Message to Our Members We’re pleased to present three new local television documentaries this month – Eat Across Nebraska, Follow the Water and Nebraska Volleyball: Culture of A Champion. Each story provides a unique perspective on a topic we know you value. And, you had a hand in helping to create each program by providing consistent financial support to NET, Nebraska’s PBS and NPR Stations – thank you! As we approach a new school year, we’re proud to announce the launch of the newly updated NebraskaStudies.org website. The site was created by NET more than 15 years ago to address a shortage of Nebraska history content. It is the most comprehensive site available to students and teachers, as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about Nebraska. There are lesson plans for teachers, video clips, images, a timeline and curriculum that is based on educational standards for Nebraska. Speaking of students, NET is thrilled to work with the Nebraska Music Education Association to broadcast two special events for the very first time. Nebraska’s All-State Instrumental Concert Series features selections from the All-State Orchestra; All-State Band; and Master jazz band performances. We’ll also air the All-State Vocal Concert Series featuring performances from the All-State Chorus and Children’s Choir.

Our education team invites you to Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue on Aug. 11 & 12 to enjoy activities from the PBS KIDS series Ready Jet Go! and meet the character Jet Propulsion during the air show. Drop by the NET booth for a picture and put your science skills to work in our paper airplane challenge! Nebraska football and volleyball seasons are just around the corner! If you enjoy Big Red Wrap-Up and high school and collegiate sports on NET, consider becoming a member of our Sports Partners Club. Members and guests get free admission to the annual breakfast on Saturday, August 25, where new Big Red Wrap-Up co-host and former Husker Jay Moore will kick off the fall sports season! Lastly, NET News has created a new podcast that you can access anytime at netNebraska.org/podcasts. In On the Table, reporter Grant Gerlock explains how the Farm Bill influences more than just farming. Relevant content like On the Table is just one reason NET was named Outstanding News Operation for all of radio in the recent Associated Press Great Plains Broadcast Contest. It’s an exciting end to the summer here at NET – thanks to your generous support!

ON THE COVER

Saturday, Aug. 18 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. CT on NET

Betty White:

First Lady of Television Tuesday, Aug. 21 7 & 11 p.m. CT on NET

This definitive look at Betty White’s life and long career features exclusive behind-the-scenes access to her at work, entertaining at home and interacting with close friends – one of whom is a 900-pound grizzly bear! Betty White: First Lady of Television is packed with hilarious clips, including her role as the bawdy Sue Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, her opposite turn as the innocent Rose on Golden Girls, and her more recent role as and the worldly Elka on Hot in Cleveland. Plus, hear from friends and co-stars, including Ryan Reynolds, Valerie Bertinelli, Tina Fey, Carl Reiner, Carol Burnett, Pamela Adlon and many more.

Trace the journey of Nebraska’s Platte River in a story about where our water comes from, and why we should care.

Premiering Sunday, Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m. CT on NET Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 8:30 p.m. CT on NET It was a year when many counted them out, and one Nebraska Volleyball head coach John Cook labeled a year to “reinvent.” So, under his leadership and expertise, the team returned to the fundamentals of the game in 2017. It was a bumpy start, but the underdog mentality became motivation for Husker Nation to return to the national stage. At the NCAA Final Four in Kansas City, Penn State and Nebraska squared off in front of a record crowd, and the epic 5-set battle to advance to the National Championship was the ultimate test for two teams wanting to end their season with a title. NET Sports captures the drama of the 2017 season and the history of the rivalry between two powerhouse programs - Penn State and Nebraska. It’s an inspiring journey filled with courage, determination, camaraderie – and ultimately – a championship. 16

The first version of Nebraska Studies launched in 2001. Since then, teachers, students and lifelong learners have studied our history by viewing more than 10 million pages on the website.

NET’s newly-redesigned Nebraska Studies website welcomes students, teachers and history buffs of all ages with updated content and an improved search engine! From the state’s beginnings through the 21st century, the site connects you to Nebraska history. Follow the historical timeline; explore events that shaped our state; meet notable Nebraskans; and, if you are a teacher, find lesson plans based on Nebraska standards to use in the classroom. The website’s content is engaging and suitable for students representing a variety of age groups and abilities. Fourth-grade teacher Cherie Scholten from Picotte Elementary School in Omaha appreciates the in-depth lessons and technology resources. “The interactive map on the Nebraska Studies website and the video were a great way to introduce the content,” she said. Rich with archival photos, historic documents, personal letters, special video segments, informative maps, supplemental activities and much more – Nebraska Studies puts Nebraska history at your fingertips.

Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. CT on NET The North American Great Plains is an arid expanse of grasslands and rivers where the flow of water shows no respect for state boundaries. What do you learn if you try to follow that water? Photographer and author Michael Forsberg and filmmaker Pete Stegen set out on an adventure to do just that – follow a mythical drop of water 1,300 miles through three different states as they journeyed through the Platte River Watershed. NET’s documentary Follow the Water is a story about connections between the environment and people, and a river that has shaped the land itself. For almost two months, Forsberg and Stegen pushed themselves to the limit – biking, hiking and canoeing from the headwaters of the North Platte River in Wyoming to the mouth of the Platte where it flows into the Missouri. Friends joined them, guided them during their 55-day journey and even rescued them when they got into trouble. Sunrises and sunsets colored the skies as the travelers moved from the solitude of alpine wilderness, to the sprawling suburbs of Denver, to the peace of Nebraska’s prairie, past Kingsley Dam and finally on to the Platte River itself. Through iPhone interviews, photography from the Platte Basin Timelapse Project, journals and drawings – and with a backdrop of spectacular landscapes – Follow the Water tells a beautiful story about water as it flows from the mountains to the plains.

A Passion for History and NET Connie Bittfield of Kenesaw is enthusiastically spearheading a community effort to turn the old barber shop into a one-room museum. It all started a few years ago when they printed a book of early town photos. Now people of all ages are helping her collect items for the new museum. She has a passion for history that keeps her connected to her hometown as well as to Nebraska’s public television station.

Connie Bittfield

“I’ve been a member for years because your programs offer so much to learn. I watch all the history programs from Ken Burns,” Connie said. She also likes the British comedies as well as collegiate and high school Nebraska sports on NET. “I started watching more than 40 years ago on my little black and white TV,” she remembers. “And I want your great programs to continue! Many of us in town are fans of your quilting shows on NET Create because they are pertinent to our interests,” she added. Connie came up with a good way to ensure that NET will receive extra revenue from her estate when she decided to make NET a beneficiary of her certificate of deposit. Because she has made a planned gift, she is now a member of NET’s Friends of the Future Society and receives exclusive membership offers. The retired nurse educator worked at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings for 40 years and continues to make impact in Kenesaw and beyond.
