The Energies of Love

The Key to Fulfilling Relationships By Dondi Dahlin

“You must know, of course, how much I love you. But the fundamental and most vicious, swinish, murderous and unchangeable fact is that we totally misunderstand each other. We operate on alien wavelengths. I love you and I always will. Come back to me as soon as you can.” — Quoted from a love letter by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor

nd therein lies the dilemma, not only for couples, but for the troubles between parents and children, coworkers, and even political rivals. But finally, the science of these “alien wavelengths” is being developed. While too late to help Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, much of great value is available to you right now.

In The Energies of Love, a forthcoming book and upcoming Portland workshop by husband-wife team Donna Eden and David Feinstein, they try to crack the code of these alien wavelengths that plague relationships of all kinds. The couple, well-known for their pioneering work in the field of Energy Medicine, claims that they had to figure out ways to apply their understanding of energy to help overcome the relationship challenges that have emerged from time to time in their own 34 years together. For instance, Eden’s fundamental energy style is exquisitely attuned to the vibrations around her. This is part of her gift as a healer. Under relationship stress, her energies concentrate in the center of her heart. They become slow and heavy until she feels her heart is about to burst or

she is about to drown. Her grounding and stability are compromised as the energies in her hips, legs and feet become weak. Rational thought is not supported as her most vital energies are pulled away from her brain. For Feinstein, on the other hand, under relationship stress the energy accumulates in his forebrain. He overrides the raw vibration of the environment with mental constructs. His awareness gets cut off energetically from his heart while a rich choreography of energy unfolds within his brain. Energy from his back brain rushes to his cerebral cortex, the front brain, with a primal force. The verbal reasoning and logic of the front brain lend their voice to the primitive needs of his back brain, giving them the appearance of clarity and calmness. This seems to him to be the paragon of rational, civilized thought. Not only do the energies of his heart have no pathways to consciousness, Eden’s energies bounce off like rubber bands shot at a granite wall. Her logic, feelings and desperate pleas do not upset Feinstein, who is not consciously trying to dismiss her. Eden’s concerns are just not relevant, and he is sure they will be put to rest when she grasps the logic of his superior understanding. With that apparently irreconcilable difference coming out in full force in 1978, about a year into their relationship — at the point where the early glow had faded into the infamous “stage two” that most relationships must pass through to get to a deeply fulfilling partnership — the couple was on their own to figure out how to reconcile their considerable differences. The system they developed — both through Feinstein’s work as a clinical psychologist and in Eden’s energy healing — emphasizes the way every relationship begins with the meeting of two very different energies. These energies come together and merge into a new energy field that has literally never before existed on the planet. And the partners are left to their own devices to figure out how to make it work. Meanwhile, this union of energies determines the way they communicate, the way they fight, the way they love, and the way they want to be loved. Even deeper than the psychology of you and your partner, according to Eden and Feinstein, relationship is about energy. “We often joke, or half-joke, that if we can make it, any couple can make it,” Eden and Feinstein write in Energies of

Love. “While our basic values, mercifully, complement one another’s effortlessly, our personalities, temperaments and lifestyle inclinations don’t. David thrives in dry hot weather, Donna withers. Donna’s interests and attention jump like fire in a dozen different directions; David’s plodding intense focus is annoyingly jerked from its course with her every new enthusiasm. David organizes his life around projects that make him feel well-utilized and worthy; Donna functions best moment by moment. Donna works most effectively within an unhurried, unscheduled, organic pace; David has been compared to a freight train when he is engaged in a project. Donna’s disposition is to yield to the other person’s ways, so even though David is attracted to her for her joyful nature, his more somber style sets their tone. She then feels invisible and discounted; he wonders why her friends bring out the person he wants to be with while he so often doesn’t.” Their program shows how to work your way out of such entanglements with your partner, along with ways to turn your differences into strengths and areas

of stagnation into renewal. What is most unusual in their approach is that much of it does not focus on psychological issues, communication styles, good will or love. A major focus is directly on each partner’s energies and how they interact. The energies of relationship are the invisible hand that leaves two people happy or miserable, frustrated or content, in harmony or not in harmony, on alien wavelengths or in a good flow with one another. They are at play in all relationships: parent/child, boss/employee, and friend/friend as well as couples. In their workshop, Eden and Feinstein share how to use Energy Medicine and Energy Psychology to recognize your own and your partner’s energetic styles, and how to bridge the two styles, navigating your way to greater harmony, deeper love and an energy that supports you both. Many of the principles apply to any close or impactful relationship. Donna Eden and David Feinstein present an Energies of Love workshop on July 8-10 in Portland. Visit

He also is known as the Peace Troubadour, having performed concerts in many of the world’s hottest war zones. And he has directed or produced four feature films, including the award-winning Indigo. Now James is ready to embark in a very new direction — in Portland — one he has envisioned for many years but only now feels ready to launch. “I bought a house in Portland a few years ago,” he explains, “but spent most of my time traveling between here and Ashland where I had been living for the last 10 years. Around four months ago I took the leap and moved to Portland full time. The main reason was that I wanted to spend my time and energy developing something I’ve been envisioning for a long time — to start a new kind of spiritual community that meets every Sunday morning. In other words, we’re not starting a church, but

a community that is alive and vibrant, focused on worship and mysticism, meeting every week to create and support its members. Portland is such an ex- James Twyman traordinary city and needs something equally unique to express its spiritual diversity. I really believe that if such a foundation were laid here, hundreds of people would come. That’s why I’ve moved to Portland — to start the Beloved CommUNITY.” When asked how this new community would be different than the other New Thought ministries in Portland, Twyman didn’t hesitate. “There are a number of really wonderful churches here in Portland,” he says. “All of them seem to address a Continued on page 19

