Bottom line? It’s about giving you the kind of

personal attention that will help you thrive and grow. It’s about helping you achieve a successful career and a meaningful life. It’s about guiding you toward what really lights the fire in your heart and soul. In the following pages, we’ll give you a glimpse of what it’s like to live and learn at Newberry College. IMAGINE THE INDEPENDENCE Other than summer camp, going away to college is probably your first time living away from home. At college, you’ll get your first real taste of adult freedom – and adult responsibility. Go to bed early or pull an all-nighter? Up to you. Eat a hearty breakfast or skip it for 15 more minutes of sleep? Your call. Do your laundry or wear the same shirt for eight days in a row? Uh, gross. [Take pity on the poor kid sitting behind you in English class!] Living on campus and having a roommate is an exciting new experience. Our roommate matching process helps you find and meet a potential roommate in advance or we’ll match you based on your preferences.

Here’s the thing about Newberry College. We work to create an environment where you’re totally tuned in and feel comfortable contributing in class. In other words, no wallflowers! [It’s tough to be anonymous in a class with 12 people.] You’ll get lots of face time with faculty [no graduate students teaching our classes.] You’ll build strong, supportive relationships with your professors. And because they take the time to really get to know you and understand your goals, your professors are able to help guide you to jobs and internships, write grad school recommendations and help you chart your career path.

IMAGINE THE EXPERIENCE They say practice makes perfect. We agree. That’s why we encourage you to put theory into practice through internships (required for some majors) and service-learning (volunteering as part of a class requirement). [Plus, it shows employers you can hit the ground running after graduation.]

BUSINESS STUDENTS did the training and testing

as part of their class to become IRS-certified tax preparers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS applied concepts from their Adaptive PE class to plan a basketball tournament

with Special Olympics South Carolina where they officiated games and led skill-building clinics.

You pay only for any additional course fees or travel costs.]

IMAGINE THE TEAMWORK Running with the Wolves When you’re a student-athlete at Newberry College, count on your coaches pushing you to give your best in your sport and in the classroom. It won’t be easy. It takes solid organization, strict discipline and diligent time management to achieve a winning season in both areas of your life. [Yeah, not easy, but definitely worth it!]

IMAGINE THE FAITH EXPLORATION Newberry College was founded by German Lutherans. [Yep, proud Lutherans since 1856!] Whatever your faith tradition, you’ll find a warm welcome at Newberry College. We’ll give you opportunities to explore your beliefs and live your values. [And we promise never to be pushy or judgey.]

Express Your Faith

Attend Wednesday chapel…take Communion Join the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Take a religion or ethics course (they fulfill core requirements) for a deep dive into your belief system Participate in a mission trip (Haiti was last year’s destination) Discuss big ideas in a small group Bible study

Explore Your Purpose In the Lutheran tradition, each of us is called by God to serve the church and society with our unique, individual gifts. [In Lutheran circles, we call that vocation.] If your calling (your passion and purpose in life) is unclear, you’re not alone. The Muller Center at Newberry College can help you explore the big questions about what truly matters to you in your life. Weekend and Daylong Retreats that investigate a specific theme or question. Table Talk meals with faculty and staff sharing the journey to their life’s calling. Sophomore Sojourners, a year-long, intensive experience for sophomores to explore their values, gifts, interests, meaning and purpose.

Hunter Bentley ’19 MAJOR: Chemistry, Secondary Education concentration HOMETOWN: Aiken, South Carolina HOW HE TAPS IN: Attends weekly Word & Worship service, serves as president of Lutheran Student Movement, member of the inaugural class of Sophomore Sojourners.

“Here at Newberry, you’re able to practice your faith and live in your spirituality alongside other students who may not share your same beliefs. That helps me continue to grow in my faith along with my friends. As a Lutheran, Newberry’s affiliation with the Lutheran Church was a bonus for me, but it doesn’t matter what religion you are or if you’re religious at all. The sense of community and compassion here is so strong. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!”

IMAGINE THE SMALL TOWN CHARM We’re located in the historic district of Newberry, South Carolina, where you’ll find plenty of small town Southern charm. [It’s no accident our nickname is The City of Friendly Folks.]

AROUND TOWN

Browse the shops and restaurants, check out music, dance, plays and lectures at the Newberry Opera House, or just pick your favorite flavor for a snowball at Pelicans. Our town hosts special events throughout the year, like Pork in the Park (region’s best BBQ), Oktoberfest and Irish Fling. [Y’all, we love our festivals!]   AROUND CAMPUS Enjoy the outdoor pool, tennis

courts, intramural sports and student activities. Cheer for the Wolves at a D-II game, go to a concert or lecture, or just relax in the rockers, swings and hammocks throughout campus.

AROUND THE REGION Newberry is a great home

base to visit other cool places. It’s just a couple of hours from here to the mountains or to some of the best beaches in the Southeast. Or when you’re just in the mood for dinner and a movie, make a quick trip to Columbia or Greenville.

OUTDOOR FUN Here in Newberry, Lynch’s Woods

offers trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding. If you’re into swimming, boating, fishing and watersports, head out to nearby Lake Murray or one of our many rivers. With state parks in every direction, you can get rustic whenever the mood strikes. And here in horse country, a trail ride is always a fun option.

IMAGINE THE PROGRESS

$35 MILLION Comprehensive Capital Campaign

It’s an exciting time at Newberry College with renovation and construction projects on the horizon that will upgrade facilities, enhance academics and enrich campus life.

Center for Teacher Education We completely renovated a vacant elementary school near campus to create an awesome new home for the Department of Teacher Education.

New Residence Hall Opened for occupancy in August 2018, Pearson Hall is the first step in a five-year plan to update student housing that includes major upgrades to existing facilities and new construction for additional residence halls.

STADIUM VILLAGE

Our game plan includes a new stadium (football, lacrosse, field hockey) and buildings that will house classrooms, offices, locker rooms and updated training facilities.

SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, ART & NURSING BUILDING

Plans include construction of a new 12,000 square foot facility for the Nursing program. Classrooms and labs will be upgraded in the existing 54,000 square foot building, which houses Science, Math and Art.

IMAGINE THE AFFORDABILITY Sticker Price vs. Net Price Sticker price is the full cost of tuition, fees, room and board you would pay if you didn’t receive financial aid. [Pretty unlikely, though, since more than 98% of Newberry College students receive some form of assistance!] Net price is your final cost after we’ve applied all Newberry aid, state and federal scholarships and grants and work-study opportunities.

Earning your college degree is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make in yourself. But let’s face it. College can be expensive. Figuring out how to pay for it is a big concern for students and their families. [We get it. We can help… really!]
