FEBRUARY 2020 1

Message to Our Members It’s February and we’re deep into a frosty winter. If you find yourself spending a lot more time indoors, don’t worry – we have plenty of great programming to keep you entertained! Do you cook more in the winter? Cold weather makes me think about stews and soups, but an episode of No Passport Required with Chef Marcus Samuelsson will have you thinking about foods you might never have tasted. Samuelsson is a chef and restaurateur with Ethiopian and Swedish roots. He was the youngest chef to receive a three-star rating from the New York Times and soon after was named best chef in the city by the James Beard Foundation. He visits chefs from across the country and around the world and before he orders, he always asks, “C’mon, tell me what your mama would order.” I love his zest for life and discovery of culture through food. Watch the series and explore a new dish or recipe this month! For more than 20 years, Independent Lens has been presenting unforgettable and acclaimed stories on PBS. The episode The First Rainbow Coalition, airing on Sunday night, Feb. 2 at 10 p.m., takes you back to 1969, when the Chicago Black Panther Party formed a multiethnic coalition with the Young Lords Organization and the Young Patriots.

In one of the most segregated cities in post-war America, the Rainbow Coalition changed the face of Chicago politics and created a model for future activists and politicians. This film and others from Independent Lens are part of our community discussion series Indie Lens Pop-Up. Check out the schedule at netNebraska.org/engage for details on upcoming screenings in Lincoln. American Portrait is a new PBS initiative that asks you, and people all over the country, to submit stories about what it means to be an American today. At pbs.org/american-portrait, you’ll find a series of thought-provoking prompts such as “I was raised to believe…,” “The tradition I carry on is…,” “What keeps me up at night is…,” and “You don’t know what it’s like to…” It’s an interesting journey to read comments from across the country and realize just how unique and yet similar we all are. As always, thank you for your continued support. Your generous gifts allow us to provide services to our local communities and beyond. You are our heroes! With appreciation,

Debbie Hamlett

PREMIERING

Monday, Feb. 3 9 p.m. CT on NET An Omaha artist’s journey that began in the poorest neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., comes full circle with the creation of a bronze figure of Nebraska author Willa Cather that is bound for the U.S. Capitol. In the fall of 2020, Willa Cather will take her place in Statuary Hall— where a young Littleton Alston once wandered in awe. And, he will become the first African American artist to create a work destined for the chamber that is devoted to sculptures of prominent Americans. A Sculpted Life follows Alston on his creative quest to understand his subject – one of America’s greatest writers. He works on a clay model of Cather in his Omaha studio, visits Red Cloud to explore her childhood home and begins work on the 7-foot bronze likeness of Cather that will represent Nebraska to millions of visitors from all over the world. Read more about Omaha artist Littleton Alston on page17.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson journeys across the U.S. to celebrate the inspiring diversity of immigrant traditions and cuisine that are woven into American food and culture. FEBRUARY 2020 3

Teach Your Child About Black History Month By kindergarten, most children have heard about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work as an advocate for peace and equality. This Black History Month, PBS Parents encourages you to go beyond Dr. King’s legacy by introducing other influential African Americans. For example, teach your child about Rosa Parks, the seamstress and civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Public libraries often display books related to Black History Month. NET PBS LearningMedia also has a great lineup of short history lessons featuring former slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, scholar Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and more. And, PBS KIDS hosts the website African American World for Kids which is interactive, informative and connects young learners with history. WANT TO KNOW MORE? net.pbslearningmedia.org

Musical Magic Awaits Listeners Listeners of the radio show Music from Hearts of Space often describe their love for the music it features and the relaxing experience it creates. “If you are immediately drawn to this kind of slow, deep, reverberant sound and find it calming and psychologically satisfying, we say you have ambient DNA,” said producer and host Stephen Hill. Hill launched the program nationally in 1983, after 10 years as a late night program on KPFA, a listener-funded talk radio and music station in Berkeley, Calif. The two-hour program features uninterrupted ambient, space and contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries. “Though we often presented cutting edge electronic music, it turned out that contemplative, immersive, space-creating music is a very old thing – centuries old, extending all the way back to pre-historic music made with primitive instruments in caves,” said Hill. Hill said Music from Hearts of Space anticipated the rise of electronic music, new age and Minimalism as popular genres in the 1980s. “But it always went beyond them in scope and quality by bringing together contemplative, space-creating music and soundscapes from some 30 new and traditional genre,” he explained. Today, the show runs on more than 400 radio stations.