Editor’s Journey 2011: Return to Balance

• This I Believe •

Step 4: Create a New Personal Balance Paradigm

ivine feminine energy flows silently, hidden below the surface. Where does it come from? It comes from nothing — the infinite source of all potential. How do you access this hidden power? By living life awake, always questioning and observing. Since the early 1900s, three streams of divine feminine energy have been Vicky Thompson slowly returning to change the world’s mindset: compassion versus domination, nurturing versus betrayal and strength versus corruption. In 2011, a fourth divine feminine energy is emerging: balance versus power. This final energy completes the four pillars of the divine feminine way: compassion, nurturing, strength and balance. Join us on the editor’s journey to create this new way of living. Returning to balance takes six simple steps: 1) Open to the balanced heart. 2) Affirm your commitment to peace. 3) Remember the inner warrior. 4) Create a new personal balance paradigm. 5) Practice the way of compassion, and 6) Celebrate the reunion of the masculine and feminine. A paradigm represents the box holding society’s thinking, the social norms that are accepted and practiced by the majority. There are accepted norms and beliefs about spirituality, which many people separate from religion. Spirituality has evolved over the last century, moving away from strict organized religion to an acceptance of an inner connection to the spiritual realm. Since spirituality encompasses the world of the personal, the inner landscape of the individual, this new divine feminine energy moves you toward creating your own personal balance paradigm. What gives you the right to create your own creed? Nothing. And from nothing, you can create everything. What does a balance paradigm look like? Coming from nothing, it takes on the form of your unique spiritual heart. The heart has a shape, a function — a way of supporting and giving energy to your body and your life. Your balance paradigm is your unique energy signature expressed through your physical body and daily choices. In ballet, a balance step is performed by lightly shifting the weight from foot to foot, knees flexed and ready to adjust position.

Shifting, moving, ever nimble, you are ready to take on life’s challenges without holding onto the past. This moment, this new reality, is your power, your stabilizing force. Nothing leads you, nothing guides you, and you respond with nimble grace to every experience.

• Community Spotlight•

Imagine yourself swaying, rocking from side to side. You make small adjustments to keep your balance, to stay in check and keep your footing. But you are never still, never stuck with your feet on the ground. This is how your balance paradigm works. You are attuned to your inner stabilization methods, your inner guidance that constantly readjusts for life’s circumstances to lead you back to equilibrium, back to a point of dynamic balance. Shifting, moving, ever nimble, you are ready to take on life’s challenges without holding onto the past. This moment, this new reality, is your power, your stabilizing force. Nothing leads you, nothing guides you, and you respond with nimble grace to every experience. A paradigm suggests structure. Your new balance paradigm is a series of four questions to ask yourself during tough experiences: What is happening in this moment? Why do I care? What is my role in creating change? Am I willing to change? Simply, the new balance paradigm is about observing, feeling, empowering and growing. By observing the truth of the situation, you can feel what this experience means to you. Then you empower yourself by choosing what role to take on. Now you move forward, ready to change and grow. Let’s say that you’ve been diagnosed with cancer. What is happening in this moment? My body is in peril and needs help.

ove. Kindness. Justice. Service. Virtues are the very meaning and purpose of our lives, the content of our character and the truest expression of our souls. For people of all cultures, ethnicities and beliefs, they are the essence of authentic success. Virtue means power, strength, inner quality. Virtues are the content of our character, the elements of the human spirit. They grow stronger whenever we use them. As a six-year-old once said, “Virtues are what’s good about us.” Each of us has both strength virtues we can rely on, and growth virtues that are the challenges of our character. A lifelong learner never gives up hope that at any moment, we can awaken a virtue by choosing to live it. The Virtues Project is all about bringing virtues to life. The Bahá’í Community of Beaverton and New Thought Center for Spiritual Living are co-sponsors of a Spiritual Virtues summer camp for children ages four to 12. Participants will be welcomed into a warm and accepting space where they will be gently guided to discover the gifts of virtues that live within them. Children will have the opportunity to make new friends and experience unity between spiritual communities. The summer camp will be offered on Aug. 1-4 from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Beaverton Bahá’í Center. Visit

Gratitude Through Reiki

y passion as an energy healer and Reiki master teacher is simply knowing that every day I am able to help people find more light, happiness, mindfulness and physical wellness in their lives. Reiki dramatically changed my life and has allowed me to heal and grow on many levels. Reiki is a technique that increases the supply and flow of the body’s vital energy, allowing the body to gain strength and feel strong again. Reiki energy allows tension in the body’s muscles and systems to release, thus increasing the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients, and speeding the healing process. Your ability to more readily deal with new stress and illness is enhanced significantly. One of the five ideals of the teachings of Usui Reiki is: “Just for today, be grateful.” By living in a heart filled with gratitude, we create a universal energy that affects our individual wellness, and as a collective energy, the wellness of all life on Earth. Starting with an attitude of gratitude is a great first step. Research shows that grateful individuals report having more energy and less physical complaints than their nongrateful counterparts. Also daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism and energy. For several years, I felt that something was missing in my life and I had lost my faith. Reiki allowed me to view the world again as if through the eyes of a child, filled with wonder, amazement and gratefulness of the abundance of the universe. — Tammy Slate, Reiki master teacher

ower animals are spirit guides in animal form and valuable allies who can help you navigate through life’s challenges and transitions. You can turn to these perceptive and trustworthy oracles for advice and counsel regarding any questions or concerns, for they are exceptional t e achers who will help you learn about both the spirit and the natural world. Working with them on a regular basis will enSteven Farmer hance your personal life and expand your spiritual capacities immensely. Power animals can appear in meditations, visions, dreams, shamanic journeys or on the earth in their physical form. They can be mammals, birds or reptiles — even so-called mythical creatures such as unicorns or dragons can be power animals, although they have no physical representations in the material world. However, since spirit animals’ power is drawn from their instinctual and wild nature, it’s uncommon for purely domesticated animals such as pets to be part of this group. The source of power for your animal spirit guide won’t just be a single animal, but the entire species. For instance, if your power animal is Bear, it won’t be just one particular bear, but an animal spirit guide that’s representative of the entire species of bears. Consequently, you’ll probably develop a greater appreciation for all bears, and likely extend that care and respect to the animal kingdom as a whole. If Dolphin is your power animal, for example, your love and appreciation will likely go out to all creatures of the sea and naturally expand to include those of the land and the air. Your animal will also teach

