Message to Our Members PBS held its annual conference recently, and there are several exciting programs coming your way! Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. is back for another season. One of the guests, Christiane Amanpour, host of Amanpour on PBS, finds out she’s related to Genghis Khan! Also, journalist Ann Curry tells the moving story of one of the few living Holocaust survivors in a second season of her series We’ll Meet Again. Midsummer Murders returns in the fall, and in August, we’ll have a hilarious look at Betty White’s career as the first woman of television. American in Paris is featured in a new Great Performances episode, and American Masters brings you stories about more interesting people, including Itzhak Perlman and Toni Morrison. As you receive this edition of INSIDE NET, we are in the midst of our latest On the Road adventure to Broken Bow, Lexington, Kearney and McCook. Depending on the mail, some events may have already happened, but you can visit netNebraska.org/ontheroad to see our schedule. We are welcoming NET members and friends for excellent discussions at our Town Talks and outstanding local music during a Friday LIVE radio broadcast – this time from McCook. And we are hoping for a great crowd in Kearney to see a taping of our popular Backyard Farmer television series. Plus, parents and children can

attend PBS KIDS educational screenings and activities. We’ll be back On the Road visiting more towns across Nebraska in the early fall. This month you’ll see the new NET documentary Great Plains Rail Tales. It’s about the history of the transcontinental railroad and the culture surrounding the industry. Before I get “sidetracked,” my “train of thought” is “on track” and I am going “full steam ahead” to remind you there are many phrases and words we still use that originated from the early days of railroad. OK, this thought is becoming a “train wreck,” so let me “switch tracks.” The drama of Downton Abbey is back in June. Relive the wonder of this grand story or watch for the first time from the beginning! And, seasons 2 and 3 of Poldark will run over the summer, too, so you’ll be ready for season 4 in the fall. NET’s fiscal year closes June 30. We are encouraged by your kind words and continued, dependable support. You are our most effective ambassadors. Please help us spread the word about the many programs and services NET provides across the state. We’ve got a great line-up this month – one you’ve helped make possible. Thank you!

GREAT PLAINS

RAIL TALES Wednesday, June 6 at 8:30 p.m. CT on NET Friday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. CT on NET Railroads are a symbol of American prosperity – a driving force in westward expansion and the settlement of the Great Plains region. Great Plains Rail Tales follows the tracks of the transcontinental railroad, perhaps the most significant evolutionary force of the 19th and 20th centuries, revealing the expanding industry’s effects on our nation and Nebraska’s landscape, culture and economy. Explore Nebraska before it became a territory and a state, and learn how the railroad industry shaped everything from our language to how we set our clocks. Told by historians, railroaders, hobbyists, aficionados and descendants of people tied to the industry, Great Plains Rail Tales journeys through the romantic history of trains and captures our fascination with the rails. In this new season, a dozen amateur bakers are on a quest to be Britain’s best. Judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood create 30 new challenges that test skill and creativity – and make for a delicious ending!

BIG

VOICE

Monday, June 4 8 p.m. CT on NET Friday, June 29 10 p.m. CT on NET

Nebraska native Jeffe Huls is a passionate choir director at Santa Monica High in California. In this inspiring musical documentary, he and his talented students overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and high school struggles to become one “big voice.” Huls grew up in the tight knit community of Sterling, surrounded by caring neighbors and enjoying carefree summer days. He remembers music being a part of his life early on, both at school and church. His family moved to California when he was in sixth grade and found music to be both an escape and a “safe place” for him. It also became his career. According to Huls, Big Voice captures a school community at work, in a space where kids feel safe. “I am just hoping that I am creating the next generation of leaders. Our world needs people who know how to work and struggle together for the common good of all despite many, many differences,” he said. Despite budget cuts that endanger arts programs everywhere, Huls is a committed teacher who strives to create a vibrant program that ignites a passion for music, a sense of belonging and the value of working hard to achieve dreams.

the Cyberchase series and the concepts included in the text messages. Alexandra Essen, the school librarian at Prairie Lane Elementary School in Omaha participated in the April 28 workshop and commented that the best part was seeing a Cyberchase episode and learning how to use it with her students. “It was fun and engaging and I learned some great new ideas and resources to use,” she said. As part of our longtime commitment to education, NET is working to improve awareness in Nebraska about free, high-quality educational materials available from PBS LearningMedia and other sources such as Cyberchase.

A Passion for Public Television Leads to Planned Gift “This has just been a remarkable week. We have such a wonderful variety of programs we watch on NET and have fun sharing our story. We just love public television,” Mary Ann Johnson of Omaha said. “Just last week Bob was talking about Bird Brain on NOVA to someone, and when people find out I volunteer for NET, they always tell me their favorite show. The other day a young nurse I met told me about Backyard Farmer as they’re starting a garden. I’m always surprised to hear everyone’s favorites.” Mary Ann and her husband Bob have been fabulous supporters for years and put NET in their will. Making a planned gift to NET is a significant way to fund programs for the future. In addition, Mary Ann has been a valued volunteer for eight years, working alongside Major and Planned Gift Officer Bridget Robbins. They first met Bridget when they joined a member tour in 2008 to Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Soon after, Mary Ann called to help with our Inspire Nebraska fundraising campaign and stayed on to assist with local events.

Mary Ann & Bob Johnson

“We had an office party once for Antiques Roadshow and invited an antiques expert to join us. Another time we celebrated the traditions of Downton Abbey,” she said. Mary Ann’s influence extends beyond Nebraska as she serves on the board for the National Friends of Public Broadcasting. Bob, a retired Lutheran pastor, likes to watch Masterpiece, plus news programs like PBS NewsHour, Amanpour on PBS and Washington Week. He occasionally serves a congregation in Rosalie on the Omaha Indian Reservation and appreciates programs on Native Americans, like our documentary Medicine Woman which featured Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte. And you’re never too old to appreciate Mister Rogers as their pledge item had just arrived from a recent donation when we spoke — a Mister Rogers sweater mug, five DVD set and tote bag. Thank you Mary Ann and Bob for making a difference and helping to fund all of our great programs!

An Easy Way to Make an Impact

The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.

Television • Radio Learning Services • Technology Services

Interested in helping NET fulfill our mission to educate and inspire Nebraska, but feel overwhelmed by the thought of writing another check or giving up your assets today? A simple, flexible way to ensure NET can continue providing public media to Nebraska is by gifting a percentage of your estate in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. Bequests allow you to make larger gifts to support our work than most people could during their lifetime. In addition, gifts through a will are flexible – they can be changed as your life circumstances change. Only you know the special circumstances of your family members and heirs. That’s why it’s important to discuss these issues with your attorney. Some things to address include how you want to distribute your estate, whom you want to be the executor and which charities you wish to support. Visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning for more information about estate gifts and other giving options. John Knape, Director of Major & Planned Giving 800-634-6788, ext. 351 jknape@netNebraska.org
