MARCH 2021 1
Message to Our Members Is there anything lovelier than the season of spring and new beginnings? After a long, snowy, frigid winter – we think not! Fresh colorful buds are blooming, animals are emerging and life across the prairie and in your backyard is awakening once again. We’ve got a fresh crop of exciting new programs for you this month. Dolly Parton & Friends: 50 Years at the Opry and Tower of Power: 50 Years of Funk and Soul take you to opposite ends of the spectrum with music genres that are far apart, but still iconic. Dolly Parton sings some of her biggest country hits and Tower of Power follows the creation of a brassy fusion of soul, funk and jazz known as the Oakland Stroke. Want more variety? Complete your music library with soprano Renée Fleming in concert at the Met and Omaha native Andrew Rannells performing Broadway and pop favorites at Lincoln Center. This month also spotlights the accomplishments of women. You’ll find inspiring stories about Susan Stamberg, a ‘founding mother’ of NPR, as well as American Masters films about literary icon Flannery O'Connor and modern dance pioneer Twyla Hansen. Meet a hero that lived closer to home in the NET documentary Sharpie: Born to Fly,
which follows a female pilot who grew up near Ord and soared to new heights in aviation. America’s Test Kitchen 20th Anniversary Special will make your mouth water as the chefs whip up favorite recipes as chosen by viewers and tell behind-the-scenes stories. And, learn more about our planet as Sir David Attenborough explores a crisis of biodiversity and the science of climate change. Looking ahead to April, watch for the return of Backyard Farmer, as well as the three-part series Hemingway, produced by filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. It’s an intimate portrait of the iconic literary figure, exploring his visionary work and turbulent life. All of this and so much more is available to you and every Nebraskan. Watch, listen and click for a wide variety of programming and information curated just for you. Thank you for your ongoing support!

During the 19th century, Nebraska was known as part of the Great American Desert because those migrating through didn’t realize there was a veritable ocean flowing beneath their feet. Nebraska sits atop the Ogallala Aquifer, the largest aquifer in the High Plains System, which covers most of the Great Plains. Nebraska: The Great American Water Machine explores water’s role as the lifeblood of the state. The new NET Connects program examines the relationship between groundwater and surface water, how they are connected and consumed, and how we can work together to preserve, protect and manage our water for future generations. Produced in partnership with the Nebraska State Irrigation Association

Celebrated in March, Women’s History Month recognizes women’s contributions to our history, culture and society. The timeline of women’s history stretches back to the founding of the United States – from Abigail Adams and Susan B. Anthony to Sojourner Truth and Rosa Parks. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The next year, Congress passed a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month.

Season 2 Premiere Friday, March 26 9:30 p.m. CT on NET To complement its popular cross-platform CANVAS arts series, PBS NewsHour curates the best modern arts and culture reporting in Beyond the Canvas. According to the creators, it’s a broadcast for a new audience. The series focuses on universal themes including finding your passion, making a change, creating a new world and getting that big break – as well as how music and art can connect us.

Since the season one premiere last July, Beyond the Canvas has profiled cultural creators from the legendary Bruce Springsteen to the award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda. The debut happened during the pandemic, when live performances and public entertainment were not possible. The stories are designed to be reminders of the importance of art and culture in our lives. Beyond the Canvas is hosted by PBS NewsHour senior national correspondent and substitute anchor Amna Nawaz. “Every episode is a collection of stories. So, people can process them in a slightly different way,” said Nawaz.
ART CAN LEAD TO ACHIEVEMENT Creative activities are part of the building blocks of child development. When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. Studies also show a correlation between art and other achievement. A report by Americans for the Arts found young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children. Preschool programs often emphasize the use of scissors because it develops the dexterity children will need for writing. For very young children, making art – or just talking about it – provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes and actions.

netNebraska.org/social Evelyn Haller remembers her very first donation in support of public television. It was the mid-1960s, and she was living near San Francisco, watching KQED. “I loved watching Julia Child, and the thank-you gift was three carbon steel knives from France that I still use,” she said. Today, she makes monthly gifts to NET as a Sustaining Star member who enjoys television and radio. “Not only do I deeply appreciate the products, but I am glad that PBS, NPR and NET provide jobs for ethical, creative people.” Evelyn still enjoys Julia Child cooking programs, as well as travel programs from Rick Steves. She watches FRONTLINE, NOVA, Nature and the PBS NewsHour. On radio, she listens to The Moth Radio Hour and appreciates the “free exchange of information” on news programs such as On Point. “Currently, I am enjoying All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece.”
and later her doctorate in English from Emory University in Atlanta. One of her two sons lives in her native Chicago, and the other in Los Angeles. She was living in Lincoln when she agreed to what she thought would be a short-term appointment at Doane University in Crete, Neb. “I stayed for 49 years,” she laughed.
AN EARLY GIFT INSPIRES A LIFETIME OF SUPPORT With the radio tuned to NET, Evelyn spends much of her day listening to classical music. “As a child I remember an FM station from Chicago that played classical music, as well as a neighbor in our apartment building who played music from Swan Lake and danced a bit of ballet,” she said. Evelyn earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Barat College near Chicago
netNebraska.org/superkids 22
At Doane, Evelyn traveled with colleagues and students to places such as Japan, England and Egypt. In Rome, a tip from Rick Steves came in handy. “He explained the details of remarkable, but littleknown daily showings of the St. Ignatius statue,” she said. Evelyn hopes to travel again when it’s safe, rescheduling a trip to Greece and spending more time in Chicago. For now, she’s watching, listening and supporting NET. “It’s rewarding to make a contribution to the common good.”
