Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity e-News – Jan 2008 Current Building •

614 N. Main Street: During the summer George Fox students tore down the detached garage. In

late November a contractor leveled the existing house to make room for the new buildings. HFH staff is working with an architect to get a design for 2 homes on the lot. Ground breaking date is still several months away. Everest Street: The Building committee has been working here on and off over the past few months to repair tile, cabinets, add gutters, trim out closets, etc. The main task left is to re-paint some of the rooms and stairway. We will save this task for the family moving in.

We want to say a special thank you to Carlson Testing, Newberg Garbage and The Saunders Company for their help with the demolition and the compaction of the basement.

Committees Board of Directors: Two new board members were voted in at the January board meeting. Jared Jones is a retired engineer with Habitat experience from Silicon Valley Habitat. Ron Wolfe is with Columbia River Bank here in Newberg. He is a former Board member who resigned when he moved to Salem. We are glad that Ron has returned to the area and our Board. Family Selection: This group has met several times to pick a family for the empty Everest unit and

possibly two families for the Main Street project. The application dead line was Jan 15. The committee is comprised of Karen Maas, Carol Jones, Barb Zahler and Diane McNay. About 15 families have submitted applications. The committee is going through the applications to verify and interview the families. They hope to have a recommendation by the March or April Board meeting. Construction Crew: Jared and Larry have been scheduling activities for the crew mostly on Thursdays.

The crew is preparing a new construction trailer to be moved to the Main Street project in the spring. The warehouse on Wilsonville Road is being organized and thinned out. Excess materials will go the McMinnville Habitat Restore. Other building related tasks underway:

Ground breaking planning for Main St. Design drawings, engineering and permits for Main St. Site supervisor for Main St. project

Resource Development: Claire Rolfs created a solicitation letter went out to 2500 people in the Newberg

community asking for help in funding the Main St. project. We have received about $19,000 in donations so far! An Anonymous donor will generously match the donations at a two for one rate to purchase the Main Street property. WE STILL NEED MORE FUNDS TO START THIS NEW PROJECT. If you haven’t had the opportunity to donate or if you know if someone or a business that could help please contact Rick at the office. Finance : Larry Rummel has gone through our local By-laws and updated them. The Board approved the

changes at its last meeting. The organization has a positive cash balance for 2007 that will be applied to the Main St. project. Larry also held a one man Christmas tree recycle program that netted out $300. We have purchased signs for the Habitat truck, main office and the Main St job site.

W eb site: our web site is down and being relocated to a new url. We’ll give you an update next time. Lunch coordinator: Elaine Goodwin is the committee. She has lunches lined up for the next few months

and continues to do an outstanding job. Thank you Elaine! Other Committees: a new Volunteer Recruitment committee is being formed. Committees to be

formalized are Family Support, Site Selection, Board Growth, Resource Development, and Finance Committee. Lots of volunteers are needed for this committee work. Let us know if you would like to help out. Needs:

We would like to paint our old rusty green construction truck. Let us know if you know of someone who can help with this.