Find Your Power Animal By Steven Farmer

you to use this power compassionately, to heal and empower yourself and others. The good news is that we can recover our power animal or even discover a new one by opening our hearts, minds and souls to this notion. Your power animal may come to you in meditations, visions, dreams or shamanic journeys. If you’ve had a particular affinity or attraction for an animal, it’s most likely this is your power animal. Just recently someone wrote and asked what I thought her power animal was. She went on to describe how hawks have shown up for her much of her life, especially in the past few weeks, and was wondering if this could perhaps be her power animal. I wrote back and basically confirmed what she already knew, that Hawk was her main animal spirit guide or power animal. Your power animal may leave you at some point, even if you’ve paid attention to her over the years. Usually that means that the relationship has served its purpose,

and another power animal either is or will be coming into your life. I’ve observed how these spirit guides will enter into our lives at a time when we most need their particular expression of spiritual power. For instance, if you’re moving into a position of leadership, Cougar spirit may very well leap into your life as power animal, helping you with confidence and clarity in your leadership roles. If you’re going through a major transformative process with big changes, you may find Snake spirit or Butterfly coming into your life as a power animal. Another interesting facet is that often your power animal is reflective of your personality characteristics. For instance, Rachel is slight of build, energetic, with a tendency to move very quickly, often juggling several tasks at once, flitting from one to the other. It’s no accident that her power animal turned out to be Hummingbird. Gary is a fairly large man, gentle by nature, yet very capable of standing up

for himself or for others as needed. No one messes with him. No surprise that his power animal is Bear. Other questions that come up are about cats or dogs being power animals. Generally domesticated animals can’t be power animals because they’ve lost much of their wildness and are removed from the natural world. Likewise, some traditions believe that insects should be excluded from being power animals because of their size and nature. Generally true, however in my book Power Animals, Dragonfly and Butterfly both argued vehemently about being included, so I relented and included them. I see now the wisdom of that, as they both offer unique types of power. Yet another question that comes up on occasion is about mythological or etherical animals, such as dragons or unicorns. Although some would insist that they exist in third dimensional reality, it really doesn’t matter whether they do or not. If you believe they do, then they do. Any of these so-called mythological animals can certainly be your power animal. The only disadvantage is that they’re not commonly seen in the physical world as are other kinds of animals. This is a highly personal and specialized relationship with an animal spirit guide. It’s not one you choose in the usual sense of the word. It’s more of a soul-to-soul connection, your soul bonding with the soul — or more accurately the oversoul — of the animal. The relationship is one to be nurtured and attended to on a regular basis, and if done, will last a number of years. The Bicycle as a Vehicle for Transformation By Philip Shepherd

t the age of 18, like most of us at that age, I stood on the threshold of possibility. In my case, that threshold opened onto a clear fork in the road. One path led to a prestigious university, where I’d been accepted to study physics. The other road led into the great unknown on the seat of a bicycle. That second path needs a little explaining — and the explanation actually involves an ancient form of classical Japanese theater called Noh. I had studied its writings, and seen a touring company perform it, and it was simply the most radical art form I’d ever encountered: exquisitely moving, scorchingly human and, to my Western sensibilities, utterly baffling. At the time, understanding Noh seemed like a greater challenge than understanding physics. As a teenager, though, I didn’t have any money to speak of, so just flying to Japan to study Noh wasn’t an option. On the other hand, it seemed not unreasonable (I was 18, remember) that if I went to England and bought a bicycle, and started pedaling, and kept heading in the right direction, and didn’t stop pedaling, and caught a few ferries where necessary, that I would eventually arrive. And so off into the great unknown I headed, poised on my bicycle seat. As it turned out, the trip not only got me to Japan, it set the course for the rest of my life. Cycling through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, India and Japan, I deepened into my self and into the world. I spent weeks at a time outside, cycling by day and bedding down under the stars (and occasionally the rain clouds) by night. Sustained by the whispered rhythms of wind and sun, sky and stone, trees and grasses, I was nourished by the world, and nourished by the revelations of each mile. I moved through each day with a certain ease — despite the long hours of pedaling, and the uncertainty that every bend in the road presented. Or possibly because of them. I think the ease I found grew naturally out of my chosen means of transport. The bike exposes you to both yourself and the world around you, and so enables a reconciliation of the two — which is, I believe, the foundation of true ease. The bike exposes you to yourself in a hundred ways. Propelled forward by your own desire and your body’s energy, you explore the terrain and limits of each. With no distractions that endlessly occupy our 21st century landscape, you directly encounter

See the World from Your Bike Of necessity, you grow more and more deeply into your body — into its needs, its strengths and its bottomless intelligence. At the same time you grow more deeply into the world around you. the kaleidoscope of your own thoughts and feelings as each day unfolds. Of necessity, you grow more and more deeply into your body — into its needs, its strengths and its bottomless intelligence. At the same time you grow more deeply into the world around you. Because the bike is virtually silent, you hear each bird cry, human voice and rustling tree you pass. Because the bike is unenclosed, you feel the world’s sun and witness its clouds shifting overhead. You feel the pull of the breeze, taste its dust and seawater sting. You smell the lush earth. You experience the downpours and heat and cold of the passing weather, and you learn that in the midst of all that, in the core of yourself, you are just fine.

