2019 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE

ROUND 10

MATT'S MESSAGE ceomatt harris Congratulations to all the Newcastle RL players involved in last weekend?s representative fixtures. On the Saturday two of our Rebels squads travelled to Kareela Oval to take on rep teams from the Shire. Our Under 19s The MAN Shake Emerging Rebels were defeated 16-8 by the Under 19 Cronulla Sharks Academy in a close one. Earlier in the day our A Plus Contracting open ladies blues team defeated Joeys JRLFC open ladies blues tag team 14-0. On Sunday the NSWRL Pioneers, which included ten players from our senior Rebels team, held off a fast-finishing Queensland Rangers outfit to record an enthralling 28-18 victory at Davies Park Brisbane. The match was in the balance until Kurri Kurri?s Jarom Haines produced a moment of brilliance in the dying moments ? a 70m dash against the run of play sealing a well-deserved victory. Well done to all the Pioneers players and head coach Matt Lantry. Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League action returns this weekend with round 10 of the Business Plaza Cup. The two Saturday games have front runners West Newcastle travelling to Peacock Field to take on Macquarie and Cessnock at home against South Newcastle. On Sunday Lakes Unites are up against Maitland at Cahill Oval while Kurri Kurri host Central Newcastle. Wet weather over recent weeks has resulted in the rescheduling of three games meaning that five teams still have at least one catch-up game to be played. Fingers crossed we are not required to add to this count in the coming weeks. Sunday?s Bulldogs v Butcher Boys match will be the BarTV live-stream feature game and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).?In 2019 Business Plaza Cup live-scores are also available via the NSWRL website (https://www.nswrl.com.au/draw/?competition=151).

NSWRL PIONEERS The NSWRL Pioneers defeated the XXXX Queensland Rangers 28-18 last Sunday at Davies Park in Brisbane. Coached by Matt Lantry, the team included eleven players from the Newcastle Rebels team and seven from the Ron Massey Cup. The Pioneers led 16-6 at half time while Queensland came back to play a strong second half. But NSW held their strong lead and followed up last season's 46-16 loss with a record victory. Sunday also saw two Newcastle representative teams travel to Kareela to play representative teams from the Shire. Our Under 19s Emerging Rebels were defeated by the Under 19s Cronulla Sharks Academy. The Open ladies blues team defeated Cronulla's St. Joseph squad 14-0. Congratulations to all players who participated. It was a great day for all teams. Congratulations to the winners from the Newcastle Rugby league from the Pioneers team: Sam Keenan, Blake Andrews, Mao Uta, Chad O'Donnell, Ryan Walsh, Alex Langbridge, Tama Koopu, Pata Mata'utia, Mitchell Cullen, Jarom Haines and Luke Higgins.

NELSON BAY SHARKS The Sharks took on Central during Ladies Day at Cahill Oval on Sunday with a great display from all players. Final score: 12 nil (1st round Butcher Birds beat us 42-nil). With a run of possession from penalties, the Butcher Birds scored one try in each half. Amongst all standout players, Hayley Dufour picked up both Players Player and Coaches Pick. Georgia Relf won Players Player last week in our win over Cessnock. Now, it?s great to see all players starting to contribute. KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS 1st Gr ade ? Fir est or m 1st grade effort was unquestionable and tireless with defence turning up for one another however the amount of defence took its toll and lessened the opportunities to build pressure and execute an offensive plan. The penalty count was not helpful. 2n d Gr ade ? Fir est or m Reserve grade had a loss this week against Macquarie (20-16). Just like round one, it was a game that got away from us as we were in an arm wrestle but failed to take advantage of several opportunities which would have changed the outcome of the game. Both Players Player and Coaches Award went to Brent Mendyk, with Blake Parry close behind due to his attack and defensive leadership. Open Gr ade ? Heddon Gr et a Hot el Open grade had a good win, with uncertain changes within the team. They were able to put in a consolidated effort. Un der 19?s - M it ch ell?s Ph ysiot h er apy 19?s executed the first half winning in every area and going in with a lead. However, being depleted and fatigued, the game slipped away in the last 10 mins. LLT - Heddon Gr et a Hot el The ladies ran in a comfortable win against a very good spirited Macquarie side who showed great fight. The girls can now enjoy their bye on the back of two consecutive wins as we approach a challenging schedule. Emma Hodson was terrific and received both Players Player and Coaches Award.

