OF PUBLIC BROADCASTING President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the act on Nov. 7, 1967.

NOVEMBER 2017 1

Message to Our Members The Public Broadcasting Act was created to foster and promote non-commercial public radio and television, including educational, cultural and civic programming. Broadcasting was changing and growing, and some were concerned that commercial stations did not focus enough on education.

new generation of PBS viewers. Our dramatizations of six Mark Twain novels (1980) and The Trial of Standing Bear (1985) documentary were some of the most popular PBS programs. Without the confines The Flower Box facing commercial with Wayne Whitney broadcasters, Bugs and Things public media has with Bob Roselle been free to tell Yesterday in Nebraska stories that pique with James Olson curiosity, not peak Outdoor Nebraska with Paul Gilbert ratings.

In the words of President Johnson, “It will give a wider and, I think, stronger voice to educational radio and television by providing new funds for broadcast facilities. It will launch a major study of television’s use in the nation’s classrooms and their potential use throughout the world.”

Since NET began in 1954, technology has evolved in ways our founders never imagined. You can find our content on new channels and platforms, but we still offer every Nebraskan free, over-the-air access. Whether it’s history, nature, the arts, drama, news or more than 230 hours of NET was committed to education from safe, educational PBS KIDS programs each the beginning – even early on when every week – you make it possible.  program was live or on film because videotape had yet to be invented! As you celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday with your family, When Nebraska schools began teaching always remember that NET is thankful for “new math” in the late 1960s, Dorcas your continued support! Our partnership Cavett (Dick Cavett’s stepmother) took is an example of what we believe was to the airwaves to instruct schools and intended by the Public Broadcasting Act. teachers about the new method. And, who doesn’t remember a teacher pushing Thank you! a TV cart into the classroom so students could watch something from NET? However, we don’t just educate children. NET’s first national series Anyone for Tennyson introduced poetry to a

1954 KUON (NET) signs on and begins morning operations.

1969 NET becomes a PBS member station.

1972969 The Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Center in Lincoln is dedicated.

1976 NET wins a case of logo trademark infringement by NBC.

From the studios of KOLN-TV in Lincoln, NET signed on as the nation’s ninth public broadcasting station Nov. 1, 1954. In 1956, the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska assumed the FCC license, and two years later broadcasts began from the Temple Building on the Lincoln campus. NET never strayed from its educational roots, developing early instructional television for classrooms and later a “telelearning” service for teachers to record programs. In 1980, NET launched the EduCable cable television service and in 1983, the NET-produced Reading Rainbow children’s series premiered. As a public media forerunnner, NET was broadcasting 15 years before PBS was created. Along with using a fledgling national service, NET created local shows like The Great Plains Trilogy, Your Unicameral, Yesterday in Nebraska, House and Home, history programs with author Mari Sandoz, interviews with poet laureate John G. Neihardt and Backyard Farmer. Fifty years after the start of public broadcasting, community efforts and ingenuity have taken public television and radio far beyond anything the nation or Nebraskans could have conceived.

1976 PBS distributes NET’s Anyone for Tennyson poetry series.

1980 NET begins gavel-togavel coverage of the legislature.

1985 NET tests stereo sound, the biggest advance in TV since color.

1990 NET adds public radio to its network.

2003

With financial support from the legislature, NET launches its digital broadcast service.

2017 NET adds a fourth television channel – NET PBS KIDS.

By voice votes in both the House and Senate – signifying near-universal support by both Democrats and Republicans – Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, establishing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and creating the modern public broadcasting system.

NOVEMBER 2017 13

Pershing was a Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the University of Nebraska, founded the renowned Pershing Rifles and earned a law degree from the university.

His soldiers helped win the Great War. His heart hid an unspeakable tragedy. Ambitious, driven and hard on his men, General John J. Pershing commanded 2 million American troops against a veteran German Army in World War I.

Alarm. Coffee. Breakfast. Workout. Commute. News.

Nicknamed “Black Jack,” the six-star General is the highest ranking active duty Officer in American history. He led his troops with an iron shell, never speaking of the tragic wounds buried deep in his heart.

Droughts ravaged the region in the 1930s and many communities disappeared from the Great Plains, including DeWitty. Families moved away, and the town was unincorporated in 1936. A State Historical Marker was recently erected to recognize one of the prominent African American settlements in Nebraska.

One of the largest colonies of black homesteaders once lived in the Sandhills of Nebraska, between Valentine and Thedford. They staked claim to 640 acres during the Kinkaid Act of 1904 and called their new community DeWitty. By 1910, 24 families lived on the land in Cherry County along the North Loop River.

Give the Gift of Stock As the end of 2017 approaches, you might be considering what and how to give before December 31. Making a gift to NET can ensure the future of the television and radio programing you enjoy all year long. An end-of-the-year cash donation is always appreciated, but a gift of appreciated stock could benefit NET and YOU – in the form of attractive tax savings. By donating appreciated stock that you’ve owned for more than one year, you become eligible to claim an immediate charitable deduction for what the stock is worth today as opposed to what you paid for it. The deduction could help reduce your taxable income and ultimately your tax bill. Giving stock directly to NET can help keep your long-term gains in the community, rather than on your tax return. And, if you are concerned about your cash flow, a gift of appreciated stock allows you to conveniently support NET, but also hold on to your cash. Visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning or contact NET.
