“Your sense of space comes from what you feel, not just what you see.” “What gives a space character has a lot to do with the textures: here we have the brick wall, the glass tile in the backsplash, the wood floor, the cabinetry. The neutral palette provides softness that works beautifully with these bold, earthy textures, and acts as a backdrop for everything else.” Mary Jo Peterson, CKD, CBD, CAPS, is an award-winning designer and owner of a Connecticut-based design firm.

talking points. I was recently asked to give a presentation to a group of Boston designers; the topic was mine to choose. Hmm, what to discuss for the hour? I don’t subscribe to design trends, per se, so that was off my list. Art in the home? Too subjective. Color theory? Been there, done that. I had just returned from Marrakech and the Milan Furniture Fair (destinations where creativity flourishes), so my desire was to spur ideas and discuss how to stay curious and excited by design. I adore conversing with designers and artisans who are enthused by what they do. So, my talk began with the subject of PASSION. I know a ton of industry pros whose fierce energy is downright infectious: Jamie Drake, a fervent designer and master colorist. Jiun Ho, who approaches his interiors and furniture collection with great zeal. Clodagh, a one-word wonder, whose work is both mindful and holistic. The list goes on and on… Next, I delved into IMAGINATION. There are endless ways for designers, and homeowners for that matter, to be inspired. Travel! Take a garden tour! Visit a museum! Pin images on Pinterest! Download Instagram! And please, let’s not forget flipping through the pages of design magazines. My talk concluded with the matter of DESIGN, for it’s the creative process—the sketching, the shopping, the installation—that interests me most. What you see on our pages is the end result. Yet getting there, with passion, imagination and design, is where the real thrill lies.

PASSION, IMAGINATION, DESIGN Exciting fabric hanging in Dedar’s Milan showroom; a beautifully designed riad in Marrakech; an imaginatively attired Moroccan woman.

GLOBAL SATURATION With his recently launched collection for Duralee, textile designer John Robshaw has penned a passionate love letter to the vibrant personalities, exotic locales and indelible encounters he’s experienced on his travels across the Asian continent. Diving headfirst into this latest venture—which includes his inaugural foray into woven designs—Robshaw has scribed an arresting quartet of colorways, from the earthy and engaging tones that thread themselves through Charcoal/Moss Green and the dramatic dyes found in Indigo/Turquoise, to the boldly saturated hues of Madder/Coral and quietly sophisticated shades expressed in Umber/Khaki. The fabrics’ colors, prints and textures are imbued with Robshaw’s inquisitive, adventurous spirit, and speak to venerated traditional techniques and diverse cultural histories. “My work has always had a strong artsy-ethnic bent,” says Robshaw. “This collection really articulates that small-batch, hand-loomed and -blocked prints vibe.” duralee.com; johnrobshaw.com

INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS Renowned architecture outfit Marmol Radziner has taken its modernist, sustainably minded approach to design and applied it to jewelry. Spare of material and form, the simplicity of the commercial-grade brass and bronze rings, pendants and bracelets—forged in the same studio where the firm’s architectural models and details are made—reflect a purity of style embraced by design principal Ron Radziner. shop.marmol-radziner.com

Furthering the work of its late namesake founder, Donghia continues to push the design envelope with new offerings that are at once innovative yet classic. To wit: the Acadia end table, designed by Joseph Jeup with a glass top and starburst pattern wood shelf; the geometric Forma table, shown here clustered into a larger configuration; and the 12-arm, smoked Murano glass Fontana chandelier. donghia.com

SUGAR RUSH With a name like Candy, Studio Roeper’s newly introduced coffee table is definitely all parts sweet. Whipped up using a combination of components, including 83 sheets of silver leaf, a quart of crystal clear epoxy, black lacquer and two sumptuous hides from Edelman Leather, the curvy, eye-catching piece is a departure from the mostly linear offerings of the brand. “The leather on this table dictated the form, as it begged to be stretched around something with a bend,” says company founder and senior craftsman Florian Roeper. “A cylinder was not very compelling to me, so I opted for a teardrop shape. It is powerful and dynamic, yet calm; it’s like a glossy, sweet treat, carefully wrapped and ready to be consumed.” studioroeper.com

“I love to inspire people,” says whirlwind event planner Lulu Powers, who gets a kick out of passing on the creative torch. “If you can teach someone to do something, and give them the confidence to do it, that’s great.” Opposite: A tablescape from a recent Powers-fueled event.

“Fun, colorful and chic.” They’re three words Los Angeles caterer and event planner Lulu Powers uses to describe her work and—as you’ll realize after spending just one minute with her—they’re a spot-on characterization of the woman herself. A bundle of creative energy, Powers always has a wealth of ideas on tap that she is quick to share with her clientele when dreaming up their latest fête. She gets it, she says, from “my parents, and especially

my mom. She has an almost instinctual knack for tablescapes; she can make anything look good.” Having segued from private chef-to-the-stars to high-profile event planner, mentor (Powers teaches private cooking classes) and book author, the inventive yet practical Powers—a favorite table setting involves personal notes etched across colorful constructionpaper placemats—tackles it all with the same carefree, no-hassle approach. “So many people are scared of entertaining, but it’s easy to be a good host,” she says. “You just need to make people feel special; that’s what they’ll remember.” lulupowers.com; 323.935.1337

TABLE MANNERS

LULU POWERS I got started… As a private chef when I was 15. I was working for cookbook author Sarah Leah Chase, who had a fantastic takeout shop on Nantucket (I spent my summers there), and when a client told her he needed a chef, she said, “Oh, one of those Powers girls can do it.”

Greatest influences: My mother and father, definitely. They were both really good cooks and incredible hosts, and they taught me that nothing you do in the kitchen is wrong. My mom always says, “Fear is like fire—you either cook with it or you let it burn you.” Can you imagine?

Favorite color: I love orange! It’s cheerful and goes with just about everything.

Go-to host gift: Either a batch of cookies, some new food product I’ve found that I can’t live without—I’ve recently discovered a great non-alcoholic beverage called 12NtM that you can mix with practically anything— or Peter Luger steak sauce. LUXE INTERIORS

to organizational products—now holds a mindfully edited selection of contemporary European furnishings, and it was his vision that turned things around. “The storage trade was dominated by mass merchants,” he says, “so we made the transition to reflect my love of all things modern.” Today, with over 100 different brands (including Global Views, Arteriors Home and BDI), Hold It is a one-stop shop for designers and clients alike. “We create layouts for lighting and rugs, and offer custom finishes and locally produced upholstery,” says McAllister. “Our capabilities are greater than those of a simple showroom.” And, after spotting a void in the marketplace, he’s forging ahead with an exclusive line of office furniture, Modernwork; it’s set to launch this fall. “I love the diversity of my job,” says McAllister. “It feeds my business and creative needs, and I love both.” holdithome.com; 619.295.6660

CURRENT EVENTS

MIKE M  ALLISTER Design icon: Alexander Calder. I’m most attracted to his paintings; the way he created depth and movement from colored objects inked or painted on paper or wood amazes me.

Greatest influence: Sir Terence Conran. He inspired me to enter this business.

Dream dinner party guest: Morten Georgsen. Ten years ago I had the opportunity to have dinner with him, and I’d like the opportunity to do that again. After all this time, I have a very different perspective on furniture design.

What do you collect? Watches. My favorite is a 24-hour pilot’s chronograph that belonged to my grandfather.

Extracurricular activity: Local philanthropy, like Chairs for Chair’ity, which we founded three years ago to raise funds for Make-A-Wish San Diego, and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research through men and women raising money and awareness by shaving their heads. I’ve gone under the blade every year! LUXE INTERIORS

“There is no line between work and play,” declares sculptor Elizabeth Turk. “I pull everything in my life into what I do; it’s the way I experience the world.” Opposite: A gold-on-paper screen from Japan’s Edo period. Turk finds the time inspiring, and has referenced it in her work.

STYLE MAKERS

For Elizabeth Turk, art and sculpture offer a way to converse with the world—both the seen and the unseen. “I like watching currents: a school of fish, a flock of birds, their gentle curve through space,” says Turk, whose work explores how the forces of nature might impact not only migratory patterns and tides, but also brain synapses, thought patterns

Balance, a marble work in two parts from Turk’s recent Cages series.

and ultimately, her art. To express these concepts in a block of marble, Turk chisels away up to 95 percent of the material to reveal the flows that lie hidden within. Although structural collapse is an ever-present danger, Turk looks to the organic for solutions, taking lessons from calcium carbonate structures, which remain strong despite being riddled with holes by microbes. “They have the same gravitational stresses that I have to deal with, and those structures survive,” says Turk, who sees her work less as a narrative and more as a frozen moment that represents many notions. “As a people we’re learning how to use icons,” she says, “so that we can speak to many ideas at once.” elizabethturksculptor.com

WHAT LIES BENEATH

ELIZABETH TURK My work is: Multi-dimensional. I look at everything, try to absorb it, then forget it all and work from intuition.

Why marble? I go back and forth. I have made things with other materials, but I’ve found the challenge of stone to be of particular interest now, because you have to look at what exists and be really honest with it, try to find its essential structural support and then just go for it, isolate it.

Current project: I’ve been messing around with larger-scale pieces; it’s a challenge. They’re more about design, and that’s harder for me to do. I haven’t really worked from an architectural planning sense before, so we’ll see.

Design period you find most engaging: I continually reference Japan’s Edo period. Visually it’s astounding. I like the screens because of the sense of time; experiencing time over a scroll is very different than doing so from a Western perspective. And the craftsmanship is just glorious. LUXE INTERIORS

KITCHEN + BATH

KITCHEN + BATH

MAIN COURSE IT USED TO BE THAT THE KITCHEN WAS A NECESSARY EVIL, A UTILITARIAN VEHICLE TO PRODUCE FAMILY DINNERS AND HOLIDAY MEALS. IN HOMES TODAY, THOUGH, THE KITCHEN IS THE MAIN ATTRACTION AS TRENDS TOWARD OPEN LAYOUTS POSITION THE SPACE AS THEIR STAR.

OPEN CALLS Just like an occasional argument is necessary to strengthen a relationship by creating a situation where compromise can flourish, the same is true with design. This elegant kitchen in Seattle is the perfect example of how two varying viewpoints can result in a unified vision that transcends both of the original ideas. Architects Amy Janof and Helen Hald served as mediators for a husband and wife who were after an “industrial look” and a “warm, feminine aesthetic,” respectively. “We worked very closely with them,” says Janof. “They weren’t in total agreement at the beginning of the project, but we were able to meld together what they both wanted—an industrial, raw ceiling and black-paned windows for the husband and a pretty Ochre chandelier and beautiful Calacatta marble countertops for the wife.” The result is a space at the heart of the home’s open floor plan that combines sleek, modern design with retro sensibilities to great effect.

“The kitchen was designed by thinking about how it was going to be used and how each activity was going to look while it was going on.”

Amy Janof, Janof Hald Architecture Seattle, WA

POINT OF VIEW IT WAS TRUE, FOR A LONG TIME, THAT THE ONLY WATER VIEWS YOU GOT WHILE IN THE BATHROOM WERE WHEN THE TUB WAS FULL. TODAY, HOWEVER, LARGER LAYOUTS AND OPENING UP THE SPACE TO THE OUTDOORS ESTABLISH A SPECIAL COMMUNION WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD.

ON LOCATION Though the homeowners of a newly constructed modern gem could have chosen to build their family retreat anywhere, they chose Montauk, New York, with its unpredictable weather but gorgeous landscape. In fact, their love of the sleepy, seaside town is such that it became the basis for everything architect Paul Masi incorporated into his ambitious design. No place in the home, though, is a better homage to the location than the master bathroom—with its sliding pocket doors that open to a deck with stunning water views on one end of the room and an outdoor shower that encourages moonlight reverie on the other. “Everything we did was in an effort to pick up on cues they loved so much about the area,” explains Masi. “The colors we used are ones that show up on the beach here; we even steamed the floor and spent a lot of time developing a salt solution to patina the ceiling to get it the perfect color of driftwood.”

“Homeowners should create a hierarchy of how they want to live and what’s most important to them and distill it all into simple, strong ideas.” Paul Masi, Bates Masi Architects LLC Sag Harbor, NY

He discovered his utopia in a Mediterranean-style house in Montecito, where his inaugural stride across the threshold convinced him that his search was over. Gazing through the foyer to the doors at the back of the house, “the first thing I saw were the mountains of Santa Barbara; it’s what sold me on the property,” says Rosen. “The view is breathtaking.” Still, Rosen set his final decision aside in order for architect and designer Dennis Gibbens—a longtime friend who’d worked on Rosen’s L.A. residence for years—to offer his seal of approval. “It’s a great property,” says Gibbens. “The grounds are extensive and private, and the unobstructed

room—was less so. “It needed a lot of work,” concedes Gibbens, who nonetheless gave the green light. “It had good bones and a nice layout.” Rosen closed on the house, then delivered his one non-negotiable point: He wanted to spend Thanksgiving at the newly acquired home, which meant that Gibbens would have less than five months to bring the property up to speed. “It was a lot of pressure,” recalls the architect, who assembled an ensemble cast of design professionals to make sure the deadline was met, including designer Cheryl Brantner, builder Jay Bruder and landscape designers Greg Sanchez and Peter Eberhard.

Adopting a staggered, three-prong approach that included a redefined landscape and a new pool, and the transformation of the cottage into a state-of-the-art screening room and guest quarters, the team tackled the main house first. “The changes there were less invasive, so we could finish them within our initial timeframe,” explains Gibbens. A more free-flowing floor plan was achieved by removing walls and combining smaller spaces into larger ones; the master suite wing was totally reconfigured; and the addition of architectural elements such as archways and moldings now lend a richness and depth of detail that was previously absent. “One of the biggest moves we made was placing a massive limestone fireplace in the living room,” Gibbens says of the statement-making piece imported from France. “It gives the room presence.” Brantner helped direct the interiors, guiding selections for materials, colors, finishes and fabrics. “It was important that the palette respect the property,” she says. “The interiors needed to be fresh and masculine, yet warm and nuanced.” So shades of cream, taupe, blue, gold and cognac were woven together and thrown across tailored pieces—including over 60 designed by Gibbens—with fuss-free comfort in mind. “It’s ultimately a retreat for Rick’s family and friends, so you have to be able to put your feet on the table,” says Brantner. “It’s not a precious environment.” Outside, Sanchez and Eberhard cultivated a plan that recalls classic Santa Barbara style. They opened up the views to the mountains by trimming back a grove of overgrown California coast oaks; added drought-tolerant underplantings and softscape; and removed existing tropical flora inappropriate to the region. “Those oaks are the dominating feature of the property,” says Sanchez, “so we designed around them.”

At the same time, Gibbens and Bruder were addressing the renovation of the cottage, as well as the construction of a pool and patio areas. “When we started excavating for the pool, we discovered a number of massive boulders,” says Bruder, who ended up using the quarried rock to clad the exterior of the screening house. “We thought, ‘The stone’s native; let’s keep it on the property.’ ” Gibbens and his team completed phase one just before Thanksgiving, layering in the last little details as Rosen’s guests arrived to enjoy the holiday. (The pool and screening room were finished the following year.) The project is a hit according to the homeowner, who delights in hosting long weekends and casual premieres. But it’s when he’s entertaining an audience of one that the house truly resonates: “I love it most when it rains,” says Rosen. “I sit by the fireplace in the living room and read, and I find that very peaceful.” L LUXE INTERIORS

world where conversation and calm are standard. Just beyond, a glass wall with an inset door leads into the open floor plan of the now modern—but not stark—residence. “When Fabienne bought the house, it was one-dimensional and had low ceilings,” says her Los Angeles-based architect and builder, Dominique Rocoffort de Vinnière. “It was like a shack,” adds Fabienne. “The previous owners had painted it brown inside and out!”

