What was a hurdle for your business growth and how did you overcome it? Back in the wholesale days, cash flow was a huge problem. Everything had to be paid for up front, yet it could take up to a year for boutiques to pay us, even on their 30 day terms. Re-investing season after season without having been paid for the last time was gruelling, so we changed our business formula entirely and turned it all around. How important is being agile and ‘working on the go’ as a business owner?

Could you tell us a bit about your business? Watson X Watson is a proudly Australian fashion label that creates core pieces for every woman’s wardrobe - those items you constantly throw on year after year and just can’t live without. My sister and I both had plenty of experience in the fashion industry, so when we finally started our own label, we knew exactly what we wanted our brand DNA to be - sophisticated and wellmade - products that make women feel beautiful. Our business has evolved over the years; we’ve gone from selling wholesale to boutiques, to selling

exclusively through our own physical and online stores. A change that makes us so incredibly happy. Watson X Watson has developed a very loyal following, partly thanks to the fact that we only source the best materials available. The quality is stunning and absolutely built for longevity. What are the challenges of being a fashion and retail based business? I find specifically in fashion retail, that the service factor is often missing. Yes, women come into our boutiques looking for amazing clothing, but they also want styling advice. So, we hire women with styling backgrounds to assist them – women who know how to dress and flatter a body shape. We also listen to our customers and help

them find a wardrobe to suit their particular lifestyle. Opening our own boutiques was the best thing we’ve ever done. We now create collections that flow and connect to each other effortlessly. Our products are timeless, and certainly worth investing in. Serving our clients directly means instant and valuable feedback, so we genuinely understand what our customers want and need. It also means we can create a beautiful, inspiring environment for them to shop in – decorated with fresh flowers and scented candles. It’s highly personalised and we build wonderful relationships with our customers to learn about their wishes. It almost goes without saying that we place an extremely high priority on building the right team to serve our customers. We also reinvest in our product to keep

I remember being on holiday, reflecting on my life and it suddenly hit me - I knew without a doubt that it was time to work for myself. When I returned home, I sold both my investment properties and put my entire life savings into starting Watson X Watson. Backing your dream like that may seem like a huge risk but we worked so hard to create this beautiful brand and it’s paid off. We’ve created something that we’re immensely proud of. When women come up to me and say “I felt so amazing in my dress”, or “my husband told me how wonderful I looked” –

that’s when I know why we do what we do. Helping women feel more confident and more beautiful is what I love most about working in fashion. Who is in your support network that helped you get to where you are today? There are many. My sister and I come from a really hard-working family who have always supported our big dreams. Big brands in the industry have always believed in us as well. We’ve aligned with brands like Tiffany & Co, La mer, Jo Malone, Laurent Perrier and Nike - so many amazing people in the industry supported us from the beginning and believed that we would achieve big things. I’ve also got an amazing husband who is very business minded and he’s always there to bounce ideas around with and support us in the next business move. Finally, we’re so grateful for all the women who shop locally and support our brand. It honestly feels like an honour to do what we love. For that we are eternally grateful.

Every day is a constant juggle for me. I’m a mum, a wife, a manager of multiple stores and people, and constantly in meetings with suppliers. Sometimes it feels like everyone wants my attention at the same time. I have to be very agile to maintain all areas of the business - my phone rings constantly and I need to stay contactable. Missing calls means slowing down business or missing out on sales altogether. What are your thoughts on the Yes Business platform, and how do you think it can benefit small businesses? I’ve had an amazing business partner throughout the journey, and I’m so grateful for that. But even with my sister by my side, I found starting a business quite isolating. There were plenty of days where I felt unsupported or overwhelmed. When things went wrong or got tough, I didn’t have colleagues to bounce ideas off, which can be really helpful.
