Message to Our Members May brings beautiful flowers, glorious sunny skies and exciting new programs from NET! An annual favorite, the National Memorial Day Concert celebrates its 30th broadcast this year. The American Forces Network uses seven satellites to provide multiple television and stereo audio services to more than 1,000 outlets in more than 175 countries and U.S. territories, and on board U.S. Navy ships. Our new local productions this month include: Savor: Nebraska Craft Wine, Final Cut: Filmmakers Showcase, and Good, Healthy Life. Of special note, we’re pleased to see in the PBS national schedule the 2004 NET-produced documentary about Emma Goldman for American Experience. At the end of May, we’ll be headed out for our semi-annual On the Road with NET tour to include stops in Alliance, Brule, Chadron, Gering, Lewellen, Mitchell, Ogallala, Scottsbluff and Sidney. Be sure to drop by one of our many events including: tapings of two Friday LIVE radio shows; five PBS KIDS Ready Jet Go! family screening events and character visits; premiere screenings of another new NET documentary Small

Town Cops; plus community Town Talks and how-to video streaming workshops where you can learn how to access our programs on NET Passport and streaming devices. The past few months were devastating for our friends and neighbors across the state who were affected by blizzards and flooding. Our hearts and minds are with you as you rebuild your homes, lives and communities. NET News provided significant coverage of these historical events not only locally, but nationally as the stories unfolded. Our mission is to bring attention to conversations and stories that might not otherwise be heard. This is what you expect from your public media station and something we’re proud to do every day. Your steadfast support makes this important coverage and so much more possible. With appreciation,

Debbie Hamlett

Assistant General Manager, Development & Marketing Proud NET Member

PREMIERES

Monday, May 6 8 p.m. CT on NET

Local, independent filmmakers are creating art for the big screen at venues such as Omaha’s new Dundee Peggy Payne Theater, named after the mother of Academy Award-winning director Alexander Payne. It’s the second venue for Film Streams, an Omaha nonprofit promoting film as an art form.

Film Streams is engaging new audiences with local filmmaking in the revitalized theater – curating a local showcase to find the best independent films produced in the Nebraska/Iowa region. Final Cut: Filmmakers Showcase tells the story of the contest, blending short films, dramatic clips and filmmaker interviews with a private look at the renovation process that turned a shuttered building into a high-tech urban community theater. The NET documentary premieres with a dramatic film about a pregnant bride produced by a Holdrege, Neb., talent; two short films by an Omaha World Herald visual journalist; an inspiring film by an Omahan that offers a child’s perspective on modern day slavery in Haiti; and an animated feature about a dark Irish folklore from a Bennington, Neb., filmmaker.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Dundee Theater opened in Omaha in 1925 during the silent movie era and later served as a venue for popular Hollywood fare, including its historic 118-week run of The Sound of Music in the mid-1960s.

Focusing on the health and well-being of all Nebraskans! Thursday, May 16 7 p.m. CT on NET World

Doctors call prediabetes and high blood pressure “silent killers” because they often occur with few or even no symptoms. Only 10 percent of adults living with prediabetes know they have it, and nearly half of all Americans have high blood pressure and don’t know it. Both conditions make it more likely that patients will develop heart disease or suffer a stroke, but they can frequently be managed with changes in diet, lifestyle and sometimes medication. This episode of Good, Healthy Life offers helpful information for Nebraskans who want to understand their blood sugar and blood pressure readings – and prevent serious complications by working hard to stay healthy. New programs air quarterly on NET World. This series is sponsored in part by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska.

Your morning will sound a little different beginning Monday, May 6. NPR’s Morning Edition debuts fresh, new theme music that will be a recognizable soundtrack for the popular radio program. “As we look to draw in new listeners to NPR programming and grow public radio’s presence on multiple platforms, a new theme will better reflect what Morning Edition is today, and attract listeners who have yet to discover the leading news magazine’s dynamic mix of engaging, informative, and often surprising stories about today’s world,” said NPR’s Chief Marketing Officer, Meg Goldthwaite. The new suite of music incorporates live instrumentation into sounds that are warm, fresh, weighted, smart, modern, energetic and human. Inspired by the work of composer BJ Leiderman, the new music references the historic theme. NPR collaborated on the composition with Man Made Music, experts in the field who have created some of today’s most recognizable sounds.

BEGAN AS A BEDTIME STORY

BE KIND! New Episodes May 13 – 16

Arthur, D.W. and their friends learn about civility, honesty and compassion.

Did You Know?

Arthur appeared as a guest in hand puppet form in a 1999 episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Fred Rogers himself appeared (as an aardvark) in two Arthur episodes.

