Holiness Concepts What does it mean to live and reflect a holiness lifestyle in our conduct and attire? Most often when people think of pentecost, they think of the dress styles and forms of pentecostal ladies. There are a few distinguishing characteristics of pentecostal ladies that people unfamiliar with biblical concepts of holiness will recognize and often not understand the reason behind it. Lack of Make-Up Dresses on the Ladies Long Hair The first thing we need to recognize is the above items are historically in our western culture reflected in women of past generations. However as our culture has become more and more base, sensual and ignorant of biblical concepts, the “Church World” has lost it’s distinguishing identity. You would not have to go back very far to see, that ladies dressed in a much more modest, feminine, and demure fashion just a few decades ago. The sexual revolution of the 60’s until now has slowly eroded the basic ideals of modesty and the distinction of the sexes. The Christian Church is faced with the decision, “Will we change the concepts of righteousness to fit in with our world, or will we strive for a biblical basis for everything we do, even if the rest of the world becomes more and more sensual and immoral.
Hair? What does the Bible say about it? Hair - An area of Controversy, and has been confused by many. Simply put. The Bible says what it says and stands on what it says. We will be judged by what it says. Hair is a covering. Men are not supposed to cover their heads with long hair, and women are to have their heads covered. It is a shame for men to have long hair, and it is a shame for a women to have short hair. This issue is not length, but obedience.
1 Corinthians 11:1-16 1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. 10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. 13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. Paul starts out telling them, follow me and keep the Ordinances that he gave them. He begins by telling them
the order of authority. Christ is the head of the man, The head of the wife is the husband. He then tells them, a man prophesying with his head covered dishonors his head. The question we must ask, is WHAT IS THE COVERING? It tells us in verse 14, what it is that men should not have covering their heads, HAIR, specifically LONG HAIR. If a man has long hair, he is dishonoring Christ and this is a shame. This is not interpretation, this is what the Bible is saying. The next point to study in context is the woman. If a woman prays with her head uncovered, she dishonors her headâ€Ś which is her Husband and Christ. What is the Covering? Look at verse 15. It tells us what is her covering. It is her Hair. When a woman prays with SHORN or SHAVEN hair, she is in effect praying with her head uncovered and is dishonoring her husband and Christ. Verse 16 tells us how to handle those that are contentious. We do not have a custom of being contentious, our custom is to follow the ordinance and teaching that Paul through Scripture has given us. We will not argue or fuss about what someone thinks, we will obey scripture and let them be judged by it. We will not judge them in their lack of understanding of the scripture. We are simply responsible for what we know and we will not judge those who do differently. We will not be contentious. It is without argument that a woman's hair is her Glory. Every manner of a woman throughout the world spend money and time on their hair. How many hours are spent in hair care products. It is interesting that Men naturally go bald. Women however do not. It further illustrates the principle in Nature. The Bottom Line. It is not the length women will be judged by, but the obedience of the principle that women should have long or at least uncut hair. It is a principle in obedience. Men cut their hair short. Women should not cut their hair and let it grow as long as it will. Obeying this Ordinance has power with God, man and even the Angels.
CONCEPTS OF HOLINESS
Concepts of Modesty Modesty is a forgotten word in our current culture. People no longer feel a need to be modest and you see all manner of things that are not descent or modest. This is not all together the peoples fault, but because of a lack of biblical teaching and a spirit of sanctification, people do not know what the bible says on subjects of personal holiness. It is imperative that everyone strives to wear modest apparel that does not accentuate the sexuality of the wearer or draw the attention of others. Modesty should be the goal for every christian.
And that women may be dressed in simple clothing, with a quiet and serious air; not with broided hair and gold or jewels or robes of great price; 1 Timothy 2: 9-10 themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:" Modesty is a Principle we should pursue in our own dress and encourage our children to follow suit.

Jewelry has been the scourge of all heathen societies, and our society is becoming more and more sensual and sex driven . The more so it becomes the more places they will pierce, chain, tattoo and expose. Costly array, the bible straightly charges us not to wear Gold, Silver or Pearls. It is the issue of Adornment. Don’t do it! This is what the Bible teaches. In Old Testament patterns when the People of God were backsliding they begin to wear more and more jewelry, when they repented they took the jewelry off. MEN SHOULD BE MEN AND WOMEN SHOULD BE WOMEN
“ The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.” Deuteronomy 22 Since the beginning, God created Adam and Eve, there has always been a difference between men and women. The reason for that is by design. Men and women are different in strengths and weakness. If you study the Bible, you will see an reoccurring theme of distinction between male and female. This does not mean one is better than the other, simply each are uniquely important and special. We live in a culture that is promoting the normalization of the Homosexual lifestyle to the point that mainline denominations have not only chosen to ignore scripture on this issue, but has went so far as putting them in the highest realms of authority in their churches. When confronted with this, what does the Bible say about all of this? In Summary, the scripture demonstrates an expectation of a distinction of sexes in appearance, apparel and even speaks to the length and care of hair. If it was an isolated scripture, it could be excused to some anomaly, however the scripture is clear in this area. We as Christians should strive to represent to our world a distinction of men and women. We do that by striving for a consistent, modest and godly presentation of ourselves that is true to our gender. The scripture referenced above speaks to the pressing opinion of God that men and women should not wear clothes that belong to the other. From this and other scriptural teachings we strive to please God. This is demonstrated in women wearing the apparel that is distinctively female and for men to wear that which is distinctively male. A dress or skirt is distinctively gender specific attire for a woman. A pair of pants is distinctively gender specific attire for a woman. If we ever have been people who have striven to present a life that feared God and believed scripture and present it to our world it is in this area of how we dress. Some would take issue and disagree. We do not judge or condemn those who disagree, however as Pentecostals this is a source of identity that is important for us to recognize. In most things of this nature, it is a matter of personal consecration. Often it requires a seeking of the Lord through prayer and study for these things to take on significance to the individual. The fact that the teaching of these things is clear in scripture does not negate for many a need to feel this confirmed in their own lives.
It is important that heed the teaching of scripture, the advice and directions of pastors who teach and believe in holiness and seek to do God’s will. If we will do this, the Lord will give us the needed direction and peace we need to do what will please him.
