explain even the simplest questions of why we exist or what we can become. Ascension is the act of moving upward, the transcendence of ordinary conditions of existence, the scaling to Jan Engels-Smith new heights of awareness and consciousness. The ascension process seeks to balance this logical and rational left brain of our intellect with the rich and underutilized right brain, which uses a sensuous aesthetic. The right brain comprehends holistically and draws meaning from sources far more magical and mysterious than we can manage with our left brain alone. One of the ways we access this creative and imaginative side of our right brain is through dreams. In dreams, we release control of our thinking and some interior autopilot takes over. We move freely through arenas of thought that we could not access during waking hours. However, this dream state can be achieved in a moment of waking reverie if we are able to release the artificial bonds of our rational mind — not to become irrational but to access a nonrational state where we become cognizant of a truer reality.

its need for tangible proof. But what if the proof of what exists on the other side of the wall is accessible to us, but not with our normal sight? If we think of the wall as the barrier imposed by our rational mind, then we might imagine the right brain as the window into the hidden world. As we ascend through different dimensions, more windows open and more of this world is revealed. Employing the right brain creates this connection, allowing us to erase the blind spots in our view of possibilities. Many people who work in the metaphysical sectors are major right brain users. Dreaming is a state of awareness that is mainly right brain. In a dream, we know that things are magical and spontaneous, and don’t seem to follow the logic of cause and effect or the natural laws of threedimension reality, such as gravity, speed and force. Dreams can represent the instant manifestation qualities of right brain function. To dream is to manifest and create in a different dimension. Think it and it has the potential to appear. Dreams blend event to event, are often out of time-line order and don’t necessarily make sense when we try to explain them. We expect dreams to be nonsensical and mystical, but we should pay close attention to the possible meanings that they impart and to the visions that they create. They enter through our right brain and we need to ponder them beyond the simple analytical efforts of the left brain if we hope to discover their deeper meanings and messages.

Believing Without Seeing

If we stand on one side of a wall, we might say that nothing exists on the other side because we cannot see it. In one sense, this is the way the left brain functions in

Other Dimensions

Dreams help us to understand that there

are actual dimensions of reality where physical laws are not defined as we normally perceive them, or where such rules are suspended or nonexistent. Metaphysically, dream messages come from a different place — the fourth and fifth dimensions. Life, as we know it in everyday existence, takes place in the third dimension, which is a product of left-brain thinking. The third dimension is often referred to as the mental thought reality. In this reality we have the ability to remember the past and project into the future. The present moment is hard to obtain. We remain locked in a cause/effect, time/ space paradigm because the past is imprisoned in our subconscious mind. This is an ego-based existence. The ego is only found on the left side of the brain. Again since we are a left-brain dominant culture, we are also an ego-driven culture. Shamanic values and new age ideas have offered a different way of being. We have all heard of the concepts of unity and oneness, living in love, and focusing on our commonalities rather than our differences. These ideas are actually fourth and fifth dimension realities.

Right-Brain Cultures

I have had the experience of visiting places that are right-brain dominant cultures. Their lifestyles are inclusive and alive with spiritual interactions throughout each day. The Bushmen of Africa are known as the best trackers on the planet. They can track animals on bare rock in the absence of any visible trail. In left-brain dominant societies, trackers would look for physical signs, such as broken twigs, impressions in the earth or other third dimension reality

imprints. The Bushmen “see” the energy residue from the animal. They are seeing with the clairvoyant eyes of the right brain, which sees the nonphysical forms left by the animal. This energy residue is also full of information. As we strive for ascension and seek to change our vibrations into higher qualities of purity, we must attend vigorously to creating the conditions of receptiveness by staying focused in our right brain. If we do so, we are constantly reinforced and supported with spiritual interaction and magic, and we’re able to better comprehend our amazing existence. Through ascension, we learn that the fourth dimension fosters the futuristic realization that no one is greater or more important than anyone else. This is the beginning of our understanding of oneness. In the fifth dimension, there is no illusionary limitation and anything is possible. The right brain achieves full dominance in the fifth dimension, and we are free and full of love. Stimulating and consciously activating the right brain is necessary to the ascension process. We must trigger the right brain to counterbalance the lifetime of conditioning of the left brain. Journeywork, interacting with spirit beings, meditation, reacting to art and music, and daydreaming are vital ascension activities that add to the continual reconditioning of the mind. Healthy Spine Tips for Travelers By Jay Lipoff

