2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

ROUND 11

MATT'S MESSAGE

ceomatt harris

Congratulations to all Ladies League Tag teams that participated in the Women in League round held at Maitland Sportsground last Sunday. All three games were extremely competitive and showcased the high level of skills within the women?s game. Newcastle RL is excited about expanding this initiative in the years to come. Round 10 Business Plaza Cup results saw West Newcastle secure an important win against competition leaders Lakes United, Maitland continue their winning run against South Newcastle, Kurri Kurri topple Cessnock, and Macquarie and Central Newcastle split the points with a 22 all draw. With six rounds left to play we now have a three way tie with Lakes United, Maitland and West Newcastle all on 12 points at the top of a congested leader board. Even last placed Cessnock are within striking distance of a semi-final spot. This week?s matches have Macquarie up against Maitland at Peacock Field, West Newcastle hosting South Newcastle, Lakes United v Kurri Kurri at Cahill Oval, and Central Newcastle at home against Cessnock. All very important matches for each team. The Lakes v Kurri game will be the BarTV feature match and can be viewed on our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). Round 11 is also the second of our Futures Rounds with all u19 games to be played directly prior to the Business Plaza Cup fixtures. A great opportunity to view the up and coming stars within the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League competition. A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

Matt Harris Chief Executive Officer Newcastle Rugby League.

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS The women in league round gave the opportunity for the all LLT games to be played at one venue, with the Kurri Kurri team taking on the Cessnock side. With Coach Gilmour and Linnane?s side facing adversity they put in a spirited performance to come away with the win. A much deserved win for a team that works hard at their game, congratulations keep up the good work.

Further to this the previous day at Kurri Kurri sportsground saw the under 19?s get the day off to a great start, following on from this the third grade side got back to their winning ways with a comprehensive victory. The reserve grade game was a high quality game that ebbed and flowed with the Bulldogs running out eventual winners. Although the result pleased coach Leggett no doubt the ebb and flow nature of the game would have produced a few pensive moments.

After continually working hard the team has started to find some consistency in their performances and the win was just reward for their efforts.

A special mention to Jason Madden who visited us in the sheds after the game, supporting those who face adversity has always been a strong point of the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs and Saturday was no different. Jason who has endured a tough time came into the sheds after the game and sang the team song with the first grade squad, afterwards the players posed for photos with Jason. The day represented a significant one in the clubs history, it was the first time that the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs had worn an Aboriginal themed jumper. Without hesitation Jade Porter gave his jumper to Jason, such a thoughtful selfless act, Jason left with a huge smile a day he will never forget.

To reach the 150 grade game milestone takes a lot of commitment, congratulations to Ben Edwards a passionate Bulldog who thrives on competing and wearing the red, blue and white. This weekend against Lakes Ben reaches 150 grade games. Furthermore there is no doubt his proud family will be in attendance, to help him celebrate his milestone game passionate supporters who love the club. Get along to Cahill oval this Sunday and support the mighty Kurri Kurri Bulldogs and help Ben celebrate his 150th game.

M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: The Scorpions did the Houdini trick last weekend and scored two late tries to come away with a 22-22 draw with Central in the First Grade game. The last Scorpions try was scored with only seconds remaining just inside the touchline by winger Malik Deyalou, but unfortunately the conversion attempt from Scott Briggs just grazed the outside of the upright. That point could very well prove vital for the Scorpions at the end of the season as with 6 games remaining the Scorpions are 2 points behind Central and 3 points behind South Newcastle in 5thand 4thspots on the ladder emphasising the importance of this week?s game against Maitland at Peacock Field and the following week against South Newcastle at Townsend Oval. Congratulations to Chris McGrath who played his first 1stgrade game and showed everyone that he was ready for the jump up in grade after some outstanding performances in Reserve Grade. Unfortunately the Reserve Grade and the Open Grade had very close losses against very strong Central sides and the loss by the Open Grade has now made it very difficult for them to make the semi finals for 2018. Unfortunately the Open Grade were behind 22-0 after only 20 minutes but managed to get back to only being behind by 4 points late in the game before Central scored the winning try with no time left on the clock. The performance of the day went to the Scorpions under 19s who came away with an emphatic 36-16 win against 2ndplaced Central. The Scorpions went into the game with only 15 players with 4 of the Under 19s having to play Reserve Grade due to the mounting injury toll in the club. Central scored early on to take a 6-0 lead but from then on it was all the Scorpions with Kendyl Fahey, Floyde Bonar and Jack Buckton outstanding for the Scorpions. Just a reminder to all Scorpions supporters that tickets are still available in the 300 club with a first prize of $10,000 with the draw taking place at Toronto Workers Club on Saturday 4 August at 3.00pm. Food and drinks will be provided to 300 club ticket holders.

