FARO – ‘Building’ Accuracy and Speed for NEWBIM CONSTRUCTION/ BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING The portable FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D X 330 is an integrated part of NEWBIM ApS’ high-quality Building Information Technology services. Even in bright sunlight, it accurately scans ranges of up to 330m and offers an integrated GPS as well as remote scanning.

Based in Lyngby, Denmark, NEWBIM ApS is a renowned construction industry consultancy that specialises in providing high-quality Building Information Modeling (BIM) to a wide range of clients. Although the company was formed in 2010 in order to create product-specific 3D/BIM objects for building consultants, it soon became clear that the diverse working methods of companies involved in construction industry projects were a real barrier to standardisation. The company is able to deliver software courses and to supply both ready-to-use and customised templates, BIM objects for manufacturers and BIM object libraries for designers. Crucial to NEWBIM’s activities, the company’s comprehensive 3D laser scanning services include 3D laser scanning and point cloud to BIM conversion in addition to the digitalization of existing buildings. To enable further efficiencies to be achieved and to allow the delivery of faster and more accurate data and BIM models to its customers, NEWBIM recently invested in the advanced FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D X 330. REALISTIC, VISUALLY ACCURATE 3D MODELS Galina Slavova, BIM Specialist at NEWBIM explained: “NEWBIM’s experience with the FARO Focus3D X 330 began when we first tested the technology in order to see how the results could be incorporated into our BIM project models. We were extremely happy with the laser scanner’s ease of use and speed and delighted with the excellent, precise results that we achieved.

“Now in regular use, by linking the point clouds achieved with our Focus3D X 330 to site locations in Autodesk® InfraWorks® 360, we were able to capture reliable and precise data for analysis of the location under measure and for starting up the conceptual design of buildings. “By linking point clouds into the FARO® Revit® software, we achieve a much more accurate basis for modelling existing buildings than any of the other registration methods we previously used. Furthermore, by the use of FARO® PointSense for Revit®, we now provide our clients with realistic, visually accurate reports of 3D models. “With the use of the FARO® SCENE software, we process the scanned data quickly and often register more than 90% of the scans automatically. From 3D laser scanning to BIM, we experience a seamless process. PointSense for Revit gives us the opportunity to model buildings faster and more accurately based on the point cloud data. Remote scanning as well as almost unlimited scan data sharing via the FARO® SCENE WebShare Cloud makes the laser scanning solution truly mobile. The SCENE software is specifically designed to process 3D point clouds collected by FARO laser scanners. SCENE processes and manages scanned data easily and efficiently by using automatic object recognition as well as scan registration and positioning. SCENE can also generate high-quality colourised scans very quickly, while providing the tools for automated targetless or target-based scan positioning. This powerful registration software is extremely user-friendly and can perform tasks from simple measuring to 3D visualization, 3D meshing and exporting into various point cloud and CAD formats. Added verification steps now allow users to confirm if a scan registration result is contextually correct, adding an additional level of confidence to their data quality. The SCENE 6.2. software version provides a powerful large scale meshing tool for automatic modelling of free form shapes. Meshes can be calculated, viewed and exported into various standard formats.

Once the scan project is complete, scan data can be published on a web server at the touch of a button. With the SCENE WebShare Cloud, laser scans can be easily accessed and viewed with a standard Internet browser. This version also allows the viewing of multilayer overview maps.
