Dear Alumni and Friends of Newberry College, The success of this past fiscal year, like that of Newberry College and many things, can — and should — be measured in terms of the opportunities we’ve created for others. Innovative new programs that meet the needs of today’s learner. Scholarships that allow students to attend college, maybe for the first time in the history of their family. State-of-the-art facilities that provide space for learning and community-building. These are just a few — big — ways we create opportunity at Newberry College, and it’s all thanks to you.

In the last fiscal year alone, we: •

Launched new undergraduate majors in cybersecurity, information technology, and public health

•

Added the Master of Arts in criminal justice and Master of Education in teaching, learning & curriculum, our third and fourth graduate programs

•

Signed a historic partnership with the South Carolina National Guard to provide a $1,000 scholarship and an on-campus liaison for students who are members of the guard

•

Added online professional certifications across industries for our students, alumni and the community to acquire new skills or stay current in their credentials

•

Partnered with Columbia College as the first pair of institutions to co-host the South Carolina Teaching Fellows program. The fellowship provides financial and professional support to high-achieving teacher education majors who desire to teach in South Carolina. The first cohort will begin next fall

•

Launched the first collegiate student-led sports show in the history of FloSports, “Wolves Weekly.” Covering the competition and culture of Newberry’s 24 sports and two spirit squads, the show is written, filmed, produced, and edited by communications students. The show airs every Thursday on FloSports, the official streaming partner of the South Atlantic Conference

Opened our ninth on-campus residence hall, which is now home to over 100 sophomore students

•

Opened a bariatric simulation lab, with the help of a grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation. The lab will provide nursing students with hands-on learning experiences to recognize direct correlations between obesity and potential health risks

Each of these accomplishments represents countless opportunities created for our students and for people in our community and beyond. When you give to Newberry, your gift doesn’t stop on our campus. It keeps going and going with a rippling effect, empowering the regional economy to the tune of $98 million, and most importantly, touching countless lives as our graduates go out and change the world.

On behalf of the entire Institutional Advancement team, I am pleased to share with you this year’s Annual Report.

Looking around campus, I feel excited about the future of Newberry College and the opportunities you have helped to create. This past year we introduced several exciting new learning opportunities for our students, including a new bariatric simulation lab in the Darby Nursing & Health Science Center and partnerships with Columbia College and FloSports. We continue to remain one of the South’s best colleges, celebrating our ninth consecutive year in the region’s overall top 20 schools according to U.S. News & World Report. Our campus footprint continues to expand as well. We recently opened our ninth residence hall, Midlands Hall, and we are in the early planning stages for a new home for the Division of Business, Communications, & Sport.

It is because of you that stories like these are possible. Your support of the mission to provide a high-quality education is key to the impact on our students, their families, and to future generations. When you gave this year, you didn’t just give to Newberry College, you gave through Newberry College to make these positive impacts. I offer my sincere appreciation to all our donors and supporters for the many contributions made this past year, from athletics to academic initiatives to the Newberry Fund. I am incredibly humbled to be a part of a college with such a strong foundation and philanthropic spirit.

The first time I stepped on our beautiful campus I was immediately inspired; opportunity was everywhere. Eight months later, I continue to be inspired by the work and achievements of our alumni, friends, and corporate and foundation partners. They think big, act boldly, and are committed to envisioning the future possibilities at Newberry College.

It is my hope that as you read through this Annual Report, you too are inspired. Throughout the following pages, you will find a snapshot of a successful fundraising year – overwhelmingly due to our generous donors – and the accomplishments and opportunities made possible. Because of you, Newberry College has been able to play a pivotal role in providing programs focused on the 21st century workforce while remaining committed to our liberal arts background, thus making an economic impact across South Carolina and the nation. George Bernard Shaw once said, “don’t wait for the right opportunity. Create it.” The opportunities at Newberry College are endless and I am confident that our most prosperous times are yet to come. What will you create?

Paving the Way Thanks to some dedicated alumni, the African American Alumni Chapter of the Newberry College Alumni Association is re-energized and focused on supporting African American students and engaging with the community.

The African American Alumni Chapter of the Newberry College Alumni Association was formed in 1999 following the passing of alumnus Mike Washington. Its purpose is to maintain lifelong friendships forged at Newberry College by meeting at least once annually to come together in fellowship.

For members of the alumni chapter, it provides a way to not only stay connected with the College but to support each other as well as future generations of alumni.

After a period of inactivity, the group is re-engaged and leading activities to support students and the campus. They have established an endowed scholarship fund for African American students, with recipients selected based on GPA requirements and recommendations from the scholarship committee.