raveling can be bad for your back and neck health — but it doesn’t have to be. Frequent travelers and vacationers can prevent backaches, stiff necks and overall soreness by steering clear of some classic mistakes. Back pain is not trivial. It is the most common type of pain Americans experience, according to the National Institute of Health Statistics. More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 64 experience frequent back pain. Unfortunately, some of the best opportunities to hurt your back and neck actually happen on vacation — while you’re in the car, on the plane or sleeping on a lumpy hotel bed. Try these travel tips to keep your spine healthy. Sit right. Adjusting your car seat helps you avoid stiffness, strains and soreness after a long drive. Put your seat back in the upright position (not at 90 degrees but a little more like 105 degrees), not leaning back so you look out the backseat window. Move the whole seat forward and tilt it so your feet are flat on the floor and the knees are elevated slightly higher than your hips. Look in the m i r r o r. A great way to make sure you are sitting upright

and not slouching is to adjust the rearview mirror in the morning. When we wake up, we are at our tallest because our spine is fully hydrated. We also aren’t pooped from work and hunched forward. Then don’t touch the mirror again. Adjust your posture to meet the mirror — not the other way around. Protect your neck. The American Chiropractic Assn. estimates that more than 75 percent of drivers have their headrest at an inappropriate height. Reduce your chances of whiplash by raising the headrest so the middle of it meets the back of your head. Grab the wheel. Most of us are taught to drive with our hands at the 10 and 2 o’clock position. That’s correct, as long as you drop your elbows so your arms and shoulders can relax. Alternatively, lower your steering wheel, grab the wheel at the 8 and 4 o’clock position, and use the armrest, if you have one, or rest your arms on your legs. Stretch your neck. At stoplights or rest stops, do neck exercises. Do side-to-side head turns, and gently tip your ear to the shoulder of the same side, then repeat on the other side. This will help reduce the s t re s s t h a t ’ s been building up during your

rush-hour traffic commute. Start out slowly. When our backs are idle for 20 minutes or so, fluids creep back into the disc. As fluids enlarge the disc, it becomes more vulnerable. So when you arrive at your destination after a long drive, don’t jump out of the car and go to pick up the grandkids. Take a few minutes to do some gentle stretches, maybe at the gas station before you arrive, and reduce the fluid buildup in your disc area. Your entire body will benefit from doing some easy stretches to loosen and warm up your muscles. Lighten your load. Before you even get onto a crowded and cramped airplane seat, you face a bigger hazard: luggage. Pack as lightly as you can manage. Take advantage of curbside check-in if available so you don’t have to haul the bags yourself. A few bucks as a tip to keep your back healthy? Priceless. Balance your load. When you carry bags, try to balance the load — a roller in one hand, your hand luggage in the other. On long walks through airports, trade sides regularly. If you have a suitcase with wheels, load everything on it and push, don’t pull it. Pushing keeps the weight in front of you centrally, giving you better control. Fly in comfort. Onboard the plane, here are some ways to achieve the healthiest position. Place a neck pillow or rolled-up blanket behind your neck to support it so the headrest isn’t pushing your head forward. Do the same behind your lower back to support the lumbar spine. If you can, use your carry-on like a footstool to raise your knees above the level of your hips. For reading, pull out the tray and place a pillow or your rolled-up jacket

on it, then put your reading material on top so you don’t have to bend your neck down to read. Circulate this. Never aim the airplane fan to blow directly on your neck — it can cool down your neck muscles and cause spasms and neck pain later. Circulate the air around you — don’t point it on you. Same with the fan in the hotel. Have some pillow talk. If you have a favorite pillow and can afford the luggage space, bring it along, because hotel pillows are, well, notoriously awful. If the hotel only has big pillows and you’re a back sleeper, beat the thing silly or try to move some of the fiber around to make a dip for your head. Your goal with pillows is to keep your neck in a neutral position that’s similar to when you are standing or looking straight ahead. Be sure to look in the closet or call the front desk — they may have more pillows to choose from. Repurpose the towels. You can improvise your own perfect pillow using a towel from the bathroom and folding it to look like a wedge-shaped cervical pillow — the thicker part of the wedge goes under your neck, the thinner part under your head. Or simply roll up a towel, put it behind your neck, and sleep on a pillow thick enough to keep your ears in line with your shoulders on the big pillow. The idea here is to support your neck so it’s in alignment with your spine, not bent forward. Dr. Jay M. The Hunter/Farmer Diet Solution By Mark Liponis

ome people do better on a low-carb diet, and others do better on a low-fat diet. This is because some people have the metabolism of a Hunter, while others have the metabolism of a Farmer. First, the idea of being a Hunter or a Farmer shouldn’t be taken literally — I’m not talking about whether you actually hunt things or grow things in a garden. The terms apply to a new paradigm — a new way of thinking about eating and controlling weight. The terms are useful because they also explain in part the eating strategy that’s best for you. Hunters and Farmers are very different, and in some ways, opposite in their eating behaviors and food choices. Hunters are dependent on hunting animals or finding edible plants, fruits and nuts. Farmers grow crops that can be stored to create a surplus that provides a dependable and readily available source of calories. The Hunter ’s diet is more sporadic and depends on where and when food

resources become available. Hunters are naturally more resistant to the effects of food shortages, as they’re better able to maintain a steady blood-sugar level, or to use belly fat for immediate energy. Farmers are more sensitive to food shortages, as they become hypoglycemic — that is, they get low blood sugar — when they’ve gone just a few hours without food. The most significant difference between Hunters and Farmers is that they have varying sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Hunters are insulin resistant, and Farmers are insulin sensitive. Hunters need a low-carb diet based on protein and veggies and are better suited to eating less often, maybe once or twice a day. Farmers need a low-fat, grain-based diet and eat frequent small meals and snacks.

