JULY 2019 1

Message to Our Members

As I write this message to you in mid-June, we are racing toward NET’s fiscal year finish line on June 30, and preparing to start our new year on July 1. One of our greatest accomplishments is our thriving membership base. More than 28,200 (one-thousand more than June 2018) generous NET members support production of new documentaries, news stories, longrunning local favorites like Backyard Farmer, Big Red Wrap Up, Nebraska Stories and radio’s Friday LIVE. Member gifts also help NET acquire the national PBS and NPR content our viewers and listeners enjoy every day. Every contribution and every new member truly make a difference. Thank you! During NET’s last fiscal year, we produced local documentaries about topics such as Nebraska volleyball, filmmakers, chocolate, wine, innovation and health, plus nearly 200 hours of sports action. The news department filed hundreds of Signature Stories on radio – covering issues affecting all Nebraskans. Our education team reached children and families with high-quality materials that spark learning. Digital teams created 360 videos about the Platte River watershed and the Milky Way galaxy as viewed from the Sandhills. And these are just a few examples of all we do!

We’ll provide more highlights, accomplishments and numbers from the past fiscal year in the annual report that you’ll receive as part of the September issue of INSIDE NET. In late May and early June, NET visited parts of western Nebraska for our semi-annual On the Road with NET trip. It was great to connect with so many folks in Alliance, Brule, Chadron, Gering, Lewellen, Mitchell, Ogallala, Scottsbluff and Sidney. We’re already making plans to visit another part of the state soon. This month we celebrate Independence Day with the 39th annual broadcast of A Capitol Fourth, live from the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Twenty cameras around Washington, D. C., will capture the iconic coverage and stunning July 4th fireworks show. Guests include music legend Carole King and electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling, while John Stamos is back as host. Happy 4th!

Serving Small Towns Is Big Job Today’s small town cops must prepare for any situation facing a big city officer. It’s a changing job in a complex world, and rural law enforcement must plan and train for situations that were once unthinkable. “It’s a scary thought to think that it’s going to happen in our town,” said Officer Regina Preston with the Mitchell, Neb., police department. The small city of 1,600 people in Scotts Bluff County experiences fewer than 100 crimes each year and the last murder in Mitchell was in 2011 – but law enforcement still prepares for the unknown. “The ones that are on the beat are now tasked with more responsibility than has ever occurred in the history of American law enforcement,” said Mike Kerby, an instructor with the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC) in Kearney.

The new NET News documentary Small Town Cops considers the shifting role of police work in Nebraska’s small towns and rural areas. Even in the safest communities where everyone knows everyone else, police must train to prepare for school shootings, encounters with drug smugglers along Interstate 80, traffic stops gone awry and an increasing number of calls involving mental illness. Small Town Cops explores how officers analyze risk and approach dangerous scenes during active shooter training at the NLETC. Plus, see how budgetary concerns have pushed communities such as David City and Fairbury to replace their local police forces with a county sheriff. In Small Town Cops, experienced and newly-trained officers explain what’s different and why they still believe in serving their communities and keeping them safe.

NPR Offers News AND Music You already count on NPR and NET News for need-to-know local news and a Nebraska perspective on breaking national and international stories – but NPR is more than just news. When you want to step away from the events of the day and relax, NPR’s All Songs Considered is the place to discover music from many genres, including a burgeoning independent rock scene. The weekly music podcast and daily blog is hosted by Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton, and is dedicated to finding music you’ll love from emerging bands and musical icons. Boilen and Hilton sift through hundreds of new CDs to find music that is worth getting excited about, whether it's the latest Swedish pop band, a hip hop artist going ambient or a singer-songwriter with a twisted new take on love. All Songs Considered first featured music heard on NPR’s daily afternoon news program All Things Considered. Today, it has a dedicated online audience, as hundreds of thousands listen on npr.org and via podcast every month.

Can’t Drive It?

DECIDE TO DONATE! Do you have an unused car, truck, motorcycle, boat or RV taking up space in your driveway or garage? Perhaps your classic car is collecting dust? You can donate it to NET, free up space and help keep the quality television and radio programs you enjoy on our air. Each vehicle donation helps NET provide engaging, informative, entertaining and educational programs to viewers and listeners all around Nebraska.

The vehicle does not need to be in working condition. We will tow it away at no cost to you, and you’ll get a tax deductible receipt. Vehicles can be picked up from your home, office or even the repair shop. Making a donation is easy. Fill out the online donation form or call toll-free any day of the week to speak to an operator who can answer your questions.

Jane Basoco intended to drive her 2005 Saturn Vue for a long time, but an unsettling sound changed all that. “I was going to church and heard a pop when I started it up.” As she drove, Jane noticed the steering seemed “off.” The repair shop report wasn’t good – the frame had rusted and broken. “They asked me if I wanted to take it home and sell it piece by piece out of the driveway,” she said. Instead, Jane and her husband Bob decided to donate the car to NET. “DuTeau kept the car in a back lot until NET’s contractor could pick it up,” Jane explained. The Basocos said the decision was easy. “Jane and I have a lifetime connection to NET,” said Bob.

Before they were married, Jane and Bob both lived TheTelevision mission ofRadio NET is to enrich lives and Learning Services Technology Services on Rathbone Road in engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services Lincoln and were friends that educate and enlighten. and neighbors of former CEO: NET general manager Jack Mark Leonard McBride and Ron Hull ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER who is Special Advisor to FOR DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING: Debbie Hamlett NET. “My interest and my DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS: involvement goes back to Cameron Risher Ron and Jack,” said Bob. Bob listens most often to radio, listing his favorite program as Friday afternoon’s Classics by Request. Jane enjoys radio, too, especially the morning BirdNote feature, but also watches television. “I am a nurse and really like Call the Midwife. It’s so realistic.” The couple is pleased their car donation supports NET. “If you can do some good, you should try to do it,” explained Bob. “Helping NET is a way of doing good.”
