Nebraska’s Barn Quilt Culture March 9 on NET

MARCH 2017 1

Message to Our Members Happy 150th birthday, Nebraska! This month we celebrate our state’s sesquicentennial and all the things that make us proud to be Nebraskans. When I moved to Lincoln a little more than 3 years ago, I had friends and family who wondered why Nebraska. My short answer was simple. Why not? Aside from NET’s stellar national reputation, I saw the state as a hidden gem, with much more to offer than first meets the eye. I knew Nebraska certainly didn’t deserve a “flyover state” stereotype. It’s been a true pleasure to explore everything Nebraska has to offer – history, culture, arts, nature and genuine people. And, although I’ve logged many miles around the state, I’ve learned quite a bit by watching and listening to NET. During March and throughout the rest of 2017, NET will showcase Nebraska in a variety of ways. Watch for NEBRASKA 150 programs from our archives – they are really “oldies, but goodies.” You’ll also see and hear more of our Nebraska History Moments on television and radio. They highlight inventions, people, places and some things even longtime Nebraskans might not know about their own state. (Did you know the honeybee is the official state insect?) Two new NET programs debut this month. First, Nebraska artist Todd A. Williams puts brush to canvas, and with stunning artistry captures the unique history of

our 93 counties in Painting Nebraska’s Legacy. And, Patchwork on the Plains: Nebraska’s Barn Quilt Culture explores art of a different sort – the kind that adorns barns. You’ll find out how barn quilts preserve history, honor veterans and tell family stories. I’ve saved perhaps our biggest news for last. On March 1, NET launches our fourth TV channel – NET PBS KIDS! For generations, NET has offered kids programs that nurture a life-long love of learning. The new NET PBS KIDS channel builds on that mission, and it’s designed to meet the needs of today’s kids and families. The new 24/7 service allows every child, especially those at risk, to access high-quality programs whenever and wherever they watch media. Commitment to children is one of NET’s core values – and another reason to be proud that you support our work. Thank you!

NET SALUTES THE NEBRASKA SESQUICENTENNIAL Nebraska’s 150th birthday is March 1, and it’s quite a milestone!

NET takes pride in documenting our great state. Visit netNebraska.org/150 to watch all of the Nebraska 150 History Moments and previews of NET’s archive programs. You can also see images of signed and dated prints from Painting Nebraska’s Legacy artist Todd A. Williams – available with your pledge of support for NET.

NEBRASKA 15O HISTORY MOMENT

THE BLIZZARD OF 1888

With blinding snow, biting winds and temperatures dipping to 40 degrees below zero, the Blizzard of 1888 hit Nebraska hard. The devastating storm struck in the middle of the day so children were trapped at school. In Ord, teacher Minnie Freeman became a hero, saving her 13 lucky students by tying their hands together and leading them to a farm a half mile away. Freeman’s bravery became national news and inspired a song about the fateful storm. Nebraska 150 History Moments on NET are produced with support from Humanities Nebraska.

In a project tied to Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial, artist Todd A. Williams is painting the history of his home state. He’s traveling from border to border to each of Nebraska’s 93 counties, where he’s painting at least one picture that represents the area. Williams’ works will become part of the new NET documentary Painting Nebraska’s Legacy, and bring attention to the state’s natural beauty, its native and pioneer past, and its promise for the future. 3

Serving Nebraska with Four Television Channels NET is Nebraska’s largest classroom, largest stage and a trusted window to the world. Every day, we fulfill our essential mission to our television viewers – providing unique programming for engaged, intelligent citizens, not simply consumers. It was the original mission of public television to be free and available to every American, regardless of where they live or what they can afford. NET continues that noncommercial, public-service mission with our three television channels – NET, NET World and NET Create and beginning March 1, we are adding a new, fourth channel – NET PBS KIDS!

NET PBS KIDS offers the nation’s most trusted children’s programming 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week.* The channel will be entirely devoted to early learning and school readiness with programs such as Curious George, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Ready Jet Go! and Splash and Bubbles. NET PBS KIDS will also be available online at pbskids.org/video (click on LIVE TV) and on the PBS KIDS video app. (See page 21 for the NET PBS KIDS program schedule.)

NET’s four channels are available to you free over-the-air. Visit netNebraska.org/tvchannels for more details about how to watch in your area. *Check local listings

To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters Sunday, March 26 at 8 p.m. CT on NET This all-new, one-night television event tells the true story of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte, who faced a bleak future as a family of unmarried women. Unable to rely on their alcoholic brother or near-blind father, they worked as governesses to often unruly children. This is the story of how — against all odds — their genius for writing romantic novels was recognized in a male-dominated, 19th-century world. 20

The 4 R’s of Planned Giving

You can be part of the future of NET and public broadcasting in Nebraska. Planned gifts to NET allow future generations to be enriched and educated by public television and radio. But there are also benefits for you!

Making a planned gift allows you to RECEIVE an income for life, REDUCE your exposure to capital gains taxation, REALIZE a current charitable income tax deduction and RECOGNIZE a larger gift to NET. If you’d like to find out more about the four R’s and planned giving options that support the programming you enjoy, visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning or contact NET. John Knape Director of Major & Planned Giving 402-470-6351 jknape@netNebraska.org

Country “Doc” Makes Lasting Gift The estate of long-time Benkelman doctor Kenneth C. Stout – one of the last “country docs” who made house calls and worked all hours – has made a generous gift to benefit NET. Because of Stout’s $1 million legacy gift, local programs and news that benefit Nebraskans will be supported for years to come through the endowment he created. Stout graduated from Oxford High School in 1937. He worked two jobs there to save money for medical school – as a drug store clerk for 8 cents an hour and movie projectionist for 25 cents an hour – but was detoured by military service. Stationed in Alaska during WWII, he worked in the weather service for the U.S. Army Air Corp. Three days after being discharged in 1946, he began classes at the University of Nebraska and received both his bachelor’s and medical degrees in 1952. He settled in Benkelman in 1955 and retired in 2005 after serving thousands of patients in southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado. A respected physician and philanthropist, he died in 2016 at 97 years of age. Like Dr. Stout, those interested in preserving NET’s future can learn more about the benefits of joining the Friends of the Future Society at netNebraska.org/giftplanning.