Your exposure to the world is not limited to the orchestrations of nature all around. You are also exposed to people. If you drive in a car across the Great Syrian Desert and pass someone walking along the road, they represent no more than a sort of postcard to you, noticed through the windshield — and you represent no more than a car to them, its passengers largely hidden from sight. If you are on a bike, the experience is very different: each of you is present to the other under the vast sky, and for a moment you share the world it gazes upon. More often than not, you exchange a glance, a wave, maybe even a word or two. In our modern lives we tend to seek and retreat into forms of solitary confinement: we find it in our cars, our homes, our ear buds and Blackberries and computers and work stations. The vulnerability of traveling on a bicycle requires the opposite: a heightened attunement to the world around you, all your senses opened, and completely at rest in your body — even as you propel yourself along city streets, mountain trails, or desert highways. I still feel something lacking in my day if I haven’t gone for a spin on my bike, and met the world and been transformed by it. Spirit Zone: The Spiritual Side of Sports By Steve Taylor

he connection between sport and spirituality might seem hard to see at first. You don’t see much evidence of spirituality at a soccer match, with 22 men running around a field chasing a ball and another 50,000 fans shouting and gesticulating at them. There is, however, a pronounced psychic and spiritual aspect to sport, which the best athletes are familiar with, even though they may not use the word spiritual to describe it. It’s possible to say that the desire to experience spiritual well-being is one reason we play sports. According to psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, sport is important because it’s one of the most readily available ways of

Spiritual teachers tell us that psychic and paranormal abilities emerge naturally in higher states of consciousness, as a side effect of spiritual progress, and athletes occasionally experience these. They often speak

was like a slow-mo replay and everything was quiet, like some mystical dream, until my right hand made contact with the ball. Then everything zipped back into conscious time, I landed and bounced on the floor and the noise erupted, as if someone had turned off the mute button.” At this dhyana (meditation) level, other types of strange phenomena can occur too. Many distance runners have reported seeing glimpses of the inside of their own bodies while running (which is one of the paranormal abilities the ancient yoga philosopher Patanjali describes in his Yoga Sutras). Short-distance runners, on the other hand, often experience a phenomenon called tipping, in which they feel that they are rising into the air and becoming extremely light as they run. More dramatically, athletes might feel a sudden in-rush of great strength and energy, as if they’ve made contact with a giant energy reservoir inside them which is normally inaccessible. Sports can also take us beyond the psychic level, and give us what I call awakening experiences — spiritual or mystical experiences of heightened awareness, connection and unity. Other more sedate sports can give rise to awakening experiences. The English poet Ted Hughes often experienced a meditative state while fishing. Hughes notes that in order to write poetry you have to have the ability to intensely focus your mind, and he believes that he acquired this ability

generating the state of being he calls flow. This is the state we experience when our attention is completely absorbed in an activity, and our awareness of our surroundings and ourselves fades away. It’s not the passive absorption of watching television, but the active absorption we experience when we fully concentrate and make powerful mental efforts — when we perform challenging, stimulating, creative activities like learning a foreign language or a musical instrument, painting or playing sports. Flow enables us to take control of our own consciousness, and step beyond the psychic entropy which is our normal state, when worries, desires and other kinds of chaotic thought chatter run through our minds. We experience an inner peace, and a sense of being more energized or alive than usual. Flow corresponds to the state that the traditional eight-limbed path of yoga refers to as dharana (concentration), which comes before the deeper spiritual states of dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (union with the divine).

In the Zone

But sport can sometimes enable us to reach these higher levels too. Once an athlete is locked into a state of flow, his or her absorption might intensify further, until it reaches a state which is similar to dhyana. At this point unusual things may happen.

Sports can also take us beyond the psychic level, and give us what I call awakening experiences — spiritual or mystical experiences of heightened awareness, connection and unity. of being in the zone. These are moments when suddenly everything clicks and they shift to a higher level of performance and become capable of astounding feats. Time moves slower than normal — this is often the main reason why the player is capable of such astounding feats, because he or she has more time to play with, more time to anticipate his opponents’ actions and to position himself. New age writer David Icke was once a professional soccer goalkeeper and he regularly experienced the zone. He recalls how during an important match, somebody fired a shot from close range, which looked unstoppable: “As the Barnet guy made contact everything went into slow motion for me. I moved across, watching the ball drifting slowly to my left and then I dived, lifting my right hand to turn it over the bar. All

ike the pomegranate, the fig is highly alkaline, packed with nutrients and numerous seeds. Different cultures have associated these seeds with life and fertility. In fact, in ancient Egypt, anyone pruning the fig tree was thought to be risking sterility. The fig is also the most mentioned fruit in the Bible. What makes the fig tree unusual is that it doesn’t flower. Unlike most trees that have leaves, grow flowers and then bear fruit, the fig tree first has figs, and then leaves, but it never has flowers. Certified sex educator and author Lou Paget describes the fig’s characteristics like something out of a romance novel: Its velvety soft surface and shape have caused some to associate figs with the hidden mysteries of men and women. Add to it the sweet multi-colored seeded interior and you have a fruit that can inspire the erotic merely by sight and evermore so by touch, scent and taste. A delicate and powerful aphrodisiac. And wouldn’t you know, out of all the leaves available, Adam and Eve chose fig leaves to cover their nakedness. Figs are sensual, yet practical. Fig-grower Lloyd Kreitzer of New Mexico became interested in this fruit when his body broke out in painful boils from inoculations he’d received upon entering the Peace Corps. He tried everything to heal them and eventually found that placing the seedy side of a fig (especially if it had been heated) onto the boil and wrapping the area in an Ace bandage gave him the greatest relief.

through fishing. He describes the effect of staring at a float for long periods: “All the nagging impulses that are normally distracting your mind dissolve. Once they have dissolved, you enter one of the orders of bliss. Your whole being rests lightly on your float, but not drowsily, very alert.” Why is it that sport has this seeming power to generate awakening experiences? Perhaps the best answer is to compare it to a more traditional method of inducing spiritual states — the practice of meditation. Something similar can happen when we play sports. The activity or game itself can have the same function as a mantra in meditation: it focuses our attention. We turn our attention off to everything outside it, and as a result the level of consciousness-energy that we give away drastically reduces. And if we focus our attention well, then our thought chatter subsides too. As a result, there is an intensification and purification of consciousness-energy inside us, which equates with states of dharana, dhyana and perhaps even samadhi. Thus sport can be a kind of spontaneous spiritual practice. Steve Taylor, author of Waking From Sleep, is a researcher in transpersonal psychology at Liverpool John Moores University. Visit www.