“Overall, a liberal arts education, in my opinion, is the best education you can get. And I think many of the African American alumni feel the same way,” says Pamela Roberson ’85. “If we want to see the College continue to exist and individuals get the same education, or even better than what the older generations had, we have to see it grow to advance. And if we’re not being involved in giving, it’s not going to exist.”

Each year, the group hosts a fundraising gala to support the endowment fund. In addition to financial giving, members have also participated in the Muller Center Table Talks, where they can share meals and

meaningful conversations with students. They have also provided financial support and guidance to the student-led Black Student Union organization.

The chapter works to create opportunities not only for students at Newberry College, but for the community that surrounds it, as well as for alumni to make an impact on campus and beyond. Members work with the Newberry Young Professionals to collect hats, underwear, gloves, and socks for the winter months.

They also participate in Newberry’s annual MLK Day walk and prayer service.

“For me, it’s personal,” says Sylvester Coleman ’87, who also serves on the Newberry College Board of Trustees. “I want to give back because Newberry College paved the way to where I am today. A degree from Newberry carries some weight. The last couple years we’ve had people who have been away for 30 or 40+ years, who’ve come back and they’re just amazed at the changes that have occurred here. Compare it to 1987, when I graduated, and it’s night and day. So that’s my challenge. Come and see it for yourself, and hopefully you can feel that excitement and be motivated to get involved and give back.”

Since 1982, Jimmie Coggins ’74 has been the Voice of Newberry and of Newberry College athletics through his role as president and general manager of WKDK radio. For him, giving back means walking the walk, in addition to talking the talk.

A lifelong resident of Newberry, Coggins grew up immersed in the excitement of Newberry College athletics. After graduating high school, he enrolled at Newberry, where he was inspired by President A.G.D. Wiles in his success.

“He opened the door for me to come to Newberry, and I did not let him down,” says Coggins. “I’m forever grateful to him and the College for that opportunity.”

In addition to monetary gifts, predominantly in support of Newberry athletics and toward a scholarship fund in memory of his late father, Coggins gives the College airtime on WKDK in monthly Coffee Hour segments, coaches shows, and live coverage of sporting events. In gratitude for his support and legendary dedication and skill, he received an honorary doctorate in 2007, induction into the Newberry College Men’s Basketball Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2008, and a place in the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Even before he became the Voice of Newberry, following in the footsteps of his father, James F. Coggins, he was serving his community in the Rotary Club and as president of the Newberry County unit of the American Cancer Society. At the College, he has also been a member of the President’s Club, the Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club, the Newberry College 150th Anniversary Committee, and the Board of Trustees.

Whether it’s serving the College or the community he calls home, Coggins is passionate about giving back to the places and people who give so much to others.

For him, supporting the College means supporting both simultaneously.

“The College is one of the driving engines of the community. A lot of communities our size don’t have anything like this, so we’re very fortunate,” he says. “We have so many great opportunities for the

Having just celebrated his golden college reunion in 2024, Coggins encourages his fellow alumni to see for themselves the growth and impact the College has on its students and beyond.

“Come back to campus and take a look at what’s going on, the progress that’s being made, from new buildings to new programs,” he says. “I know people who hadn’t been on campus for 30 years or more and came back and got energized. Maybe some of those folks need to come take another look.”

Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club The Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club changed its name and continues to make strides in supporting the student-athletes of Newberry College.

The Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club has been the leading auxiliary for Newberry College athletics since 1952. The organization supports student-athletes’ scholarships and the welfare of Newberry College through athletic programs.

The Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club hosted a golf tournament that raised a total of $23,120. The Club also hosted the annual Howling Wolf Night event in March which raised a total of $8,726.

Since taking over the reins of the Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club, director Sharon Bryant ’11 continues to aim high for student-athletes. “At Newberry College, we strive to be a family and support each other in every way possible. The studentathletes here work hard on the field and in the classroom and it shows. It is an honor to help athletes achieve their goals.”

The Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club finished strong yet again this year with $361,685 raised, an increase of $35,767 over the previous year. In addition, the Club ended the year with 294 members, including 34 new members.

Quality & Care Thanks to a grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation, Newberry is preparing students to treat underrepresented patients.

If you’ve walked the halls of the Darby Nursing & Health Science Center in recent months, you may have noticed a new training lab. Thanks to grant funding provided by the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation, an independent licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association, Newberry College nursing students are training in a bariatric simulation lab, gaining practical and realistic learning experiences in treating patients with obesity.