Hunter Diseases

We know that Hunters are more likely to suffer heart disease than Farmers — as well as other diseases of the circulatory system like stroke and peripheral arterial disease. Cardiovascular diseases all share a common thread of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the vessels. Atherosclerosis develops as a lifelong progressive accumulation of plaque in the arteries. The rate of accumulation is roughly proportional to the amount of blood flow over time, so direct arteries to the heart and brain along with the aorta and kidneys are especially affected, because they receive the most blood flow. Atherosclerosis shortens life by cutting off circulation to vital organs, and this can be catastrophic as in the case of heart attack, stroke or aneurysm. Atherosclerosis has been linked with all of the Hunter characteristics including belly fat, narrow hips, low HDL, elevated

triglycerides, and high blood sugar and insulin in both men and women. In addition, atherosclerosis accelerates faster as Hunter traits are accentuated. If a Hunter’s belly grows, or triglycerides or blood-sugar levels increase, the pace of atherosclerosis hastens. Developing high blood pressure can add fuel to the fire, with higher pressures putting more strain on the heart and blood vessels, increasing the plaque accumulation and contributing to a seemingly vicious cycle. The only solution is for Hunters is to eat a diet that prevents belly fat from accumulating, blood sugar going up, triglycerides rising and HDL dropping. That’s part of the reason why newer drugs like statins and blood-pressure medications have been so successful, because they’ve helped to slow the progress of atherosclerosis. Thus, medications can help, but they can’t help lose belly fat or improve fitness. Without the right diet and exercise, medications are only a stopgap measure. Unfortunately, the perfect storm of stress, high blood pressure, bad eating and lack of exercise is the environment where catastrophic things often happen.

Farmer Diseases

Farmers are less likely to get cardiovascular disease than Hunters. The predominant features of Farmers are usually protective factors against atherosclerosis — high levels of HDL and low levels of triglycerides, glucose and C-reactive protein (CRP). The protection these afford is probably a few extra years of life, relative to today’s Hunters, because of less cardiovascular disease. Current life expectancy in the United States averages 77.7 years, with women

averaging 80.2 years, and men 75.1. Farmers may do a little better than average, but their issues are that they contract more of the diseases of aging, like arthritis, cancer and Alzheimer’s. (It’s not that Farmers are necessarily more prone to those disorders, but because cancer is the second-biggest killer and Alzheimer ’s sixth, they’re statistically getting relatively more noncardiovascular diseases.) The chance of a Farmer getting a Farmer disease, or a Hunter getting a Hunter disease, increases as Farmers or Hunters age, or as they gain weight. That happens when they’re eating the wrong diet: a Farmer eating like a Hunter or vice versa. Just as the shape and physical characteristics of both Hunters and Farmers become accentuated when they gain weight, a slim Hunter and a slim Farmer are harder to tell apart. Even their blood results start looking more similar when they start losing weight. And their chances of getting Hunter or Farmer diseases go down, too. That’s the biggest reason for both Hunters and Farmers to maintain a healthy weight—to reduce their chances of getting sick. Mark Liponis, M.D., author of The Hunter/ Farmer Diet Solution, is the corporate medical director at Canyon Ranch Health Resorts. Take the Hunter/Farmer quiz to determine your type at

Mark will share ideas from his 17 years as a full time astrologer and intuitive consultant to help you get started or improve your practice. “[Yogananda] treated all people equally, and was as respectful toward any garage mechanic as toward someone prominent in the world of politics, business, or the arts. He used to walk with a cane — not, as a rule, because he needed one, but because to him a cane was like the danda, or wooden staff which many swamis carry in India as a reminder to keep their spines straight and to live more at their own center. A few days before he left his body, he went to a dilapidated shop to buy a new cane. It was a small item, but he wanted to be a conscientious custodian of the organization’s money, so he bargained carefully. Once he’d got the price he thought right, however, he looked about him. Seeing what a very poor shop it was, he gave the owner much more money than he’d saved by bargaining.” — Swami Kriyananda, author of Paramhansa Yogananda: A Biography A n a n d a

Personal Sun and Ascendant Messages Mars, your ruling planet, shifts from Virgo to Libra on July 3, and after several months of intense inner focus, attention turns to the realm of relationships. Negotiate your way forward, finding the right balance between self and others, giving and receiving, pursuit and attraction. On Aug. 15, Mars meets up with Saturn, making it clear where you need to take greater responsibility for restoring balance and harmony.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Mercury retro asks you to reconsider and rework the ground beneath your feet to create a more solid foundation and increase feelings of security. This could include making changes in your home, and healing past emotional hurts. In August, your ruling planet Venus steps into the fray of the Uranus-Pluto square, shaking up old perceptions of reality and shedding new light on the tension between freedom and security.