Kreitzer isn’t the first person to have picked up on this connection between figs and boils. Paul Pitchford, in his book Healing with Whole Foods, states that figs can be applied to skin discharges and boils. Maybe they help heal these conditions because they contain chemicals called psoralens that have been used for thousands of years to treat skin pigmentation diseases. Figs have a high mineral content, which can benefit the skin. You can make a tasty hors d’oeuvre with figs by serving them with melted goat cheese or tossing them into a fresh salad. Yuen Method Turns Body Switches On By Linnie Thomas

hat if the body was a high-tech biocomputer? A computer, at its basic level, works with a series of on/off switches. According to Dr. Kam Yuen, developer of the Yuen Method: Full Spectrum Healing, the body functions in the same manner, and its flow of energy can be gauged, tested and corrected. Yuen’s view of the human body differs from traditional Chinese medicine and energetic practices. In his book Instant Pain Elimination, he states that people have two responses to everything that happens in life: strong or weak (the switch is on or off). When we are appropriately strong to what is important to us, energy flows freely. When we are inappropriately weak, energy does not flow, and this accumulation of weaknesses can create imbalance, dysfunction or disease. Yuen teaches practitioners using muscle testing to find out if the client is strong or weak to a possible cause of pain, allergy or other physical or emotional issue. They then check the vertical midline of the body for a corresponding weak spot. If the client tests weak, a correction is made by mentally focusing attention at the weak spot along the spine, thus turning the “switch” back on. To be an effective practitioner, Yuen believes that the student needs no special abilities or psychic skills. He asks only to disregard limiting beliefs, keep an open mind and to remain neutral. Yuen is a 35th generation Shaolin grandmaster of Tai Chi Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He has degrees in chiropractics and structural engineering, extensive study in homeopathy and nutrition, and was a

526 CE, another Indian Buddhist monk came to China and was directed to the Shaolin temple. This particular monk, called Damo by the Chinese, was the third son of an Indian prince and well-versed in yoga and Indian fighting systems. He introduced a series of exercises to the monks and called it Kung Fu, which means hard work and perfection. Because the temple was located in a remote region, it was prone to attacks by outlaws. Damo taught the monks Indian fighting techniques to help defend the temple. In later years, more temples were built and the Kung Fu style of martial arts became well known as a defense skill. Being taught in Buddhist monasteries, the emphasis was on healing, philosophy and learning, even though the martial arts were a serious part of the curriculum for self-defense in dangerous times. Good health was considered imperative for the rigorous training and meditations required of a Shaolin monk. To be a priest, the student had to pass 18 tests: six physical, six mental and six spiritual. For four centuries, the most famous of the temples, O Mai Shan, meaning the Great White Mountain, became a library and medical university. Many of the healers were trained in healing techniques from Tibet. The library contained scrolls on healing from all over Asia. While war destroyed many of the temples, Shaolin healers became adept at healing broken bones and spinal injuries. Shaolin priests, following the Buddhist and Taoist practices of nonresistance, managed to pass knowledge down from parent to child. Shaolin is now enjoying a resurgence of popularity in China, helped by the American entertainment industry.

...people have two responses to everything that happens in life: strong or weak (the switch is on or off). When we are appropriately strong to what is important to us, energy flows freely. When we are inappropriately weak, energy does not flow, and this accumulation of weaknesses can create imbalance, dysfunction or disease.

Yuen Method Session

A Yuen Method session begins with an interview to find out what the client would like to heal. Based on this information, the practitioner intuitively asks a series of questions about the client’s physical and emotional health, and while doing so, may perform a series of muscle tests using the client’s outstretched arm in relation to the energetic functioning of his or her spine. Muscle testing is used for verification of the practitioner ’s intuition concerning weak points and is not always done. When the weakness is located, the practitioner focuses attention on that spot and with intention strengthens it. The practitioner then performs another muscle test to check if the problem has been resolved. If the problem has not, the practitioner looks for another point of weakness and repeats the process. Yuen Method practitioners test for many levels of “influence” on the person such as physical, emotional, karmic, financial, psychological, relationships and spiritual, making sure all levels of consciousness are congruent so pain may be eliminated and goals attained. The monitoring for weak points along the spine continues until the initial goal set by the practitioner and the client is attained. New Conneüion July/August 2011

STARSCOPE Birthing a New Reality in July and August By Emily Trinkaus

A dramatic solar eclipse on July 1 presents an opportunity to shed what you’ve outgrown and enter a new reality, one that may feel foreign and scary. As an extrapowerful new moon, a solar eclipse initiates a new cycle of growth that will develop Emily Trinkaus

over the next six months and beyond. In Cancer, this eclipse highlights themes of security, nurturing, home and family.

Helpfully, expansive Jupiter will form a harmonious trine with transformational Pluto, increasing support and stamina for initiating lasting change. Shedding attachments and commitments to what is out of alignment with your values is key to moving forward. Though in effect throughout the summer, the JupiterPluto influence will be strongest on July 7, and again in October and March.

Personal Sun and Ascendant Messages Aries (March 21 - April 19) Deep feelings demand your attention at the solar eclipse, calling you to shore up your emotional base of support. Home and family could be high-intensity arenas for change, necessitating negotiation in close relationships. Talents and resources that have been buried or untapped are now ready to emerge and offer support for your ongoing process of professional transformation.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Your powers of perception get rewired by the solar eclipse, waking you up to wider vistas of possibility. Mental expansion is a necessary prerequisite for the transformational leap of faith that wants to happen this summer — journeying to foreign territory, setting out on a spiritual vision quest, or sharing your vision with the world in a bigger and braver way.