Obese patients are significantly underrepresented in health care training. This can lead to a lack of preparedness and sensitivity among health care staff. Obesity rates in South Carolina are especially troubling, with a statewide rate of 35%, or more than one in three individuals.

Launched at the beginning of the fall 2024 semester, the lab is equipped with male and female bariatric manikins with co-morbidities and skin conditions associated with bariatric patients. There is a bariatric hospital bed, pediatric and adult simulation suits, a 3D obesity display, and a pediatric care simulator.

These resources provide students with the tools

and training to recognize direct correlations between obesity and potential health risks.

“One of the pivotal problems in South Carolina, in particular, and even Newberry County, is obesity,” says Dr. Jerry Alewine, dean of nursing and health sciences. “If you can imagine, in the hospital, if you’ve got someone who weighs 400 pounds or 600 pounds, taking care of them is totally different than what you would do if you would take care of someone who weighed, say, 180 pounds.

“This bariatric center will train our nursing students to take a holistic approach to treating these patients and provide the best quality of care. It will also allow us to take the knowledge we’re getting in a simulation setting and apply it to a clinical setting, and then hopefully do some research for our community to see,” he adds.

Just as important as the equipment, the lab fosters collaboration with other disciplines and departments. Students have opportunities to work with faculty in the nutrition and exercise science departments, for example, as well as staff at the

Newberry Medical Center of Newberry College and Newberry County Memorial Hospital. With these resources and partnerships, graduates of the nursing program will be well prepared to treat obese patients with the highest level of care.

Nursing students appreciate how much the lab has helped them improve their critical thinking and communication skills, and ability to collaborate, in a short amount of time.

“Working in the bariatric simulation lab as a nursing student has significantly enhanced my preparedness for a nursing career by providing hands-on experience in patient care specific to obesity management,” says Ana Rodas, a senior

nursing major who plans to graduate in December 2024. “I gained valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by bariatric patients, allowing me to develop tailored care strategies and a compassionate approach that emphasizes empathy and understanding.”

Macy Bagwell, a junior nursing major, echoes these sentiments. “As a cohort, we have greatly benefited from the bariatric simulation lab, which has been an invaluable tool in preparing us for real-life scenarios we may encounter in health care. This experience has significantly enhanced my confidence and competence as a student nurse, equipping me with the skills necessary to provide high-quality care for bariatric patients.”

A Story of Opportunity Marina Ziehe ’14

Marina Ziehe ’14 trained and studied for years to earn a tennis scholarship to attend college in the United States. A decade later, she’s producing videos for the Brazilian Olympic Committee.

At age eight, Marina Ziehe leapt headfirst into gymnastics. She dreamed of one day taking her talents to the world stage, representing her native Brazil in the Olympic Games. She was off to a great start, until four years later, when her coach, the only one in her hometown of Macaé, retired. “It broke my heart,” she says. Over the next two years, she discovered tennis, and it was love at first serve.

For Marina, tennis wasn’t just a hobby. Through the possibility of scholarships, tennis was her ticket to the United States, where she could receive a highquality education in the land of opportunity. At age 15, she left Macaé, on Brazil’s east coast, to live with her grandmother in Petrópolis, three hours away. She believed the Imperial City offered greater chances to hone her skills.

“My family couldn’t afford my coming here. It’s just too expensive to go to school here. I would have to get a scholarship,” she says. “I spent two years preparing myself to come here. It was such a rough path to be a 15-year-old going away from home and practicing tennis eight hours a day to get a scholarship.

Everybody in town was like, ‘what are you doing? You don’t even know if you’re gonna get it.’”

Outside of completing her high school requirements via distance learning, she practiced tennis and studied English. After having partnered with an agency that helps athletes earn scholarships, she submitted videos of her tennis skills, took the required tests, sent it all in, and waited.

“I got some offers from other colleges, but Newberry offered me a really good scholarship. Almost a full ride.

I looked at the Newberry website and social media at the time, and I liked it. Newberry just sounded like a cool place,” she says.

As long as she could remember, Marina had a penchant for storytelling. She especially enjoyed stories that highlighted people and parts you don’t often see. “I was very interested in daily stories, of everyday life, hidden in plain sight. Not-so-common stories. Stories off the beaten path,” she says. When she arrived at Newberry in January 2011, she enrolled in the two programs that best fit the bill: communications and graphic design.