M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: Fir st Gr ade: Came up with a hard fought and well earned 20-12 win over the Kurri Bulldogs to keep the side still in the hunt for the semi finals. The commitment and effort has been there, highlighted by the fact that the Scorpions have the 3rd best defence in the competition. Let?s hope the boys can do it again this week against Wests. Best for the Scorpions were Royce Geoffrey, Bobby Treacy and Cam Davies. Reser ve Gr ade: Have now put back to back wins together with a very close 22-16 win over the Kurri Bulldogs to keep them entrenched in the top five. This side is starting to put it together and defend strongly which is pleasing the coach, Matt Jordan. Best for the Scorpions were Lachlan Preston, Cody Robbins and Adam Swadling. Open Gr ade: Tried very hard but unfortunately went down 18-4 to a very good Kurri side. A few errors at crucial times certainly made it difficult to build any pressure, but the Opens never threw in the towel and with results going their way have maintained 4th spot on the ladder. Best were Dylan Smith, Haine Ropati and Alex Emerton. Un der 19s: Eventually came away with a very strong win and maintained their spot in the top five. Best for the Scorpions were Hayden Sinclair who had a great game crossing for 4 tries, Dean Morris and Ryan Shaw. Ladies Leagu e Tag: The ladies tried very hard again and went down 48-0, but no one can fault their commitment with between 10 and 12 of the girls training each night. Keep your heads up ladies, the club is proud of you. A big thank you to all the players who backed up last weekend, showing great club spirit.

M AITLAND PICKERS BELIEVE & ACHIEVE Maitland Pickers We would like to thank all our sponsors greatly, without your support we don?t exist.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS It was a tough outing for the McCloy Group Lakes United Seagulls when we ventured to Harker Oval for our second encounter with the Rosellas, made worse by the torrential rain both in the days leading up and on match day. The Ladies League take took out their fixture 2-1. No this is not a misprint. In an entertaining encounter despite the conditions, the two sides were very evenly matched with a penalty goal being the difference. Strong performances right across the park for our ladies. The Under 19s went down 14-10 in what shapes as a preview to September football. A couple of last passes going to ground in late stages made a difference. Ryan Potts and Bailey Allardice were the difference for Lakes as they continue their strong form. The Open grade side were right in the game until the late stages of the second half, unable to overcome the highly fancied West outfit. Captain Kris Sheppard showed great control winding back the clock with his tactical kicking game whilst several of the under 19s put in good performances in backing up. Final Score West 8 Lakes 0. The Reserve grade took on Wests second tier First Grade side which contained more stars than seen on Hollywood Boulevard. As the rain bucketed down, the young seagull outfit was outgunned by a vastly more experienced Wests side. Adam Barnes and Jacob Hull gave characteristic strong performances but the Reggies were unable to contain the size and depth of the opposition. West comprehensive winners 42-0. The First grade side went out and started well against the competition heavyweights leading 6-4 in the opening exchanges. But the power and player points of the Western Suburbs machine swung into full gear and the young Seagulls were blown off the park down 38-6 at the break. The pleasing thing for coach Sheppard is that they kept it 0-0 in the second half, and gained some much needed confidence before the badly needed weekend off. Shaun Boss was strong for the Seagulls. West 38 - Lakes 6. Last Sunday saw the Blues Tag team take on Macquarie as we hosted the Blues Tag stand-alone weekend with four games at Cahill Oval. The Seagalls were too strong for the Scorps from the outset taking the game 82-0. In a great team effort, Laura Daley, Sam Redman and Hayley Arden had big games combining well throughout the game to orchestrate the clinical attack.

WESTERN SUBURBS ROSELLAS Last Sunday, our Lady Rosellas played in the Rep Round, Blues Tag Extra Round 2 playing Maitland and coming away with a good win. West 24 def eat ed M ait lan d 6. We would also like to congratulate the NSW Pioneers team and coach Matt Lantry for defeating the QLD Rangers 28 ? 18 in Queensland on the weekend. It was a great effort by all the players involved in the game. This Saturday, we look forward to playing the Macquarie Scorpions in all 5 grades at Peacock Field. Our last games played against Lakes United Seagulls at Harker Oval and the West Rosellas came away with 4 wins from 5 games going down in Ladies League Tag.