STRUGGLES SHAPE HIS LIFE Littleton Alston grew up in poverty in the nation’s capital. As a boy, he escaped from the violence of the streets by hiding out in his basement, learning to draw by copying pictures from National Geographic magazines.

monumental. Alston had no way of knowing that 50 years later he would be the first African American artist to create a work for National Statuary Hall.

On hot summer days he would ride his bike to the U.S. Capitol, wandering through Statuary Hall and gazing up at the bronze and marble figures. “They were very distant,” he said. “They were like Olympian gods—they didn’t look like me, that’s for sure!”

Since 1864, every state has contributed two statues depicting prominent citizens for display in National Statuary Hall. In 2017, As a young man, he came the Nebraska legislature to Omaha on a residency voted to replace statues and stayed to raise his of William Jennings family. Now, as an associate Bryan and J. Sterling professor of sculpture Morton with new bronzes at Creighton University, of Ponca Chief Standing Littleton Alston considers himself a true Nebraskan. Bear and Willa Cather.

Over time those figures spoke to him and inspired a dream to create something equally

Alston’s life has been sculpted by hardship and triumph. His mother, single and poor, worked behind the scenes to get him accepted into the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, launching his career.

He is the subject of the new documentary A Sculpted Life, premiering this month. (Read more on pg. 3.)

Long-Time Viewers Become Long-Time Donors Allan McClure jokes that boats, jet skis and his wife LaDonna’s good cooking attract family and friends to visit when they are at home near Johnson Lake, Neb. “It’s a great way for extended family to stay connected,” he said. Both Allan and LaDonna are originally from the Arnold, Neb. area, but called West Point home for 33 years before retiring to spend time at the lake and in Arizona. With a background in farming, Allan began as an agriculture representative and eventually became president of First National Bank of West Point while LaDonna kept busy as a community volunteer and raised their children. “We started watching NET in West Point in the 1970s,” said LaDonna. “I watched Sesame Street every day from noon to one with our son.” Allan watched ag news programs and PBS NewsHour, “It was more in depth than the other national media,” he said. “I still watch every evening and also Washington Week on Friday nights. They are good programs as far as getting an unbiased approach to the news.”

The couple also enjoys high school sports and Husker volleyball, as well as Doc Martin, Downton Abbey and music programs – especially the recent Ken Burns’ series about country music. In addition to being long-time viewers, the McClures are long-time donors. “It’s just a good place for our money to go. If people don’t support it, we won’t have it,” said Allan. In addition to regular gifts, Allan explains they also make a disbursement from an IRA. “It’s pre-tax money and it’s the most efficient way for us to give.” They have also provided a gift to NET in their wills, supporting the future of NET’s statewide television network. “The station reaches into the rural areas of Nebraska and that’s good. Everybody gets public TV,” said LaDonna.

A Tax-Saving Way to Help NET If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-smart gift to support NET with a Qualified Charitable Distribution, also known as a “rollover” gift from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA). It’s an easy way to put your philanthropic dollars to work and jump-start your planned giving legacy to NET – all while reaping tax benefits for yourself. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to NET – without having to pay income taxes on the money. NET will put your gift to use right away, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making. The transfer from your IRA generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. Advantages to You: • Your gift is excluded from taxable income and can count as your required minimum distribution • It may prevent you from being pushed into a higher tax bracket • It is easy to do – just notify your IRA custodian • It minimizes the effect on your cash flow because the gift is from your assets, not your checkbook • It allows you to make a significant gift to support NET