Marina committed intensely to her studies and her sport. In the 2012 season, she was named to the South Atlantic Conference Honor Roll, designated a Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete, and enjoyed success on the court, particularly in doubles play. In the record book, she stands tied at No. 9 for doubles win percentages in a season, taking 77% of matches in her senior season. She ranks third in career fourth singles wins with 18, and sixth for career second doubles wins with 25.

During her last semester at Newberry, she started an internship with South Carolina ETV. The role would later turn full-time as she completed her master’s in organizational leadership. Her work at ETV revolved around the Carolina Money initiative — sharing stories of the Midlands business community — and ETV’s partnership with the South Carolina Telehealth Alliance.

“For this telehealth program, we would go out — usually just me with my camera equipment — to where a patient had a great experience with telehealth. I’ll tell the story of the patients, instead of just what telehealth is. Telehealth can be a hard subject to talk about. It can be very technical. So, my job was to chase the human aspect of the story.”

After stints with South Florida PBS and Quora in Portuguese, Marina created her own video series called “Let Me Tell You a Story.” She went through her community in Brazil and made short-form videos of stories she found interesting and insightful. “I would find interesting people in our daily lives, who sometimes you don’t give much attention to. The guy who sells flowers in a flower shop. The lady who works at the bakery. I even told the story of a caretaker for a graveyard and how he deals with death.”

Eventually, one of her videos caught the eye of the Brazilian Olympic Committee. “They saw one of my stories, one about a disabled man who played tennis in a wheelchair. They were like, ‘we love your work and we need someone like you doing what you do for sports.’”

She started working with the committee in 2021 and came aboard full-time in 2022. “It doesn’t stop. There’s not a day that we go to the office and there’s nothing to do. There are always things to do. We’re not waiting around for work every two years.”

Her work has taken her all over the world, covering various sports and games, including the 2024 Winter

Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea, the PanAmerican Games in Chile, and of course, the summer games in Paris this past summer. She went to Paris 20 days before the start of the games to cover the preparations, and as fate would have it, she traveled with the Brazilian gymnastics team.

Her specialty has been the unseen behind-the-scenes work done by countless individuals that makes the games possible. “I went to their studios and I filmed them, and they were so thankful for it, because nobody ever told their stories before.”

One of her favorite projects is her video on the 27-yearold Brazilian architect who won the medal design competition for the youth winter games in Gangwon.

“All the medalists got something from Brazil, and I told the story of how he created the medal. As it turned out, Brazil won our first-ever medal at a Winter Youth Olympic Games, and I got to see the encounter between our first Brazilian winter games medalist and the Brazilian who designed the medals. It was a mix of arts and sports.”

In October 2024, Marina returned to Newberry for the first time since graduating to thank her professors and others who made her success possible. “When I got here, it made me value what I had here, because I had to work really hard for it. It was not easy, no. That’s this idea of taking advantage of the opportunities you have.

Even coming to South Carolina was like a calling, and I felt I had to come back and walk through the streets and talk to the people who helped me get to where I am today.

“I am very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in my life to do something I’m passionate about, that has purpose and is of service to others. I’m grateful to these people, to this place.”

As a student-nurse and student-athlete at Newberry, Kensley (Jordan) Gibson ’19 learned resilience, found love, and laid the foundations for success. Now, she’s serving up even bigger impacts for other rising stars.

She works as a medical & surgical unit PRN nurse.

She teaches nurse aide classes at a community college. She’s a personal trainer. She runs an online health and wellness business. She and her husband, Luke Gibson ’20, train young athletes in basketball, volleyball, speed and agility. She learned how to do and manage all these things and more during her time at Newberry.

“I went through nursing school while playing volleyball at the collegiate level and that was one of the most challenging things I have ever done. I appreciate the College even giving me the opportunity to do both at the same time. It definitely taught me how to be resilient,” Kensley says.

Not only was she able to take advantage of myriad opportunities at Newberry and prepare for a successful career, but she could do all that at a place that also felt like home.

“My experience at Newberry College is one of the most special things to me. Mainly because of the people I met, even if they held a temporary place in

my life, the lifelong friends I made, the impact on the volleyball program that I had, and I met my husband there!” she says. “It was so fun, so challenging, and so rewarding. I also just love the school in general: the cafeteria staff, the professors, the coaches, the athletic trainers. I love the vibe on campus. It was just such an honor to spend four years of my life there.”

Now, Gibson is passionate about making sure the next generation has even greater resources than she had.

“I have had a lot of success after graduating from Newberry. I figured the best way to show my gratitude to the College was to give back,” she says.

“I am blessed to show my appreciation in a way that can benefit the future of the school and the future of the volleyball program.

