2019 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

ROUND 8

MATT'S MESSAGE ceomatt harris Last weekend?s results proved a bonanza for the three coalfields club with Maitland, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri all securing important victories and in-turn demonstrating how close the 2019 season will be. The Pickers overcome Central Newcastle after trailing at halftime while Kurri turned in a strong second half to secure an 18 point win over Lakes United. In the upset of the season, so far, Cessnock edged out the previously undefeated Rosellas in a tight, physical battle at Cessnock Sportsground. The final game saw South Newcastle reverse the round 2 result by securing an 8 point win over Macquarie. After 7 rounds the Rosellas still lead the competition on 10 points with Souths, Maitland and Kurri two points behind on 8. Cessnock round out the top five on 6 points. West Newcastle, South Newcastle, Lakes United and Cessnock all have a game in hand due to a couple of round 6 washouts. This week?s fixtures see Central Newcastle hosting Macquarie and with both sides sitting one win outside the five it shapes as an important game for both clubs. The second Saturday game is Kurri v Cessnock in what is traditionally a fierce match-up. Sunday?s games have Maitland travelling to Harker Oval to battle West Newcastle and Lakes United at home against South Newcastle. Saturday?s coalfields clash between Kurri and Cessnock will be the BarTV live-stream feature game and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).?In 2019 Business Plaza Cup live-scores are also available via the NSWRL website (https://www.nswrl.com.au/draw/?competition=151).

Our Butcher birds again got the win last week against Maitland last Sunday, keep up the good work girls Our U19 beat an enthusiastic and well coached Maitland side in a close game Open grade and reserves both put in gallant efforts but the Pumpkin pickers got the 2 points in both games, stick with it boys and train hard. The wins will come! With 3 players ruled out on Friday night in 1st Grade it made the job against Maitland even harder, our boys again were competitive but Maitland go the win with 2 late tries with Ethan Campbell making his 1st grade debut for Central. NELSON BAY SHARKS The Sharks continue to turn up against the top 4 teams a little overawed and continued to turn the ball over in poor field position allowing Souths to run in 4 first half tries at Merewether in slippery conditions, during the break Coach Blaine had to remind them that if they completed their sets they would trouble the Lions. The 2nd half saw a great improvement with the Sharks completing the majority of their sets making a number of line breaks, with Emma Cram, Hayley Dufour and Haley Dews starting to dominate, a nice mid field run by Reagan McIlwain was supported by Emma Cram running away to score under the post and converted her own try to reduce the margin to 18-6 until with the siren sounding, Souths picked up a loose ball to score, the final score 24-6. The Sharks host Maitland at Salamander next Saturday kick off 10am Go the Sharks

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS 1st Gr ade ? Fir est or m An inconsistent first half allowed neither side to build any ascendancy. As the second half commenced Kurri had a sick sense of Deja vu, Nash Birch comes of the left foot to score again after halftime. Lakes skip out to lead as was the case two weeks prior. Fortunately for Kurri there next stanza they were able to remain composed and play consistent football. Building pressure with effective sets they were able to take advantage at the back end of the half. Running out eventual winners 28-10. Brock Gilmour has a tidy game in the middle supported by Jarred Anderson whose robust carries laid the platform for the backs to get their game on. 2n d Gr ade ? Fir est or m An excellent team effort with high levels of energy for the whole game, the forwards laid the platform with strong carries and excellent defence. The Team was well steered around by Jackson Cluff who kicking game was on song with building pressure and creating try scoring opportunities. Players player and Coaches award went to Ben Edwards. Try Scorers - JHancock x3, B Edwards, Z Pryor, D McFayden, C Richardson, C Nugent and B Brown with B Mendyk kicking 6 from 9. Gr ade ? Heddon Gr et a Hot el Open grade suffered their first big loss of the season to Lakes which was a shame at home on Old Boys day. They struggled to get into the game with poor ball handling in good field position, compounding these with penalties and players sin binned. Hoping to take plenty of lessons from the loss and move forward and will be looking for improvements this week. Players Player was Chris Farrell and Coaches award went to Bumper Peterkin. 19?s - M it ch ell?s Ph ysiot h er apy The U19?s were really in the game despite a set piece play not going their way with the try being disallowed and a player being sent to the bin and tilting the game. However, the boys didn?t lay down and kept fighting with good football. The Lake?s siezed their opportunities and took the game away. A stand out from the match was Danny Williams who played big minutes for a front rower got metres and held onto possession. LLT - Heddon Gr et a Hot el The ladies were unfortunately unable to back up their strong performance from last weeks game with a disappointing 14-4 loss. After a strong start with a try to Sharneakia Tui Nikora the Ladies conceded the next 14 points due to ill discipline and errors. Coaches award Leanne Polglase Players Player Emma Martin.

