Message to Our Members

Many of us have spent a lot of time during the past several months thinking about the 2020 elections, how the economy and climate are affecting our communities, and now, there are growing concerns about the spread of COVID-19. It’s an unsettling time when information is rapidly changing. The experience can be overwhelming, and it’s often difficult to sort fiction from truth. We understand and share your concerns. Our team is dedicated to providing all Nebraskans with reliable, trusted sources of news and information on television, radio and online. The PBS NewsHour, Washington Week, and NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered provide facts so you can make informed decisions. PBS NewsHour has been on the air for more than 40 years and Washington Week is the longest running primetime news and public affairs series on television. These two news programs are consistently listed among the most trusted in the country. We’ve assembled a webpage with the most current information about COVID-19 in Nebraska, as well as facts about the disease and resources for reducing your risk of infection. Our news team is working diligently to bring you updates from communities across the state – read more on page 3. In light of many school closings, parents and teachers are looking for ways to supplement and extend learning. To help, pages 14-15 of this magazine feature several educational resources from PBS and NET, plus information about signing up for our weekly education newsletter Smart Scoop. The NPR Life Kit offers advice about coronavirus and parenting, tips to manage working from home and guidance for surviving the stock market storm. Download podcasts at npr.org/lifekit. Please remember to take a break from the news. Listen to a beautiful piece of music, transport yourself to a different place and time with Masterpiece, or watch a fun episode of Sesame Street with your family. Thank you for your continued support of NET even in these difficult times. Your contributions truly make a difference.

TALKING TO KIDS

WHAT WE KNOW

Are your kids worrying about COVID-19? PBS Parents has advice on ways to talk to your children, plus information on practicing healthy habits.

A NOVA video explains what we know and don’t know about the coronavirus that is causing the respiratory illness COVID-19.

Hidden among the momentous events of World War II were the human stories of courage, loyalty, fear, hope, loss and love. This new seven-part series paints intimate portraits of ordinary people in extraordinary times. Read more about the 50th anniversary of Masterpiece on page 17. APRIL 2020 3

MAKING A Masterpiece is essential Sunday night viewing for millions of public television fans who settle in when the opening theme music begins. The iconic series sparked America’s passion for British drama, and is now PBS’s longest-running and most honored drama series.

Alistair Cooke

Recent hits such as Downton Abbey and Sherlock, and beloved classics such as Upstairs Downstairs, Jewel of the Crown, The Forsyte Saga and Poldark are just a few reasons why Masterpiece is one of the most popular programs in television history. Alistair Cooke, the witty Englishman with a rich voice and a sterling reputation, was master of ceremonies for the series from 1971 to 1992. This year, Masterpiece is preparing to celebrate 50 years as a cherished source of high-quality storytelling. The series is expanding content beyond broadcast television. Fans can hear interviews with acting and producing talent on the Masterpiece Studio podcast, engage across social media platforms and watch online.

DID YOU KNOW? A series of Masterpiece parodies appeared on Sesame Street as Monsterpiece Theater, hosted by Cookie Monster as “Alistair Cookie.”

Major support for Nature: American Spring LIVE was provided by the National Science Foundation and Anne Ray Foundation.

WATERSHED STORIES OF PEOPLE CONNECTED BY WATER Watershed is an immersive 360-degree video series which showcases the beauty and diversity of one of America’s major watersheds, and looks at the important ways people are connected by water. Fed by Rocky Mountain snowpack and High Plains Aquifer, the Platte River watershed stretches 500 miles across three states to join the Missouri River and flow on to the Gulf of Mexico. We partnered with PBS to share our 16-part Watershed video series with stations and viewers around the country. Watershed explores how water resources are allocated upstream and downstream for agriculture and industry, drinking water, recreation and wildlife. Available on both the PBS website and on social media, the online series offers reflections from people who live and work in the watershed, including scientists, conservationists, farmers, ranchers, ditch riders, microbrewers, restaurateurs, a pro snowboarder and a writer.

Be a Citizen Scientist There’s a lot to look forward to in spring, including one of the sweetest sounds of the season – birdsong. Fortunately, you can still practice social distancing while spending time outdoors, listening to birds and enjoying nature. As a citizen scientist, you can even learn to decode bird songs and calls, and understand more about the species living around you. We are partnering with community organizations around the state to provide online activities for budding citizen scientists. With virtual guidance from researchers, you can investigate how birds and other organisms in Nebraska respond to the change from winter to spring. Discover more about bird behavior by watching them at the feeder, or document how red-tailed hawks behave and vocalize. There are also opportunities to learn how birds respond to landscape, habitat and environmental projects.

Norfolk Man Gives $2.3 Million Estate Gift to Support NET Endowment Norman Ochsner once purchased a camper with intentions of traveling to see relatives across the country, but his cousin Gerald Wakeley said it never left the front yard. “He had to watch the markets to be sure to sell his grain at the right time so it was just hard for him to leave,” he explained. According to his cousin, Ochsner watched a lot of programs on NET, most of them related to travel and places he might want to see. Early in his life, Ochsner did travel with his parents on family vacations to visit aunts, uncles and cousins living in Montana and California. There were also trips to Hawaii and Europe. He was an only child though, and after his parents died, Ochsner spent most of his time on the family farm near Norfolk, caring for the properties and keeping the operation running smoothly. Ochsner died in 2018, and NET was notified it was one of a few organizations that would receive gifts from his estate. The $2.3 million gift will support the NET Endowment which funds public media programs and services that will benefit all Nebraskans for years to come.

A graduate of Norfolk Senior High School and the University of Nebraska, Ochsner worked for a time as a draftsman at Nucor Steel during the 1970s. “He was a talented draftsman, almost an artist in the pencil sketches he produced,” said his cousin. Ochsner was active in several community organizations, including the Norfolk Community Theater, the Norfolk Art Center and the Norfalcon Radio control airplane club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Norfolk for more than 60 years.

Our popular Friday LIVE arts and humanities radio show was recently honored with the Thomas C. Woods III Partner in the Arts award. Rachel Martin Waking up is hard to do, but NPR’s Morning Edition team makes it easier. Hosts Rachel Martin, David Greene and Steve Inskeep share the day’s stories and news with radio listeners who are on the go. Martin joined the Morning Edition team in December 2016, bringing with her four years of experience as the host of Weekend Edition Sunday, and many more years as a reporter for the NPR network. She served as NPR’s National Security Correspondent and has worked extensively in Europe, Iraq and Afghanistan. In an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review when she began her morning gig, Martin described the Morning Edition team as three people who are curious about the world, hopefully asking the questions that Americans want them to ask on their behalf. “What happens in America, as we have seen, affects the rest of the world, for better or for worse,” she said. Rachel Martin shares hosting duties for NPR’s morning news podcast Up First – featuring the day’s top three headlines available from npr.org/podcasts.