Gemini (May 21 - June 21) July’s eclipse challenges you to increase your capacity for pleasure and prosperity, renewing your relationship with the material world. As you strengthen your connection with source, it becomes easier to shed the old programs and attachments that hold you back. Practice calming your busy mind and trust your body’s intuitive wisdom to guide you forward.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22) The solar eclipse in your sign signals a profound evolutionary leap, a new way of being in the world that catapults you into unfamiliar territory. Work, family and significant relationships may all require reevaluation and restructuring as a result. Reach out and connect with allies who share your values and vision to open up new sources of support.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) If you’ve been neglecting your selfcare, July’s eclipse could catalyze a crisis point. Not to worry — now is the ideal time to free yourself from self-sabotaging habits and transform your daily routines. Increased recognition of your creative talents inspires confidence and motivation for making necessary changes. And the steps you take to improve your health will support you in achieving success.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) A new dream for your future is emerging, and you may need to renovate your social circle to nurture this change of direction. A willingness to share your creative passion, power and authenticity attracts allies who can best support you in moving forward. The Virgo new moon on Aug. 28 is a potent time to reinvent yourself and take a bold step toward long-term goals.

Libra (September 23 - October 23) The solar eclipse signals a new direction in your career, asking New Conneüion July/August 2011

you to commit to what truly feeds you and to bring your inner and outer worlds into greater alignment. If you’ve been dissatisfied with your work, this could be a major turning point. Financial support from a partner or business investment can help you make the shift. Don’t be afraid to prioritize your own desires and ask for what you need.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22) Stepping outside your familiar environment supports you in restoring your faith, inspiration and optimism. At the solar eclipse, plant seeds for a physical, intellectual or spiritual adventure. You can make deep, lasting changes in your significant relationships by transforming your perception and speaking your truth from a place of vulnerability.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21) The solar eclipse alerts you to old fears and insecurities hiding out in your subconscious. Dive into the darkness and go on your own underworld journey, stripping away emotions and attachments that no longer serve you. Connecting with your core self provides a powerful foundation for building a more genuine and lasting sense of security.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Pluto’s ongoing journey through your sign indicates profound personal transformation, and July’s eclipse puts the pressure on significant relationships to adjust to the pace of change. The balance between independence and interdependence is highlighted, and honestly revealing your needs and feelings is the best approach. Shedding old defenses opens your capacity to enjoy the present.

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19) Commit to improving self-care routines at the solar eclipse. Avoid overly ambitious plans that are likely to lead to disappointment. Instead, identify one small step you can take to better nurture yourself in your daily life. A full moon in your sign on Aug. 13 signals the culmination of a personal project, putting you in the spotlight. Let your creativity and uniqueness shine.

ur planet is going through three highly significant changes when we consider how we are connected to Mother Earth. Look for changes in the Earth’s magnetic fields, plus increasing resonance and photon activity. The Earth’s magnetic field is becoming steadily weaker. Scientists surmise that this is a sign that the magnetic poles are likely to reverse in the near future, just as they have many times in the past. If you just consider the facts that our blood is composed of a high concentration of iron and that iron is influenced magnetically, this change in the Earth must also effect a change in us. It feels to me as if this reduction in magnetic strength is giving us the potential to think more expansively and freely. It is as if we are no longer being held in old thought patterns, but have the opportunity to think in new and exciting ways. Old paradigms are crumbling both in the scientific and spiritual worlds. Quantum physics is showing that science and spirituality have much common ground, whereas in the past they appeared to be poles apart. Secondly, the Earth’s speed of vibration, its resonance, is increasing. Everything in the universe vibrates with energy, and the Earth is no different. This vibration, known as the Schumann resonance, has been steadily increasing over the past 40 years. The planet is literally speeding up. Our hypothalamus and pituitary glands tune into this vibration, and within each of our cells there are receptors in the protein channels that pick up all the vibrations from outside. So we are intimately connected to this change in vibration, and more and more people are becoming intuitively aware of it as well. So many people that I meet talk about having the sense of time speeding up, and I believe this is a direct effect of this vibrational increase. I also believe that we have the potential to increase our own vibration, to achieve higher states of awareness and connectedness, and in doing so to gain access to deeper levels of our inner wisdom. The third significant change is that we are seeing a dramatic increase in photon activity, both in our sun and from outside our solar system. Photons are subatomic particles of light, so this means that there is a dramatic increase in the light available within our solar system and on our planet.

We are about to fully enter what is called the photon belt, which is a ring of photons. Just as our planet revolves around a star, the sun, our solar system also revolves

around a great star. This great circuit takes approximately 26,000 years and is elliptical, meaning that at certain times we are a relatively long way away from our great star and at other times quite close. If you divide this orbit into 12 equal segments as a means of marking the passage of time and assign the signs of the zodiac to each twelfth, the times when we are closest to our great star correspond to the times of Leo and Aquarius. This is what is meant by the Age of Aquarius. These times are also when we pass through the photon belt. In 2012 we will fully enter it for the first time in 11,000 years, but we are already feeling its influence. Entering the photon belt marks the dawn of a new era lasting approximately 2,100 years when we are bathed in a much greater number of photons. In the past, times of high photon activity have coincided with great leaps forward in our thinking and development, and we are now living in another time of dramatic progress and development, both intellectually and spiritually. One only needs to look at the changes that have taken place since the emergence of the microchip to realize this. The challenge for us is to match the changes occurring in the macrocosm within our own microcosm. We need to have our vehicle in a state of heightened receptiveness in order to take full advantage of these macrocosmic shifts. We need to be open in our cells and in our mind. Conscious Gardening By Michael J. Roads

here are many gardeners in the world, but few are outstanding. What is it that makes one particular gardener stand out from so many others? It’s the relationship that gardener has with the garden. Loving the garden, loving the land, loving the plants — really loving nature —creates a conscious relationship where the garden is your meeting place with nature. But something extra is required. Nature lives in the eternal moment. Plants are not thinking about us and their place in the world — they are simply growing and living in the moment. Unfortunately, we can think our way out of the moment, but we can’t think our way into it. While all natural life is consciously in the moment, humanity is so busy thinking that we live subconsciously, rarely conscious of being in the moment. We live subconsciously, nature lives consciously. You can’t subconsciously love nature. In fact, you can’t subconsciously love. Love requires full consciousness. You can’t be a subconscious gardener, and love the garden. As a gardener, you may quarrel with your spouse, but never with the garden. For this type of gardener, the garden is a retreat, a refuge, a shelter from the stormy blasts. When I was a young teenager in England, I met a lady in her 90s. She showed me her garden. It was one small garden in the middle of a row of terraced houses, each garden divided from the others by a very high brick wall. The sunlight struggled to find her garden, but for most of the year it was filled with an abundance of flowering plants. I was a keen gardener, and I knew there was not enough sun to get those plants into flower. But as I watched her, feeling the love she felt for her garden, I realized that she was the sun in her garden. I learned that when you love the garden and its plants, as she did, you can throw the rule book away. She was the first outstanding gardener I ever met. I never forgot her — or what she taught me.