M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: Fir st Gr ade: In terrible conditions at Townson Oval the Scorpions first grade side put in one of their best defensive games of the season to go down narrowly 8-0 with only 1 try in the game coming from a bomb to South Newcastle. If the Scorpions play like that from here on there is no reason why they can?t register more wins. Best for the Scorpions were Jordan Noble, Adam Grew and Royce Geoffrey. Reser ve Gr ade: The Reserve Grade also went down narrowly 10-8 with both sides scoring 2 tries. Unfortunately for the Scorpions one conversion was given a no goal after one official ruled it a goal and the other no goal and the second conversion hit the upright. The side deserved at least a point out of the game against the league front runners. Best for the Scorpions were Alek Hall, Pat Sharkey and Kyle Tracy. Open Gr ade: Easily the win of the season for the club, the Scorpions getting up 10-8 with a much depleted side due to injuries in the higher grades and player unavailability due to long weekend commitments. A fantastic defensive display rarely seen in Open Grade football. Best in a great team effort were Jake Waters, Luke Melross and Graham Morris. Un der 19s: Unfortunately the side could not replicate their great form from the previous week against Maitland and went down to South Newcastle. Too many errors gifted the opposition the ball in attacking positions which made it difficult. Best for the Scorpions were Daniel Rumbel, Jackson Greenwood, Aaron Brydon. Ladies Leagu e Tag: Had the bye. A big thankyou to all the players who backed up last weekend, showing great club spirit.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS

Last Saturday saw us make the trip back up to Kurri for the second time in 3 weeks and the day saw the results reversed from the previous encounter for majority of the games. The ladies started off our day on a good note after a solid 20-4 win. It was a tough win as they had narrow 6-4 at halftime after conceding the first try. The girls stuck to their game plan and didn?t take a backward step to grind out a really good win. The 19?s continued their good start to the season with a 24-4 win over the Bulldogs pups. The boys were missing some key players giving an opportunity for others to stand up. Kurri were spirited throughout the whole game but Lakes were too strong in a comfortable victory. Open Grade were behind the eight ball from the start by only able to field 8 fresh players due to work commitments and injuries. We have to give a huge thank you to the 19?s boys for backing up, especially the five who had to start in this game after playing a full game of 19?s. It is something that the boys don?t baulk at, they do what is needed from the club so thanks again gents. Opens were able to get the better of Kurri this week with a strong 20-0 win over a side that is always tough through the middle. Our you ng side took it to the older pack by shutting them out defensively and capatalising on opportunities by scoring

some fantastic team tries along the way. Our Reserve Grade team suffered a 48-12 loss to a Kurri side that were primed to reverse the loss the suffered to our boys two weeks ago. It?s fair to say we missed the jump against a physical side and hopefully some valuable lessons learnt in making sure we turn up ready to do the tough stuff every week. First Grade had a tough 28-10 loss, which has disappointed the playing group within. We could not have started any better by dominating the first 30 minutes with a 6-0 lead. We missed some opportunities while in good field position before some unforced errors brought Kurri back into the contest as the teams went into the break at 6 points each. The second half continued with more errors, which would eventually put too much pressure on our defence. The positives are that there was no lack of effort from the group with the boys determined to continue to work hard for each other. This Sunday we are back God?s country at Cahill Oval to take on South Newcastle in what should see a tough contest in all 5 grades. Lakes have our ?Day at the Races?on 29th June, there are limited seats left so if anyone is interested in attending or sponsoring a race see all the details on our Facebook page.

WESTERN SUBURBS ROSELLAS Last Saturday we travelled up to the Cessnock Sportsground to play the Cessnock Goannas on a very cold day. The Wests Rosellas came away with 4 wins form 5 games going down for the first time in first grade in a good afternoon for footy. This Sunday we welcome the Maitland Pickers to Harker Oval with the 19?s, Open Grade, Reserve Grade and First grade playing while the Ladies League Tag have a bye. Ladies League Tag: Wests 10 defeated Cessnock 6. Close game with plenty of action. Tries: Emily Coppins & Jacqui Dudgeon. Goal: Kristy Houghton. 19?s: Wests 32 defeated Cessnock 6. A good team effort the boys came away with a good win. Tries: Taylor Fiu, Max Buderus, Patrick Achurch, Jacob Payne, John Afu and Charlton Lee. Goals: Max Buderus (4). Open Grade: Wests 30 defeated Cessnock 0. In a rather one-sided game, the boys came away with a great win. Tries: Luke Poolman, Aaron Simon (3), Matthew Archer and Clint Davies. Goals: Aaron Simon (2). Reserve Grade: Wests 32 defeated Cessnock 28. In a tough game ending with a try the difference the Rosellas got the points on the day. Tries: Paul Dengate (2), Jordan Worboys, Felly McHughes, Michael Hendry and Jesse Andrews. Goals: Michael Hendry (4). First Grade: Wests 8 defeated by Cessnock 13. The first loss for the Rosellas but they will bounce back next week I?m sure. Tries: Chad O?Donnell. Goals: Sam McKenna (2). Next Sunday we host The Lakes United at Harker Oval playing all 5 games. We will play the washed-out game against Souths on Sunday 11th August at Harker Oval. GO ROSELLAS GO:
