Newsletter Thursday, 28th March 2013 Dear Parent/carer The Mission for Sam campaign continues to engage our students and staff. Over £250 was raised when the Barclays Premier League Trophy visited the school on Monday and as a result of the visit an article appeared on Tuesday’s edition of The News. I have just been informed that Alverstoke Infant School had an Easter Bonnet day and raised an impressive £248 for the appeal. Orchard Lea Junior School raised £140. I would like to wish staff, governors, students and parents a very Happy Easter and I look forward to welcoming you back to the summer term on Monday, 15th April 2013. Nadine Powrie, Headteacher MORE SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS .. HOUNSDOWN SCHOOL— ANNUAL SCIENCE QUIZ As part of STEM Week two teams of 4 students competed in the Annual Hounsdown Science Quiz. Neville Lovett was represented by two teams. In each team there was one student from each year group. There were five rounds of competition, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science in the News and a KS3 only round. It was a tight race to the finish with two teams finishing equal first. As there could only be one winner, the overall winner was decided by a count back of the number of rounds each team won over each other. There was a nervous wait as the results were delivered. One of the Neville Lovett teams had won by winning three rounds out of five against Applemore’s two rounds. On returning to his old school, Mr Patel was delighted to see Neville Lovett take the trophy home. The winning team included Ben Wallace-Stock, Leah Ilsley, Talia Reed and Sophie Rae. Congratulations also go to Lauren Conway, Andrew Pearson, Ross Tinney and Fred Street who’s team placed 5th out of a total of ten teams. Ben Wallace-Stock – Team Captain of the winning team REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS Parents are reminded that it is very important that the school has up to date details regarding home contact information. The school office should be notified in writing of any changes to telephone numbers, addresses and emails. EASTER REVISION/COURSEWORK SESSIONS During the Easter Break targeted students have been invited to attend revision and coursework sessions. Letters have been sent home to these students. Parents are asked to support the school by encouraging these students to attend so they attain the best possible outcomes for the GCSEs in the summer. Thank you for your support . Newsletter Thursday, 28th March 2013 Governor News Governors met on Tuesday to discuss the progress to date of the move to academy status. You will have seen from the letters sent home via students on Wednesday, that the decision was taken at that meeting to convert as a stand alone Academy. On Thursday, 3 of our governors attended the HIRA breakfast and would like to thank the students and staff for inviting us to attend such a lovely event. The parents who attended were delighted with the morning. Elizabeth Webb, Chair of Governors STEM Week—IBM Blue Fusion Blue fusion team Laura Vickery, Sam Traves, Alex Buck, Jack Hicks, Rebecca Thomas, Melissa Taylor crossed swords with the brightest graduates IBM had to offer this week. Competing against the game programmers and other schools from across the county, they showed outstanding teamwork, communication and leadership skills in order to complete the 6 computer based challenges. It was a very close contest, we came a respectable 2nd with 481 points (beating Cams Hill). Laura and Melissa both commented "we would recommend this day to people next year, we had a great time and learnt loads" STEM Week—Ian Dunne On Monday we welcomed Ian Dunne to the school. He tours schools with his own brand of Science shows and the theme when he visited us was Magic and Science. Our students enjoyed performances during the day and the evening session was reserved for primary age pupils. Following the success of this visit we hope that Mr Dunne will be able to return with more shows in the future. Mission for Sam Appeal Mr Collins, Mr Edwards and Mr Herington will have their heads shaved after Easter (second week back) if they can raise £500 in sponsorship. If they reach £1,000 then will have a full leg wax as well! Please pledge money to this cause as soon as possible. Paralympian Ian Rose Ian visited the school to work with selected groups of our sporting students. His talks and workshops during the day were inspirational and we thank Ian for spending time with us. Ian led a whole school gifted and talented assembly. He then did mentoring sessions with Year 9 and 10 girls regarding raising standards. The day ended with practical Judo sessions for Gifted and Talented PE students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.