“I would tell other young alumni that if Newberry College had an impact on you and your life, then show your appreciation by giving back to the place that has given so much to you.”

Coach Deral Brown ’13 was formed and strengthened during his time as a student and All-American wrestler for Newberry. Now as head wrestling coach, he’s fully invested in doing the same for the next generation.

“Newberry made me the person I am today,” says Brown. “I feel like the holistic approach to education that I received when I was here as a student, as an athlete, helped me on all fronts. Spiritually I was nourished here. As an athlete, I continue to improve and develop. Even socially, some of my best friendships, over a decade later, started at Newberry.

You really can’t get another place like Newberry, from a bang-for-your-buck perspective. So it’s easy to invest in something that helped me.”

Brown returned to his alma mater in 2018 as an assistant wrestling coach and took the reins as head coach in 2021. Since then, he has led the Wolves to fourth place at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals event, an NCAA Super Region II championship, 16 NCWA Scholar AllAmerican awards, continued consecutive seasons with All-American designations, and appearances at the NCAA national tournament every year.

Brown gives back a portion of his earnings to the wrestling program and to the Scarlet & Gray Athletic Club, which provides scholarships, gear, and other needs for all Newberry athletics. In doing so, he creates opportunities for student-athletes across the College, both on and off the field of competition.

“I’m not just here to clock in and clock out and collect a paycheck, but I think it shows that I’m invested as an employee,” he says. “It shows you’ve got skin in the game. You’re invested in the mission and the vision of the institution you work for. That’s one thing that separates Newberry from a lot of other schools: the investment of our employees in our students.

“We’re family, and we very much take that approach first. That’s what makes it easy for me to give. I believe in what we do.”

For Jason Burger ’98, Newberry was a launchpad for success in sports and business.

Now, he’s investing in the success of future generations.

He’s a mover and a shaker. After playing football for Newberry, majoring in sport management and graduating in spring 1998, Burger pursued his dream of working for an NFL team. He got his master’s in sports administration and earned scouting jobs with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins (now the Commanders).

At 30, he followed his father into restaurant franchising, growing from one to three McDonald’s locations in Knoxville, Tennessee, before moving back to the South Carolina coast. Burger believes in the importance of not only giving back but passing opportunity on for up-and-comers. In addition to giving personally, he also serves as vice president of the Newberry College Foundation.

“I just felt like I wanted to give back to Newberry.

I feel like I grew up there, from a young man to a man. Through ups and downs. I’ve also gotten a lot of lifelong friends, some of my best friends, from Newberry,” says Burger. “Newberry needs people

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds or other securities allow you to make a substantial gift to Newberry College at minimal cost. You will receive a tax deduction based on the value of the security on the date of the gift. With long-term appreciated securities (those held longer than 12 months), you will receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair-market value of your gift and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.

Once given to the College, we will sell for the benefits.

Make your gift go even further! Many companies participate in gift matching programs. Some companies will even match gifts made by retirees and spouses of employees. By including Newberry College in your will or making other planned gifts, you can provide for yourself and your loved ones, plan wisely for your future, and make

a meaningful gift to Newberry. Planned gifts enable you to preserve your assets during your lifetime and leave a valuable legacy at Newberry. Donors who make estate and other planned gifts are recognized as members of The Heritage Society, the College’s planned giving society.

Gifts of real estate are an excellent way to make a difference in the lives of Newberry College students and lower your tax liability at the same time. Gifts of property or a percentage of property may help you avoid paying capital gains tax, lower your current income tax and reduce your future federal estate taxes. Real estate gifts may increase your income if they are structured through a life income gift. You may also deed property, including vacation homes, to Newberry while retaining the lifetime right to occupy the property. Gifts of real estate must meet certain criteria and be approved by Newberry College’s Board of Trustees.

A new or old insurance policy may be an appropriate way to make a gift to Newberry College for future endowment priorities. Gifts of insurance will not be accepted for capital or current programming needs; only permanent life insurance policies, i.e., whole life or universal life, are accepted as gifts.

You can fund a new policy naming Newberry College as beneficiary, or you can name Newberry College as beneficiary of an existing policy. For each policy, provisions must be made to cover future premium payments. If you transfer ownership of the policy to Newberry College, all future premium payments are tax-deductible. Newberry College will only undertake the responsibility of making premium payments if the donor makes gifts to the College equal to the payments. If such gifts cease, the College will convert the policy to its cash value.

As with any financial decision, you should consult your CPA, attorney and other financial advisors.