Gemini (May 21 - June 21) You’ve got great juju for using your mental agility and communication skills to take a quantum leap into the future you want to create. You can help activate this potential by joining up with collaborators who share your vision and ideals. Be willing to let go of old patterns of over-adapting yourself to fit in, telling “white lies,” and scattering your energy in too many directions.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22) The annual new moon in your sign on July 18 will be a powerful time to initiate a new life direction. Feel the spark of excitement, acknowledge the fears and resistance, and strategize your plan anyway. The trickster is at play in your career sector — trust the synchronistic unfolding of external events, and take charge of your inner life, where your true power resides.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) Mercury retro in your own sign calls for contemplating: Who am I? Does my outer personality match who I feel myself to be? How can I radiate more of my authenticity and creativity? At the Leo new moon on Aug. 17, you’ll be ready to reinvent yourself and shine your light into an inspiring new project. Enlist support from a friend to craft an intelligent and artful strategy.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Dream messages, intuitive hits and magical “coincidences” may offer more reliable guidance than your rational mind. Mercury reverses through your spiritual sector, urging you to reconnect with invisible sources of support, including your inner knowing. An unexpected or unusual collaboration could help you take a big leap forward in your career.

Libra (September 23 - October 23) Action planet Mars moves through your sign from July 3 to Aug. 23,

he trickster incarnates this summer, challenging conventional perceptions and inspiring ingenuity and experimentation as useful strategies. Uranus and Mercury — the astrological tricksters — will turn retrograde on July 13 and July 14, respectively. What’s Emily Trinkaus the most liberating reversal you can imagine for yourself and for the world? Mercury will be retrograde in Leo until Aug. 7, a time to rethink and reawaken your unique creative genius. The Sun will enter Virgo on Aug. 22, presenting an opportunity to integrate and synthesize the intense activity of the past few months. The Sun in earthy Virgo will oppose Neptune and Chiron in watery Pisces at the end of August, animating discernment and pragmatism to help you navigate the chaotic tides of change. This would be an ideal time to initiate or strengthen a daily spiritual practice.

boosting your vitality and confidence, and catalyzing into action changes that have been brewing beneath the surface. Renegotiating relationships will be a theme, and your ability to assert yourself will be tested. Speaking your truth with love will be your best way forward.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22) Your work life is up for reevaluation. Which long-term goals are worth putting your heart into? What about your work do you really love? How can you shift your perception and see professional possibilities from a new angle? Mars will move into your own sign on Aug. 23, strengthening your courage to take a powerful step toward your desires.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21) A variety of options are being presented to you — your challenge is to keep your mind open to diverse possibilities, but not get distracted from your goals. Be discerning, and as always, let your inspiration be your guide. Creative collaborations are auspicious now, especially if the project is experimental, unconventional or revolutionary.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) The full moon in your sign on July 3 brings to culmination an important personal project. Deep feelings are also likely to get stirred up, alerting you to elements of your life that have become stagnant or no longer reflect the truth of who you are. Explore your options — opportunities to grow in a new direction are available, if you’re willing to rethink some of your foundational truths.

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19) Reevaluate and renegotiate your relationships, as Mercury reverses through your partnership sector. Are you giving more than you’re receiving or vice versa? How can you experience more harmony with the significant others in your life? Revisiting and resolving past issues may be part of this process. On Aug. 1, the annual Aquarius full moon puts you in the spotlight, highlighting your creative success.

Pisces (February 20 - March 20) Mercury reverses through your self-care sector, asking you to take a close look at your daily routines. Is there a small adjustment you can make to increase your happiness and well-being? The full moon in your sign on Aug. 31 reveals an old story about the pain of the past that you’re ready to surrender. Allow outgrown perceptions to dissolve into the truth of your innate wholeness. laim your summer! That’s a nice way of saying that this summer is going to fly by quickly. If you want to get your sunshine fun in, you cannot wait for the right time — you just have to take it.