One of the great lessons I have consciously learned from nature in a garden is about being-with while doing-to. We get so busy, doing, doing, doing — all while thinking about our day. Doing-to, but not being-with. If you are pulling weeds, be aware of what you are doing — beingwith, you gradually become conscious of a greater connection with nature. Conscious gardening means that you are learning to be conscious in life, and your teacher is nature. The garden is the meeting place, you are the student. Nature offers you the most wondrous relationship possible, taking you beyond the mundane and into the magnificent. Some people talk of the spirit of nature — this is found as a higher energy in the gardens of the true garden lovers. These are the “green thumb” people. Their

gardens may be huge and beautiful, or a sprawl of seemingly untidy plants, but energy-wise they have the X-factor. Equally, a garden may be tiny, but the relationship with the garden can be huge. When you can follow the intuitive feelings you have as a gardener, placing plants

in the ground where they want to grow, you will be able to develop that precious nature/human relationship to its full potential. This is when you become aware of the clear parallels between life and the garden. Pruning old, sprawling, thorny growth from the roses equates as removing the tangle of prickly attitudes we have developed, hindering our growth. If we are conscious while we clear away unwanted weeds from the garden, allowing our plants the room to grow, we can also release the weeds of our old thinking habits, giving space for the expansion and growth of our own potential. Will Italian Invention Replace Dirty Fuels? By Jeane Manning

non-polluting source of carbon-free power for the world may evolve from a fist-sized energy device being tested at an Italian university. The Energy Catalyzer (E-Cat) holds promise as a cheap, clean way to generate power. Its co-inventors plan to install the technology in a power plant in Greece this fall. Consuming only tiny amounts of powdered nickel and hydrogen, 300 of the E-Cat modules combined are expected to produce a million watts of heat. The heat would create steam, powering a turbine to generate electricity. Smaller units are said to have heated an industrial building for months. Independent scientists have witnessed the device producing significantly more power than the input. The chairman of the Swedish Skeptics Society and the president of Sweden’s Royal Academy of Science tested it and admitted that producing 25 kilowatt/hours in a 50 centimeter squared container can’t be explained by chemistry. If it were burning fuel, that output requires three liters of oil for fuel. Unlike hot fusion, no dangerous radiation is measured. The chief scientist at NASA’s

A series on alternative sources of energy that can transform how we power the world. Langley Research Center recently praised the nonpolluting breakthrough. The science behind the invention is controversial, using what may be called cold fusion or low energy nuclear reactions. Nuclear simply refers to a nucleus — a grouping of protons and neutrons in the center of an atom. Atom-splitting is called nuclear fission, which releases deadly radioactive fragments. In an opposite process, fusion, nuclei fuse to become one nucleus while also releasing energy. Physicists who build particle accelerators try to mimic what they believe happens in the sun — tremendous heat and pressure causing hot fusion. It is less harmful than fission, but does contaminate reactors. Hot fusion research has cost billions of dollars without providing solid results.

In 1989 two electrochemists announced room-temperature fusion using ordinary devices putting out excess heat energy with no harmful radiation. Accepted physics says that’s impossible. The label cold fusion stuck to this type of experiment. Many physicists tried to replicate it but failed. After a Department of Energy panel recommended against funding cold fusion, science media began calling it junk science. Despite ridicule, other scientists persisted and achieved an excess-heat result from a variety of experiments. A new theory says that what they’re doing is creating nuclear reactions that are neither fission nor fusion. Perhaps proving it’s possible, the E-Cat is said to release enough heat to do useful work. Who are the inventors creating this buzz? The academic partner is Sergio Focardi, a professor from the University of Bologna. He’s refining the E-Cat while Andrea Rossi is in Florida dealing with manufacturing and business details. Focardi had been seeking nickel-hydrogen fusion since 1994. Rossi in turn found a catalyst that’s the secret ingredient. Nickel is plentiful and cheap — so is hydrogen in the tiny amounts used in their invention. An American company planning to commercialize E-Cat was co-founded by Robert Gentile, a former assistant secretary of energy for fossil energy at the Department of Energy.

Wild Feminine: Finding Power, Spirit & Joy in the Female Body, Tami Lynn Kent, Atria Books/Beyond Words, 2011, $16.99

Wild Feminine is both a physical health book — based on Tami Lynn Kent’s background in physical medicine — and a guide to feminine spirituality that teaches women how to restore a sense of the sacred within the core of her body. You’ll see the female body in a new light:

This beautifully illustrated deck of 44 cards explores the 12 archangels of Atlantis. According to author Stewart Pearce, Atlantis was a civilization that existed between 250,000 and 15,000 B.C., and during this time the archangels lovingly served the people of Atlantis. There were 12 crystal skulls housed in temples that amplified the intergalactic energies, and it was through these skulls that the angels worked with the people of Atlantis teaching them about love and acceptance, and the Hall of Records (known as the Akasha). Designed to answer questions regarding your health, finances, career, and relationships, the Oracle cards offer answers based on balance, grace, inspiration, compassion, romance, ecstasy, and surrender. Each card represents an aspect of the archangels that can help you understand a situation and bring peace to your life. Or just draw a card each day for meditation purposes.

