Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. CT on NET The harsh reality is that every day in Nebraska, there’s sex for sale. Although it’s difficult to quantify, research shows it could be hundreds of people each month. The newest documentary from NET News, Sold for Sex: Trafficking in Nebraska, reveals an ugly industry whose victims are mostly female and often children. NET News shows how the “selling” and “shopping” happens in Nebraska’s commercial sex industry, identifies “hot spots” in urban and rural communities, and explores the role Interstate 80 and high-profile events play in trafficking. Sold for Sex: Trafficking in Nebraska also identifies efforts to support victims and survivors, and tells the emotional story of a woman who is healing after she was swept into sex trafficking as a vulnerable young girl.

NET SALUTES THE NEBRASKA SESQUICENTENNIAL,

Nebraska’s 150th birthday is an opportunity to honor our heritage, celebrate our growth and plan for the state’s future. On NET, the celebration begins Jan. 1, 2017, and continues throughout the year. NET is broadcasting a series of Nebraska 150 History Moments television spots that highlight the state’s history, culture, people and geography, plus creations unique to Nebraska such as center-pivot irrigation systems and the Reuben sandwich. We’ll also be opening NET’s program archives and rebroadcasting some of our most significant productions. As Nebraska’s storyteller, NET takes pride in documenting our great state. It’s something we’ve been doing for more than six decades. These Nebraska-themed archive programs will air on NET Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. CT during the first part of 2017, and at other times throughout the year. They will be identified with a blue NEBRASKA 15O in the primetime program listings on pages 4-13 of INSIDE NET.

The Oregon Trail, Pony Express routes, the first transcontinental highway and Interstate 80 all follow the footprint of the Platte River – Nebraska’s official state river. In most places it’s shallow and broad – meandering 310 miles across the Nebraska landscape and flowing true to the origins of its Native American name, meaning “flat water.” Nebraska 150 History Moments on NET are produced with support from Humanities Nebraska. 16

Free Estate Planning Booklet Estate planning is one of the most overlooked areas of personal financial management, and it’s a critical component of financial health. Are you one of the more than 120 million Americans who do not have proper estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents or untimely death? If so, your family could be among the many families in this situation who incur unnecessary expenses and experience financial difficulty. “Raising awareness about estate planning aligns with NET’s public service and educational mission,” said John Knape, NET’s director of major and planned giving. Proper planning can help you avoid these unintended consequences. If you are ready to organize your financial assets, think through your personal financial goals and avoid unnecessary hardship, contact NET to order a free financial planning booklet. Betty and Frank Balderson

SUPPORTING NET

Since 1976, Frank and Betty Balderson have been members of NET. Their 40 years of support has helped to sustain outstanding programs that benefit all Nebraskans. Through the years, they have enjoyed watching Sesame Street with their children and grandchildren and have always looked forward to Ken Burns documentaries. Their other favorites include the high school and collegiate sporting events that NET carries live, as well as musical and holiday programs like Mannheim Steamroller concerts.

Why is NET a priority? “We value NET because they cover Nebraska issues and events including ag news and information from the Unicameral,” Frank said. Programs from Masterpiece Classic like Downton Abbey and science programs from NOVA have also provided hours of entertainment and education, Betty added. Before moving to Scottsbluff 19 years ago, the Baldersons raised their family in Alliance, where Frank practiced law. Still active throughout the Panhandle, they attend many local events. And, Betty wouldn’t miss her “Betty Club” activities that include 25 other women in the area named “Betty.” 22

What else happened in 1976? Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer in the garage of Jobs’ parent’s house in Cupertino, California.