The enthusiastic planet of travel, Jupiter, recently moved into quick-paced Gemini. This supports quick trips, short classes, numerous small home and business projects, and keeping on the move. Although this rapidly changing energy is highly restless until June 2013, the bouncing from project to project part of it is strongest through this September. Those four- to five-day weekend trips are better supported than taking your world tour. If you do take the long trip, odds are good you will keep moving from place to place. Pack lightly so you can quickly adapt. In fact, the words adaptability and flexibility need to be your middle names this summer. Not to be negative — but to be realistic, be careful of planning trips into known fire zones. Near the Aug. 1 full moon, the planets are very strongly placed in the air (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) and fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) elements. Wind and fire do not mix well in national parks. Of course, it would be nice to go someplace dark to view the Perseids meteor shower on Aug. 12 to 13. This hot and blustery energy is amplified by another Mercury retrograde cycle. The communications planet gives the illusion of moving backward in heart-centered Leo from July 14 to Aug. 7. The way to take advantage of this normally disruptive cycle is to take actions to reconnect with the child within. In other words, make opportunities for play and creativity. Leo also asks you to look at where you need to step into leadership rather than waiting for someone else to take charge. If you have a great idea, then this Mercury retrograde cycle is an excellent time to do the behind the scenes planning and preparation. Part of the challenge to putting together a cohesive plan this summer comes through conflicting energy between Uranus and Pluto. To give you a feel for the destructive side of these planets, Pluto moved onto Capricorn Haiti’s natal chart in 2010 and they had a massive earthquake. When Uranus moved into Aries last year, the Japan earthquake hit. And, those two disruptive planets were not even aligned when those earth events took place. Now these transforming and revolutionizing planets are combining their talents in a challenging 90-degree relationship called

a square. It would be wise to make friends with Uranus and Pluto since they will be in a power struggle dance until spring 2015. Regardless of your thoughts on the coming end to the Mayan calendar, it is evident that planet Earth and her residents are in major times of transition. Old paradigms and outdated systems simply do not work anymore. Pluto forces you to release your death grip on old patterns and behaviors. Uranus revolutionizes outdated value system so you can live in a higher balance. Both operate under that famous principle, “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.” Instead of taking a fearful approach to the coming changes, understand that the world is undertaking a major renovation. You incarnated at this time to support the shift into the next level of planetary consciousness, so why fear that which you knowingly came into this life to create? It is to be expected that there will be changes in where and how you live. Many people will either move in the coming year, or explore new locations with their intent on setting up a new home base starting the summer of 2013. Instead of thinking about what you are leaving behind, this summer’s energy supports forward thinking. Since Pluto burns your bridges behind you, and Uranus blows everything up, you might as well look forward. Beyond all the outer world chaos, you can find your heart center this summer. You can make changes now based upon your connection to your higher self. That is the part of you that knows you have volunteered to be on planet Earth for these shifts that you already knew were coming. One final note: The two weeks leading up to the Aug. 17 new moon help you take action on a longer-term plan. Ambitious Mars aligns with Saturn to help you create your divine plan in the mundane world. Have some fun this summer, because the emotional tone changes in October. ast summer I had the opportunity to discover a remarkably inspiring and consciousness-shifting cultural phenomenon that has been evolving for more than 15 years, yet has remained predominantly “below the radar” of mainstream awareness: The transformational summer festivals movement. As writer, DJ and speaker Jeet Kei Leung says during an engaging and dynamic TED talk about transformational festival culture, these transformational festivals are “convergence points for many forms of cutting-edge content. They are playing a significant role in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people,” and this has a palpable ripple effect out into society at large. With participant-driven art, ceremony, healing spaces, music circles and a wide variety of forms of creative and spiritual expression, transformational festivals invite us to “come together and inspire and empower each other to be our best selves, our brightest selves, to find our place in value within a community, to step into our leadership and our mastery, and to start to create real change,” says Jamaica Stevens, producer of Tribal Convergence.

Festival Power

At festivals such as these, thought-leaders, change-agents and evolutionaries can come together to revitalize their spirits and fill their cups. Additionally, with festival staff and volunteers living together during the month the festival is held, they explore their edges, seeding new systems for being together sustainably and harmoniously in community. In this way, the group generates measurable positive outcomes, which can then be brought back to the communities of these leaders. Live visionary art painting, prayerformances, spiritual workshops, nature mandalas and mini temples all around, combined with the late-night tribal ecstatic dance to sacred, prayerful music, creates an incredibly magical and uplifting experience. I was particularly struck by a quote from a participant of the Beloved festival, speaking to the profound places that these experiences were able to touch and transform in their own personal process: “We went deep! Many of us are now calling it a ‘work,’ much like an annual ritual or ceremony where we drop away what we do not need and invite in what has been knocking on the door all along.”

