“LET’S GO BACKWARDS TOGETHER”

When Harry Clasper (the man The Blaydon Races was written for) died in 1870, more than 130,000 people lined the streets of Newcastle to pay their final respects. “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” As the Bennet sisters haplessly search for love in Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy, it is Mr Darcy who unwittingly finds his match.

A funny and poignant tribute about the life and times of Harry Clasper, the greatest ever North East sportsman.

HANSEL AND GRETEL ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK

‘AN EXOTIC HYBRID OF CONTEMPORARY, CLASSICAL AND C ARIBBEAN STYLES’ The Guardian

Cuba’s flagship contemporary dance company is back in Newcastle. A pungent blend of Afro Caribbean rhythms, jazzy American modernism and inflections from European ballet, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba hybrid, hothouse style has been evoking the sensual heart of Cuban spirit for over 50 years.

This electrifying new show sees the company team up with leading choreographers, including Amsterdam-based Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, the UK’s Theo Clinkard (whose credits include the company’s very own Cuban wunderkind George Céspedes).

Perhaps the most popular operatic fairy tale of them all, this is also one of the darkest. From a poor home in which hunger is an everpresent threat, brother and sister escape to the world of the forest. They encounter supernatural forces such as the Sandman, the Dew Fairy and, most frightening of all, the Witch. The music magically evokes the contrasting worlds of the story as this contemporary take on a classic story reveals the perils of growing up. NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

(LA CENERENTOLA) GIOACHINO ROSSINI

A much-loved fairy tale but not quite as you know it. Cinderella scrubs the floor of a dance school and dreams of a better life. A prince arrives seeking a companion and so this sparkling romcom is set in motion... An evening of pure magic is in store, uniting the fun, fire and brilliance of Rossini’s music with a fresh and witty production. Sung in Italian with English titles Running time: 2hrs 30mins Recommended age 7+ Free pre-show talks – Thu 2 Mar 6pm & Sat 4 Mar 1pm. Advance booking essential.

THE SNOW MAIDEN The Snow Maiden is warm and beautiful but she hides a tragic secret, her heart is made of ice. If warmed by human love, her heart will melt and she will die. Enchanted by the shepherd boy Lel, she yearns to experience life with humans. Her parents relent, with tragic consequences... A gorgeous and lyrical evocation of the natural world, this is a delightfully colourful, folk-inspired opera based on a Russian fairy tale.