She knew, however, that the house could be something special, and so she and Laurent proceeded to purchase the residence for its sublime location and peaceful feeling. Fabienne and Rocoffort de Vinnière set about to restructure the house completely, paying special attention to architectural intrigue. So what had once been a small entry through a dark door with two rooms on either side is now a generous atrium-like area—a structural feature that floods the new entrance with light. The public spaces were opened up to each other, creating living, seating and dining areas with a column at their intersecting point. It serves as both a structural support and a visual separation. “We also raised the ceilings to 9 feet and covered the existing dark wood beams,” says Rocoffort de Vinnière. To complete the area’s transformation, a wall of windows was installed at the far end that fully retracts to let light in and open the view to the pool.

RED ALERT Imported French limestone in a rosy hue offsets cream stucco walls, giving the exterior of this home a warm French-Mediterranean feel. A breezeway separates the house from the garage and guest quarters above; a semicircular architectural feature gives the main structure its own identity.

P R I VAT E R O O M In the entry courtyard, a custom Walker Zanger tile-topped iron table and matching chairs set on Beaumaniere limestone offer a place to dine, rest and relax. Verdant landscaping affords the area even more privacy, while a retractable awning offers respite from the sun.

“I like open, loft-like spaces, says Fabienne, who did the interior design herself and chose simple pieces with clean lines to enhance rather than distract from the home’s newly created airiness. In the living room, a white L-shaped B&B Italia sofa embraces a low glass table with four pewter wheels. Abutting it, two square armchairs and a large ottoman set in front of a fireplace provide an intimate seating opportunity. Dark Brazilian cherrywood floors ground all the light and white.

Equally minimalist pieces can be seen in the adjacent dining room, where a mahogany table with metal legs is graced with a leather chair at either end and a pair of seats with curved-wood backs on both sides—all by Philippe Starck. Custom silk-and-wool rugs imported from Nepal further delineate the living and dining areas. The overhaul continued in the master bedroom, by raising ceilings to 14 feet and installing four 12-foot curved-steel-framed French doors that lead out to terraces. “The master suite is so Zen,” says Fabienne. “The curtains, the carpet, the bedding—they’re all off-white. It’s my favorite room in the house.” LUXE INTERIORS

Where a carport once stood now sits a garage with a guesthouse above. “We dug into the side of the site to create it,” says Rocoffort de Vinnière. “The guesthouse added elevation on one side of the breezeway, which balances out the rest of the home on the other.” A retaining wall planted with ample vegetation was installed behind the structure to create privacy. In addition to the guesthouse, two other bedrooms in the main dwelling provide generous visiting quarters. The peaceful and modest residence, which underwent its renovation years ago, has stood the test of time. “I am so grateful to Dominique,” says Fabienne, “because he taught me that if you choose to place authentic and natural materials in a house, it truly makes it timeless.” L

But after 20 years in the house,

the nest was empty and the homeowners—now retired and frequent fliers with homes in New York and Mexico—were ready to downsize. There was no question as to whom they would call to help them make the move. “We just love the simplicity of their design,” the wife says of June and Scott Louis Brown, a mother-and-son interior design team based in Bend, Oregon. “And we wanted them to take the same art-first approach in our new home.” INTERIOR DESIGN June and Scott Louis Brown, J.S. Indeed, the two so trust the designers that when they discovered this residence in Newport Coast, they brought the Browns in before making the acquisition to confirm whether or not some tweaks would render the

structure more to their liking. The Mediterranean-influenced house, with its tile roof and Palladian windows, was the stylistic antithesis of their former abode. “Even though it was traditional, we loved the grandeur and high ceilings of the new space,” the wife explains. “It’s also very private and since we travel so often, the gated aspect was a real plus.” The Browns made minor changes to the outside of the house, then focused their energies on simplifying the inside. Thus, wallpaper was replaced with whitewashed walls that provide a gallery-like backdrop for the art, and decorative lighting gave way to recessed fixtures that disappear into the architecture. unify the interiors and create cleaner lines. “The bones of the house were uncomplicated and we left them that way,” Scott says. “We wanted the art to be the standout.” Next came the layout, another of the couple’s concerns. Dana Point builder Jake Hiemstra was brought in to enclose a courtyard—which then connected the private rooms more directly to the living areas—and to open up a sitting room to the master bedroom, creating a larger, more cohesive space. “The idea was to make it look as if it had always been that way,” Hiemstra says. The new walnut flooring in the former courtyard, matched to existing floors elsewhere in the house, reflects that edict. Once the structural changes were complete, the art took center stage. “It dictated everything in the design,” says Scott. DIAMOND BACK The existing kitchen was left as is, save for a few decorative accessories. Custom cabinetry, in matte white lacquer with ribbed glass, echoes the pale palette used throughout. The backsplash is stainless steel in an embossed diamond quilted pattern; the countertops are black granite.

