Message to Our Members As this is written, we are fresh off our “On the Road” trip to Hastings, Holdrege and Minden. A surprise spring snowstorm kept us from hosting planned events in McCook, but we plan to reschedule and will let you know when NET will be in your area again! It was wonderful to see so many members and friends turn out for excellent discussions at three Town Talk meetings and outstanding local music during a Friday LIVE radio broadcast from Hastings College. We had an enthusiastic live audience when we taped an episode of Backyard Farmer at Pioneer Village and it was heartwarming to see so many of our own “PBS KIDS” and their families enjoying Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood events. Plus, our first NPR Generation Listen event in Hastings was well attended. Keep an eye out for more of these sessions. We always learn so much about each town and appreciate the comments and hospitality from each community! Look for us in Seward on Friday, June 16, for a special one-day “On the Road” event. See page 14 for all the details, or visit netNebraska.org/ontheroad for the most updated schedule. We hope to see you there!

As we near the end of our fiscal year (June 30), we are encouraged by your kind words and continued, Debbie Hamlett dependable support. You are our most effective ambassadors. Please help us spread the word about the many programs and services NET provides across the state. As you know, the federal budget is uncertain for public broadcasting. We are preparing for possible scenarios and know that you will stand ready to help should we need it. Lastly, after more than 40 years with NPR, Robert Siegel has announced that he will be stepping down as host of All Things Considered in January. He’s been a longtime friend and companion to our NET Radio listeners. We’ll all miss his voice and signature reporting. As you read through INSIDE NET this month, you’ll see the great line-up of programming that you help make possible. Thank you!

Debbie Hamlett

The Beatles changed the face of music forever with the creation of the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Fifty years ago, feeling that playing live music was limiting their growth as a band, the British sensation headed to Abbey Road studios and poured their energy into writing and recording, creating an album that was a performance unto itself. Sgt. Pepper’s Musical Revolution looks back at the creation and influence of the revolutionary 1967 Beatles album.

Pass through the portal that brought the world into the modern era, as music from today’s greatest artists is reassembled on the very first 1920s electrical sound recording system.

Kingsley Dam & Lake McConaughy

Lined with more than 100 miles of shoreline and beaches, Lake McConaughy near Ogallala is Nebraska’s largest lake and a popular site for recreation. It was formed when the 10-story high Kingsley Dam was built on the North Platte River beginning in 1936. Today, the dam’s hydroplant creates electricity and a canal system irrigates the Central Platte region. The dam and reservoir are named for two of the project’s early promoters – Minden banker George P. Kingsley and C.W. McConaughy who was a grain merchant and mayor of Holdrege. Retired Teacher Is Major Fan “NET’s programs enrich my life and have brought me a lot of pleasure. Masterpiece is always good — especially Downton Abbey — and I’ve gotten my fingers dirty with Backyard Farmer. I’ve learned so much from the Ken Burns’ series on the Roosevelts and rely daily on PBS NewsHour for reliable and in-depth news coverage,” said Kate Bradley, a retired Omaha elementary school teacher. “Arts and humanities feed my soul. That’s why I’ve included NET in my will,” she said. A graduate of Duchesne College of the Sacred Heart in Omaha, Bradley explained that the college had a tremendous emphasis on the humanities and her aim was to establish a legacy to help fund education programs that include the humanities. “I believe that legacies need to feed education to have longer-ranging effects, and I believe in NET. I may not be a major donor, but I am a major fan.”

Bradley grew up in a family of four girls in Howells. “My parents raised us with all the right things which really weren’t things. They frequently reminded us that they wanted to give us the kind of things which no one could ever take away: faith, love, education, travel and aesthetic experiences.” After her dad died, Bradley’s mother joined her in Omaha for 19 years until she passed away. Now with more time to travel, she is warming up her passport for a river cruise in Europe and plans to return to China.