M AITLAND PICKERS Round 10 saw the Maitland Pickers take on south Newcastle at home on Saturday than return on Sunday to Host the LLT teams for women in League Round, and what an excellent weekend of footy it was. Thank you to all the women behind the scenes who allow us to partake in the greatest game of all every week with your tireless efforts and endless support. Ladies Leagu e Tag The ladies started very well to lead 10 nil over last year 's premiers but errors and missed tags cost us the win. Player ?s player this week was 'Miss consistency?Brittany Morrison with a great performance in both attack and defence. Brittany Carroll was the coaches?award, in her first year of league tag Britt showcased her versatility taking on the fullback role for the first time and doing a great job in windy conditions. We're looking forward to the back end of the season and playing semi-final footy. Un der 19's After a week full of disruptions and being short on numbers due to holidays the 19's showed there maturity and resilience with a dominate display beating souths 42-10 . The Players player award went to Ben McIlwraith and Coaches award was Junior Tuivati. Open Gr ade it was a disappointing result for open grade this week, Souths were just too good for our pickers & the stronger team got the win on the day. A weak defensive line let them down in the end, leaving the boys with very little possession and having to defend nearly every set back to back. The loss can be attributed to low attendance at training ?it?s just not good enough at this time of year ?, coach Jye Delaney says : ?it?s embarrassing to lose like that at home in front of old boys and supporters but what can you do? - you can?t practice anything with 6 blokes at training?. We hope the boys can turn it around this week with a few strong key players returning from injury and work commitments, and push towards sitting in a better place for the back end of the season. Reser ve Gr ade Down 16 to 4 at half time it was a massive effort by all the players to fight back and come away with the win. Players Player was Gary Anderson and Ben Ireland Was voted Coaches award. Fir st Gr ade A great performance from 1st grade with some experienced players missing it was a very important game for us. Souths have been the form team and we needed to be very good to match them. I think it was our best win of the season and puts us in a good place for the back end of the season. Congratulations to Cody Clulow and Jeremy Gibson who both made their first grade Debut with outstanding performances on the park. Shay Padberg earnt the Players Player award and Coaches Award went to Adam Clydsdale. This week the Boys will take on the Macquarie Scorpions at Peacock Field on Saturday for Futures Round while the girls enjoy a week off. Note changes to Game times this week are: Open gr ade- 11:00, Reser ve gr ade - 12:15, U 19?s - 1:45, Fir st Gr ade ? 3:00. We hope to see lots of black and white in the crowd cheering on the Mighty Pickers!!

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS

On Saturday our four men?s teams travelled to Harker Oval to take on West Newcastle, while our girls travelled to Maitland Sports Ground on Sunday in the stand alone round for Ladies League Tag. The Ladies League Tag was a very close encounter, with the girls never giving up but unfortunately going down 8-nil to a very classy Wests outfit. Our U19?s gave it all they had putting in a massive effort with lack of numbers due to injuries, but unfortunately going down 32-12. A big thank you to our two U17?s players who did not look out of place. Third Grade made it 6 in a row now, holding on to a 10-8 victory with their never give up attitude and willingness to work for each other until the end. Next up Reserve Grade where it just wasn?t our day. With two players pulling out on game day and being up against a very strong wests team, we went down 42-22. The boy?s effort was there and hopefully a few wins are just around the corner. First Grade, as always wests Newcastle are the benchmark of the comp. Our boys went end to end with them for 50 minutes, but the end result didn?t go our way with wests running away winners 28-22. This week we move on to our first of three home games in a row, so please spread the word and hopefully we get some great crowds at Cahill oval and we come away with a few more victories. As always, everyone is welcome back to Jewells Tavern for the after match presentation. Seagu ll Hist or y - Rou n d 11 v Ku r r i at Cah ill Oval The coalfield clubs dominated the 1957 NRL competition with Kurri contesting the grand final against Maitland after knocking Cessnock out in their semi. Lakes were not strong this year but did produce the shock of the season in the second last round, defeating the Bulldogs 32-4 at Cahill Oval. This result will be remembered for the exploits of legendary winger Ivan Wolfe who scored six of the Seagulls eight tries including five in the last half hour.

WEST NEWCASTLE ROSELLAS The West family are saddened by the passing this week of one of our home-grown greats, Geoff (TAG) Spruce. Geoff was selected as fullback in our Team of the Century. He was small in stature with a very big heart. May he rest in peace. West s LLT.Our ladies came up with a good win over their Lakes opponents with an 8 to 0 win, which keeps them in the race to the semi-finals. Keep playing the way you did and you will be there. Well done. Tries to Taylah Gray and Jacqui Dudgeon. Aw ar ds:Players Player, TBA; Coaches Award, TBA; Directors Award, Corie Hodges. U 19?s.Our young men maintained their unbeaten record with a very good win over Lakes 32 to 12. The way our players manage to pass the ball before a tackle is complete is a credit to each of you, and your coach. Keep playing the way you play, as it is exciting to watch. Tries to Nathan O?Brien; Liam Marshall; Matt Nord; Jacob Payne; Dyllan Parlane and Jessie Andrews. Goals to Sam McKenna (3) and Nick Haggerty. Aw ar ds:Players Player, Sam McKenna; Coaches, Nathan O?Brien and Directors went to Sam McKenna. Open Gr ade.Had another hard game and played really well in the first half leading 8 to 4 at the brake. However, our players didn?t score in the second half, going down 8 to 10. Your Wests fans want to see you there at the end of the season and will be urging you on against Souths. Joshua Berwick scored two good tries. Aw ar ds:Players Player, Michael Finucane; Coaches, Nathan O?Brien and Directors to Sam Jobbins. West s Reser ve Gr ade.The first half was a real arm wrestle with players going to the sheds at 12 all. However, in the second half your Premiers Title came out, playing great rugby league with the final score being 42 to 22 over a good Lakes side. Tries to Joey Griffiths (2); Luke Poolman; Paul Dengate; Felly McHughes; Michael Hendry and Clint Davies. Seven goals to Michael Hendry. Aw ar ds:Players Player, Felly McHughes; Coaches, Joey Griffiths and Directors to Michael Hendry. West s Fir st Gr ade.Another top-of-the-table clash against Lakes, and what a game it was. The first half was nearly a replay of last Sunday against Central with both teams going to the sheds at the halfway mark 12 all. However, in the second half our players put into action what coach Matt Lantry asked of them, with a magnificent win 28 to 22. Your Wests fans are so proud of the effort each of you put in. We will be there for you again this Saturday against Souths. Tries to Jordan Worboys; Sam Keenan; Brad Tighe; Matt Herman and Chad O?Donnell. Sam Keenan kicked four goals. Aw ar ds:Players Player, Chad O?Donnell; Coaches and Directors to Sam Keenan.