HEAD COUNT Two Michael Taylor concrete tables in the dining room were among the few existing pieces that made it into the new home unaltered. The gold-leaf Buddha head is Thai. Down the hall is an alabaster sculpture by the same Vietnamese artisan who created the poolside work.

deity, from the Muromachi period, which had been on longtime loan to New York’s Brooklyn Museum, became the focal point of the entry parlor. Another major piece, a Chinese golden paper screen from the 18th century, sets the tone in the dining room. In addition to modernizing the home’s traditional style, another challenge for the designers was to fit their clients’ existing furnishings into the house, which is 3,000 square feet smaller than their former residence. “We edited,” says Scott. “Everything else was re-covered, repurposed and reworked.”

SIMPLE ADDITION To the master bath—with its custom teak cabinets, limestone floors and Lefroy Brooks fittings—the designers added grass-cloth wallpaper from Kneedler Fauchère, nickel-plated sconces by Boyd and a 19th-century Navajo rug from the homeowners’ collection. In the dining room, for example, 14 klismos-style chairs with a pickled finish that Scott had designed for the previous house were given a darker, more formal lacquer to complement their new surroundings. Four French-inspired chairs, reupholstered in a zebra print and scattered throughout the house, give the quiet palette a dash of pattern. Scott welcomed working with predominantly existing furnishings on this project; only a new coffee table and a sofa had to be purchased. “It was fun to see their things transformed in a different environment,” says the designer, who is already thinking ahead. Indeed, the estate’s mini-resort style and waterfront location—perfect for viewing Fourth of July fireworks, air shows and the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights at Christmastime—combine to craft the consummate backdrop for entertaining family and friends. A key element is the sweeping great room with bifold doors that open onto the pool area. “We can fit 20 people in that room,” says Pinsonneault, who lives in the house with her land developer husband, Joe, and their two children. “Some can be watching television; some can be in the sunning area overlooking the pool.”

Family activities even figured into her design of the 14-foot-long kitchen island with cutting boards on either end. “We have a big tradition of baking nearly 1,000 holiday cookies every December,” says Pinsonneault. “When we did that big island, that’s what I had in mind.” But it’s the sprawling deck on the second floor that offers a special wow factor for guests. With stunning views of the San Diego skyline, the area is outfitted with heaters so it is usable year-round; there is a stairway leading down to the pool, a table that seats 12, a pizza oven and a fireplace for making s’mores. Of course, pulling that together on a leak-friendly flat roof required deft construction by builder Harry Jackman, Pinsonneault’s father, and a liberal application of waterproof coating. But Jackman is used to meeting his daughter’s meticulous standards. “She knows more than the average client,” he says. “So you know what she wants right away—it’s not a guessing game.” What Pinsonneault wanted also involved packing a lot of living space, including a separate carriage house, onto a couple of Coronado’s notoriously small lots. No problem for pater Jackman, who employed space-enhancing tricks, such as installing a turntable in the garage for fuss-free automobile entry and exit right at the street, to make the most of what’s within the site’s property lines.

to function, but also in relation to style. “I definitely like casual elegance with a side of whimsy,” Pinsonneault says. Her adventures across the seas have honed her eye for French and English pieces and stoked her love of chinoiserie, which accents much of the home, particularly the master bedroom, where tone-on-tone sea-grass wallpaper blends softly with a chinoiserie-patterned bedspread, rug and bureau. “Coronado has an island feel, but I wanted to live in a house that is ageless and enduring,” says the blissed-out homeowner. “Something you can look at in 20 years and not really know when it was built.” L