A Mystic Gathering

The Mystic Garden Gathering happens on July 18-23 at Lake Selmac in Southern Oregon. This activating gathering of the tribes features some of the highest-level emergent spiritual and holistic-wellness offerings, top musical acts, visionary art, yoga and workshops. Phil Lindsey, founder of Mystic Garden Gathering, shared the following insights with me: “I deeply resonate with the Dalai Lama’s interview in Ode Magazine where he says that what the world needs at the moment is more emphasis on friendship, community building and gathering together for festivals. “Through holding space for Mystic Garden Gathering, we are casting the net far and wide for resonant people to come plant their seeds and play in this safe, heart-centered garden where we can really New Conneüion July/August 2012

drop our armor, and bloom into more of our truest selves in an energy field which is infused with intention and the expansive exuberance of collective awakening. Festivals like Mystic showcase some of the highest-level emergent spiritual and holistic-wellness offerings, art and workshops from our evolutionary West Coast culture, and many of these teachers and workshop leaders serve as significant role models and mentors for the next generation of cultural-creatives.” I was inspired by how vibrant and dynamic so many of the people who flock to these festivals are, and how much co-activation takes place when they converge to exchange inspiration, teachings, spiritual practices, healing, arts and music. Councils of elders and wisdom-holders are often held, sharing prayers and visions for ways of being in community and being in connection with the land that merge our new reality with ancient wisdom, and create a bright legacy to pass on to our chil-

dren. The idea is not that one festival organizer or spiritual teacher has the solution, but that we can come together and find the solutions collectively.

Spontaneous Healing

Another potent aspect of these events is that emergent fusions of healing arts both new and ancient are synergistically joining together, and as Kei Leung notes and I have also personally experienced, these healing containers “support spontaneous episodes of healing catharsis” and clearing out unexpressed emotional trauma that is often bottled up in our mainstream society. In these supportive and resonant energy fields, we realize that it is safe to let our guard down and speak and act from our hearts. These gatherings create a safe testing-ground in which to explore the cocreation of a new reality and new ways of being with one another. These festivals are often timed in harmony with the moon cycles, and seek to bring participants back into greater harmony

Notes from a Bicycle Bodhisattva By Carmen Mills

nce upon a time I went for a ride on Cortes Island in British Columbia, with a sore knee, a rusty chain and a battered heart. I had no destination in mind, and I chugged over hill after hill until finally the gears seized. I leaned the heavy old bike against a sign in the shape of a wheel and started to walk. An odd warm wind was pulling me forward, playing gently through the fine hairs on my forearms. I heard the distant chime of wind bells and kept following the dusty path, arriving finally at Dorje Ling Dharma Centre — an ersatz Tibetan fantasy of cedar and film set castoffs, rusted metal and sky. I walked into the meditation hall and knew I was home. Years of cycling in city traffic make a person brave, and in that moment I called up all I the courage I could gather. I walked under the prayer flags and stayed for six months, while my dharmic path and my bicycle path merged into a single lane. At Dorje Ling I investigated one particular 2,500-year-old road map, but there are so many ways to awakening. The bicycle path is another bumpy road to liberation, which every six-year-old recognizes the first time the parent lets go of the seat and she flies free. The experience of selfpropelled flight is a taste of freedom from parental control and, later, from governmental and social restriction. It offers freedom from the repressive craving for vehicular status: that perfect car as promised on TV. Freedom from the global matrix of fossil-fuel addiction. Freedom from suffering through boredom, ill health and lethargy. Freedom from the sodden weight of empty consumption. Freedom from slavery to financial debt. Freedom from the sucking maw of bad credit and bad karma, where we sell off our world’s future for today’s speedy commute. Freedom, yah man, freedom, I say, freedom! Freedom lives in the notion of Zen — of simple elegance of function and form. Zen lives in the bike’s spare geometry, a simple

tool kit and a drop of oil. My life on the bike path has trained me to appreciate the minimal. With the bicycle as my primary mode of transportation and recreation, it is clear how little I really need in order to be content, how much is superfluous, how most of my needs can be so well satisfied with so little. Bike-tour adventuring especially has turned me into a minimalist — who the heck wants to cart all that junk up a hill? To this day, whenever I pack a bag for a trip I agonize over whether I really need three tank tops, or whether two are enough. I don’t need a house or a storage locker, and I certainly don’t need a garage. My needs are few and my debts are none, Carmen Mills and thus I am rich beyond words. Cycling can be good meditation. Meditation expands the mind, makes it calmer and stronger. I think of the scene in the movie Deux secondes where newbie Montreal bike courier (hottie Charlotte Laurier) zones out on her run and spins off into reverie, jolted back at last by the squawk of her radio to find herself far away, in the Quebec farmland. Every cyclist can identify with the experience of getting into the zone, leaving the self behind as boundaries dissolve into the rhythm of the ride. The circular forward motion, the merging of self into air — merging into everything, and into nothing. Becoming one with the big picture. Riding a bike breaks down the physical and conceptual barriers between our selves and the world. When it comes to

with the earth’s rhythms. Ancient tribal rituals such as shamanic trance dance, vocal toning and sounding circles, and full moon ceremonies are rediscovered, catalyzing many vitalizing experiences of personal metamorphosis, that are a deeply welcomed contrast to our fast-paced, hightech daily culture. As Kei Leung befittingly sums it up: “These temporary autonomous zones (allow us to) escape for a moment from the hierarchies and agendas embedded into the very material of our mainstream consensus reality, and we are freed to co-create and share the momentary realization of the liberated world we would wish to live in.” Excerpted from an article by Prema Gaia, a freelance writer, new world consciousness publicist and co-founder of the Goddess Temple of Ashland. eradicating the deadly illusion of separation, surely there’s nothing like biking for getting all up close and personal with the universe. The air, the concrete, the bugs and roadkill, and trees — there they are, right in your face. When humans are liberated from metal cages, we smell the smells and hear the sounds — all of them, from the toxic to the divine. We’re all in the soup together. We see the horror and mad beauty of the city that drivers will never slow down enough to apprehend. And we get to see our sleek and beautiful selves, mirrored in the eyes of our cycling sangha — our community of practitioners — as they flash by in smiling conspiracy. The freedom of cycling gets into our blood, and we stop being self-conscious, we lose our consciousness of self. We start to know in our physical bones that if we treat ourselves well, then we treat our planet well. And if we are doing no harm and defending our planet, then we are healthier people — we have more fun, and we have more energy to give back to the world. Everything we do for the good of “others” rebounds right back at us. There is no separation. Bicycles are karma-generating machines, relieving suffering for self and for others. Bicycles provide the strength, spirit and courage that warriors need. Courage to follow the path. What goes around comes around, and around and around and around. Like a wheel, spinning true. Gay Conversations with God, James Alexander Langteaux, Findhorn Press, 2012, $19.95

This is not a politically correct book, but often the raw truth isn’t easy to hear. James Alexander Langteaux is a television producer who worked for Christian broadcasting networks alongside several notable evangelists, including Pat Robertson. But while spreading the good news, Langteaux was leading a double life: he is a gay man who loves God. A Bible passage about Peter led Langteaux to a personal revelation: God breaks the rules to welcome outsiders in. In his own irreverently funny yet heartbreakingly honest way, Langteaux points out the rejection of the gay T O R’ DI community in specific by the Christian fundamentalist establishment and in general by society. The CHOICE emotional toll of being told that he is an abomination in the eyes of God almost broke Langteaux, but from his despair arose his own gospel of hope: God is madly and passionately in love with all of his kids — gay, straight or somewhere in between. Boldly and without apology, Gay Conversations with God welcomes all people of faith into the fold, right where they belong. — Vicky Thompson

Healing Yoga for Your Heart, Thriving Yoga, 2011, $19.99 If you or someone you love suffers from heart disease or high blood pressure, try this great beginner yoga DVD with instructor Denise Hopkins. The basic yoga poses, stretches and deep breathing exercises are helpful in clearing stress and releasing tight spots in the body. It’s a clear and easy to understand series of yoga poses with a nice final relaxation to help you unwind. — Annette Epifano

Nutripuncture, Patrick Veret, Christina Cuomo, Fabio Burigana and Antonio Dell’Aglio, Healing Arts Press, 2012, $19.95 Nutripuncture works with the body’s energy pathways or meridians like acupuncture and acupressure but without needles. This approach to healing uses minerals and trace elements, which are essential to cellular life. Researchers discovered that when minerals are combined in a specific sequence, the patterns created by these “nutris” give life to a language to which the body recognizes and responds. The effect is almost immediate. The ingested trace elements trigger, via the taste buds, an electromagnetic activity that encourages information to circulate and bring about overall well-being in

the body. The electromagnetic path uses biophotons or light particles, which play a role in cell communication. Nutripuncture doesn’t fight against stress, it is a means of stimulating our vitality. This detailed and informative book is a great read for anyone interested in learning more about a new form of healing, especially those who have not tried acupuncture due to a needle phobia. — Annette Epifano

The Basic Code of the Universe, Massimo Citro, Park Street Press, 2011, $24.95 Italian doctor Massimo Citro thinks outside the box of the current dominant scientific paradigm. He challenges readers to understand that everything that we believe to be real is actually only perceptions received through our senses in our own individual reality. Readers may appreciate the in-depth scientific aspect to the writing. Nobel Peace Prize nominee Ervin Laszlo provided the foreward for the book and gives his esteemed and respected recommendation. Citro draws on the research and works of many international scientists. Taken as a whole, the information presented will jolt readers into being convinced that indeed, the world is not as it appears. We come to learn and understand that our world is as it is simply because that is how we experience it as human beings. Reality is adapted to the sensory systems we were born with as humans. But that is not the truth. Wow — a mind-altering book. — Alice R. Berntson

that we don’t need to sleep to dream. Dreaming also encompasses the entire imaginal realm, including meditation. His method of “active dreaming” involves reentering dreams to explore possibilities and to direct the subconscious to clarify and solve problems. Dreaming is not a passive activity. Active dreamers learn that they always have choices, and can choose to not buy into self-limiting beliefs or those imposed by others. Dreaming means waking up to sources of guidance, healing and creativity — journeying beyond selflimitation to a life of freedom. Of course the underlying premise is that we need to pay attention to our dreams, whether they occur while asleep or awake. — Alice R. Berntson

Making Miracles, Lynn Woodland, Namaste Publishing, 2011, $16.95 Just when you think you know a lot about the law of attraction and quantum physics, you read a book that really pushes your reality and current belief systems to new frontiers. Woodland invites you on a journey to make miracles happen and manifest your heart’s desires. She defines miracles as “events born in unconditional love.” She describes many mind-bending findings of quantum physicists, for example, subatomic particles have been observed to behave in the way the observer chooses. How matter shows up depends on our mind’s choice. Reality is really a matter of choice. Also there are particles that can leap from one place to another without moving through the space between in a linear point A to point B fashion. She also talks about experiments where subjects could not only influence random patterns occurring in the present but in the past. This suggests we can change the past with conscious intention. — Annette Epifano

Now read the untold story in a new biography. By his direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda Paramhansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi brought yoga alive for millions of readers. Now, one of his last remaining direct disciples tells previously untold and surprising stories of this great spiritual teacher and master: his teenage miracles, his challenges in coming to America, his national lecture campaigns, his struggles to fulfill his world-changing mission amid painful betrayals, and his ultimate triumphant achievement. Relationships of the Soul, from page 1

Ahimsa, from page 1

you, even in the hardest situations. As I’ve said: “They’re meant to be mirrors for us, always reflecting back what we need to see and hear.” The question is this: “Do you want to look in this mirror, and be open to what you need to learn, or simply pretend it’s not there and pass it by?” If you look back at all your relationships, whatever the situation, you’ll begin to see a pattern. The learning process is all part of guiding you in the direction of where you’re supposed to be. If enough people constantly encourage you to change something in your life, or take up a new hobby, or change something about the way you approach life, perhaps there’s a message there.

long as there is any thought of separation between you and the rest of life, there will be tension. That’s why Jesus said that if you have anything against your brother, make peace with him before you go into the temple. He was speaking of the inner temple of communion with God. When you meditate, begin by sending out waves of blessings to all. If there is anyone with whom you have had a difference, send him your love. Until you develop this attitude, you will never be able meditate deeply. Subconscious antagonism will keep you tensed physically, as well as egotistically aloof from the great stream of life into which meditation should help you merge. With deeper levels of relaxation, you are able to release all attachments to the body, to the mind and to the world. Ultimately you relax into samadhi, or cosmic consciousness, which Patanjali says is the final stage on the journey to superconscious union with the divine.

Life-Changing Moment

Equally, a certain relationship can be the catalyst for a major shift. I was 17 years old when a friend took me to see my first psychic. In the reading, I was told I would live in California, that I would write books, and that I was psychically gifted. Well, being a typical teenager, I just said: “Yeah okay — right.” That one incident was to be the start of a life-long journey of learning and understanding, as I became aware of spirituality and my own psychic gift. I often wonder in what direction my life would have gone if my friend hadn’t taken me to that psychic. Maybe I would have discovered my abilities and spirituality anyway, but much later in life. My friend will never know just how much of a catalyst she was for me. Perhaps our relationship had been two kindred souls connecting and fate had played its part. When people hear the words kindred souls, they automatically think of a love connection. A kindred soul can also be someone who tests your very nerves, but in the end has stretched your potential beyond what you thought possible. Everyone’s has these types of relationships, you just need to take the time and look into your past. Please remember not all relationships have to be one-on-one with just one individual. They can be with a group, an organization, a pet, or even an incident or situation.

Relationship Lesson

Write down in your journal the relationships you’ve had in the past, and see if they’ve guided you in the direction of where you are now, or did they lead you away from your purpose? On another page, write down all the relationships that are happening in your life right now. Ask yourself: “What am I learning from this relationship? What qualities am I developing? Is this relationship for my highest good? How can I make this relationship better? Are we learning from each other? What have I learned or am still learning about myself through this relationship? Are the people in my life empowering and encouraging me to be all that I can be?” Within every relationship, there’s an encoded lesson that you’ve hopefully learned or still need to learn. Some relationships are simply there for you to experience love, or it could be showing you what you don’t want in your next relationship. So when it’s time to develop a relationship, you’ll be more aware and have the ability to manifest the type of relationship you want — one that serves your highest purpose. Whatever the case, when you learn to open your heart and view relationships through the eyes of your soul, you’ll discover an even better relationship that’s waiting for you — the relationship of your soul-self.