Arthur is about growing up, exploring the world and finding your place. The star of the PBS KIDS series is bespectacled eight-year-old aardvark Arthur Read who shows kids how to deal with real childhood challenges such as homework, teachers and bullies. Children’s book author Marc Brown created Arthur and the other Elwood City characters based on bedtime stories he told his son, Tolon. Aimed at kids ages 4-8 and told from a child’s point of view, Arthur premiered on PBS in 1996 as one of the first ongoing animated television programs based on a book series. Arthur encourages reading and writing, and positive social skills. Teachers, parents and caregivers can find resources, lesson plans and activities related to the series on net.pbslearningmedia.org, and kids can visit pbskids.org/arthur for fun and educational activities.

In the very first season of Sesame Street, Grover, the cuddly blue creature everyone loves, was actually brownish-green.

PREMIERES Thursday, May 2 8:30 p.m. CT on NET

Did You Know?

In 1985, former State Senator Sandra Scofield of Chadron introduced a legislative bill that allowed for the establishment of wineries in Nebraska by increasing production of wine from 200 gallons a year to 50,000 gallons.

Some wine enthusiasts believe good wine only comes from California or Europe, but Nebraska producers have joined a growing group of Midwest vintners who are turning that idea on its head. The new NET documentary Savor: Nebraska Craft Wine uncorks the story of an ancient industry that is flourishing in Nebraska. With nearly 40 wineries in the state now, the impact on our economy has soared as producers in all areas of Nebraska pioneer their brands. Savor: Nebraska Craft Wine explores the history of Nebraska wine making, the people who make it their life’s work and how to pair meals with the state’s best bottles. The documentary also offers a taste of the industry from Niobrara Valley Vineyards where wine pairs with cattle ranching, as well as Deer Springs Winery in Lincoln and James Arthur Vineyards in Raymond, one of the first vineyards in the state.

“Any fool can grow grapes in the Napa Valley, but it takes real skill to grow them here in Nebraska."

Paul Read Professor of Agronomy & Horticulture University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Saturdays beginning May 11 11 a.m. CT on NET In his senior year of high school in Fremont, Neb., J Schwanke’s psychology teacher told the class that one of them would be on television and he thought, “That’s going to be me!”

ALL NEW!

Schwanke’s prediction was correct. With his newly-minted public television series, Life in Bloom, he will be on television – right here in Nebraska. The lifestyle series about flower arrangement, design and instruction premieres Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. CT on NET. For more than 125 years, Schwanke’s family operated Green’s Greenhouses in Fremont. His great-grandfather started the business in 1896 and began growing palm trees on the seven-acre property. “They were the traditional old, glass greenhouses that were dug down into the soil. There were rose houses, carnation houses and mum houses,” he explained. As the business passed from generation to generation, the Schwanke family became icons in the flower industry. And, although he lives in Michigan now, he says flowers and Nebraska have always been part of his life. “If you pull a plant out of the ground, some of its roots still stay there. I think that when I come back, I feel those roots are still there.”

Flowers are the “hook” for the new show. “Life in Bloom helps people include flowers in their lives,” he said. “Each week we feature a specific flower. We tell trivia and visit flower farms. We do projects, crafts and arrange flowers. We cook with flowers and we make a beverage that somehow has flowers involved.” Schwanke is pleased his show is taking root in Nebraska. “PBS is my favorite channel. When life’s just a little too much, I retreat there because I know I’m safe.” He’s hoping NET viewers pour a cup of coffee, relax and learn how to live a life filled with flowers and happiness as they watch the show. “You don’t ever ruin someone’s day by giving them flowers,” he said.

SUPPORT

WHAT YOU ENJOY ON NET There are many ways to support the NET programming you enjoy every day on radio and television. Many people designate a bequest or planned gift to the NET Foundations which invest unrestricted funds that support general programming. Unrestricted gifts allow NET flexibility to apply funds where they are needed most. Some donors prefer that their gift be directed for a specific purpose. NET’s restricted funds are allocated to programs and projects that fall with in defined categories. Currently, there are three restricted funds – the Ron Hull Fund for Telling Nebraska Stories, the Cheloha Education Fund and the Sports Partners Fund. The interest generated by these funds is used to support specific NET programs in the area of emphasis. The principle remains intact. Making a planned gift to either an existing restricted or unrestricted fund, or creating a new fund to support a specific part of NET’s mission can be a generous way to support your public media network. Devoted Member Loves Radio and TV Mary Ostergard of Gothenburg teased that she’s been in Nebraska longer than public television or radio, but when they began here, she was an instant fan of both. Mary watched television first, enjoying programs such as Backyard Farmer and Masterpiece, and later Antiques Roadshow, NATURE and NET’s Nebraska Stories series. She discovered radio when she was fixing up a rental house in town. Now she has NET on the radio all day. (It was playing in the background during our interview.) “I love the music! And the news is as straight as it can be,” she said. “It’s hard to switch off the radio and turn NET on the television at night.” Mary says Nebraska may be known for its Huskers, but it should be known for NET. “It’s unifying for the state. Keeps us all together and on the same page.” Mary and her late husband Jack ran a cow-calf operation in the Nebraska Sandhills north of Gothenburg for more than 40 years. Jack enjoyed sports on NET and became a gifted cowboy poet after he retired from the ranch.
