Message to Our Members

The calendar pages are flying by quickly as 2017 races to the finish line. NET’s television and radio programs remind me to slow down and ponder life’s mysteries and questions of the day. It’s the sort of prompt that complements a slower, more mindful pace. As I think back through the past 12 months, I’m proud of many things that your dependable support has helped us accomplish. We produced Nebraska 150 History Moments, celebrating the state’s sesquicentennial with stories on television and radio about our culture, people and state. The documentary Sold for Sex: Trafficking in Nebraska became the most watched NET video on You Tube and the NETproduced 360-degree video of the solar eclipse at Carhenge in Alliance received more than 1 million views on Facebook, with both PBS and NPR sharing it on their Facebook pages. The PlainStory podcast debuted with stories about life on the Great Plains. Speaking of Nebraska engaged you with expert discussion about education, the economy, agriculture, health care and politics. And, more than 3,000 people from all across the state attended 16 screenings of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick film The Vietnam War – some sharing tears as well as their personal physical and emotional scars from the war.

A big accomplishment in 2017 was the addition of our new fourth channel. NET PBS KIDS is perfect for today’s families with 24/7 access and flexibility to watch programs during the evenings and other times when everyone can be together. And, just like our other three channels, NET PBS KIDS is available free, over-theair with a simple antenna. There are many more documentaries, interviews, events and concerts that I didn’t mention here that you’ve helped to make possible. Thank you! It’s been a great year for NET, and we look forward creating more of what you want to see and hear on YOUR statewide public media network in 2018. Best wishes for a joyous and restful holiday season,

Debbie Hamlett

NET SALUTES THE NEBRASKA SESQUICENTENNIAL NEBRASKA 15O HISTORY MOMENT

WOOLLY MAMMOTH FOSSIL

Remains of woolly mammoths and mastodons have been found in all of Nebraska’s 93 counties, but the most famous was discovered in Lincoln County in 1922. With massive curling tusks and long shaggy hair, they were the giant grass-eaters of the Ice Age tundra. Nicknamed Archie, the world’s largest Columbian mammoth skeleton is displayed at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. Standing nearly twelve feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 8 tons, Archie and mammoths like him roamed Nebraska in prehistoric times. Mammoths were named the state fossil in 1967.

Broadcasters Present Chairman’s Award to NET Journalist NET News producer Bill Kelly was one of seven professionals recently recognized by the Nebraska Broadcasters Association for efforts to open the state’s courts to video and audio recording. Kelly and his broadcast and judicial branch colleagues were each presented with the prestigious NBA Chairman’s Award, the association’s highest honor given to individuals and organizations who have supported NBA initiatives. During his career as a journalist, Kelly has covered a number of high-profile court cases. The experience led him to participate in the Nebraska Bar Foundation’s Bench/Media Committee, reviewing court rules and educating judges and journalists about cameras and microphones in Nebraska’s courts. His efforts included partnering with the NBA to organize panel discussions for journalists, students and the public. As part of its commitment to citizen access to the court system, NET provides streaming from the Nebraska Supreme Court and the Courts of Appeals.

Returning to Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. CT on NET Powerful investigative storytelling about the complex stories that shape our times. (FRONTLINE will not air on Dec. 5 & 26)

Omaha Teacher Uses PBS Resources In Tim Royers’ Millard West High School classroom, he’s not just teaching World History or American Government. He’s teaching his students to think for themselves and creating an environment where facts become pieces of a larger picture. “Now it’s something that actually impacts who they are and suddenly they care a lot more about it,” he said. Royers lets facts speak for themselves and finds the independent storytelling he appreciates on public television. “PBS carries a better perception of just a presentation of facts. It’s not clustered in with left or right leaning. It’s PBS. It’s seen as a fairly neutral arbiter of information.” FRONTLINE is one of the programs he shows in his classes. “One of the reasons why I really like FRONTLINE is because a lot of times the shows let the stories present themselves,” said Royers. The lack of commentary is something Royers appreciates, whether students are watching an episode about the election of President Trump, or another about Obama’s handling of conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “For about 15 minutes they would just show what counterinsurgency looks like. They had an embedded PBS journalist, but they just showed the patrol. They showed what it was like to talk to the villagers. You see them get ambushed by the Taliban.” Royers shows the clips and encourages his students to analyze them and develop their own opinions. “The biggest reason to show all these things is just to get kids to pause and reflect, and develop an ability to understand,” he said.

Put Your Stock To Good Use Karen Ibach of rural Ansley was just about to make sugar cookies for her 10 greatgrandchildren the afternoon we called to visit with her about her generous gift of stock to NET. Karen lives on the ranch where she spent her childhood. She and her late husband Gary moved there from Columbus and raised Charolais cattle before he died in 2008. “When the member guide came in the mail, I read an article about financial support of NET — I knew this was a place for my stock to go – they will handle it well,” Karen explained. Karen Ibach

Karen began buying stocks as a hobby some years ago and invested in companies which interested her. When her children’s birthdays came around, she started giving them shares of stock as gifts. She wanted to include NET, too, as she enjoys watching musical programs on Great Performances at the Met, as well as Antiques Roadshow, Husker Volleyball and cooking shows. “I had the stock, so why not put it to good use,” she said about her financial support of NET.

The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.

Television • Radio Learning Services • Technology Services

Fill NET’s Stocking with Gifts of Stock If you’re fortunate enough to own stock that has increased in value, you might consider giving a portion to NET. In addition to supporting the television and radio programming that enrich your life, a gift made by Dec. 31, 2017 could help you reap significant tax savings. When you donate stock that you have owned for more than one year, you may be able to take an immediate tax deduction for the full market value and avoid capital gains taxes. The availability of the income tax deduction helps a charitable person become even more charitable. Gifts of stock and securities are an easy way to support NET. Securities include not only publicly traded stocks, but also mutual funds, Treasury bills and notes, corporate and municipal bonds, and stock in non-publicly held companies. No matter how large the donation, there is no need to obtain an appraisal. The value is simply based on what the stock or other security sold for on the exchange on the day of the donation.