and death. Women are uniquely linked to the universe in a powerful CHOICE way — growing and welcoming new life into the world. Just as the moon cycles through waxing and waning, women also cycle through fullness and emptiness, preparing monthly to support new life. Kent also uses humor to explore the ovaries, and how these nests for life also provide creative energy in their roles as the muse and the cowgirl. Insightful, moving and full of creative ideas, Wild Feminine helps women regain their power off the pedestal. — Vicky Thompson

TWIDDERS: Exploration of the TimeLost Continuum and Travel, Anita Holmes, Ozark Mountain Publishing, 2011, $15

You may be wondering what or who is a TWIDDER? Author Anita Holmes has an office file labeled TWIDDERS, which is an acronym for what’s inside the file: time travel, time storms, time/warp/displacement and a pinch of slip. An entertaining read, the book is filled with many real life stories, examples of time warps, people disappearing and then reappearing, buildings disintegrating before your eyes, slips in time where people and places from the past could be seen and even interacted with, and other fascinating stories. If we

do live in one of many multiple universes and time is just an illusion, then maybe in another reality Elvis never died and perhaps it’s possible to interact with him. We know so little about the relationship to time travel, TWIDDERS opens your eyes to other possibilities of traveling through wormholes, revisiting a moment from our documented history or even visiting another universe. — Jelina Vance

The course takes you on a journey to freedom in 21 lessons. You delve into the core of the matter and get to the subconscious to help you make that pivotal shift from fear to real freedom and love. The real you is a being of light and therefore has no material density. As you align more and more with this truth of your being, this higher reality will permeate all aspects of your life. The more you identify with the light of your being, the lighter you will feel.” Be prepared for amazing wisdom, insight and perhaps even your own weight loss miracle. — Annette Epifano

A Sound Sleep: Guided Meditations with Relaxing Music & Nature Sounds (CD), Dudley and Dean Evenson, Soundings of the Planet, 2011, $16.99

long CD that is designed to help listeners fall asleep. The CD’s two tracks both have relaxing music and nature sounds. Picture being at the beach and being lulled by the rhythmic waves, or being in a forest with songbirds. Add calming harp and flute music. And then, in the first track, Dudley’s soothing voice guides listeners into deep relaxation, encouraging us to let go of the thoughts and chatter in our minds that interfere with sleep. All this truly will help insomniacs drift off to sleep. The second track just has the music and nature sounds—or so we think. The Evensons have cleverly added the guided meditations subliminally. This is so listeners can put the CD on repeat to encourage sleeping all night long. — Alice R. Berntson

New Conneüion July/August 2011

CommUNITY, from page 1 particular need or niche, but I also think that there are some important elements that have been missing. First of all, most New Thought churches do a good job inspiring people’s minds or intellects. What’s sometimes missing is inspiration for the heart and soul. That’s where ritual comes in. I was raised in the Catholic church, which is obviously really big into ritual. On the other hand, it never changes and is the same every week. What would happen if people had the chance to come to a community that began by inspiring the mind, but then drew upon heart opening rituals and ceremonies from many spiritual traditions in a creative, open way? I think a community like that would serve the spiritual needs of Portland in an interesting, new way.” Until recently James’ schedule prevented him from being grounded enough to begin such an endeavor. He has been one of the most popular Hay House authors for more than 18 years, which has led to an international ministry performing concerts, giving lectures and retreats, and speaking at nearly every top conference in the world. When asked why he’s giving up life on the road, his answer was unexpected. “I’m definitely going to be slowing down, not traveling as much,” he said. “I’m doing it because I need to. I feel so lucky to have led this life, but when you’re always on the road it’s hard to do the deep work, both with others and personally. Starting this community means that I can work with a group of committed people every week who are serious about their spirituality. Of course, the work I’ve done around the world has given me a unique perspective, and I’ll bring that perspective with me. I’ve been thinking about this for years, but only now has everything aligned so I can begin.” Anakha Coman, a local spiritual teacher and the co-author of Twyman’s book The Proof, will be cofacilitating the services. In the book, Twyman and Coman present a 40-day program for increasing the experience of oneness in a person’s life. The book inspired a worldwide movement with

nearly ten thousand people following the lessons at the same time, then reporting their experiences through surveys, conferences and the Internet. “Anakha has had her finger on the spiritual pulse of Portland for many years,” Twyman says. “She’s one of the most profound spiritual leaders I’ve ever worked with, and it was an easy decision to ask her to join me in establishing the Beloved CommUNITY here. The insight she brought to the book we wrote together was monumental. I couldn’t have done it without her. I feel the same way about this new project. I wouldn’t want to do it without her because I know what she brings to the table. She’ll bring a depth of experience that will be hard to imagine or match. I also knew that this wasn’t just about James Twyman coming to town and holding court. This is about all of us, and everyone will have an important role to play. I’m thrilled that Anakha will be with me in this. “The Beloved CommUNITY is the name of the organization I started around 12 years ago,” he continues. “There are thousands of people around the world who have taken various workshops and trainings, and we’ve ordained more than 600 hundred ministers through the Seminary of Spiritual Peacemaking. We also have nearly 30 services happening every week around the world, but this is the only one that I’ll be personally leading. I have the feeling that this is going to expand in ways I can’t even imagine right now.” Which leads to the biggest question: Where do you see this going? “There’s no way for me to know what will happen, but I have the feeling it’s going to end up being a rich part of the spiritual landscape here in Portland. I love living here and I know I’m going to love building this community. We’re going to do things that no other congregation has ever done before. The idea is to balance the traditional with an openness that feeds people in a very deep way. If we can do that, then this will be an example for spiritual communities around the world. But it’ll begin here in Portland. I really can’t wait.”

503-206-8027 We believe that the universe is spiritual and has intelligence, purpose, beauty, and order. Our beliefs are in harmony with all the world’s great spiritual teachings, and we honor all paths to God. Whether we call it God, Spirit, Energy, or Universal Intelligence, we are ever conscious that all people, places, and things emanate from this Universal Intelligence that is within us and all around us.
