Message to Our Members I bet you have a favorite Sesame Street memory. Maybe it’s your own, or one you shared with your children or grandchildren? Although it’s almost impossible to choose a favorite Muppet, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster and The Count are the ones that make me smile the most. For 50 years, kids have experienced pure joy while they were learning from Sesame Street. As The Count would say, “50… ah…ha…ha!” If you’re a PBS KIDS family, be sure to check out our new Family Membership. For a monthly gift of $10, you’ll get discounts to child friendly attractions in Nebraska, books based on our PBS KIDS series and so much more. Consider giving a membership as a gift during the holidays! This month, we’re so proud to feature outstanding young representatives from communities all across Nebraska during our coverage of the state high school championships for volleyball and football, along with an all-state concert by musicians and vocalists. Do you like musicals? Every Friday night this month, Great Performances features some of Broadway’s best! It’s a great lineup with 42nd Street, The King and I, Red, Much Ado About Nothing and Kinky Boots. (See pg. 14.)

Masterpiece will have 50 candles on its birthday cake next year. To celebrate, the drama series will be part of our first group travel experience! In August 2020, NET supporters like you are invited to travel with us to London where you’ll experience the city’s bustling streets, celebrated monuments and sophisticated dining. You’ll also travel across the countryside on a ride that includes a visit to the world of Downton Abbey, with full access to Highclere Castle and the grounds. How cool will it be to actually see the castle featured in the series? (See more on pg. 18.) Thank you for providing financial support that enables us to bring Nebraska high quality children’s programs, news from around the state and the world, plus championship sports, arts and culture. Without your donations, we simply could not offer thousands of hours of radio and television programs, community events and online educational resources for teachers, parents and caregivers. With appreciation,

Debbie Hamlett

Assistant General Manager, Development & Marketing Proud Member

ON THE COVER

Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Premieres Sunday, Nov. 17 6 p.m. CT on NET It’s an event 50 years in the making! We’re celebrating the world’s most iconic street with all our furry friends and some very special guests. This star-studded primetime special includes actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sterling K. Brown, singer Patti LaBelle and many more! To mark the special anniversary, the whole Sesame Street neighborhood gathers together to take a photo under the iconic Sesame Street sign – but the sign is missing! While Elmo and friends search for the sign, Gordon-Levitt takes a look back at 50 years of Sesame Street memories, and everyone soon realizes that Sesame Street isn’t just a sign or a street. It’s a place where everybody is welcome, learning is fun, and all kinds of monsters, birds and humans come together to form lifelong friendships. Wondering how to get to Sesame Street? Don’t worry, you’ll find it’s closer than you think.

ETHICS AND THE MEDIA:

18,262 SUNNY DAYS & STILL COUNTING IT ALL STARTED 50 YEARS AGO. Sesame Street made its television debut on Nov. 10, 1969, with a colorful community of monsters, birds, grouches and humans. It became a place where everyone counts, bringing people together from main streets to busy streets, and streets everywhere in between. Against the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement and the War on Poverty, Sesame Street founders Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrissett began a daring experiment. Could television – an emerging technology at the time – be used to educate kids?

With a diverse cast, a researchbased curriculum for schools and instantly iconic characters, Sesame Street set out to do just that, and changed children’s television forever. The first episode of Sesame Street opened with Gordon showing a child around the neighborhood, telling her she’d “never seen a street like Sesame Street.” The show was an instant hit with children and parents alike, and by the end of the first season, Sesame Street had reached millions of preschoolers.

I loved this show as I was four when it debuted. So hard to say what my favorite moment was. Not That Easy Being Green? Roosevelt Franklin? Oscar the Grouch? And, of course, Bert & Ernie. I cherish the memories of those lessons. George Gundelfinger Sesame Street fan Hastings 16

Sesame Street is the longest-running children’s show in American television history.

Travel back in time from the secret museum as Xavier, his sister Yadina and their friend Brad meet a hero from history! In the newest PBS KIDS series, the three time travelers meet real-life historical figures when they were kids – like Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson and more. Each adventure helps young viewers connect the character traits that made these historical figures heroes and those same qualities within themselves, helping them discover that they, too, can change the world! DONOR ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO WATCH, LEARN AND GIVE Near Cairo, Neb., Bill and Shari Hadenfeldt run a family farm that has passed from generation to generation. Today, Bill, his son and several of their older grandchildren work together to manage the diversified operation which includes row crops, alfalfa hay and cattle they raise through the feedlot stage. Shari helps out on the farm when needed, too, and works as a medical transcriptionist. As a farmer, Bill relies on agricultural news from Market to Market and Market Journal on NET, and also enjoys Big Red Wrap-Up, FRONTLINE, Nightly Business Report and This Old House. Shari watches cooking shows on our CREATE Channel and the Saturday night Britcoms – As Time Goes By and Keeping Up Appearances. She’s also a fan of high school sports championships and Husker volleyball. The couple loves anything produced by filmmaker Ken Burns. The Hadenfeldts have generously supported NET since the 1990s. The past four years, in addition to their regular annual gift, the couple has made an endof-year gift to support the programs they rely on for farm news and entertainment. “We were watching a fundraiser and since we watch a lot of NET we decided we would join because we’d hate to see it go away,” explained Shari. 22

When their son and two daughters were small, Shari said they watched Sesame Street, and today several of their seven grandchildren watch PBS KIDS programs. Shari said she talks about what she’s seen on NET with friends and co-workers and encourages them to watch and donate. Recently, she’s been talking about the NET News documentary And the Floods Came: Nebraska 2019 (netNebraska.org/ floods). Nearby their son’s pasture, a neighbor lost cattle from his herd and one of Bill and Shari’s pastures sustained flood damage. They both lost fencing and had damage from sand, but realize others lost much more. “I tell people to watch the show, that they don’t know what they are missing,” she said.

A Charitable End to the Year

Thanks to generous support from members like you, in the last year we’ve broadcast nearly 52,500 hours of the television and radio programs you enjoy every day, plus provided 24/7 access to our outstanding online and mobile content. As 2019 comes to a close, please know there is still time to make a tax-deductible, year-end gift to NET to support our work. Gifts of all sizes are to support production of documentaries, news and local series and to purchase the PBS and NPR programs you trust. And, you can increase the impact of your year-end gift with a matching gift. Many companies show their support for public television and public radio by matching employee donations. Not sure if your company will match your gift?

NET is celebrating 65 years as Nebraska’s public media network. We signed on Nov. 1, 1954, as one of the first stations on the air in the U.S., and a pioneer in public television broadcasting. The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.
